Continued from Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2008-2016

Please make any suggestions for new features, bugs, things you'd like to see changed or anything else. Also feel free to start a new thread in Site Discussion. If it's a little issue perhaps use this thread, if it's a big issue then perhaps start a new thread. Please see the wiki below as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback.

  • maybe this is a little pedantic but removal of the word "free"- something, in deals where you have to buy something to get the "free" item.

just like we define an item is not actually "free" when you have to pay for postage even though there is zero cost for the item. -there is a cost involved to acquire the item.

if you have to buy something then the added "free item" should be a "bonus item"

"buy a car and get free floor mats" —-> "buy a car and receive bonus floor mats"

using the word free (when there is a cost involved) is marketing.

and false sense of economy/bargainness - "I paid too much for the car but they threw in free floor mats so I feel I got a good deal"

ozbargainers look for the lowest cost (if not free). in ozbargainland using "free" should mean free.

I don't mind the description - Buy One Get One Free - at least that is plain to see by the first word "Buy" that there is a cost - but still would prefer "2 for the price of 1" or the acronym "BOGOF"

free=freebie i.e. no cost at all
bonus=a throw in extra when buying something.

    • but still would prefer "2 for the price of 1" or the acronym "BOGOF"

But if there's space, why use BOGOF instead of Buy 1 Get 1 Free?

And I'm sure that everyone is clued in to some extent that they know what is and isn't 'free', that it would only take your brain a second reading of the title, or a split second to think about it, to realise it is/isn't free?

Titles are normally amended to suit the situation (EG Free Product, just pay $X Shipping - Gets turned into Product - $X Shipped)

      • And I'm sure that everyone is clued in to some extent that they know what is and isn't 'free', that it would only take your brain a second reading of the title, or a split second to think about it, to realise it is/isn't free?

sure, most people here are aware of it. but I want a spill over effect in to the real world (wishful thinking I know).

my in-laws keep telling me what a good deal they got for something as they negotiated for a "free X" or "we found this great deal for Y + extra free Z"

You and I both know they paid too much and that they feel for the marketing/sales pitch.

usually titles are amended but this gem "Radiance Video Processor & Free Chromapure & Free Display 3 Calibrator US$4499 (A$5891)" was posted this morning and it is so….wrong.

        • But by definition, bonus = getting the item for free.

If you need (for example) - "Buy a whole chicken (for $12.95) get a free large chips (worth $3.95)" to be converted to "Whole Chicken and large chips - $12.95 (Save $3.95)" to be converted then sorry but imo it's just nitpicking, and frankly the mods have more on their plate than being quite that pedantic about every deal title.

Side note, but if you have an issue with a post/title, report it…

        • @Spackbace: yeah, I dig it that mods are busy.

hence my first line "maybe this is a little pedantic but …."

bonus does not mean free. you are paying for it. hence it is not free.

          this is where we differ

You will have to step out of your "car salesperson" thinking. possibly, you have an innate bias.

        • @altomic:

You will have to step out of your "car salesperson" thinking. you have an innate bias.

Sorry but that's not it at all. I've been doing this job for ~1/6th of my life. I clearly understood the distinction between the words, and how to understand those sort of statements, long before I joined the industry.

No need to go down that path.

    • Yeah, as a fellow pedant, I feel this is probably not warranted. Anyway, most OzBargainers are "professionals" who can easily see past the marketing crap anyway.

  • Is there any functional use for the Want/Have/Had options with products?
It would be great to get alerts and notifications if a deal is posted about a product that has been ticked as 'Want'

    • The Want/Have/Had function is just for personal use, to keep track of items you have bought or want to buy. You can go to edit > lists > products to view all the products you want / have / had for reference.

This also gives you easy access to product tags for items you want to buy to see if there are any new deals.

Yes it would be great to be alerted when a deal for a 'want' item is posted, however it's not possible unfortunately. The system only sends alerts when a deal is posted (upon submission) and currently most deals don't have product tags added when they are posted; powerusers or mods add them after posting.

Sorry if this may sound like a irrelevant suggestion, however is it possible to implement a system to search for deals and forums through member comments? As in, at the moment the only way to find deals posted on OzB is by searching the actual title of the deal or words in the description, however I find at times that I forget the exact title of a deal and can it can be very difficult to search for that specific deal through the vast number of similar posts. Many times I can remember a specific comment from a deal and believe it can help me find a specific post I was looking for by searching with that comment.

Thanks, I hope that all makes sense haha :)

    • Try google ;) google caches every post on here, deals and forums

      • +1

Yep that's what I use right now :P Thought it would more convenient if it was on OzB too? :)

    • The full text search actually searches through the comments as well, but matches get lower score. We do not currently have options to search only in the comments.

      • Fair enough scotty, Cheers :)

  • In the competitions section we get an "Entered" button. A "Not Entering" option should be available too if you want accurate stats on who entered what. Because I use the "Entered" button just to track which comps I've checked out, entered or not. I mean I don't really care but if more accurate stats are important :>

    • There is 'hide' button on the not entered page.

      • Yeah for competitions that you have seen but don't want to enter, click the 'hide' button. It will mark the competition as 'seen' instead of 'entered'. The hide button is below the competition information or on the not entered page as TheClipIt mentioned.

I'll find out if we could move it below 'Mark as entered' or similar to make it more obvious.

        • Didn't realise it was individual competition pages, only saw it on the not entered page. It looks too similar to the hide button on deals which hides from stores / posters not an individual deal.

        • Ok thanks

        • @TheClipIt:

Thanks TheClipIt and buttstuff for the feedback. Moocher will be making some changes regarding this in the near future.

Basically the current 'hide' link on competition posts should replicate deal posts where it gives the option to hide the poster or store as you've mentioned. The plan is that there will be something like a new button 'Mark as seen' underneath 'Mark as entered' on each competition post, so you can mark a competition as seen/viewed, which is what 'Hide' currently does. This is just more obvious and will mean we can implement the same 'hide' functions that deal posts have, so everything is consistent.

  • Not sure if this already exists, however I have noticed a significant more amount of duplicate deals being posted. I know we can report this as soon as it gets posted, however is it possible to have the posts "under review" (i.e. seperate page for the mods) for only the mods to see before it officially gets posted? As in if the OP has had to tick the "Not duplicate" box prior to posting, those posts should be unpublished untill confirmed by the mods so it doesn't clog up the deals page? Don't know how efficient this would be but still a suggestion? :)

Edit: On second thoughts this would probably be unreasonable for the eBay promotion deals considering they all use the same code..? Oh well, not sure?

    • That's a good idea, however if the 'duplicate queue' wasn't attended to for an hour or 2 then potentially users could be submitting the same deals that someone already posted hours ago (it just hadn't been approved in the queue). Frustrating/confusing for deal posters who are wasting their time. It would also be problematic at busy times (Woolworths 5pm Monday, eBay deals starting etc.) or when mods were in meetings or weekends/late nights when someone isn't always on instantly. Not something we'll consider because of these reasons, thanks for the suggestion regardless.

I don't think duplicates are on the rise as such looking at numbers for the past 5 months up to August, if we keep getting the same deal we can also ban the store from all deals temporarily. We also have a fairly new/recent feature where we block certain 'trouble' stores from L plate deal posters, such as ING Direct or Uber Eat where we see a lot of new users submitting referral spam/duplicates as they don't understand the rules (or are just here to post and will post it anyway unless we physically stop them). That has stopped quite a few referral spam / duplicate posts. Admins are also making duplicate detection mechanisms smarter as things come up.

      • Yea fair enough. And yeah on second thoughts the suggestion would perhaps cause more of a inconvenience to members I guess? Some good new features too as pointed out, keep up the good work! You guys deserve much greater credit for your work and effort to keep the site running :) Thanks

  • Had a thought, what about tags on competitions?

So, for example, you could tag it with 'car, money, holiday' and people could subscribe to those, and get notified when there's a competition for the thing they're interested in. You could also tag them with the product (playstation, xbox etc) and show it to people on product pages, and also in the newsletter if they're subscribed to that tag.

Obviously this would require a bit extra mod/PU work, ensuring the tags are right and not spammy.

Just something I thought about which may grab people who weren't looking at the competitions already, especially product subscribers

    • We don't actually notify people for tags, not even for deals. That's because we can't rely on deals being tagged properly. There are no product subscribers as such…not yet anyway.

      • Oh, well that's a shame

Could be something that has a 10min delay maybe, like social media posts, so it's tagged up and fixed in that time

        • We don't have the manpower to ensure that things are fixed up in 10 minutes unfortunately.

  • Noticed in the live feed that the user 'foundit' edited the wiki 49 minutes ago but was last online '4 hours 49 minutes ago'. How can someone be editing the wiki without being online? Pic

  • By adding a simple meta tag + 1 xml file, you can enable (chrome) users to search the ozbargain website directly from the url bar by typing ozbargain.com.au + [TAB]
    See: https://i.snag.gy/erJ345.jpg

This is super easy to implement:

Strange, it's listed here as being in the automated system

      Answered above

Just a quick suggestion; can we have a system where members while trying to post a deal can actually save it as 'draft' before officially posting it..? As in there are times where I'm filling out the details in a deal and decide it's perhaps not the best time to post it. Rather than losing all the details we have filled out, we could perhaps save it and come back to it later..? Thanks

    • +1

I do all my deals ahead and just save it in Notepad. Then I just have to copy and paste.

      • Nice, I've just started doing the same with Word, although I would prefer that saving posts as drafts would be more convenient? :) Majority of the time I am on my phone when posting a deal so it would be nice if I didn't have to save it somewhere else and then forget about it later haha

        • +1

Much more convenient but scotty might not be keen on implementing it.

Something cloud based like Onenote solves the mobile issue to a degree ;)

        • @Clear: True, will try doing that.. if he's reading, let's see what scotty has to say..? :)

    • +1

      Definitely agree with you there

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:store_representative#…

    Store rep performance based bans

With the number of members up voting everything that gets posted, I think the +1 average needs to be increased to properly reflect what a store should be aiming for. Even +5 will weed out the crap stores, but should have zero impact on most

Otherwise the members that up vote everything are allowing stupid deals/stores to just keep posting every week

    • People voting up "everything" actually triggered a flag on the account and reported to moderators, and we can further flag the account to prevent more voting.

If you suspect some crappy store gets consistently voted up so they can post deals every week, please report those so we can investigate.

  • Not sure if we already have this, but is there a chance of having a FAQ page for popular products (e.g Phones, Power Banks, Gaming Consoles/Devices etc.) so we can link it in the description for members to have direct access to, rather than having to answer the same questions asked about the product over and over again? Thanks :)

Edit: This could be like a forum post with the most asked or occurring questions answered..?

    • You can certainly make a wiki page. Do you have an example and how it can be applied?

      • Thanks for the response. The main concern is really with the specifications of a product being posted, considering most of the questions asked are in regards to that, this is either due to the description of a post not being informative enough or the deal posted has too many products listed for every one of them to have a proper description.

So I was wondering if for popular products or even niche products, we can have a FAQ page for members to have a direct link to view, so either we can use that instead if we have any questions, or OP's can refer to the FAQ page to perhaps enhance the content of their post description to allow for greater clarity for the community?

It basically exists to not go through the trouble of answering the same questions being asked by members which can easily be accessed on the Wiki Page. So all a member has to do is link that specific page on their post rather than clogging up the description by trying to being informative for every aspect of a product. Hope that makes sense? Thanks :)

        • +1

we definitely could do with an eBay faq e.g.

Can I stack the main coupon with another code?
Can I use my Groupon $85 for $100 value with the other code?
Can you search for me some deals on phone x or item y?
How come the discount doesnt seem to be applied on my payment?
Will someone give me their "unwanted" $50 or $20 Paypal voucher (the one with no minimum spend)
Can I sell imaginary item Z and make a killing like my hero Tom?

While the terms for subsequent sales may differ, having a template that the Dealposter can tick & flick and change as required may be useful.

        • @payton: Might put something together like the shop small wiki page tomorrow.

        • Right, I see what you are saying. Yes, a wiki page that lists FAQ is a great idea. Feel free to create one, then report a deal that needs it and we will link to it (or copy and paste it into the deal).

We actually have this suggestion in our ticket system from 4 years ago. :) It would be an embedded wiki page that the community can edit. Slickdeals has something similar but it's on a per deal basis.

        • @neil: Thanks neil, I will try to come up with one for my next deal and will see if it serves it purpose. Cheers :)

        • Yup. Likewise a long time ago I started a Wish (e)Gift Card FAQ because every time there's a deal there's inevitably a flood of repeated questions about what can/can't be purchased with them:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/purchasing_gift_cards_usin…

Would be good if it were a standard link applied to every deal involving Wish Gift Cards…

        • @TheClipIt:
          Good on ya! :D

        • @TheClipIt: Awesome work! I'm also creating a draft on Word for a few products before publishing it :)

        • +1

@stuhtb: Updated the FAQ, most questions have similar answers :)

        • @TheClipIt: Haha good :) You should also add the If anyone has a spare $25 GG voucher, please PM me one too, it will still pop up every now and then even though it's over ;)

        • +1

@stuhtb: Think that page should be for eBay, maybe another page for TGG?

        • @TheClipIt: Yeah that would be nice too considering this deal is running :)

        • @stuhtb: Create one yourself :)

        • +1

@TheClipIt: Nice, will start it once back at the office ;)

  • Not sure if already suggested.

An auto "bump" feature for deals posted prior to their start date.

E.g. a deal is posted today for something but the start date is next Tuesday. We see it as a deal as normal but then at 12:01am on Tuesday it "jumps" to the top of the deals as it is now "active".

That way we don't have to remember/bookmark, etc these deals. Also this would be beneficial for members who haven't logged on for a few days and may have missed the inactive/pre-deal post.

Maybe a highlighted word at the start of he title saying "BUMPED" or "ACTIVE" or similar, so people don't report as a dupe mistakenly(?)

    • That does happen already for deals, they'll get promoted to the top of the front page for a set period of time :)

      • This if if it is a popular deal (and we see it). But there is Deals Starting Soon in the Deals menu.

        • Oh ok cool :)

        • @Spackbace: deal starting soon. This is more of "the deal has started" thing. Anyway, just food for thought.

  • At the moment we have a little window that shows the top five comments or so.
Can I suggest having an option to re-arrange the comments section so the most voted comment threads shows up first, instead of chronological order.
Reason for asking is that the comments in popular deals always run into the hundreds and its bit hard to sort out.
It probably will save some members from frustration as well. They see the useful comments first rather the same basic questions popping over and over : "can I combine two ebay codes? any bargains on iphone7?"

    • +1

Reddit style comment filtering has been suggested before, but declined. You can click the 'Top comments' button at the bottom of threads for the top 5 comments (only shows on threads with multiple pages).

      • would be nice if we can expand that top 5 little box into a full sized window with "top 100" :)
The top 5 are just one-line links, meaning most times it needs to be expanded to read it properly.

  • Most of the time, the random weekly discussion thread is devoid of activity. Perhaps change it to a random question asked every Wednesday and Saturday?
    e.g
Ozbargainers, what's your favourite TV show?
Ozbargainers, where do you buy your sushi from?
Ozbargainers, show us your PC build?
Ozbargainers, how do you get to work?
Ozbargainers, how do you spend your free time?
Ozbargainers, what deal do you regret buying?

At least that'll stimulate some discussion.

    • +1

You're more than welcome to ask the question.

      • I did once. 19 replies is alright. But I'm afraid I'm not very good at coming up with questions.

    • Its an interesting suggestion. The threads are autogenerated so wondering how we can ask random questions. Reminds me of madlibs growing up.

      • Maybe mods can come up with a list of questions, and every week when random discussion threads get created, a random question is picked…

        • I thought you are mod as well….

        • +2

          @pyramid: no, he's an Administrator

        • Would it be possible to setup a surveymonkey questionnaire? Chuck it in the forums section as an announcement and have people post questions. Two separate boxes, one for ozbargain username and one for a list of questions. The mods could also pick the best questions, that way you don't need to leave all the creativity to the mods. There should a heap of questions after a month or so (enough to last for a while).

If someone's question has been chosen for discussion, perhaps they could be rewarded with a bronze badge? Or even a silver badge after being selected 5 times for discussion? (just a thought)

      • Questions could be randomly selected from a pool of questions provided by ozbargainers. click me

Perhaps the thread could be created at 18:00 on Wednesday and 6:00 on Saturday? That's when most people get home from school/work and when some people wake up to enjoy their weekend.

Was wondering if we can have some sort of page with specific advice on buying different kinds of phones/tech such as tech review websites like Android Authority. There is perhaps a ridiculous amount forum posts asking for advice on which phone they should buy and its getting very repetitive.. we might as well have a page dedicated for advice on different categories of phones e.g Budget, High end etc. to perhaps help out a majority number of people in the community without having thousands of forum posts asking the same thing… Does it sound alright?

    • Your more then welcome to create a wiki page yourself :)
Product pages have reviews and some info which you could link to in a page.

      • +1

Will try to create one, however there is a good chance right after I make it there will be another Need Suggestion on New Phone post cause people can't be bothered reading and need to be spoon fed everytime… there needs to be a way to make it more accessible?

        • Every time someone makes a forum just post a comment to the wiki page? Maybe the mods could add a link to it from here?

If you go ahead and make a forum with little info on I'm sure others could contribute to it too.

    • We would certainly appreciate you creating a wiki page and if anyone ever asks a question in the forum for something that the wiki covers you can link them there, they might also have more questions about that information and similar. We could also put it in the mobile forum header and that will hopefully save some users from creating a new thread in the first place, of course the wiki will need maintaining which is often the problem, especially with something that changes so rapidly like mobile phones.

If you have any other wikis that are directly related to any of the other existing forum categories (automotive, computing) that you are maintaining then we can look at adding those into the header of each category. Eg mobile where it currently has the message about selling and commenting guidelines.

It's not something as simple as maybe a user saying, are there any bargain websites outside of Australia? Where the wiki covers it completely and the query is resolved, mobile phones can rely on the users specific needs and information can often change so can't really be duplicated to the wiki like a query about bargain sites overseas could be.

Appreciate all your hard work with the wiki's. Hopefully putting it in the header will fix the accessibility issue you mentioned (as users are usually going straight to the forum and not the wiki first).

      • Thanks for the reply! I may start to create a draft of the Wiki for Mobile Phones. It will mainly serve the purpose of advice and comparisons with a list of phones which can be related to the Price, Size, Brand etc. people are frequently after with the help of major tech review websites.

I understand how this needs to be monitored and updated frequently and I am more than happy to do it, and maybe some other members can join in and contribute their findings too so it's much more collaborative and represents a wider range of aspects which can be answered. Will keep you updated once started, thanks :)
