Coupon Intel-Arse, what are you trying to say Shopping Express?

  • +10

Going to wait for an EVOARSE

    • would be sweet

    • That would be arsing for trouble…

  • +3

how does it compare to Samsung EVO,

please, no, oh i only web browse and office:)

    • +1

i only web browse and office:)

      Probably zero difference for you

      • When would it actually make a difference then?

      • edit: replied to wrong person

    • +3

Agreed with bentan. Difference is pretty much only seen in benchmarks and comparative epeen.

Top tier SSDs do flex their muscles in a few situations: servers, high bitrate video editing, transferring huge files (like tens of GB at a time).

Otherwise for "average" use you might see a 1s difference in startup, 0.5s difference when opening a word document but absolutely no difference when it comes to browsing, facebooking and the like.

      • yes. all those 1s and 0.5s add up.

try copying a 1gb file etc, i guess it comes down to people and accepting, oh this is enough and people who want maximum speed they can get and 20$ price difference is not the best decision to just settle for second best

i mean, where do you draw the line? do you want i7 3770 or a i7 4790k and how do you justify the difference for use intended. Of course anyone would chose i7 4790k over the other one if the price was the same? right?

        • +2

All those 1s and 0.5s add up, but how many have you wasted by reading and typing all these replies on OzB?

Like I said - for the average user, epeen is the only real benefit of an 850 over the 535.

535 (in this case of a sale) nets you another $20 in your pocket which surely is worth more than the x minutes/year you'd save with the 850

        • +2

@jzdhgkd: waiting data being copied and checking ozb is different, one is boring one is full of fun and happiness!

        • -1

          @jzdhgkd:

well. you might as well make a significant saving and use a core 2 duo processor, imagine the saving there lol

        • @jzdhgkd:

          goes both ways mate,
how much time youve wasted here to save 20$ lol

i can see a big difference between different SSDs i have, so thats my experience and synthetic benchmarks reflect this.
you might as well got a normal hard disk and save even more $$$

        • @eisniwre: You know you can do both at once, right?

        • -1

A 1GB file? On one it will take 2.5s and on the other it will take 5s. To the average user it won't matter. You might notice a difference, and that difference might be important to you, but the average user won't.

        • -1

          @macrocephalic:

mate. if this was true, we'd all be using core 2 duos

          DUH

        • @millusions: Plenty of people still do their main computing on systems comparable to core2duo's. If you go to JB or HN and buy a $500 PC or laptop with a 'pentium' processor in it then you're probably getting something comparable to a core2duo.

Look at the stagnation in the sales of PC's - this is because they've reached a point where most people don't feel the need to upgrade to something better all the time.

  • Can this be used to upgrade Lenovo 100S Laptop storage? - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/227856

    • No

    • No.
The Lenovo has the 32 GB eMMC
      On sale is a 2.5" 7mm SSD

    I would have been all over this if it were a M.2 drive;

2 days is about the average wait time for a good SSD deal to pop-up on ozBargain xD

  • +7
    • +1

Appreciate that link mate, good read and made me realise it's worth the wait.

    • -2

if only more of the ignorant people here read that link lol

    • The EVO's sell fast enough the no one needs to do deals on them. Likely there is heaps of spare Intel stock sitting around

  • have to resist

    • resistance is futile

  • Tempting but reviews suggest that SSD is Intel only in name and although in comes with a 5 year warranty so does the Samsung EVO 850.

    • +1

850 also 30$ more but 850 all the way. Have one in my work laptop and its just great

  • Can I plug this in a 2008 manufactured Toshiba Satellite A300? If yes, would it be a wise move in terms of the gain?

    • +1

yes and yes. though you can only max the ram to 3gig as its 32bit

    • though make sure you have the actual HDD connections in the 2nd hdd compartment.

  • Damn i just bought it… can i cancel my order and get refund aspa? I want to change ssds. after looking up looks bad.

    • +7

Intel and Samsung make the most reliable SSD's

I wouldnt worry to much about performance on these drives as they are both blown away by the 850 Pro :)
reliability and lifespan are the most important aspect of an SSD . Performance comes second… ALL SSD's are so far ahead of mechanical hard drives that you always see a massive improvement.
In real world use you could never tell the difference between an 850 Evo and Intel 535

      • +3

I suggest people backup important files on other drives. SSDs are quite different to traditional hard drives. I had a Samsung SSD which died within 2 years (very little use, less than 2.5TB total writes on a 240GB SSD).

When an SSD dies, it often goes completely dead. You will not able to recover any data from it.

Best not to just rely on the brand. Each model is different.

    • Plus 109$ including priority ship is pretty good value for money regardless

  • MUST RESIST…

    • They'll be double the capacity in a few months.

  • No deals for the 480GB?

    • -1

      can you see any?

      • +3

Nope, 'tis why I asked. Would be nice to have an arse voucher for the 480 ;)

  • Can't believe they are selling these drives with their crappy Sandforce controllers which are about 5 years old technology.

  • question for NUC. i can see most have 2 ports, one hdmi one vga.
if i plug in 2 exactly the same monitors (relatively new monitor, FHD resolution), will i get the same quality of display on both? (im concern as they both pluged into different ports).

will the cheapest on the list: D34010WYKH (i3) is better than NUC5PPYH (N3700 Quad core)?

    • +2

Don't use VGA, not if you can help it. While it is capable of fairly high resolutions and frame rates, it's an analog signal. You're not likely to get a pixel-perfect image with today's LCD monitors (hence why you'd use HDMI). In your use case one signal will be Digital and one Analogue, this is a noticeable difference.

      • thanks. so is it possible to use 2 monitors with that NUC? maybe one hdmi out from NUC then buy splitters 1 to 2 cable and go into dvi or hdmi on each monitors?

        • +2

Well only if you want a mirrored image use splitters, otherwise if you want dual displays i.e. different content on each monitor use the D34010WYKH, as it has both DisplayPort and HDMI - simply use a MiniDP to HDMI Adapter and you are set.

        • @Haxxa: I want to extend my view for example put two different excel sheets on each monitor to compare data. Or one excel one browser. I saw in some office computer they use splitter but able to extend?

        • +1

@eisniwre: HDMI Splitters can only Mirror (this is not what you want). I have A NUC I use to to extend my display - what you want for this is the D34010WYKH Model with a miniDP to HDMI Adapter (found on ebay for few dollars). This allows you to say have one monitor viewing an Excel Sheet and the other Google Chrome.

        • +1

@Haxxa: thank you. wont buy nuc with vga

      • +1

Agreed. I have a long (3m) VGA cable that I use to plug my work laptop in at home and the picture is terrible. There's quite a bit of ghosting and distortion. It's good enough for a second monitor when working at home, but it's pretty bad. Of course, you get a much better signal if you use an appropriate length, good quality cable - but still not as good as digital.

  • No deals for compatible RAM?

  • Hi Tightarse, Any more deals on the MicroSD, I missed yesterdays 8gb one ;-[

lucky existing boot disk was an mSATA.

    Thanks again tightarse

  • +1

I dont know where you keep pulling these deals from TA, but you got me again. Been looking for a simple NUC for ages, come on and go looking, cant find any and low and behold, i should have chekced OzB first…

    Thanks :D

edit: Damn it TA, i had to get the SSD as well. Thanks for spending my money :P

  • Whats the difference between a I5 and I3 NUC when wanting to run KODI? Will this SSD fit in the NUCs available?

    • +1

ive upgraded my plex box from i3 3.1GHz to i7 3.4GHz,
its noticable, for example when starting to stream a movie it's faster to start also seek during a movie is a lot faster.

the ssd should be able to replace any SATA drive - SATA interface

    • +1

If your primary goal is to run a media centre with kodi dont bother with these…overkill and expensive. See my post below.

      • what if you need it to replace an old desktop. primary use is for excel, word, browsing (many tabs), and maybe light touch up photos.

  • +1

grabbed a N3050 NUC recently for $194 and 8GB ram for $58 and its running OpenELEC/Kodi perfectly…dont need to spend big $$$ on these NUCs for a media centre.

p.s. also dont need a HDD , just run off a spare USB or SD card.

    • Where would I be able to pick up the setup from? This is exactly what Im looking for. Thanks for your response and help.

      • +2

MSY normal pricing not even on special.

If you want to keep costs down just install OpenELEC 6.0 (which is Kodi 15.2) from SD card to a USB (or vice versa) that you already have saving buying an SSD…Im controlling it with my android tablet via the official app Kore (works surprisingly well, can even sleep and wake the device). I have also ordered a MCE IR remote from ebay for $10 to see how that goes.

This setup is super snappy in the menus and plays everything flawlessly from what Ive seen so far.

If you are never planning to run windows 4GB ram will be fine but I got 8GB just in case I decide to later run windows.

Windows and windows application would benefit from a more expensive NUC (I3/I5/I7) but you dont need to go that way if you just want a great network/local media player.

        http://nucblog.net/2015/07/braswell-nuc-review-nuc5cpyh-htpc…

Possibly the most important thing is that it is also wife friendly :)

        • Thanks for the information. Ill look into it. I did the same this with the Raspberry PI but it just wasnt snappy enough. Lagged alot and got sick of the crappy remote after a while.

        • @avra06:

Yeah definitely snappy…more so than the android media player I was using to run kodi before this.

        • Cheaper to get an xbox one and install media player app.. It plays everything all video files.

        • @vid_ghost:

          Lol …not even comparable.

  • Does the Intel SSD come complete with free cloning software like the Samsungs?

  • +1

Be careful dealing with these guys. I bought a Samsung monitor which was DOA. Called them and submitted a ticket but hasn't got any response in almost 2 weeks. I have already lodged a PayPal claim to get my money back.

    • as I know paypal don't care faulty product, not even DOA.
