Opal Card $60 Recharge for $24 @ Woolworths [Figtree, NSW]

1020

Hi guys, went to my local store in figtree and went to buy an Opal card. I was informed by the lady that although it is not being advertised that they are coming up with massive discounts in the Woolworths system. $24 will get you a $60 recharge or $48 will get you $120. Appears to be a figtree only deal. Receipt attached for all the doubters.

  • Dang, now wondering if driving down to figtree is worth my time.

    • +15

Why don't you catch a train?

  • Now, we're talking !

  • She did say it was a woolworths fault so maybe ask ur local woolworths to see how much the $60 recharge comes up as?

    • +1

Do you know what she meant by "Woolworths fault"? Could it be just an error on their part and not a promotional thing?

      • She was just a front counter lady. Said they rang head office and they did not know of any promotion but they were scanning through as being on sale

        • Noticed your receipts are from Friday 15/01/2016. If this is a pricing error like it seems like it is, there's a possibility Woolies may have fixed the error already.

Might be an idea to keep that in mind if anyone decides to give it a go.

          @GreenGuava:
Better to ring before travelling but i spoke with them again today. They are opal card limit today but have confirmed it will be the same price tomorrow at 8am

        • @chocolate dream:

So how much have you actually purchased?

Your receipt is from 2 days ago…

        • @GreenGuava: price match at officeworks?

  • I hope the credit has no expiry?

    It's a 60% off clearance deal.

    • +14

      They're clearing out Opal trains.

      • +2

        BOGOF trains?

  • +24

Be careful. Transport department might appoint an administrator next week…

    • +2

Or Figtree might have new manager. Or Woolies might have a new IT manager.

    • +6

We could be invaded by Victoria, Queensland or *gasp* South Australia… :O

  • +2

Receipt is already attached. Looks like figtree have gone over their limit as everyone has been buying them but confirmed they will be selling them at the discounted price again from 8am tomorrow

    • -1

You also get an Opal receipt which shows the amount of recharge and the new balance. Post that.

      • +1

Not sure why you're being negged, it's a very valid point.

        • I'm now inclined to believe it's a Woolies error and unreproducible elsewhere.

        • @greenpossum: possible, was not sure if it was a single store special or just figtree

  • No expiry on transport for nsw receipt

  • +2

    Uploaded opal receipts

    • +2

Where does it say you paid only $24?

      • Do you know how i can post 2 photos, it will only let me have one on the mobile

  • Is this all woolworths? tempted to go for a 30 minute drive now and topup a few hundred…

    • I've read opal cards have a max limit of $250. Best to ring the front counter of you woolworths and see if the $60 recharge scans up as discounted

    • +1

Why did easternculture get so many negs for that one?

      • +2

Probably people in that area don't want others "stealing" their bargain?

      • +3

Why did treeman get so many negs for that one?

      • +3

because alot of ozbargainers are selfish and dont respect how much ec has contributed here

    • Will do the same, anyone?

      • I might just go for a drive to Wollongong and get a a few hundred worth of opal cards

  • Wollongong area, too far for Sydney ppl to get it!

    • +1

Ring ur woolworths and see what it scans as. Just takes one phone call

      • This most likely be a promotion offer for new spot to get ppl to topup there, not for an already known spot.

  • So how do we take advantage of this exactly? Do we request a $60 and it rings up as charging $24? Happy to try it at my local shortly.

  • +3

    Other Woolies, anyone ?

  • Needed to top-up anyway OP, thanks for the reminder!

  • Was the $60 starter pack still $60 though?

  • +17

Tried Woolworths Eastgardens (2036), did not work.

      • +1

Thanks save my hassle of trying there

        • yes, lucky i read this, I was just about to leave…

      • +10

There is a spider 🕷 in the back of your receipt

        • +3

Confirmed. No reply, died of spider bite.

  • Hey OP, do you have a receipt for the top up of $120 for $48 ?

    • OP did two separate top ups of $60 at $24 each, making that a total of $120 for $48. It wasn't done as a single transaction.

  • Receipt date is 15/1/2016 so it might have already been fixed

    • Please read above. Confirmed with store that it will be the same price tomorrow

      • it is not in their hands. If it gets fixed then they can't do anything.

        • +1

I can obviously not guarantee anything but if anyone is local it is worth looking at

  • +7

If this applies to all Sydney Woolworth, it will be a front runner for the award of deal of 2016. Most other deals are discretionnary spending, this is one of few mandatory spending…..

    • +1

Just waited on hold for ages to speak to the service desk at my local Woolies. After finally getting through, she refused to check the price without me being there in-person. ¬_¬

  • -4

where does it say $24 in the receipt?

  • +6

Tried on woolies hillsdale & eastgarden. Not valid

  • +1

Went to local store @ Eastlakes, NSW

Me:"May I know how much to top up $60 Opal?"
The lady:"You will be charged for whatever amount that you top up."
Me:"Can you please check on the system, I want to know the amount before topping up."
The lady insisted she need it will be the same and wouldn't want to check. The thing is I wouldn't want to pay $60 as I rarely use Opal, so ended up to no avail.

    • +4

Should've asked for a new card with $60 on it and refused to complete the transaction if the price wasn't discounted.

      • I'm not sure if they have the barcode to check as not many people would topup $60. They wouldn't just have the barcodes lying around as it is usually printed through the epay terminal.

From what I've seen at my local store, basically the pattern is that your card is topped up immediately before you pay using EFT. That is, the a small piece of paper with the barcode comes out of the epay terminal, then they press a few extra buttons to print the rest of the receipt. I'm sure there is a cancel button, or possibly they don't know how to cancel it… Or maybe there isn't a cancel button. x_X

In which case someone could just topup and run away with their opal card without paying. lol. There would have to be some fail-safe, i.e. possibility of reversals.

        • Process is that the staff would place the opal card on the terminal, select the amount and barcode is printed and scanned.. In between the process of finalising payment, on the terminal it mentions "confirm payment?"… So once payment has been taken, then the staff would press confirm and the amount would go straight to the card while also printing another separate receipt containing balance on opal..

    • If you barely use Opal why would you even bother with this deal? I mean, you aren't going to use that $60 in the next 9 years?

      • Well I usually just top up $10-20 and I can use it for a long time (still using Travelten atm except Sunday)
So $24 is fine but $60 at once is too much for me.

  • +2

Thats about what Sydney trains are worth

    • +2

Hey today is Sunday, take advantage getting down there, only cost you $2.50

  • +10

Called and asked all stores in the Hills District in NSW (Kellyville, Dural, Rouse Hill etc) and none of them said it was on there and knew nothing of it happening anywhere else.

  • looks like system error not promo. best you get is 5% off if you pay those gift cards, which is still not bad.

  • Called up local woolies and they don't even do opal?

  • +1

Oh well was worth a shot at the other stores. Sorry but must be figtree only

  • Damn down in woolongong

  • OP did you buy an Opal card with $60 or did you top-up an existing Opal card with $60?

    • +2

Both, so i got a $60 opal card and a $60 top up for $48

  • +1

That's massive discount for OPAL in history! It is better than get bank interest.

  • Is this definitely finished for today at Figtree OP? I will actually be in the area this arvo.

    • +1

Yes sorry apparently because it has been so popular they have gone over their daily sales limit

  • I don't follow, is this a deal or just the OP got lucky? I wouldn't mind topping up opal on the cheap as the credit is valid for 7yrs IIRC

    • At figtree only at the moment

    • the credit is valid for 7yrs IIRC

      *9 years

  • +4

So 38 upvotes for a deal that only the OP has gotten? Haha.

  • +2

Just went in and can confirm with OP, over daily limit. It's a glitch so only at figtree but they expect the price will continue tomorrow if mgmt don't step in

  • +4

Figtree only. Checked with sydney townhall and central. No discount.

  • +5

Just tried at Woolworths Macquarie (Sydney). Didn't get the $24 for $60 but I got $5 off my recharge with my everyday rewards card (I think it's spend over $50 to get $5 off)
