Think you could buy a $500 laptop and larger IPS monitor for less $$$

    • +2

I also do not get these all in 1 PCs. They are basically a non movable laptop, or a non-up-gradable PC. They loose the best of both worlds I believe.

A combo like you say is still portable (just remove the laptop) while having a big monitor too. Just probably you cannot get a laptop with those specs and a decent monitor at that price.

      • -3

They are also usually rubbish quality components in comparison to a normal desktop PC. Far from the "latest" stuff (4th gen, we are up to 6th gen!).

        • -1

To the person who negged me: how many AIOs do you repair every year? They are junk in comparison to the equivalent desktop. This is based off 17 years experience repairing computers every day. They are more unreliable and harder to get parts for than most laptops.

it can make a difference in business environment where space and neatness is of value. example. medical clinics, hotels, offices, receptions, etc, etc

we have thousands of dells aio optiplex deployed in many places. Most run 24/7/365 (shuts down 1am, wakes up 6am). We have countless machines thats been tagging along since 2012 and still actively used up to this day.

who said they are rubbish quality…?

        • -3

I don't know any medical centres or offices that use them and I service a very wide selection of industries in my role. They are commonly bought by the ill-informed mum and dad at home who get conned by Harvey Norman type staff as the "best" solution for an upgrade to their home computer.

Seriously, spend your money elsewhere - just because it seems "cheap" doesn't mean it is a bargain!

        • @johnleckie70:

i wouldn't deploy these ASUS in any settings. However DELL AIO OPTIPLEX is in a league of their own!

fyi. I mostly deal in a government & corporate settings. Last year alone we deployed over 1500 optiplex 9030, and previous year i'd say 3000+ 9020s aios. As part of our arsenal of solutions we've been deploying Optiplex since 9010 series. These are diehard low maintenance machines designed really NOT for high compute requirements. They have their own place. Thats not to say we don't deploy PC's.. cos we do double than the AIO we deploy. Just depends on the requirement.

Well that's surprising you haven't seen them in Medical practices or anywhere else.. In melb alone a colleague of mine have deployed them in many "modern" clinics both medical and dentists using optiplex aios & hp pro 600's and 800's. These settings do not need high compute requirements (ie Internet/emails, Office, HCN MD & PRAC, BP, OASIS,, Centaur, Imaging apps, Paperless apps, etc etc, etc). Every single practice owners are full of praise with them. They are just so easy & convenient to deploy, with less cables & less space wastage. And in terms of IT maintenance, failure rate is a rare occurrence (especially when you couple it with SSD's).

BTW I am talking about business grade AIO's not found in your average joe HN JB Dick(less) who sell their consumer grade machines. Biggest downside actually with biz aio's are they are expensive.

PS: @johnleckie70 only thing I will agree with you .. Consumer grade ALL in Ones I wouldn't buy for myself! Including this ASUS one here.

But in the business realm biz grade AIO have their own solid place!

          @j03:

Dell AIO are business grade but that isn't what this thread is about, it is about the Asus above as listed as a "bargain" (the business grade AIOs also cost a lot more than a normal desktop).

I deal with medical centres, dentists, physios and a big mixture of small-medium business (eg, various trades, retail, etc) and have for 17 years. None of them run AIOs, no need for them. There are better choices. A screen that fits perfectly in the space required is much neater and more flexible than any AIO. The "box" just neatly goes elsewhere and again is flexible where it goes. One user might need a 27 inch screen while another is limited by space and has a 19 inch. Both can run the same hardware while using the best size screen for the space and/or their requirements.

But, we'll have to agree to disagree about the whole thing - all IT people do things differently, especially the ones who do work in government and corporate environments.

      • All-in-Ones are appealing to the type of buyer who would typically buy a laptop and then leave it in one place plugged in all the time. It's much more neat and compact than a traditional desktop, they have a much larger screens and better speakers than any laptop, and they're actually quite easy to move around from place to place around the home since there's usually only one cable.

The CPU and GPU are soldered in, but you can still upgrade the RAM and HDD if you desire.

They're not suited to gamers or those who want the latest gear, but they're generally pretty solid performers and while they're not for me personally, I can totally see the appeal.

        • Not all AIO cpu's are soldered on ;) but this particular unit. yes.

Simply Apple created this all-in-one market and everyone wants to follow suit

    • A laptop with a proper quad-core processor and discrete 740M graphics for $500? Where can I find such a thing?

  • +1

    Some design flaws to consider.

On advertised pictures it looks neat, business like looking and you'd think the plastic bezel around it is flushed with the screen just like Laptops or other AIO PC's. But NO! The bezel actually sticks out approx 1/4+ of an inch from the screen and there is that space for all sorts of gunk to fall into and accumulate.

I upgraded one of these with an SSD for my mate. In person the design just looks annoyingly ODD.

    Wow, good price!

that's $400ish for the processor, 100+ for the graphics card, 200+ for the touch monitor buying seperatley, equivalent-ish specs,

Of course, it's actually a 'laptop' but, compared to the specs of others, it's really good

I'd be tempted if my hard rubbish I7-920 dell didn't benchmark so well compared to newer processors, i'd be spending $700+ to get 'double' the performance of a 7 year old computer….I'll wait a while longer

  • I have an iMac in the dining room, that way I can keep across what is happening in the household…I couldn't do this from my study where I have a pc and don't like the screen size of my notebook. The dining room isn't suited for a tower or desktop and screen setup. These all in one's suit a purpose but not everybody,s purpose. When the iMac dies an all in one windows pc is a candidate. Not tower desktop or notebook
