LG Ultrawide 29" 29UM57 for $359 @ MSY

130

Incredible price on the LG Ultrawide 29UM57 (non-freesync version) on MSY's Deal of the Day.
Great for work/productivity and also good for immersive gaming.
For example: heres a video of Star Wars Battlefront being played on a LG 29" Ultrawide

  • Looks like there is no height adjustment on this model?

This is an excellent monitor for gaming. I play CS:GO with this and I actually get extremely good FOV in-game so I can sometimes see people in peripherals where others can't with a 16:9 screen. I have tested this by watching other people and they claim they were unable to see enemies which I could clearly see on my screen.

At the same time though, the menus are buggy with this ratio in CS:GO. be warned

    • This should be 'excellent monitor for FOV'. Not only is support for the larger 21:9 monitor patchy at best, the max refresh rate (60hz), pixel density, 5ms delay and lack of customisation make it a below average monitor for gaming, especially when you consider the burden of graphics detail.
While i would recommend this if you are looking for a screen with a large FOV (it was extremely useful in BF4), it doesn't compare to gaming panels at the same price range.

  • Normal price?

    • $399

  • would this ultrawide monitor go well on my PS4?

    • No it won't because PS4 doesn't have capacities to scale for some odd reason. I have similar screen and it just stretches everything. I don't mind…

    • PS4 only outputs in 16:9
it will probably work but you'll get the black bars instead of fullscreen

  • Thoughts please - the LG or this 27" Benq for $90 less? Will use it for some gaming, some word processing/internet browsing and a lot of movies/TV. Thanks in advance

    • I have smaller Lg ultra wide and it produces color great. Benq… I don't know but somehow I don't see it would be better. Once again you buy a monitor and matbe use for next 2-3 years so let choose the good built quality one

This a milion times over. Game support may be a little bit spotty (CSGO's menus are strange, GUIs are stretched occasionally, and Payday 2's menus are forced to have black bars at the edges). Movies are full screen without black bars - just like a movie theater. You can run apps side-by-side and multitask like a beast. The colour looks awesome due to the IPS panel.

I own the 25" version of this monitor.

I'll try to keep this objective as possible.
Main things you need to consider:

      BenQ EW2750ZL
      Panel type: AMVA 8bit
      Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (16:9) = 2 megapixels
      Tilt: -5~20
      VESA: no

      LG 29UM57
      Panel type: AH-IPS 6bit +FRC (aka dithering)
      Resolution: 2560 x 1080 (21:9) = 2.8 megapixels (more screen real estate is a plus)
      Tilt: no
VESA: yes (makes up for the absent stand functions)

I have 2 Dell IPS monitors. One from 2010, and the other from 2014.
Guess which one produces distinctly better colour?
Side by side, to the naked eye there is no debate that the 2010 model reproduces NOTICEABLY better colour.
      Why?
The 2010 model is 8bit, and the 2014 model is 6bit +FRC (aka fake 8bit).

Is this a huge deal for you? Most likely not, considering the things you will be using this monitor for:
Gaming, some word processing/internet browsing and a lot of movies/TV.

I would personally go with the LG and if the stand annoys me I'd buy one of these for 50 bucks: http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id…

      • Thanks heaps for your very comprehensive explanation!

i have the smaller version, it's quite a nice screen for working.
the stand is rubbish and is not adjustable.
    it's easy to dust

  • Anyone who owns this screen; are you able to squeeze out or overclock 75hz from it (like the higher model 67 can)?

    • I don't own this screen, but here someone seemed to get theirs to 75, no higher.

  • Will you trade off 2x 24" with one of these?

    • 34" Ultrawide (next size up) might be more suitable to replace dual 24s

      • Cheers!
