Turn on text to speech then…

      • Though its locked, does it work with Boost Sim/Network?

  • So this comes with a Telstra prepaid sim? If so what does that include?

    • -2

$10 Standard Credit. 5GB Bonus Data of activated before the 25th Jan.

      • Thanks

        • And activated on the Freedom Plus offer to get the bonus 5GB.

      • @sween64 No it comes with a $30 Starter Kit. Check the Telstra website.

        • And SIMs included with hand sets. Only excludes $2 SIMs. Trust me.

        • @sween64: No I'm saying the iPhone comes with a $30 Starter Kit.

  • +1

    how much unlocking fee?

    • -5

i don't think Apple phones are ever locked.

    • +2

      apparently free

  • Do you think Apple can price match this?

    • +1

spoke with the Apple Geeks in the Store last month
and he said that, Apple Store Highpoint, Vic., Does Price Match for an Old model (not the current one)
so might give it a try

    • Apple enforces a no price matching policy on phones.

With everything else its price match up to 10% (discount up to 10% only even if competing price is cheaper).

      • does that include ipod touch?

        • With everything else.

    • +2

Just tried at Apple Southland. Said he can't, it's a really good price. Picked it up from the Telstra store instead. Hoping I can unlock it for free.

      • Let us know if you have any luck.

        • No luck with live chat. I'll give them a call soon and post results. Fingers crossed :P

        • +1

Confirmed that all Iphones 5+ are unlocked via telephone support. I asked why they sell a prepaid and unlocked version and she just repeated that they're all unlocked. Haven't tried activating another sim though as the phone's a present.

How long is a piece of string?
    ;)

  • +7

Same price as Telstra stores have had for the last month or two so not the cheapest anywhere.

    Still a good deal though.

    • +5

JB have had this price for months as well.

      • +9

        Link for reference.

The JB deal has never expired, that deal is still relevant and should be marked as unexpired.

        • +2

Agreed. It's a long running "deal".

        • +1

@sween64: Already reported it but it was denied. I think it's a bit silly having the same deal reposted especially since it's long running.

        • @ShamelessBargains:

          Same. On both accounts.

        • @sween64:

thought i was the only one having a case of dejavu, this it the going rate for these phones. Not bad for those who arent a fan of the 4"+ models of iphone but apple will make this phone obselete with iOS "updates" as they always do.

  • +1

    Still a very good phone.

  • similar price with Nexus 5x 16G in JBHIFI, which one is better?

    • +7

5x is a more relevant phone, 5s is over 2 years old now. Unless you really like iOS operating system, 5x is clearly the better buy. 5s is expected by outdated soon by a smaller form factor 6 model further devaluing it too.

    • +4

This is only a bargain for Apple fans. If you're OS-agnostic, there are heaps of better options.

The Nexus 5X is clearly much better hardware in every respect. Much better screen, better processor, more RAM, superior camera, and for $20 less.

If you prefer a smaller device, the Xperia Z3 Compact is also a better device than the iPhone 5S in every respect and can be sourced for a similar price. Only downside is the lack of a fingerprint reader, but you do get much better battery life and waterproofing.

      • not a bargain for anyone selling at RRP is no bargain - this Telstra prepaid stock price set by Telstra at 499 price at JB is no different to anywhere else

      • +2

is the s808 really better than the A7? ime the s808 struggles in some area where the A7 doesn't. and better screen? I don't know if that is true either, I've read there's been plenty of issues with the nexus 5x screen. 2gb on Android with 1080p screen is probably no better than 1gb on the 5S with iOS 9.

Only issue I have with 5S is the screen size, great phone other than that.

        • +1

"is the s808 really better than the A7?"

Put them side by side and perform some common tasks, opening and closing apps and switching between them. Yes, the Nexus is clearly faster - especially with the RAM advantage, where apps can be resumed rather than re-starting them.

Webpages can be held in memory for longer too, where iOS devices with 1Gb RAM are known to reload pages from scratch - a common complaint until the 6S was introduced with 2Gb RAM.

"I don't know if that is true either, I've read there's been plenty of issues with the nexus 5x screen"

The Nexus screen has better colour, higher resolution and higher pixel density, plus it's larger. Touch targets can be larger while text is more easily visible at lower zoom. Yes, it's objectively a better screen.

Not sure about "plenty of issues" - Google is replacing those who are unlucky enough to have a yellow screen tinge. Manufacturing faults happen on all devices regardless of brand - the 5S isn't immune either, with a known screen fade problem.

The 5S is a decent device, but there's no way it's worth $500 when there are so many better options available. As I said, this is only a bargain if you're an Apple fan.

        • +2

@klaw81: 5s has clearly better build quality though. People feels the difference when actually using the phone, unlike desktop PC that only specs matter

        • @cloud226:

No most people buy device to USE but not to FEEL.

        • +3

          @klaw81:

Actually for app loading the 5X is slower than the original s800 powered nexus 5. See speed comparisons
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y4pKV3bS7c

The nexus 5 lost to the 5s in app loading speed when it was new. Hard to find speed comparisons now between the 5s and 5x. However that is only one aspect of performance anyhow, and doesn't prove the s808 is better or worse. What I have found is game performance the A7 still can play titles in highest details where the s808 tends to struggle. It probably comes down to the resolution screen choice mainly. I also found games on the s808 load considerably slower than they do on the iPhone. Now if you just loading apps and don't care about games, you probably be happy with either device.

I also found iOS tends to be better with memory management, you often see speed test on YouTube where the iOS phone with 1gb wins, not because it faster at loading an app, but because it doesn't reload apps as often as what Android does. I did however found when you get iOS devices like the original iPad air and iPhone 6 plus, that 1gb isn't enough on 1080p or higher resolution screens. However the iPhone 5s is a lower resolution device and make excellent use of its ram.

Being a larger screen isn't necessarily a pro, most people looking at this phone are looking at it because they want a smaller phone. It isn't for me, but when you start looking for premium small phones, then the 5s is pretty much the only offering out there. Even Android phone makers don't offer premium phones of this size.

        • @Ronnnie:

N5 with s800 is faster than the 5S when they are both new.

        • +1

          @Ronnnie:

Not really unfortunately, back in 2013 the timed app loading test was not that popular so you do not have many sample to claim who is the fastest.

But there are so many comparison between them that shows the n5 is always faster than the 5s.

Nexus 5 vs iPhone 5s - Benchmark + Speed Test
Google Nexus 5 Vs Iphone 5s Opening Apps & Multitasking Speed Comparison
Nexus 5 vs iPhone 6 - App Opening Speed

In your video, I noticed the the n5 is not so responsive when clicking home button which is not normal. I would guess the n5's s800 is throttled at the time.

        • @claud0902: I take you don't wear designers' clothes? ;) Functionality is just part of phone, when phone is such a personal device

        • @cloud226:

Sure, I only look at functionality. Phone to me is a PC in hand. And I believe the most are like me.

        • @claud0902:

          Goes hand in hand, IMO.
Phone aesthetics and feel all factor in to the overall experience.

        • @claud0902:

Always faster? The top link you shared I just looked at and it actually showed the iPhone winning the majority of the tests? Now if it was always faster it wouldn't win any tests? Though none of that proves the s808 is the better chip.

I have a G4 and the s808 isn't a great chip by any means, and doesn't offer any better performance than the what the iPhone 5s offers. Especially in games, you know stuff that actually tests the power of the processor, the iPhone will easily win. See games like GTA SA perform much better on an iPhone than the Nexus.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR1J2mybKM8

I get it though, you are a fanboy. :)

        • @Ronnnie:

Cannot you see in those videos the n5 always load faster than the 5s except geekbench takes a bit longer to finish.

Even one video shows the n5 beating the iphone 6 in a number of app loading. How would you conclude the n5 performs worse than the 5s from those videos?

        • @claud0902:

          1. No, I didn't see that. Look at the Instagram app load time, look at the temple run game. The tester even said in the video repeatably that the 5s was faster. I stopped watching after this video because it seems you think the nexus is better no matter what the result is.
          2. Comparing apps that only load in a split second anyway isn't really a good test to show which has the better processor.
          3. The geekbench mark was a better indicator of which has a faster processor. The A7 being 20 seconds faster at performing that test over the s800, and considerably scoring better where it counts in single core performance. I was surprise the A7 was that much better to be honest, and even against the s808 it still wins on single core performance.
          4. The booting up time was the only test where I saw the nexus win, but what I find interesting is this: The nexus 5 on kitkat took around 22 seconds in that test to boot. On Marshmallow it takes around 40 seconds to bootup from the one I linked to, and the 5x was around the same. Now on the other hand the 5s has gone from around 22 seconds on iOS 7, to 16 seconds on iOS 9.

          See test here:

          https://youtu.be/775h1fUh-Pk?t=2m51s

To alleviate klaw81 concerns and spreading false information about something he obviously has no idea what he talking about. I did a browser test on 1gb iPod touch running iOS 9. After 10 tabs it still wouldn't reload tabs. Now my nexus 9 with 2gb of ram starts reloading tabs after around 5. How many people load up 10 tabs on their phones?

I also tested a few games, see how many games I could load up without it resorting to reloading the games. Even with 3 games running in the background I could switch between all 3 without reloads. It really surprises me how well iOS handles 1gb of ram. Now it's true with the higher resolution screen devices that iOS doesn't do so well, but this is a lower resolution device which helps with performance. And 300+ ppi is perfectly acceptable pixel density anyway. Really I wish more phone designers were like Apple and made screens at sensible resolutions instead of wanting to put 4k on 5 inch screen. I prefer better performance and better battery life over more pixels than the human eye can distinguish.

        • @Ronnnie:

However in Android M the N5 perform similar to the days when it was released at Android 4.4, the 5s on the other hand, is slowing down in the latest iOS 9.

Yes, the iOS 9 turns on very fast, much faster than the Android M. But who needs this honestly?

One more note, the geekbench performs faster in the iOS does not mean that important than you have claimed. It is a cross platform benchmark solution and you will expect the process it takes to go through all the tests in different platform varies which caused the completion period difference. And at the end, the s800 beats a7 in overall performance. Do not get me wrong, single core performance is important but so does multi core performance. People claiming apple's high single core performance leads to overall faster performance than Android platform is false. The large reason here is due to excellent soc Apple makes plus, equally importantly, Apple's walled garden software optimization.

Nexus 5 is the fastest phone in 2013, not one of the fastest.

        • @claud0902:

Not really care too much about boot up times, boot up times only annoying on Android when it stuck optimizing apps for several minutes since lollipop. Tests that compare Apps and browsing that virtually open up instantaneous on any device, even lower end ones are pretty meaningless too imo. The nexus 4 was pretty much = with the nexus 5 under those type of tests too. Prefer seeing multiple apps open and stress the devices a little, which shows the 5s was much quicker than the nexus 5 under those types of circumstances. In comparisons I'd only prefer seeing apps or games that actually have long loading times, then you'll actually see how much faster the iPhones are. Need for speed no limits is one game that I play with long loading times, and is significantly faster loading on iOS than Android. Even the GTA SA game was much quicker loading on the iPhone 5s than the nexus 5.

Multicore performance is only good if you have software that can efficiently take advantage of those extra cores. Which Android and apps don't generally make efficient use of those extra cores. Its pretty sad actually the A7 still beats out current generation Qualcomm flagship chips in some area's. When you figure that 2 cores are almost the same speed as 4 cores, it's no wonder there can be such a huge difference in performance in some instances. It also highlights how far ahead Apple are with their designs.

    • OnePlus X @$290

      Plenty of comparos around.

      • -1

OnePlus phones are just too hyped. Some unknown Chinese company made it a big deal out of nothing by having online only, limited blah marketing.

    • I've read about lag issues with Nexus 5X. Haven't really seen that said about the iPhone 5S.

      • You obviously haven't been looking; it's a very common complaint.
        http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/24/iphone-slo…

There's also the common complaint about the lack of RAM and consequent reloading of webpages etc.
        http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/09/25/does-2gb-ram-really-…

        • True, I'm running iOS 9 on an iPhone 5 with no lag, so haven't been looking for that.

Note that Android requires more RAM than iOS due to GC vs ARC (garbage collection vs automatic reference counting).

        • @fredblogs:

That's true, you pay $1200 for the latest iPhone today, 2 years later you get $450 for it, you still have lost $750. You pay $500 for a similar spec Android, two years later you sell for $200, you are out of pocket $300. Though in two years, this phone will probably still sell for $200 too.

        • @Ronnnie: I would love to know where you can find an Android phone with similar spec selling at $500. Samsung with similar spec is selling at similar price. Indeed if you include all the unknown brand such as Elephone etc. Then it is an unfair comparison. I reluctantly pass on my iPhone 5 to my son because his high school friends are using iPhone 6 and Samsung S5. I am now using a very much lower grade Android phone because it is cheap $99 (1GB RAM and 4GB internal storage).

      • I use Nexus 5X and it's a good phone.

It is clearly a mid-ranger though with mid-spec Snap 808.

Mid-rangers these days happens to be so powerful that it's much better deal than flagships of 1~2 years ago (e.g HTC One M8, Galaxy S5, etc). Plus the added benefit of great finger printer scanner, which is kinda becoming a norm/must have feature.

If HTC One M9 had a fingerprint reader (forget about crappy ME or M9+ model with MediaTek chipset) I would still go for the M9 though.

      • -5

Let me tell you this. When the 5s and the nexus 5 both released at their time back in 2013, the nexus 5 with snapdragon 800 in it is the fastest phone in the world, beating the 5s with a7 already. You can still compare the two phones now in 2016, all I can tell you is the speed gap is more obvious as the android 6 makes n5 run better but the ios9 makes 5s slower.

Now people are comparing the 5s to the 2 gen later model nexus 5x with s808 and some think the former would be better performing?

        • Yes it's a valid comparison in terms of pricing point and where they currently place in the market. Flagship 2 gens before will compete with mid spec 5x.

        • +2

          @fidelio:

5x being named as mid spec is due to the comparison with android flagships but not apple.

          What 5x is missing is:
          no 1440p screen
          no stereo speaker
          no wireless charge
no top soc (however the 810 is a failure)

However the apple 5s does not have a single advantage against the above missing/lacking features from 5x. As it has:
          less than 1080p screen
          no stereo speaker either
          no wireless charge
a7 is no comparison to 808

Not to mention the camera on the 5x beats the 5s and the finger point scanner is faster on 5x.

So what is left? a laggy ios 9 (which is super fast on the 6s however) running on a 4 inch only screen (I am sure some people claim they prefer this size so go for it)

        • @claud0902: Main reason why I classify 5X as mid spec is due to Snap 808 being a hexa-core instead of octa-core of most flagship cpus, 2gb ram instead of 3/4gb ram, FHD display, plastic build, etc.

        • but the ios9 makes 5s slower.

I disagree with this. iOS9 has been running very well on my 5S, even on my old 5.
Beta 9.3 that was just released is even smoother.

        • @dbun1:

I do not have 5s to test. But I do have iPad mini 2 (same A7 and better heat throttle room due to form factor) and iPhone 6 Plus at home.

The iPhone 6p (bought from JB on release) starts to have occasionally crash which requires reboot to fix. It in general performs okay but you still notice some lags happening in iOS9.

And the iPad mini 2 (bought from DJ a few months ago) is just a pain to use in iOS9, keyboard always lag especially at the first time of use in an app; lags in app scrolling; the general UI is still Okay but I will not claim it "fast".

Based on the experience on these two devices and some comments from my friend who complaint about his 5s, I suppose the 5s would not perform any better than the above devices I own.

When you say something like "Smooth" or "Running well", they have to be put into context with something to compare. Some people also say the Moto G is very smooth; some say the Lumia 640 performs really well; Yes, they could be right, be only within limited context. But the devices like a Moto G or Lumia 640 never get a chance win a device with 2015 good process like s808. A7 was a good soc, but it is almost 2.5 year old.

        • @claud0902:

Sorry Claud, but I have not experienced any lag with my 5S running the latest iOS9.2

I was initially afraid to upgrade but have no regrets after doing so

        • @Riker88:

I have iPod Touch 6th gen (which is about = with 5s performance wise) and it runs excellent on 9.2.1. It even outperforms my LG G4 despite having the newer s808. For instance a game like need for speed no limits loads ~10 seconds faster on my iPod vs my G4, and the s800 devices are slower than that again. I'm not really a fan of Qualcomm, especially after using some lower end Android devices with MTK chips that are superfast even compared to flagship snapdragon powered devices.

It true iOS 9 when first released wasn't smooth even on my iPad Air 2. However 9.2 and 9.2.1 are definitely excellent. 3rd party keyboards have been the only issue I could really complain about on iOS, the recent swiftkey update has finally offered a swype keyboard that is smooth. Now hopefully Microsoft comes to the party and releases the wordflow keyboard for iOS.

The iPad mini 2 has to push around a significantly higher number of pixels compared to the iPhone 5s. I used to own an iPad Air and got rid of it because 1gb of ram isn't enough on a device with that resolution imo. I don't think you can compare the performance of what you seeing with the mini 2 with the presumption it'll be the same on an iPhone 5s, because of the resolution advantage. This is why I hate most Android makers jumping on the resolution war. I know QHD is benefit to people that use VR, but most people don't do that.

        • @Riker88: Agree. Smooth as baby's bottom.

  • +7

Ios vs android like mac vs pc depends on what you like not spec per $
I'd love an iPhone. Used to have one but can't afford anymore so now on android works fine.

    • +1

Yeah that's what I don't get when people compare them. An android phone might have better specs but if you like iOS it doesn't matter as much as when comparing two android phones.

  • +10

2-3 years and iOS updates will cease on this model. Very low memory.

Pretty expensive for an outdated phone.

    • +2

      Very low memory.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the memory is the same as all iphones up to (and including) the iphone 6? It's just the latest 6s which has more memory. Unless you're referring to storage…

  • +2

Leaving aside the merits of the phone etc, 16 gig is a bit on the squeezy side

    • Without expansion, yes. Very much.

    • depends what you load onto the phone ….. I back my phone up to my lap top and get rid of stuff I don't need so I can find stuff I do need, I have 128GB and use less than 16GB.

  • -3

Although I agree it is old phone and still very expensive but still a cheapest new iPhone for Apple fans who cannot afford. The software is clean and programs runs without any lag on iOS 9.2. Simply no no for Android fans or people who want to jump over.

    • +2

Maybe there are people out there who still like 4 inch phones?

      • Fair enough. i did not think about it.

if you are looking for an iOS device on a budget then this is a good deal. If you don't care whether it's iOS/android/windows then there are definitely better phones on the market for that price.

        • Have you bought one already? It will be good for you to update OP confirming this is a lock stock. I bought my wife a prepaid iphone 5c Dec 2014 from JB, also bundled as Telstra prepaid iphone 5c. But it wasn't locked. I pop amaysim in and it works like a charm.

        • @ausdday:
Nah I would never pay RRP for a 2.5 year old phone that's superseded before you use it but each to his own

  • It is definitely locked to Telstra

    • why the neg?
      Negs are only for JV!

  • Just hope it's still on iOS 8.4.1. Wish I could downgrade my 5S!

    • Really wish Apple would let people choose the iOS they want on their phones.

      • They let you, uh, not upgrade haha.

        • I have an i-device still on iOS 5.1.0. I want to upgrade to 5.1.1 or 6.x. Apple won't let you. Upgrade will go straight to iOS 9.x, which will make the device really slow.

        • @netsurfer: What do you have? Going from 5 to 9 would probably kill it, I don't think they let you upgrade beyond the limits of the device. My gf's old 4s couldn't upgrade beyond 7.
