Apart from being slightly more convenient is there any advantage of Play cards over a Telstra pre paid?
Telstra $30 starter kits regularly go for $10 and can occasionally be had for $5.

Not the same thing. Adv is the telstra credit gives you 1 mth of their $30 prepaid offerings and you needa use the $30 credit in one month before your plan expires
Don't know if it's the same thing as I've never bought Play cards but the $30 pre paid credit can definitely be used for Google Play purchases. If you're like me and don't buy apps often then activate as long life and you've got 6 months to use the $30.
Telstra credit is the cheapest way to get credit to spend in the Google Play store. You can use it for anything as long as it is billed through the play store, including IAPs.
The Play cards would be better as gifts or for people who don't want to have a Telstra sim to their name. You don't actually need to have the sim card in the device to buy with Telstra credit, as long as the gmail account is linked to the Telstra sim you can bill to the carrier. I have used my tablet to buy from the play store using Telstra credit via wifi. I am not sure if you can bill via carrier if there is a different carrier sim in your phone, however.
The main disadvantage to getting Telstra credit from new sims is that you have to register all new sims and you are supposed to declare that you have 'no more than 5 prepaid' sims to your name across all carriers. There is no penalty for having more than 5 AFAIK but you may be questioned (National security and all that). However, you can always pay a small premium on ebay and get credit me2u from a stranger online (usually pay $0.60-0.70 paid per $1 Telstra credit).

AFAIK the 5 sim card thing doesn't happen anymore. I registered a sim the other day for the 7.5GB data bonus and there was no declaration I had to tick.
