Aren't internet calls always free ?

    How is this a bargain?

    • internet is not required to make calls through rebtel.

Rebel Calling - Internet-free calls between Rebtel app users

Their marketing team missed out on an opportunity. Should have called it Rebel Yelling

    • That would have been better.

      • but then she cried- "more, more, more"

  • I expected this to be lame but this is actually somewhat interesting.

    • But is it useful?

I get about $600-$900 in call credits each month to call anywhere… I probably use about 10% of it…

  • So how do they connect ? GSM ?

  • With Rebel, the app uses a data (or wifi) connection to place an app-to-app call, and then routes that call through local phone lines. This uses up no data and doesn’t require wifi, letting users make international calls on the go without cutting into their data plan.

    • +9

the app uses a data (or wifi) connection

      then

This uses up no data and doesn’t require wifi

      huh ???

  • Shouldn't it just be referred to as "Free calls".

The whole bit about internet free has just confused me and many others here.

    • modified the title..does this make sense now?

Interesting concept this is…it's basically an App version of the old phone cards

  • I always use their free 'call back' feature. It looks like the app just acknowledges your incoming call on a receiver device and does the necessary outbound call for them? If so I hope the traditional free call back option isn't being discontinued. I love that aspect of Rebtel.

  • This is definitely not "Free Calls" if I understand correctly, you will be billed for local calls.
(it will be free if you have unlimited national calls)
"Internet-Free" Means it doesn't go through wifi or 3g data, you can still use it with wifi and 3g data disabled.
Interesting technology, I think this will be useful for calling overseas if call quality is good…

    • You will be billed for a short call whenever you connect which is better than the good old phone cards or just use internet to establish the call. At least the voice quality doesn't depends on your connection.

  • its unlimited calls to rebtel apps user so why is it different to Whatsapp or Viber etc. they do offer app to app calling as well, when I try to subscribe to the Unlimited calls free until 2017 it shows blank no activation button…. its not via app to any phone line.

    • you missed the bit about no wifi required (Which is not entirely true from what I gather from the comments; you still need to be connected to initiate a call)

      • +2

It uses a local call to initiate the call.

        LOCAL CALL

The call is placed through your mobile operator. Your call will be connected through a local number and connect you to your >international number. This means that you will be charged for a local call with your mobile operator (unless you have a flat rate >for local numbers) and for the international charges with Rebtel.

I don't understand how Rebtel saves me money. Even Telstra charges more for local calls than international. For example, Telstra Simplicity — 15 cents per minute Australia, 5 cents per minute international.

        • Thank You! I was scratching my head with this one..

  • Just read up some reviews on the company.
It looks like there is an automatic recharge setup on new accounts and apparently a nightmare to get your money back in case they charge you incorrectly.

Be careful when putting in your credit card details as it requested it as soon as I signed up. Of course I promptly cancelled the application.
Why advertise free calls then request credit card details?

  • Rebel Calling: 1 /month - Free until 2017

What does this mean? One call per month? One free call per month?

  • Seems the apps are only available from US Google/iTunes app stores
