    Vietnamese Tet holiday

Is this a deal for Kiwis ?

    I recommend a 3 day 2 night cruise.
I went there last year and it felt a bit rushed for the people who only stayed 1 night.
Also if my memory serves, it was about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Hanoi to Halong Bay, doing that drive twice in a day and a half would be less than ideal.

Did you get to see Tets ?

        Hi JV,
Tet eve is on 7th Feb, the most fun time of Tet is actually before that, when people doing Tet shopping, on the First on Lunar New Year things are more quiet, as family spending time together, things only get active again on mostly 3rd of Luna Calendar.

Tet in cities are not as fun as Tet in rural area, some there are festivities such as singing, dancing, traditional westling, chinese chess competition, rooster fighting, trade fair etc…

This cruising trip is standard trip to Halong Bay, just that the rate is lower due to low demand during Tet holiday in Vietnam.

I did a one night cruise and found it was more than enough. I lack tolerance for massive tourist churning machines though, and Halong Bay is certainly one of those. Pretty, but yeah.

Have to agree, 1 night is long enough, a beautiful area but after a couple of hours its time to move on. And as mentioned way cheaper to book when in Hanoi.

        • Very true about the booking in Hanoi part. Way cheaper.
I generally like to move on and see more stuff asap, but this was a nice break in the middle of four week trip.

We saw an old Buddhist temple, which we kayaked to, and a pearl farm on the middle day. That and some more swimming was all that the 1 nighters missed out on.

  • I paid $55 in Hanoi for the same tour.

I echo @legiong above. Definitely do the 3 day two night cruise. By the time you get off the bus from Hanoi and onto the boat it's already 1pm-ish. With all the activities they get you to do you barely get any free time and are off the boat at 11 the next morning for the 3 hour drive back to Hanoi.

  • One thing to know: pay as much as you like, you are not getting luxury cruising; not in the way we think of it in Australia. Be prepared for some annoyances. Non smoking may imply that the room above is full of smoking crew members, with the smoke permeating through the ceiling slats. The hot water may only be turned on for a certain period. Food may be of a low quality (toast = bread shoved in the mini oven for five minutes. No, not under the grill.) And so on.

This was our experience on the best boat we could find via OP's company, so I think it's just a whole different concept of luxury. I'd rate or boat as 2 stars at the most.

It's all good: you just should know what to expect.
