    • I feel that the X-rites are a better calibrator. But depending on we you are at, the spyder is a good start. For professional usage I'd go with the X-rite.

      • Which X-rite would you recommend?

        • Colormunki Display

        • Perhaps the Colormunki Display?

I had the older eye-1 / i1 display (the round one that looked like a mouse) and that was great. Again, back then it was more consistent than the Spyder 2 / 3 and I was much more confident in the colour representation by comparing the calibrators and their profiles. I bought the X-Rite Photo which does screen and printer profiles. That's great.

I've used the i1 Display Pro and that is just as good for monitor calibrations and most of my associates have that. I haven't used the cheaper Colormunki Display but I can't see any major difference in basic specs between that and the i1 Display Pro so I'd feel comfortable in recommending the Colormunki over the Spyder.

All said and done, it depends on where you are at in colour management. The Spyder will improve a display if you haven't done any calibrations but the X-rites are my preference. I hope that helps (?).

  • Is it better than i1Display Pro?

    • The x-rite is better by far.

Good deal. I prefer the i1, but really, it's just personal preference.

  • My Toshiba P50t has "Technicolor Color Certification" where (according to the website) the display is calibrated to deliver true colours. http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/p50t

Does anyone know if I need one of the Spyder devices? Thanks

The colors will change as the display ages, so eventually you'll need one if you want to maintain the accuracy.

    Bought one, thanks OP!

Bit the bullet and bought one.
Ive been driving me crazy for years with my photos.

  • While we have people experienced commenting, I've got a related query:

I was considering a simpler calibration device for my TV. Given that I'll have Garmin consoles, media served via plex and occasionally blurays… What do I calibrate it to? Is it simply getting colours at a similar level (delta e?) and grey scale properly setup or do I I follow a standard like rec. 709 or sRGB? I find this somewhat confusing.
