Awesome Valentines day present to myself

  • -8

They have been posted cheaper and likely to be posted again cheaper on ozbargain

  • Anyone put the EVO in a PS3?

    • There's an improvement but not as big an improvement as putting it in your PC.

The PS4 was not designed for SSD, due to other bottlenecks that make loading times still take long in spite of SSD. The SSD has to wait for the CPU, so its potential is not reached. Some games load twice as quick, some just a few seconds quicker.

Overall, for the performance/price-per-GB ratio, SSD is not worth it. You still get a good improvement from SSHD which is much cheaper per GB than SSD. That's probably a better option.

      • He was asking PS3. BTW, PS4 uses SATA II, so SSDs downgrade SATA III to II so that the bandwidth is chopped by half.

        • Well in that case, it's even less recommended. The PS3 has even more bottlenecks than the PS4.

SATA2 does bottleneck the SSD, but it's not the main bottleneck. Even at SATA 2 speeds, you expect a much bigger saving in loading time than you're getting with SSD on PS4. I would go as far as to say that including SATA 3 on PS4 would not have reduced the loading times at all. That is because the other bottlenecks are so bad that a SATA 2 drive loads no slower than a SATA 3 SSD. The SATA 3 will still end up waiting for the CPU, which let's be real, is pretty underpowered.

  • Anyone used an R8000 and able to comment on how it fares against the highly regarded R7000?

Have the opportunity to pick one up cheap and weighing it up against my existing Archer D9 (which seems fine for about 90% of my premises).

    • Sorry looking for advice about your Archer D9. How would it fare in a double storey house with the router at one end of the house on the ground floor. Looking to replace my Billion 7800NL.

If the R8000 is better please let us know as well :D

      • So I went from a Billion 7800N to this and in the same scenario - double storey house, but router upstairs.

Upstairs all works fine, downstairs at one of the furthest extremities the wifi signal is pretty weak.

I was potentially looking at a second hand R8000 for $100, and just wondering whether it would make any difference if added to the D9 for range. Alternatively I could use the R6300 I have spare as a wireless extender/AP for downstairs :)

        • +2

Unless your existing router has range issues due to being underpowered, a new wifi AP or router will only boost the attainable speed at the same range. That's assuming you have connecting equipment that supports newer AC standards.

If you already have an AC modem/router combo (bridged or all in one) then you are better off adding a range extender as an AP. Given you have a two storey home, your dilemma is finding the sweet spot in relation to items you require cabled up versus best wifi signal. If you haven't the need to cable anything to your downstairs AP then try and have them close together (e.g. directly under each other) to provide the best coverage for each floor and the strongest signal between the modem/router and AP.

FYI my range extender is the Netgear EX6200. The range is excellent and was the best I could get at the time else I would have sprung for the EX7000 instead.

      • Tested r7000 vs archer c9. Archer c9 won in terms of overall stability. It's perfect for my double storey house. No issues.

        • Being a network newbie in terms of bridging. Is it hard to do and is it worth it? From what I can see the Billion 7800NL is Broadcom as is the Archer D9. Worth spending the extra $ to save the hassle?

          Thanks.

    • +1

Isn't D9's a modem/router?? R8000 is just a router. TP-LINK counterpart will be a C9. R8000 is pretty much the same as the R7000. They just added an extra 5GHz band. They say you'll just benefit from it if you have too much traffic with the 5GHz band, it's just like providing an extra lane. With performance and range, they are just the same so it's not really an upgrade.

    • One of my mistake when buying Asus RT68U was thinking that it will improved my internet speed…

I've got an R7000 with the Merlin FW: http://xvtx.ru/xwrt/download.htm
Makes it SOOOO much better, specially if you use a VPN.

      • I agree that the Merlin firmware is the most stable and provides the features I most need.

Has anyone tried to price match the router with officeworks?

    • I just tried and Office Works declined it saying that it was not a proper store hence would not qualify for their price match offer

      • Yeah, just tried, no luck.

Is Futu Online a reliable seller?
I just made a Paypal payment and it goes to an hotmail address. That can't be a good sign…

    • +3

They have 120000 positive feedbacks on eBay. Does that answer your question?

    • I went on their website and checked their ABN, it is fine. When it is good to be true, I become doubtful…

    • I bought 2 HDD's from them last year and it was fine. However, I did email them for my invoice again but they never got back to me. I ended up finding the original email with the invoice though.

    • "That can't be a good sign…"
What makes think this ? hotmail is one of the longest existing free email platforms, and has long been part of Microsoft outlook system it is still one of the most used services for email. Millions of individuals, companies and organisations have used hotmail since its inception, and as such having a hotmail address does not instantly de-legitimize a company.

In regards to your question of questioning their reliability.
They have around 99.8% Positive feedback and over 150,000 transactions, they always seem to feature in these 20% off ebay deals and I have not heard of any issues with them. In my own experience I have purchased an "850 evo SSD" from them last year during the $100 voucher from click and collect there delivery seemed fast and reliable.

I'm sure the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB is $400 ish with the code as well…

Great router, bought this for $170 during the last eBay promotion. FYI- This router can be flashed with Merlin.

    • Hey mate could you tell us more about this merlin bit?

    • I just bought this router with the intention of flashing some custom firmware. Do you think Merlin/XWRT is the best? It can apparently also run DD-WRT or Tomato, but I've heard good things about Merlin.

I currently have a Billion 7800NXL, but have never player around with custom firmware.

      • +1

I'm yet to flash Merlin. From what I have read, the latest version of Merlin is pretty stable and does seem to be better than DD-WRT or Tomato.

        • Cool, thanks.

If you don't mind, what setup would you recommend for this router - it's just a router, right? I currently have two modem/routers: a Billion 7800NXL and a Sagemcom F@ST 4315 (through Belong that I have no intention of using). I presume I'd have to use one of them as the actual modem? Might do some further research on Whirlpool…

        • @dlaso: Yup, it's just a router. I have a tp-link modem/router which I have bridged it to act purely as a modem. Why don't you use the Billion as a modem?

        • @dlaso: Yes that is correct.

  • OK peeps, r7000 or ASUS RT-AC68U?
Or i just found out from the above post u can flash r7000 with merlin to make it function similar to the ASUS RT-AC68U

    • Definitely ASUS RT-AC68U. It is the superior beast and the ASUS settings GUI is 10x better. I think it costs more. Many whirlpoolers opt for the ASUS too.

      • Yep not on sale, and need a router soonish. Going to have to jump on this.

      • +1

I've been reading around both and seen more favour for the Netgear.. so I really don't think you can go too wrong.

      • My Asus broken after about 12 months of usage. Since I purchased it at Amazon, I can't get warranty from it…

    • I flashed my R7000 with Merlin, it's pretty solid, stock firmware has some bugs with their latest release so probably better off either getting the ASUS RT-AC68U or just getting the R7000 and flashing it with other firmware

      • I flashed it with dd-wrt and I cannot find any fault on it.

    • cant be wrong to get ac68u, ASUS team update firmware every month.

  • For what it's worth, I bought the D7000 modem/router a few months ago and paid about $350(?) for it. The unit is solid - never drops out. The WiFi signal is brilliant. I have a 38 sq one storey house and the unit is situated more or less in the centre in my study and it throws out sufficient signal to reach all corners of the house. Dual band works well for phones/tablets on one band and laptops on the other - media devices are hard-wired. I would imgaine the router would be equally effective and it is essentially the same unit - just no modem bits.

    • cheers, getting nbn so no need for the modem :)

    • Same here. I bought the D7000 last year and it has been superb so far. Very solid unit and I have never had any drop out either

samsung evo+ 32gb micro sd for $15.60 is also not bad:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-32GB-EVO-Plus-80MB-s-Micr…

  • Will that Kingston Ram be suitable for the Acer ES1-411 ( need low voltage 1.35V )?

  • How does this modem compare to say the one you get from telstra when joining up lol.
I have not had much hassle but they they say internet is not the best in the area but been ok for me.
I do watch a lot of netflix on apple tv and go online a bit and stream from ipad to apple tv with the odd times issues.
And im about to set up a box soon so i can stream more stuff etc.

What do i benifit from this over my current one? Stronger signal?

      This isn't even a modem

Just bought the i7 6700k for $476. Cheapest on staticice is $519. $43 saving isn't too bad + the further 2% in cashrewards.

    • +2

would go nicely with a G1 GTX 970 for $464
best i could find on static ice was $515

now anyone think i can convince the missus a new GPU for my gaming rig is better than a weekend at a winery?

  • Tossing up between the R7000 and EX7000 as second access point to extend the range of my home network.

~$25 difference in price, anything the R7000 (in AP mode not router mode) will give me over an EX7000?

    • +1

I was in same boat, read the forums and found out that R7000 has more RAM and storage. Also has better range. Worth the difference I think…

      3rd post down: http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/netgear-ex7000-…

      • Yeah, saw that exact thread.

Thing is, I don't think I'd need extra storage or RAM as it's just going to sit in AP mode the whole time, already have a rock solid router. Does the R7000 have better range?

Not too fussed about the $, just a standing AP works better than one laying down as standing can sit on the desk but laying down has to go underneath (although not a deal breaker).

        • I did read somewhere it was better, can't remember where. Also thought wouldn't hurt to have R7000 ready as a backup router if I ever needed it rather than purely an Extender to a main router. Worth it IMO for the $19.20 difference in price and getting full functionality.

  • "You're currently winning or have bought the maximum allowable amount of this seller's items in the last 10 days."

Anyone else get that error when trying to add the r7000 to their cart? Have already purchased the micro sd card separately because it wouldn't let me add them together.

    • I got that error after putting in an offer (instead of adding to cart). Seems they have implemented a "1 item per account" rule or something.

      • Grrrrr now I can't buy the r7000. Have contacted support. Might just have to use someone elses ebay account.

        • +1

Can you checkout as a guest?

        • @pthurgood: Thankyou however getting another error now.

"Sorry, but we're not able to process your request right now.
If you encounter this message more than once, please contact us, and we'll do our best to help."

        • @youngfox: They've fixed your first problem. Should be able to buy it now.

        • @spaghettiman:

Still getting the same error. Going to end up missing the damn deal.

Update - ended up doing them one by one as guest.

    • What a great router! Solved all my issues!

Stupid question though…do I plug wired connections into the router or modem? Does it matter?

  • +2

Hi, just purchased one :) i hope its better than the telstra cg3100 .. its wireless coverage is not that great and i have to reset the bloody thing all the time.

    • The cg3100d-2 was a bit of an upgrade but I find that these cable modem/routers are rubbish when it comes to WiFi. I've upgraded to the CG6300 but that's even worse. I've now just purchased the r7000 hoping it'll fix my WiFi issues that I've experienced across all three. Resetting it all the time is real annoying.

  • I still need an ADSL router for the R7000 to be able to connect to the internet?
Do I need to get a very expensive ADSL router to match the performance?

    • +1

      https://www.wireless1.com.au/tp-link-td-8840t-adsl2-modem-ro…

If you are using ADSL, yes you need an ADSL Modem. There are a few models of wired ADSL modems available that you can buy, which lacks any wireless functions and needs to be wired up to a seperate router.

The cost / price of the modem is unimportant — they are mostly the same under the hood — usually just based on Broadcom or Trendchip modem chipset.

  • Damn, missed out on the GTX 980 :(

  • The QNAP TS-453 Pro for $548 delivered is a good $100 cheaper than I can find elsewhere online.

any chance it will be back on stock soon?

  • Would the Samsung 250GB 850 EVO Series Solid State Drive work in a 2010 mac mini?

    • Not 100% sure, but as long as it will take a standard 2.5" HHD this should fit as these are the thin 7mm. drives.

  • Any chance on more r7000s?? They seem to be ask sold out on the eBay store…

    • Restocked

      • Thank you!

        • Received my router today! Lighting quick courier service. Will order from you guys again.
