For anyone interested, last I checked these have WD Reds in them.

    • Last time I bought a 5TB version for $172 from HN. It has a WD Red inside. There is not such deal anymore.

      • +1

Anyway to find out without opening it?

        • Use crystal disk info.

        • @fatice: Think he means without opening the box so he can make the right choice at the store and I don't think that's possible.

    • +1

The two I bought during the recent Harvey Norman sale both contained Greens.

      • Luck of the draw. I bought one and it had a Red.

    • then $218 is a great price.. WD RED NAS 5TB HDDs are $319 at MSY

    • -1

I have the 4TB and it contains WD Greens… There's no way at this price these have "WD Reds" in them, since just the 5TB WD Reds cost $100 more (without the case). That's why I highly doubt these are WD Reds.

    • +1

serious? my 4TB i just bought of this type had a WD green.

    • what is DCM code: DCADBAD on the box bottom label or DCADBAC? Have you bought it from JBHiFi?

      • +1

The one I got from ShoppingExpress a month ago is just DCADBA, no C or D, and it is a green.

        • thanks for the reply. +ed

I got this for $172 from the Harvey Norman deal. I find it pretty slow to wakeup and buffer, eg have to wait several seconds to start a movie, and skipping can sometimes lag. Not that impressed with it.

    • i have one and it works fine

  • Can these be easily taken out should the psu ever fail?

    • +1

      External plug pack.

    • +1

      Probably have external PSU

    • +1

very easy, will take you 2 minutes with a butter knife.

    • +1

As others have said, super east 5 minute job. It's a standard 3.5" drive inside.

  • -2

I heard that the drives can no longer be taken out of the case and used due to some kind of encryption lock…is this true or just rubbish I'm reading on the net. I'd like to buy one, remove the drive and use it in my case.

    • +1

i purchased the 4TB version of this 2 weeks ago and just took it out last night. butter knife to take the case apart, then 1 screw to remove the chip that converts the power to sata power. i doubt they put a lock on it.

    • +1

This. Just had a friend's WD Elements die on him, I can't get the data off because of the encryption.

Sure I could wipe the drive and use it for something else, but that won't get his home movies back.

      • Backup your data people
      • Dont put anything on a WD Elements that you will really, really miss if it dies.

  • -6

You should mention first thing in the description that its cheaper at futu. dont want people paying more than they need to.

  • +1

My first time post english not well that why :(

    • +1

Just brought 2 reds from Futu, I've never seen reds in the other 4 I have brought, but tempted

      • Have you bought recently 2 from futu? When? And the other 4 from bought from where and when?

  • -2

It appears that this deal is still getting clicks although the cheaper futu deal is now also on the hotpage. Since there is no clear warning that the futu deal is cheaper in the description, I'm going to have to neg it, sorry.

    • +2

As Futu have sold out :'( might be worth considering removing your neg…

  • Thanks - got one!

  • I'm sure if I 'wait it out a bit longer the price would surely drop to the sub-150 mark… But it's an alright price for now. Also, dont' know about you but I'm more of a WD brand fan rather than 'seagate' or 'toshiba' brand

  • Picked one up at Roselands, about 5 left there.
Got a WD green inside, speedtests were 160 MB/s sustained write and read
