  • N00b Q, will this work for torrenting?

    • +8

Some servers - looks like countries that aren't likely to issue nasty letters, but the speeds might be a tad slow. Looks like Netherlands is the one to use
      https://support.purevpn.com/p2p-file-sharing

Also here's a spreadsheet from Reddit comparing VPN providers & their security features
      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FJTvWT5RHFSYuEoFVpAe…

      • N00b Q 2: After reviewing the chart, which one is the safest and fastest in your opinion?

        • +1

Depends on what you're wanting to do.
Consensus on Reddit appears to favouriVPN & NordVPN as apparently the safest from prying govt eyes.
But have a squiz at Reddit VPN Coupons for discounts to various VPN providers
          https://www.reddit.com/r/vpncoupons

For speed, well most speeds out of Australia are slowish, although Tesltra appears to QoS VPN traffic as a higher priority, so a VPN might increase speeds. Sign up for a trial & test (if they don't offer one, then ask if you can have a day trial)

If it's for torrenting, I'd chose a non US/UK provider & chose a non Aus/US/UK/Canada exit node, just to cover yourself. If it's for Netflix, then I'd wait a few weeks for the current duststorm to settle down as some are affected (such as PIA) &others aren't

I'm eyeing off TorGuard (as I don't torrent) as they have 1250 servers in 43 countries, which should cover pretty much everywhere I'd want to pop into. with a discounted $us30/yr it seems quite reasonable.

Bought this deal 2 months ago, works ok for torrenting on Netherlands server, but not the most amazing speeds (2mbs I've seen it Max out too, average around 1-1.5mbs on most torrents), and im on nbn ftth. Works fine for Netflix, no geo block. Limited to 5 devices ; Be aware that if you intend to configure this in your router, it will cost extra per year.

      • Oh how would they know if you config'd on your router vs device?

Netflix doesn't work by the way, and it seems like they have no intention of fixing it.

    • What are you talking about? I used Netflix with PureVPN all the time from various clients and they all work to the US / Japan and any other country.

      • I've tried both smartdns and their dedicated servers for Netflix and they are all blocked by Netflix. If you refer to their website their suggested solution is to buy another one of their packages to get a dedicated VPN.

        • I dont use SmartDNS at all - but I am using the older client that allows you to select Netflix US. Its working fine this way and I'm accessing all the US shows that isnt available on the Aus one (eg. Law & Order SVU, X-Files etc).

Tried many on this list and working fine for me..
          http://www.finder.com.au/netflix-australia-vs-netflix-us-tv-…

    • Ive had Smart DNS issues with Pure VPN but have had netflix work ok with their smart DNS (not tried the VPN for netflix)

Issue for me was…if my IP changes then my whole internet drops until you remove the PureVPN Smart DNS config in the router, update their servers with your new IP, then update your router DNS with their Smart DNS numbers

    • I raised a ticket and was given a specific server address to use for Netflix USA. This worked but UK still didn't work. The respondent said it was due to recent Netflix policy changes "but do not worry about it at all as we are already working on it, and as soon it will be fixed we will update you."

Apparently, getting a dedicated VPN IP address works since part of what Netflix checks for is if lots of ppl using a particular IP address. Dedicated IP addresses are ~$us50/yr and also I imagine a separate plan would be needed for each country.

  • PureVPN or Getflix Full VPN?

  • They posted a fix for netflix recently. I can confirm it works for PPTP. If you have any issues you can just email their support & they will help.

On the 2yr for 1 deal posted a few months back. wish this was around.

  • Having used CyberGhost I can say that this is not the easiest VPN to use. Has many strange options. Very hard to configure the Internet kill switch! Good price though. I too got it through the deal while back, but with the effort required to configure it and still not getting the ease of use it is not the best.

    • -1

Huh? this is for PureVPN not CyberGhost though.

      • Read the comment again!"Having used CyberGhost I can say that """this""" is not the easiest VPN to use.

  • Can you configure PureVPN for each device instead of the router? Does this deal include Smart DNS?

    • Yes you can. Remember as I said earlier it has several modes P2P, Privacy, blah and blah…while others offer just VPN and it does all. I am not sure why PureVPN has all the options! Upgrading the SW is a pain as it kills the VPN where as some other providers download the updates over the VPN and then kill the internet, update the SW and start again. Have not found this option with PureVPN! Speed wise has been OK not major difference from other providers.

  • if have existing subscription can add this on?

    • No you cant. I had to create a new account for my lifetime subscription as well last time.

  • Not good on a Mac - limited options and slow in some. Avoid.

  • Is it easy to set up?

  • argh got the two year deal a few days ago. Been working fine though. HAven't been able to get it working with netflix, any tips?

    • See my post above. Raise a ticket.
