Free data for all Telstra mobile customers this Sunday

While the outage was short in duration we fully realise the impact it had on our customers, which is why we are offering all of our customers a day of free mobile data this Sunday. Customers don’t need to do anything to receive the free data, it will happen automatically for all of our mobile customers.

Free data is available from midnight to midnight (in your local Australian time zone) Sunday 14 February 2016. It’s available to both our personal and business customers on post-paid and pre-paid phone, tablet and mobile broadband plans.

EDIT 11/2 7.20PM: Confirmed by a Telstra rep: You do not need to have any credit on your prepaid sim ($0 balance) to access unlimited data on Sunday

      I hope so. KKona

    • Probably give it a shot

    • Don't even have to activate it.

  • +2

I do appreciate Telstra giving us this compensation but would have preferred it to be a weekday rather than a Sunday. That way I can tether and watch YouTube videos in the background while at work.

    • +1

Nationwide mobile data usage is lowest on Sunday

      • -2

Based on what data? Weekends are when my website see's the highest amount of traffic.

        • +1

No data here, but I'd think it would have something to do with a lot of people having the day off and using their home internet instead.

    • -1

Or do work at work but whatever.

    • +1

I would have preferred the cash!!

  • +4

I first read this as a free sundae (ice cream) - disappointed to find it is only free data :(

    • +1

Thanks for clarifying, I was wondering where the free sundae offer went.

  • -7

Free Data still won't make me happy

Me and my friend with Telstra Service down on Sat 7FEB and friends next to with Vodafone have FULL SIGNAL = =

Its annoying when u have a phone with no network, no calls, no sms, no whatsapp, no line

    • +6

You comment would have more creditability if Saturday the 7th of February actually existed!

    • +3

      Then switch to Vodafone

    • This might be a little bit more of a legitimate reason if the issue you observed on the weekend was related to yesterday's outage. But it wasn't. Since yesterdays outage only occurred yesterday…..

    • What would make you happy?

These things happen. I'm not even sure what kind of SLA's (if any) apply to Telstra mobile customers..

  • Will this include BigPond wireless?

    • unlikely

    • actually it ended up including bigpond wireless and a bunch of mvnos…

  • +1

A better olive branch would've been free data weekend.

  • +8

    Thats a lot of porn

    • +15

The single lads need something to do on Valentine's Day!

    • Redtube is gonna get hammered

  • +1

Awesome. Going to be interstate this weekend with limited wifi access, so this is going to come in handy.

  • -2

Difference between vodafone data-free days and telstra? Telstra have customers!

  • +5

Who's going to download the most data they possibly can on Sunday?

Post your high score screen shots here on Monday morning :)

    • yes will do, I prepared some links to download HD movies. The most data I used on Vodafone in a single day is 17Gb (when I was on Data Workout)

  • +2

Awesome, I might give Netflix 4K streaming a spin.

Or finally add my NAS to CrashPlan…

  • for those who are planning on going nuts…
this is telstra… just to play devils' advocate
just be careful - they'll find a way to stuff up again and charge excess data somehow

    pretty crap offer…
with the current plans (i have 7gb) have no need for additional downloads…
rather have a discount off my bill instead

    • +1

Upload all your junk to the cloud should be decent upload speeds.

      • +3

        should be decent upload speeds.

not when every man and his dog are downloading stuff all day…

        • +2

Take the iPad away from you dog it's valentines day, give him a pigs heart to chew on.

        • So internode pet WiFi became a thing did it?

        • not when every man and his dog are downloading stuff all day…

I've still got about 15mbps up speed.

they'll find a way to stuff up again and charge excess data somehow

Works with unactivated $2 SIM if your paranoid

      • good for those who can find a use for it i guess…
but having unlimited/large fixed line internet speeds … i'd stick with the opinion a discount off the bill would've been more welcomed :)

    • So you're complaining about this offer because Telstra already gives you enough data on your current plan.

      Oh the irony.

  • What is a good cloud storage for all my files?

    • +1

Copy gives away up to 25GB…. and… it's gone.

  • +5

sweet time to torrent 10TB of stuff over 150mbps

    • +1

      ~1.6TB*

    • Sure… "stuff"

    • +6

This is why Australia can't have nice things… :P

  • +1

I have a activated sim with freedom plus credit data expires today, does this mean I still get this offer on Sunday?

    • yeah. even works with unactivated sim

  • +1

Wow this is really interesting, not least because it will be a good test to see how well their network holds up under extreme congestion.

Personally I have over 1TB which needs to be uploaded to Dropbox, so I'm going to see how much I can manage to upload over 4G (Telstra 4G upload speeds can be pretty good 20-100 Mbps Up, and no NBN unfortunately).

Sorry to the folks who actually need data this weekend.

  • +6

Erg, can't believe 4G is beating most of our fixed line connections.
Serious Australia! Harden up!… (your fixed to the premises internet services)

  • +3

    Does this include corporate plans?

  • Bulk downloads Sunday

    Network will be so slow

    • you'd think so but still going strong in myrtle bank, sa. 1MBps download speeds on torrent.

  • +1

Would aldi mobile be included as well?? Aldi is renting telstra line..

  • +2

Probably another outage on Sunday as everyone will be leeching including all the people on $2 sims. It would have been better if they only allow existing customers not new ones since outage

Upload your life or better yet take all your sims out.

  • Do Telechoice customers get free data as well?

    • The question that you have to ask yourself is why would Telstra give bonuses to the customers of a different company, particularly one which has under cut them in the past?

Telechoice would have to sanction this if they were wanting to do it. Telstra have no involvement with Telechoice subscribers.

    • yes

  • Does it mean post paid/pre paid mobile Telstra
When does it start and finish
Is there any catches to it.

    • yes postpaid and prepaid. starts at 12am and ends at 11:59pm in your local time zone today. no catch. unlimited upload and download on telstra 4g all day

  • -1

Does it include Telstra mobile to non Telstra mobiles?

    • It's free data all day. Your comment would be implying that you intend making a call from a telstra mobile to a non telstra mobile.

  • +2

I wonder if Telstra would consider unlimited data plans if we pass their test and control ourselves for just ONE day…

  • +1
  • Im gonna unleash the fury that day :).

    Thanks

    • Wonder if this will end up being Meltdown Sunday

      • it's ok right now in myrtle bank, sa. 1MBps download speed on torrents

  • +2

Keen to use this to do some cloud backups too.

Just used the speedtest app on my phone to test the speed at my house: 58.52 Mbps down / 36.53 Mbps up.

Did some calculations and about the maximum I will be able to upload in 24 hours - I believe it's about 350-400GB (@35Mbps). That also assumes that the all servers I'm connecting to will allow me to saturate the connection. More likely it would be decent to assume you could upload about 200gb maximum with all things considered.

    This should be fun! :)

    • Yeah. Based on 35Mbps I calculated 370GB. Are you going to be awake at midnight to start it?

      • ive definitely considered it. just gotta remember it's valentines day this day as well, may get in trouble with the mrs if i spend all day uploading :p

      • a quick update on this… i started my uploads at 12:03 am. 2 x threads to Microsoft & Google. have only managed to upload 10gb or so in 11 hours. so much for this idea :/

        • I haven't been awake or home enough to maximise my uploads. I should be able to manage 20 - 30GB by the end of the day. I'm using the OneDrive Windows 10 desktop app. Seems to be the most reliable. I was using the web browser interface but it kept crashing.

        • @sween64: I should be able to upload all my photos from 2004 - 2012 so I'm happy.

  • +4

I can't wait to abuse the hell out of this with 4GX speeds.
It will be sweet revenge for all the times they've screwed me over.

  • Anyone got a Netgear AirCard 810S to use with this? 450 or 600mbps maybe. LTE Cat 11.

I'll be trying to use my Telstra 4G Advanced Pro X. Should give 300mbps cat 6. LTE Cat 6.

    4GX Advanced III = LTE Cat 9

    • +1

Im not sure aboutthose speeds. These are some telstra quotes:

"While today the Advanced Pro X working on Telstra’s 4G 1800MHz network will support very brisk download speeds of between 2 Mbps to 50 Mbps in 4G areas – our testing of the devices LTE-A capability (which supports theoretical maximum peak download speeds of 300Mbps) "

I did some poking around and rarely see anyone getting much more than about 120mbps down and 40mbps up.

Not sure those fancy new devices will make a huge difference.

      • One would have to make sure whatever internet server is being accessed is able to serve those high speeds. Otherwise it'll be like expecting the new gigabit ethernet interface on your desktop to pull files in at 100MB/s over ADSL2+. :)

        • 40mbps seems to be the limit for up.

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2226902

Carrier Aggregation does wonders for downstream though…

In any case, if you want fast upstream, just go to a Telstra Store, with FTTP and use the Telstra Air network. Some of them have 150mbps upstream.

        • @futaris: Do all / most Telstra stores have this service? Is it free? (would like to upload a TB)

        • @Charity:

Some. In SE QLD, the two that I know of are at Loganholme and Browns Plains.

The other stores generally only have ADSL or maybe Telstra Cable connections.

    • Happy days for this person

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Telstra-Wi-Fi-4G-Advanced-II-Netg…

How much are these outright? Google is failing me.

  • +2

Let's see how the mobile network stands up, or not, when it gets hammered.

Speed tests you do today may be totally different to what you get on Sunday when everyone is leaching

  • -2

This isn't going to give me anything. I don't download stuff just for the fun of it. We've paid for next Sunday - data wise, so how is Sunday's data free? Only excess if you want it is. If on the other hand they extended subscribers recharge date by a day and attach a prorata amount thenthat would give me something.

Free data my arse, it seems to have sucked a few in here plus excited the usual data hogs.

  • +4

So basically there is going to be another outage on Sunday

    • not so far. 1MBps torrent downloads in myrtle bank sa 4gx

  • Actually something i'm happy about. Moved recently and have had issues in getting my home internet setup (Telstra line people, delays and delays), which means lots of extra data usage, especially on weekends, and no downloading. Now 24 hours to my hearts content :)

  • +1

So as long your sim is working right? Does it need credit?

    • Hang on, that's too hard a question to answer.

    • same deal iv'e used the 3gb credit on a $30 sim that expires next month..will credit have to be added or will it be valid as is for sunday?

    • You do not need credit, updated in original post

      • hope so…i got a seeking clarification reply from a Community Manager at telstra's crowd support.

  • On SUNDAY FREE DATA:

Will ALDI Mobile (Telstra MVNO) customers get FREE DATA?

Will Woolworths Mobile (Telstra MVNO) customers get FREE DATA?

Will Lycamobile Mobile (Telstra MVNO) customers get FREE DATA?

Will Boost Mobile (Telstra MVNO) customers get FREE DATA?

Which other Telstra MVNO will get free data on this Sunday?

    • If your MVNO hasn't told you anything, then I'd say no. An MVNO customer is not a Telstra customer.

      • -4

        Wrong.

BOOST MVNO gets FREE data this Sunday:

        http://ausdroid.net/2016/02/11/boost-customers-are-also-gett…

        • +5

          Wrong.

          What is wrong?

I said "If your MVNO hasn't told you anything, then I'd say no."

          Today, Boost did say something.

So it's a yes for Boost. But still no news from the other MVNOs.

        • Wrong on your wrong.
