Free data for all Telstra mobile customers this Sunday

While the outage was short in duration we fully realise the impact it had on our customers, which is why we are offering all of our customers a day of free mobile data this Sunday. Customers don’t need to do anything to receive the free data, it will happen automatically for all of our mobile customers.

Free data is available from midnight to midnight (in your local Australian time zone) Sunday 14 February 2016. It’s available to both our personal and business customers on post-paid and pre-paid phone, tablet and mobile broadband plans.

Can some add that Telechoice is included - use Telstra 3G

    Post via Facebook:
Hey Telechoice. I'm with you guys. I love your service. I got Mum and Dad to join up too. I saw online that Telstra is giving all users free data all day Sunday. We use Telstra's 3G network with Telechoice. Do we get free data this Sunday too?

    Telechoice reply:
    Hey Kimberley,
Yes, TeleChoice customers will also get free data this Sunday. This free data will apply from Sunday 14/02/2016 12am AEDT to Monday 15/02/2015 3am AEDT. Please PM us if you needed any more info.

So it actually ends at 3am on Monday.

    Not 11:59pm.

3 more hours of cheap (free) thrills!

    • +5

What an uneducated comment. Why do you feel the need to abuse something that's been given to you in good will. I bet you weren't even affected by the recent outage. Irritates the hell out of me reading stuff like this where people think it's their god given right to take take take, then have a nice old sook when they miss a deal. Why not go easy instead so others can also share whatever limited bandwidth there is on the day.

  • -2

Sweet gesture.. 24 hours out of 8,670- 13 of which are day light. Same thing Voda got up to years ago. My Oneplus one is limited *50gb storage , not before I clear some though.
If it was consistent and unmetered one 1/6 of 365 days, even @2300-0300am, this could be meaningful and would rate slightly above voda 26 G @ $12.
I also agree we are Asia pacific; no need to follow American $50/2gb emblem IMO.

  • +1

    60Mbps down and 38 Up, I'm ready Telstra ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • Will a $2 Sim work without a recharge, credit.

    • +2

No clue. Use what you might muster to represent your suburb though. This is called network stress-testing,ime: deliberately designated to a quiet section of the w/e,Sundy. Might throw a tokenistic 20 G effort in myself as I rather to not have my tower underrepresented in priority future capacity planning. (i.e once we drop the whole goodwill/marketing angles & help telecom( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

      • +1

        Great idea

And If those $2 Telstra Sims work without any credit.

you could install VMware virtual machines on your PC. Install Linux, or Windows as a trial, for each VM. Put the $2 Telstra Sim's in those Vodafone USB modem's, or even better a 4g modem or phone. Connect each modem to a VM. Install Firefox and DownThemAll, and start downloading.

      • Exactly - cannot do any wrong from tonight/tomorrow.

    • yes it works without credit. doesn't even need to be activated.

  • Just in case anyone wondered, BigPond mobile broadband is included as well according to https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Free-mobile-data-for-…

  • +1

This is currently working for me. 40 mins earlier than planned :)

  • Working already 100gb already!

did they cap the speed? rip voda did it better

    • +2

Nope, I'm getting speeds of up to 40Mb/s down

      • :(

    • +1

      I'm getting 42 down, 27 up.

  • +2

It's now on everyone :) Faster than my ADSL2+

  • It's 2-3x faster than my ADSL2 but I can't seem to get 4G working? Phone only shows H+. I know it's enabled.

  • +1

Sim that expired on 15/12/15 working as well, 3.8MB/s here

  • +1

Using this to grab a couple of large Steam games. Since Telstra ditched the unmetered servers it's been a pain downloading huge games without nuking my NBN data allowance… Only averaging 600 kb/s with my 4G though as I am not exactly in the metro haha! Still awesome however!

  • +1

    Getting 4.6MB/sec, pretty happy. 16GB a hour

  • Just unboxed 4G hotspot sourced DSE@$24 (MF90) to try old Data Pass sim.
Data is flowing! Zerorated Sunday: Getting from 1 bar of Band3 511 kB U 2594 kB D 21 ms from Sydney@00:35.

  • Getting <144Kb/s not happy :(

  • Getting 50Mb/s today (normally 80Mb/s) and 8.9MB/s peak on Steam.

    • I didnt even think of steam! Currently downloading all my spotify.

  • getting a solid 20mbits from Xbox via hotspot from my phone :) going to be a hell of a day for this :)

Telstra site already showing 20gb of free data used X-D

    • where is the telstra site that tells you how much free data you have used?

      • you need to have an account to see the data usage or Telstra 24/7 app

        • I'm only being shown usage from 13 Feb or before.

        • @realfancyman:

It needs sometimes to refresh the data, check it again later.

        • OK, thanks @divious.

      • Under Post Paid, login to your 'My Account' then select data then the top shows 'View detailed data usage' then select your number and it shows 'Free Period' currently at 80GB :)

Its about 30min or so behind but its normally pretty spot on

This is via the Website as well so not sure about the app comment above,

  • +1

oh crap…everything was going well, now my phone is saying Sim error…sim card is missing or invalid?

    Any chance Telstra did this?

edit: my sim is working again, maybe my phone just overheated from all the tethering..and temporarily it wasn't working.

  • +1

If you are on a plan that gets shaped, chat to telstra 24/7 and they can unshape it for today, yay!

    • wouldn't that happen automatically?

  • Does this mean that if you are on any Telstra's prepaid mobile plan with data limit you can turn off WiFi and download via 4G free?

    • Well yes…I have 1.3 gb on my data (unused) and I have downloaded about 7 gb so far…..plus watched a football match

  • +3

    I'm getting 85Mbs, normally ~130Mbs so it's either throttled or congested :p

    • congestion most likely
      eventually speeds will drop

  • +1

getting pings of over 120ms now :(

    • Got exact same and only 40Mbps.

  • Ewww… only getting 8Mbps now.

  • +8

It would be hilarious if Telstra screwed this up and everyone got a massive bill for today's use.

    • I would lol

    • That's why you stay on Prepaid, (further more expired sim!)

      • I am on pre-paid but I have $200+ balance. I' dbe more than a little miffed if I woke up tomorrow to find all of that gone :o

        • buy a $2 SIM. Don't even need to activate it. you still get the free data.

    • Telstra made the 1800 calls free a while back.

Made a rare call to a 1800 number and found out that I was still charged.

Took a couple of calls to eventually get it sorted out. The first call center didn't even know what I was on about, despite the free 1800 have been in effect for months.

  • +3

    Used to get 3-4 MB/sec.
    Today im getting 1.5 :)

The network is getting pumped lol.

    • +1

no issues for me in narangba qld
depends on your local node given i have a 4g antenna locked onto a few towers helps speeds greatly

  • +1

4G is getting destroyed at 2-5mbps. I'll stick with my FTTP thanks.

  • +3

I just downloaded 12gbs worth of ps4 game updates. Would normally take forever on my adsl2 connection!

  • free data and freeleech.. nice:)

  • +1

Bought a $2 SIM yesterday, tried to activate it this morning and got told it was invalid/already activated. Yay! Now sitting in queue for online help.
e: gave up with online help (was #1 in queue for 20mins) and called them. The guy on the phone couldn't activate it either. Love this company.

  • +7

Still getting unlimited data even with an unactivated $2 SIM.

  • +1

I started uploading my photos/home videos collection at midnight last night, have 30000 jpgs and 250GB movies. Split the uploads up onto 3 different PCs using 3 different wireless 4G modems, hopefully it will all be done in time!

    • -5

Unless you are near 3 different towers, it will take the same amount of time. The bottle neck is the 4G spectrum.

      • +1

There'd be other users on the tower so having 3 modems means you get 3 times the spectrum slice given to a single user

  • Speeds around the normal 40Mbps, not sure what Sundays normally are around me but weekday speeds are 40-60Mbps.

Latency is really high @ around 177-280ms lol.

  • Getting worse speeds than my landline :( Usually I get 40+mbit/s on 4G This sucks

  • -2

Does it include inernational calls as well?

    • +3

      no
pretty obvious if you read the link

  • -1

Eh getting better speeds on my unlimited FTTP connection at 100/40

    No thanks Telstra.

    • +1

      your opinion

im getting 40 down 40 up
      4g 2 bars

      4gx galaxy note 4

better than my 5km adsl 2 rural run which yields 3000/800 on a good day

      win some lose some

    • +1

I don't know why you thought 4G would get those speeds today.

      • -1

I can achieve it using 4GX, well did during midnight-7am or so, congestion has hit it down to 70/20 or so

        • yes i said today, usually you would be able to hit those speeds but still rare.

    • Maybe this is holden93's brother? :)

  • +3

getting speeds 20x faster than my ADSL connection. GG Telstra :/

  • I mainly use for uploading because my Telstra cable connection has a faster downloading speed.

  • +2

This is fantastic for people who don't have FTTP NBN. As others have found, latency is roughly 3-4x normal and speeds are heavily reduced, but this is still a boon for people needing to move data.

Copie, you do realise spectrum is finite?

This is why we do not have unlimited 4G. It is NOT workable.

    • 26ms ping 22mbit down and thats via wifi tethering to a MF90 with one bar of 4g

Telstra is doing fine in Sydney CBD

  • +2

Its so annoying seeing people get more than 10MB/s…while im sitting here barely getting 10 mbps….

    • +4

      im stuck on a 3mbit 5km line
today is a blessing for me

      be happy with 10mbps

  • +1

Can also confirm that un-activated Telstra SIM cards are working with the free internet too.
Cheap $2 unlimited internet for the day!

Get one from the supermarket, put it in the phone, and off you go. Nothing else needed.

  • +1

    1.16Mbps down, 6.62Mbps up. 111ms ping. Telstra 4G.

Thank god I have so much quota on my home connection that I can't even use it all, so this offer wasn't much use to me anyway.

Obviously there's a few people hammering it!

  • +4

3.35Mbps down, 0.29 up on Telstra 3G here. Appears to be working fine.

If you need something soothing to watch on Telstra's Network Stress Test Day, I suggest some 9 hour train trips in HD through Norway.

  • +5

You can think this way Telstra also getting people test their mobile network and see if it's good enough to withstand that much more bandwidth. Also people can test drive 4G speeds without paying which means they would get good PR and good image after the outage.

Certainly faster than typical ADSL, faster upload than Cable. So for anyone without NBN great deal.

    • -8

Bad PR with a mere 2.13mbps download on 4G. What a joke.

  • +2

RIP 4G @ Caloundra, Sunshine Coast

    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5084502167

    • +1

Turns out the hotspot radius on my phone is only about 1-2m. Now at 6MB/s :D

  • +1

150-180Mbps down and 35 down on 4G+ in Brisbane CBD. Compared to 260Mbps down in offpeak periods.
