    Portable airconditioners are crap.
By design they have to suck in hot air from outside.

All air conditioners do. These can be moved from room to room or home to home if renting.

or from home to doghouse if you annoy the wife

    • unless you buy one that does heat exchange like wall mounted aircons.

the only portable aircons I have used have large air hose/duct tubes that allow the (used) hot air to be expelled outside and NOT into the room that is being cooled

otherwise they are as efficient room coolers as just leaving the fridge door open!

the more expensive models have two hoses that suck in hot air and blow out hot air from outside but blow out cold air inside, they avoid creating negative pressure in the house so hot air doesn't get sucked in under doors and window cracks etc.

    • storyteller knows what I'm talking about. All the portables I've seen blow hot air out, creating negative pressure in the room and sucking hot air into the room. Split systems and mounted systems do not have this problem. As storyteller said, good ones have two hoses, one to suck from outside the other to blow outside.

These Polocools work really well for occasional aircon use.
This brand actually have decent compressors and enough power to really cool decent sized spaces.
Of course they are not as efficient as wall mounted inverters, but they do actually work. A lot of the cheaper ones dont have enough cooling power to do much. These do.

  • 6KW, I am guessing it will be noisy.

  • My upstairs neighbour has a window box air con sitting on his balcony at the sliding door with a heavy curtain draping down over it creating a seal (of some sort) People will do anything to escape the heat and humidity in the Tropical North. Don't know how effective it is. I have split system all-round so I'm a bit embarrassed to ask.
