  • I'm still confused which one is better This or Samsung Evo 850 series ?

    Can someone pls help.

    • +9

      samsung

      • -1

        not for ubuntu. :\

    • +8

From what I read when someone asks the same question wherever there an ssd deal, is that the Samsung is better but you will not notice any difference in real world use.

      • Samsung has faster write speeds than this cheapo drive. You will if you transfer >1 GB files

      • I've used both as a boot drive and booting from the Samsung 850 EVO is noticeably faster. I use a Sandisk as a second drive, obviously still much faster than a physical drive for Steam game installs etc.

    • based on micro sd deals, i think people are more crazy about samsung brand nowadays

    • The Samsung EVO is better.

    • +1

I have used Evo 840 and Sandisk Ultra plus and I could see the difference in speed in my Laptop. Sandisk was slower and did not come with any closing software. So a pain to search for free ones. Worth the extra money for Samsung you pay for speed, magician optimisation software and free cloning software.
I will definitely go for Samsung ones in the future.

      • Thanks mate

      • +5

So a pain to search for free ones

        http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/index.htm

Forth result on Google. Works well.

        • -1

Not worth the pain in my opinion. You will get 1000 of results in google and dont know how much spam they load to your PC. Not that user friendly and might have to scratch your head if the size of the HDD you are replacing is more than the SSD. Thats the software I used with my Sandisk as well and it kept popping up with ads. I expected the software with the SSD. Samsung Software is included and is quite easy.

But I never said that is the only reason. Speed between the two were quite noticeable. Its your money and your decision.

        • +1

@Gaggy: I've used both SSD Magician as well as Easues, both effectively work the same as each other. Not like either of them are complicated at all. Can't say I ever noticed any ads in Easeus, but there you go.

Paying extra for a glorified piece of software where there's free alternatives that are just as good, is a bit stupid.

I'd spend the extra $9 on the Ultra II instead, you won't notice any difference in day to day usage between the Evo and the Ultra II outside of benchmarks for the people who enjoy that sort of stuff.

        • +6

Macrium Reflect Free has served me well on 3 SSD so far. And it is free.

        • @Porthos: Good luck, if you want to feel good about it. Not sure why you keep insisting on free software when it is one of the reason, but not the only reason I said.
It is the speed which is why go for a SSD. BTW, I was using Sandisk Ultra II as well.

        • +4

@uminan: +1 Macrium Reflect is awesome and easy.

        • +2

          @uminan:

          Macrium Reflect FTW

        • @Porthos: where can you get the ultra II for $9 more??

        • +1

          @homersyd:

You're not able to search eBay? :-P

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SanDisk-Ultra-II-240GB-550MB-s-La…

Use the CRUSHONYOU code for 10% off. Sorry, it's actually $9.90 more :-P

        • -2

          @Gaggy:

i know it's one of the reasons, I'm telling you though why it's a silly reason to choose a certain SSD :-)

If you can notice the actual real world difference between the Evo and the Ultra II outside of benchmarks, you must be in that 'special' 0.5%..

        • @Porthos: Again, it is a decent reason, but you can ignore it.
I have actually used the Sandisk SSD which is my drawer now. Had noticeable delay in booting the Laptop, Writes were a bit slower as well. In all the performance was not that smooth as I was expecting.
With Evo, bootup time was 5 seconds. With Sandisk it was 20-25 seconds. With my HDD, it was over 2 minutes. I wanted faster booting. I think Samsung Magician software does some tweaks as well to run or boot PC faster.
You wont notice the difference, if you don't use it. If will buy Samsung any day over Sandisk Ultra II and pay $20 extra.
SSD in this deal is not even Ultra II.

        • +2

          @Porthos:
Many people are saying they can notice the difference so this does confirm what the scores say. Evo is the best while ultra II the best value

          Drive Passmark d% score $ $ inc. 10% off d% $ Score/$ Link
          Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB 4077 41% $129.95 $116.96 30% 35 eBay
          SanDisk Ultra II 240GB 3660 27% $110.00 $99.00 10% 37 eBay
          SanDisk SDSSDA240G 2892 0% $100.00 $90.00 0% 32 eBay

Even though this 'deal' has now expired you would have been better off going with the ultra 2. Now the ultra 2 is the same price anyway!

        • -2

          @Gaggy:
Ok I admit, you're totally right. My own Ultra II takes 10 minutes to boot up in my HTPC, I've just been living in denial. Oh god, what will I do?! I'll go and get an Evo 850 as soon as I can, or else I'll steal it out of my work PC.. Thank you for showing me the light.

Do you also think I should be like you and buy a Monster power cable for $200? You know, for that real world difference that everyone can easily tell?

        • @Porthos: Now you are changing the topic for no reason. I never buy a Monster power, neither I said so.
Live in your dream-world and pamper yourself to have done great. what I say is a fact which I have tested. You have no grounds.
Secondly, free software comes with a price of spyware. All this discussion for $20 difference? I will stop writing now.

        • -2

          @Gaggy:

Now you are changing the topic for no reason. I never buy a Monster power, neither I said so.

No actually, I'm making a mockery of you believing there's a real world difference between them, let alone a 20 second difference in boot times. Try to keep up ok?

Live in your dream-world and pamper yourself to have done great. what I say is a fact which I have tested. You have no grounds.

Hahaha yes that's totally what I'm doing, well done. This from the guy who claims there's such a massive real world difference between the two based on one measurement of boot times. Yet I own both the Evo 850 (work PC) and the Ultra II in my HTPC, to which there is no perceivable difference in boot times, yet you're claiming in Ultra II is 4-5 times slower in booting up. Wow…

Secondly, free software comes with a price of spyware. All this discussion for $20 difference? I will stop writing now.

Yep, all that big bad spyware from all those free programs, if you buy a program it'll never ever spy on you now will it? Checked out Windows 10 at all? Seen the issue Lenovo had with installing malware? Ever actually read an EULA before?

Yes, please stop writing now. Thanks :-)

        • @Porthos: Let us know how your OCZ goes

        • @brenwildman:

Considering I'm comparing the Evo 850 and the Ultra II, that's a swing and a miss there from you, but nice try.

Both the Ultra II and the Evo 850 are extremely fast and capable SSD's, the real world performance between them isn't really distinguishable at all. Comparing a Kingston V300 to either of those 2 though, there will be an obvious real world difference.

But please, show me some real evidence that the Evo 850 is 4-5 times faster in booting up than the Ultra II as claimed by Gaggy.

      • +1

I used the samsung clone software last year, twas a complete piece of shit. Ended up using an Acronis product to get the job done. In hindsight should have just done a fresh install and P2V'd the old HD

    • samsung is

    • I say depends on the purpose. For my old Asus n61jq 2010 laptop this is good enough. The Samsung is like $119 I would save that $20. However if your gear can take full advantage of its speed then go for Samsung which isn't available at $119 atm no more %20 off

  • Thanks TA. Love you.

    • +2

Me too, except for some reason ozbargain has "detected" that I'm related to ta or this shop. I voted anyway. I have this ssd and its fine for server use, I put it in my g6 proliant and it rips.

      • That's just a warning, all good to ignore it. It just means you may have an IP address match or similar, now or in the past, with someone associated with the store or the OP. In this case it gives a warning that if you are in fact associated, that you can't vote on the deal.

        Thanks

    • -3

Hey man back off, TA is a chick. That's sexual harassment right there.

      • Rumours saying jv is a chick, now TA?

        • No but it's true!

          Well that's the rumour…

  • Hi OP, could you pls sugfest if these come with Windows copy spftware or something. I'm sorry I'm noob when it comes to SSDs

    • No they don't you'll have to install it yourself

      • Thanks

  • That's tight

  • Thanks TA, had you negotiated this deal with eBay the code would have been "CrushOnArse'. :)

  • +1

Damn! Just bought a Samsung this morning. With this price difference, I could have gone Sandisk!! Thanks anyway TA.

  • Thanks TA :)

  • hmmm $57 on ebay for 120GB model, wondering which one i should buy…. how big is windows 10 operating system (incl latest updates)?

    • +3

But for family photos need either external USB drive or second traditional hd to store them.

        • +1

Yes for photos need a lot more.

Some of my internals hdd are getting full so will upgrade them soon.

      • thanks. 120gb it is.

        • Bigger is better. The data does creep up on you.

        • @eisniwre: do you have the link for the 120GB one? I'm looking for one too

        • +1

@blahoz: hey just put the keyword on eBay and sort cheapest, Australia seller only.

        • -2

          @eisniwre:

I've typed in "SanDisk SSD 120gb", sorted, and was not able to find anyting for $57. Also tried a few other keywords, with no success. Best I could find was $68.

You could just post the link, but if you insist on making us jump through hoops, then please give us the exact keywords to search for, and the eBay's seller's name. Thanks a lot.

          @NightElfHunter:
Gee man relax I was at work so tried to save time but here.
          http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=281903815277&al…

$57 is after eBay discount of course. :)

        • +1

@eisniwre: The 10% discount(CRUSHONYOU) is for "when you spend $100 or more". Also, that seller is in New Zealand. Thanks for sharing.

        • @NightElfHunter: sincerely apologies….

        • @NightElfHunter: It says Auckland, Australia. It came up for me!

    • +10

I wonder if anyone would be interested if I can arrange 2x 120GB for around $100- $110?

      • +2

        $100 sounds great… Shipped?

      • +5

Any chance of getting the 960GBs as close to the Amazon prices a couple months back? That'd be worth a shot.

      • I just need one…

      • +2

Can you get a better brand than Sandisk? The Samsung EVOs are on average ~30% faster on passmark.

      • 2 for $100 shipped would be awesome.

( any one in north bris want to go halves?)

      • I can only imagine the moment you do, you'll have people asking for a Buy 1 for $50-$55 lol

        • +4

Only trying to get 2 for $100ish shipped as it's eBay's min spend for the 10% sale. Will know more in the morning :)

      • yep definitely interested as well!

      • +1

Yeah! 2x 120G would be much more useful than a single 250G!

      • Definitely, I'm in.

      • Any word on whether this is happening?

Otherwise I might have to take the plunge on the 240GBs instead.

        • +2

Nup, sorry. PCB couldn't get enough stock to warrant the price drop for them.

        • @tightarse: Okay. Thanks for trying.

    • +2

      a 120GB drive formats to 111GB usable.

      FYI

  • Does anyone know if its suitable for Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop ? It is about 10 years old.

    • As long as it's S-ATA connector, yes. However, it won't run at top speed because the port speed on your laptop likely won't be current:

      http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8142/~/differe…

Also, your laptop might not support AHCI over IDE:

      http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/Why-do-i-need-AHCI-…

Have a check of the BIOS. Not a deal-breaker, but worth noting.

      G

    • Internet says yes, you would have to swap the hard drive caddy as this drive will be thinner

    • @Germination & @Mikinoz, many thanks for your response. I did Google this info a few months ago, but quickly become a bit confused as to whether the New SATA connection was compatible with a 10 year old laptop.

      • The S-ATA will fit fine & you'll see an improvement over a std. HDD. The only diff is that the SSD can do better on a newer laptop.

That being said, you could just get it & save the old HDD. Then, when you decide to get another laptop, use the SSD in that & put the HDD back into the old one.

Also, re: the caddy/thinness— the SSD will come with a plastic "shim" to make up for the thickness if you need it. I have never needed to use one.

        HTH

        • @Geekomatic, thank you for that info.

  • Any chance on a deal on 128gb/ 200gb microsd cards? Looking for one to leave in a surface.

  • It's not $90! It's listed as $110 ($99 after CRUSHONYOU)

    • I paid $90 you snooze you lose

    • There is a $103.89 one from Hong kong.
      Same MPN: SDSSDA-240G-G25

  • This doesn't come with the 3.5" to mount on desktop, does it?

    • +2

You don't need a mount, these things weigh about 50grams so you can just superglue/duct-tape it anywhere inside the case.
      I respect my computer.

  • guys there's about 45 minutes left. It's back down to $100 ($90 after coupon). Hurry in!
