a receiver will function to its potential if you connect large speakers with it and not just a sound bar. If you plan on buying the receiver might as well buy some bookshelf speakers or self standing one plus an active subwoofer for the whole home theater experiece!

    • Thanks very much for the info. much appreciated!

    • +2

      @garbled
All Soundbars are essentially compromised solutions for cases where you do not want to run extra wiring for external speakers or lack the space for a hefty receiver unit. Their sound quality is limited by what drivers could be fitted in their small enclosure compared to external speakers/subwoofers.

  • Just what I needed! Thanks.

  • Some of these RRP's are uncompetitive, pricing on some items brings back in line with normal audio brands (sale vs sale).

    • +1

Absolutely, hifi gear never sells close to rrp. Some good deals anyway imo

  • I have 5.1 dicksmith speakers sitting around in the garage doing nothing. Paid around $400 back in 2008.
Will XT3 sound better than these cheapo speakers.

Would be awesome if I can hook my sub with XT3

  • Cheers TA. Was waiting for a deal on the Yamaha YAS-203 but at this price the XT3 is too good to pass up. Great find!

  • Damn, shouldn't have purchased the $94 sony soundbar late last year or would have grabbed the XT3.

    • I'm on the same boat.. but have just moved to a studio room where space is very limited, thinking to sell the soundbar now and grab the XT3.

      • +1

Yeah, I prefer how the XT3 sits below the TV too, I always find the sound bar sitting at the front blocks the tv remote signal. But I can't be bothered trying to sell the cheapo one, so will just stick with it.

        • I could not agree more.. this has been my main annoyance with soundbars in general! EDIT: Purchased the XT3!

        • +1

          @badtzmaru56: Enjoy the XT3!

  • Im not great when it comes to this sort of thing but i purchased 5 Jamo in wall speakers about a year ago off ebay and need to run them through a box (this shows how tech savvy i am) in order to connect them to my tv. Any suggestions from this sale?

The speakers have just been sitting in storage for the past 12 months so it would be good to get them out and installed. My current tv is 4k if that helps.

    • Five in-wall speakers?

Are you planning to have a center, left, right, and rear-left, rear-right? installed in your gyprock sheeting?

I guess you are asking if you need a reciever? The $399 one is out of stock but the STR-ZA2000ES would be good.

  • +6

Just a heads up for those considering the receivers… The STRDN850 definitely does not support hdcp 2.2 which means it won't be able to play copy protected 4k material (4k bluray, netflix?) so may not be a good option for some. Not sure about the other receiver.

    • Thanks. If I'm spending money on a receiver now it needs to be 2.2 … probably atmos as well I'd think.

      • The STR-ZA2000ES supports 2.2.

  • +1

Damn nice equipment. Wish I had a need for one :(

  • Need a receiver to replace my faulty Yamaha 1900v.
Is the ZA2000es comparable and a good price? .HDR firmware update? Hard to search as overseas and mobile internet is crap.

  • Does anybody know the exchange policy if I purchase one of these products and decide I don't like it?

I'd looked on the website but it seemed refunds and exchanges were only for faulty products.

  • I'm still waiting my Onkyo NR609 to be fixed (HDMI board replaced). Should I get the DN850?

  • +2

Great stuff. All too expensive for me. I was hoping to spend my $25 voucher that I did no get to spend in the last damaged box sale.

    • You are not alone. Can't afford to spend even $200 on these things.

  • +1

just bought HT-XT3, damn didn't think will spend $400 today

    • me too@ but i spend $374 after 25$ code lol

      • +1

        Lucky. U got code.
2 weeks after headphones deal, still waiting

      • I fill up the survey but alas it would come in 2 weeks…
        Although I used cashrewards :-)

        • If you are not an angel you can use that $30 code hack instead haha

  • If I could get some advice from anyone that may know, I have a Sony 55 inch 4k with the magnetic fluid speakers on the sides. Would the HT-XT3 be a vast improvement on this? Can I use the tv speakers in tandem with the HT-XT3?

    • Deleted. Misread your post.

  • I currently have a Yamaha HTR-6065 / RVX673: http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-a…

The specs rate the Dynamic Power per Channel (8/6/4/2 ohms) as 130/170/200/240W.

Does this mean that my amp is more powerful that either the Sony STR-DN850 or STR-ZA2000ES?

  • Thanks TA. Anyone know if we can use Paypal?

    • +1

      Nope, Bpay or C/C.

      • +1

        Thanks.

  • Just to clarify, can anyone confirm if this 850 can play the rear/surround back as a zone 2?

Ie: I have 5.1 inside my theatre room, but the extra 2 speakers are connected outside to my alfresco area. (On my Onkyo I've set the 2 outside speakers to Zone 2 as this has a specific button on my amp for this purpose). -> Note I can't play 2 different sources at the same time. This doesn't bother me, but it's nice to just have music outside and nothing playing inside when it's setup for entertaining, etc..

From what I'm reading, the 850 can't do this.. (Only the 1050)..

    • That's correct. This amp is single zone only.

      • Cheers OzBlackKnight.
        Think I'll skip this then..

Still surprises me that so many "new" amps today don't do 7.1 at a reasonable price, let alone zone 2.. My 8 year old Onkyo does though.

  • +2

anyone know if the $30 code hack still works?

    • +2

      confirming it works
one of the suggestions was to change the last 4 digits. took a few attempts, but I used this: MS14016301

      • I just tried your code but I got this: Ecoupon entered is not valid for this customer type.

or do you have to be a mysony member and logged in..?

        • +1

did you login? one of the comments on your linked post mentions you need to login (i.e. register a product on mysony) before applying the coupon. try that

        • +2

          @justin_tsoi:

Thanks for that, I got it working after logging in!

Pulled the trigger on the XT3 soundbar..

    • bugger, I don't have any sony product with me at work.

  • +1

Guys…I have a $25 coupon that am not using (I wanted it for headphones too).

Anyone want it, happy to share via PM.

  • How do we know how much the damage is?!

    • It's only box damage…

    • +2

I don't think I heard of one person in the last "damaged box" sale from Sony (headphones) actually receiving a damaged box, let alone item. My box was perfect. Apparently they say 'damaged box' because they have an agreement with retailers that they won't sell items below x price and this is their way of getting around it when they need to clear stock. Something like that anyway

  • +1

thanks OP. no idea why I bought the 850. stupid bandwagon grr…
    :)

  • Can i use the 7.2 receiver for like 2.1 mode? I've only got a smallish room and the setup really needs 2.1
    Or is this stupid?
Also what's the benefits of a receiver? Currently just running all my devices straight into the TV with optical out to my old sound system.

    • you can use in 2, 5 or 7

  • +3

Seems like a good sale, but I've never thought of Sony as being great at sound, on their TV's, car sound or home theater, if your spending this kind of money wouldn't you buy klipsch or Polk etc?

    • +1

If you're talking speakers yes, electronics they are pretty good. No high end valve amp, but very good.

  • +3

STR-ZA2000ES - Seems to be a bit old yet still pricey without any of the newer features / multi room / atmos / wifi spotify etc.

  • +2

Those are very expensive boxes! SMH

  • Looking at the HT-XT1 for a cheep sound upgrade for my parents TV. Currently using TV speakers. I always find them turning the sound down on loud audio and up on quiet auido. Would this be a better solution for them and how much better would this sound compared to the standard inbuilt TV speakers?

Also do these sound plates support direct input codes? Rather than just input next? As I plan to use run this with a Logitech Harmony remote and have never been successful with input next. But setting up this remote has always given direct input codes.

  • Anyone know if the STR-DN850 has digital radio, the specs just say TUNER - Preset Channel (FM/AM). Nothing in regards to Digital or DAB?

  • Thanks op, just bought the STR-ZA2000ES. I've been in the market for a new receiver for a while now.

  • I wished their USB DACs were on sale

  • What is the warranty on the DN850 ?

  • +2

    any bargain below $100? :D

    • yeah like that bluray wifi player last time

  • Thanks TA.Bought a receiver and the mini hifi.

  • +3

How can I hide this post? Every time I see this I imagine myself spending $800 bucks on an AVR and in return become subjected to 1600 taunts delivered in Hi res audio (Dolby atmos or better).

  • +1

    hmm… my DN850 is in backorder…GG

    • Also got that

    • Guessing I wont be getting it. Unless they damage a few more boxes.

      • Ends 28 Feb, 2016 or while stocks last. Some products may have box damage. All products have a full Sony warranty.

Looks like back orders may not be honoured.

        • Why would you say that they would be honoured. I guess if they want to clear stock, they could honour it, if not, gone when its gone. Waiting game I guess.

        • +1

@ricodbn: They may honour them, but I'm sure I've read in some previous deals that some orders have been cancelled when they have not had sufficient stock. Once you receive your tax invoice you will know your order is on it's way.

        • @unity1: Will wait it out. Not sure how long that should take though. They could be holding my money indefinitely.

        • @ricodbn: It would be worth the wait. Great specs for the price.

  • Thanks TA… Bought a STR-DN850… Received the tracking receipt from CR as well for $26.38

    • Damn man you're lucky, you comment 57min ago and I check now and they are out of stock :(

Someone 15min before me commented out of stock also. You got a ripper of a deal.

      • backorder? or not worth waiting?

      • Actually commented 30 mins after ordering :)

  • Some good deals! Can the DN850 connect to wireless speakers? Seems to only mention bluetooth music streaming? I have a wired 5.1 setup id really like to replace with 7.1 but like to cut the wires eventually. Can anyone shed some light?

  • For anyone interested, Eastwood Hifi generally have decent deals on too.

$30 voucher hack still works, just change the last 4 digits (MS1401XXXX) to anything and make sure you sign in to MySony + Cashrewards!

    • +8

A negative vote for helping people save more money? This is interesting.. haha.

      • +6

It's basically stealing from people who legitimately received the vouchers from Sony.

      • +3

The codes actually belong to people who purchased qualifying products from Sony. They don't belong to you. How you you feel if someone used your credit card number to make a purchase? I'm sure you'd be the first person screaming at the bank asking for a dispute. Unfortunately these people have no such resolution process if someone has used their code and used it up.

        • +2

Your credit card analogy is a bit off because you're assuming that everyone who receives the voucher intends to take advantage of it. I think I would feel a little different if a voucher simply did not work for me (would probably just not buy the product then?) vs. actual money being stolen from my account.

Realistically, it's already been disclosed by another Ozbargainer (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/224828#comment-3287104) and even endorsed by the OP in that thread. I don't think saying "Hey stop telling everyone because someone else MIGHT need that code one day" will have much impact. The utility of everyone here knowing would far outweigh just having a few select individuals repeatedly save the trick for themselves and benefit individually - since once again, it's already public knowledge.

        • +3

@badtzmaru56: agree. Please dont play angel pure heart.

        • +1

@badtzmaru56: @badtzmaru56: Many know about this but not everybody. Those that know about this will keep doing it, but why keep spreading it? If it's yours and you want to share it fine, but it's different when it belongs to someone else.

I have purchased 3 or 4 cameras that have come with the Sony ecoupon, and I'm sure my codes have been guessed and used by some or many. But why should someone be able to use something I have paid for without my permission? I get no benefit if someone uses my codes. I am losing my benefits.

OK credit card analogy is not the best example. But at the end of the day you are gaining a financial advantage at someone else's expense, and possibly my expense if you have used one of my vouchers.

The best I could hope for is to contain the damage rather than continuing to spread it. Sometimes people just need to think how they would feel if the shoe was on the other foot.

        • +1

@unity1: I'm happy to acknowledge that people need to be considerate when using these codes, but at the same time I also know we don't live in a world where everyone is nice to each other all the time and we shouldn't be naive to believe that such a world could exist either.

Perhaps as a compromise, I will add a disclaimer for those wishing to use the codes at their own discretion. It's really all you can do at this stage.

EDIT: Just realised I can't edit my old comment.. but I'm sure people will read these comments too!

        • +2

thanks for pointing this out, didn't realise they were given to people after making qualifying purchases, thought they were randomised codes (I probably should've read the original post on the $30 off code, before using it today)

having said that, you would expect sony to have better protection around their code (changing the last 4 digits.. really?)
plus ensuring the code used matches the mysony username…

        • +1

@justin_tsoi: Yep, Sony were pretty slack with these codes.

        • @badtzmaru56: Wouldn't using the voucher not given to you be committing fraud?

Realise coupon fraud is more common in the US and very very small chance that Sony would prosecute in Australia (more likely just ask for the $30 back), but is it worth it?

    tightarse famous on the web

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/02/lunch-time-deals-65-per-ce…

"Courtesy of the consistently great gadget price snooping of ‘tightarse’ on OzBargain, Sony’s online store has some great prices on a whole range of hi-fi gear with damaged boxes. The 7.2-channel, 4K-compatible STR-ZA2000ES amp, for example, is down to $799 from $1799; the beautiful SS-HA1 speakers are $509 down from $1199."

    • Well deserved TA!

  • STR-DN850 out of stock

  • Not sure whether to go for the STR-DN1060 from the JB Sale, or go the STR-ZA2000ES from here. #FirstWorldProblem

    • same question here.

      • The built-in AirPlay and Bluetooth will probably get the JB from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/234386 offer across the line…
Given I previously had the Pioneer VSX-1020-K, I had looked at the VSX-1130-K which doesn't seem to be in Australia as yet, and pics from the US seem to indicate that it doesn't have removable AC cable, which probably means it's not universal voltage, and thus I'd need to find a power transformer as well.

  • Can anyone confirm that only HT-XT3 support Google Cast (thus Google Music) and HT-XT1 not support it?

    Thanks!
