    Would the STRDN850 be any good hooked up to a PC?
    I know you can get dedicated DAC for desktops but at this price this might be a better alternative.

        I was thinking of that too…I could upgrade my pioneer one which is almost 3-4 years old and use that. The pioneer at the time was one of the top end models and might be overkill and a waste for a desktop.

        Yeah, I was wondering what they would do when stock runs out, so I guess that answers the question - they just put the price back up to RRP.

        I have purchased "backorder" items in the past, and in most cases you might have to wait, but you will eventually get the item :-)
        (In two instances where the items were no longer in existence, they substituted one item with something very similar, and refunded for the other)

    What do people think of the RRPs? They seem exorbitantly high for Sony products. Like that sub woofer or even the Receivers and speakers… I would never pay even 70% of those prices for those products. Even at the discounted price that subwoofer and some of those speakers dont seem worth it.

      Based on what, just looking at the RRP? The subwoofer is part of a series of speakers that won the Australia speaker of the year 2014 award <$10k. You're basically staring at a future classic.

          Lol go check with anyone? Like who, you? Every audio show in the world (including in Sydney) I've been to have positive opinions of the series and including the subwoofer. So yeah I'll stick with 'some magazines' opinion over you 'expert' opinion.

          hahaha, yeah magazines that are brainwashing people, magazines that are paid adverts. Back in the day AV magazines actually did proper reviews. That for the most part changed and generally became paid adverts, same for quite a few of the online sites. Did i say me, i said check with anyone but sorry my 20 yrs in the industry as well as overall spending more than hundreds of thousands on acquiring different AV items for upgrades or just testing and comparing, I know of quite a few subs that will totally blow it out of the water even at the discounted price much less the 4000$ price mark. Obviously i can see how you decide what is good and what is not. fanbois anyone. Thats all i see from all your comments so far. And I never said they were a crap product, I was asking about the RRP as that is extremely high for what these products provide. If you dont want to do comparisons, even at a base level the stats are pretty low for a 4000$ price mark. 2x 10" drivers with a 500 watt amp…..The finish seems decent and the ability to switch between a passive radiator and an active driver is pretty cool, but for 4000$?

          I personally prefer to do direct in room comparisons or if not possible some level of comparison or at least go with informed individuals who have made the comparisons and have tested out a lot of the products with a lot of experience in the market who have NO MONETARY INCENTIVE to give a biased point of view unlike a lot of Mags and online sites these days.

      Yes very good speakers, get HW1 if you prefer Jazz, HA1 for bit more bass heavy. Need to make sure your amp is adequate as these are very transparent sounding and are not afraid to be blunt about the amp you are using.

          Oh you were intending them to be home cinema add-ins, nah wouldn't recommend them. Tuned for music, the dispersion of these are much more narrow for that exact reasons. Also these are 4 ohm rated speakers, make sure you're matching with your existing set or are willing to mix.

          The SS-AC5 is more of what should be looking at.

          Ah oks…..they are double the price!!! could you use the ssha1s as rear speakers? with the ss-ac5 as fronts? not prepared to pay $1200 for that front they are listing though.

          You can use them how you like, I'm just stating my opinion on best scenario. They are nice speakers for the $400-500 price, HA1 is a good chunk of full aluminium that very few brands will match at that budget. But consider that it's a bit wasteful to use as just satellite speakers and you will be mixing 4ohm speakers (HA1) with the 6ohm speakers (AC5), it will work but make sure your amp likes mixing up speakers and doesn't overheat too much.

          If it was me, I'd go for the stereo AC3 towers (for now if that's all you can afford and add satellites later), the tweeter array is the bees knees.

      Agree that the STRDN850 was a better value (its original price was more than half the STRDA2000ES, but the discounted price it came down to half). However, good luck getting those high end pieces at lower cost.

    Anyone know how the HT-XT3 compares to the Bose Solo 15 Series 2? Bought the Bose last week in the Myer sale for $380 but wondering if the Sony performs better?

      Got both. The HT-XT3 has more features, but for convenience I prefer the Bose Solo. Both is 1000x better than what the TV will produce. The STRZA2000ES AVR at $799 is acceptable, but I don't think it's a great price when comparing to competitors. For around $1050 ($251 extra), you can pickup the new Denon AVR-X2200W which has all the features of the Sony, but has 150w, not 100w, Atmos, DTS:X, Spotify, Apple Airplay, Bluetooth and Audyssey calibration, which is miles ahead of the Sony. Head over to AV forums and you'll see all the rave about it. I can understand Sony not implementing any of these features because they have their own music service and they don't want to pay licensing fees for Atmos, DTS:X, Apple, Audyssey, etc, but it just lets the unit down imo. Still, if you're just looking to watch movies without the latest sound processing or play high-def music this one does the job. The highlight of this unit is dual HDMI out with HDCP 2.2 support, which the Denon also supports. It is semi-future proof, probably good for another 2-3 years before Atmos become the standard, and if anyone has heard movie encoded with Atmos, it is pretty incredible. If you watched movies like the latest Transformer or Mad Max, these movies had Atmos sound processing.

    The STRDN850 page now redirects to an 'Archived' page which indicates the model is discontinued.

    So our 'damaged box' stock may or may not be available for backorder. I wonder if Sony will get around this by offering the model up, the STRDN860, for those on Backorder?

      this is the story:
      TA went to sony to negotiate cashreward %. while walking on the warehouse he saw lots of damaged boxes. he asked if the items are still fine, the manager said yes, then TA had idea to do damaged box sales for ozb, and at the same time sealed the deal with sony.

    sorry, clueless here with home hifi, but with the HT-XT1 having 3 hdmi,
    does that mean i can plug say blueray, xbox, chromecast etc directly into the soundbar/base (as my tv has run outta hdmi ports) ?

      if those are hdmi inputs then most likely yes, you can just plug those into the soundbar. Then there should be a HDMI output from the soundbar to the TV (so all the video/audio from those 3 devices can be seen on the TV).

        Mine was delivered this morning. I will pick it up when I get to work. Order was picked up from Sydney ~4pm yesterday and then delivered to Melbourne this morning ~ 10am.

        It will be interesting to see just how damaged the box is.
