does v power still contain ethanol, if so NO DEAL!

  • +5

v power never had ethanol! big ++ for me

    • -1

yeah i know it did, but I think they may have changed it.

not sure if i'd risk it again.

ive noticed power losses when i've tried it.

its been known to foul your plugs. specially on the bike.

according to the shell site, its best to have your plugs and jets changed, and seems to work better with Fuel injection on bikes.

      • V-Power has never had ethanol. The one with ethanol was a special V-Power which had a different name and a higher octane.

        • +1

V-Power Racing which contained 5% ethanol to boost V-Power's octane rating to 100 RON has now been phased out by Shell due to a "changing market".

I think this is the one

  • The basic V-power was never advertised to contain ethanol.
That was only ever the 100RON "racing" version with 5% - and anything branded "racing" should scream avoid…

I mainly use Caltex as I get a nice discount :-)

The problem is that Sunday isn't the cheapest day in the cycle, so you're probably gonna still come out a few cents behind, over paying with a 4c/l voucher on Wednesday.
The pump price drop from Sunday to Wednesday equals about 8c from my observations.

    • thur-wed = 14ish cents so..ur prob coming out even…but it is 9c more expensive than Regular unleaded i think BUT it is a better fuel than reg unleaded, and u can also take ur 4c docket in too, AND the 2c if u buy like $2 in store, so u CAN get 16c off if you want.

      • 13c more than regular last time i checked

        • RON/V-Power98 is + 13c
RON/V-Power95 is + 9c (but is rare and getting rarer at Shell/Coles stations now)

    • Yeah, only really useful for people who need to fill up..

  • -1

Awesome! Will wait for Sunday to fuel up now.

    • Should have just filled up in the morning or yesterday when the fuel price cycle is at its lowest.

      • I went to fill up on the way home today, shell 95 was $1.36 here in brisbane. I decided to wait as it probably wouldn't go much higher than that!

    • -3

      That's just funny..

  • Pretty good deal considering it can be used with a 4 cent grocery docket. Although it does not mention anything about the extra 4 cent vouchers that you get when you use a Coles Source Master card statement (that you can combine with the 4 cent grocery).

If it did that would be great 18 cents a litre off!

  • I will be in Melb for the F1. Car will be at home.. can't fill up.. =( still a plus thou only if they don't jack up the price to compensate for the 1-cent discount

  • +2

My guess they probably jack up the fuel prices a few cents over the normal Sunday prices….

    • yep was going to say exactly that, its grand prix weekend you dont think fuel will be at an all time high? and as per normal the fuel watchdog will be fast asleep!

  • +5

Petrol is always 10c cheaper on a Tuesday/Wednesday than on a Sunday, so how's this a deal?
Just fill up on a Tuesday or Wednesday……..unless you run out on that particular Sunday.

    • additionally, you have to Print the voucher it will cost you money!

    • If you need to fill up on Sunday, then it's a great deal!
otherwise it's like saying to every deal here… why pay $70 for a logitech security camera when it'll be $55 in 5 months? It's a good deal if you buy "now".

      • your comparing the logic of a few days to 5 months…..and something that depreciates to something thats cyclical, furthermore…..this might be just me but i dont get logitech cameras every week.

        • +1

Taking my example at face value, you're right. But you should look at it from a less specific point of view.

Why pay $x for product y when it'll be cheaper z days later? Because a person might need product Y today, and not next Thursday.

For those people, it's a great deal.

Product Y can be anything - petrol, cameras, batteries, etc.

There will no doubt be people coming back from weekend drives who would not have enough petrol to last till wed/thursday. Just because i don't need to fill up today doesn't make it a bad deal.

  • +1

Hope they dont just up the price for Sunday! Am keen though…

  • Not really a bargain, prices are nearly 10c more on Sundays Compared to Tuesday-Wednesday and will probably be even higher due to the promotion.

  • +1

14 cents off.. snotbad, now I'm guessing they will just put the prices up that much on Sunday to balance everything out.

  • it is 98 RON or 95 RON in QLD?

  • Is this like the normal unleaded or a premium one or what?

    • V power is Premium - 98RON

  • Chuckle, that's why I like this site, watching you people dismantle the bargains that are not really.

Out of curiosity, they say the page will be shut down when 200,000 views have been reached. How does that help them? People can still forward PDF copies of the page to others.

  • i wonder why they want you to fill up on sunday?

    • It's to "celebrate" the F1 in Melb

They had this last year too. DH is an F1 fanatic and we both filled up our cars early in the morning, and the price wasn't too bad.

  • Great marketing tool because Sunday people tend zzz at home and cbs going out so the petrol browser will be more empty…not a user of ethanol or vpower, ill just keep my car at regular unleaded ^^

  • +11

    LOL

Deal? Petrol is at least 10c/litre more on Sundays. What exactly are you saving? if you want V-power, fill up on Wednesday. It will actually be cheaper.

    • i agree, fuel on sunday is atleast 6-8c more expensive then on the wednesday. so the deal really alows u to buy vpower fuel for the wednesdays price.

      • +1

You can do the 4c + 2c thing on this, pushing it up to 16c off / litre.

    • AGREED!

Around my place, the price drop from Sat/Sun to Mon/Tue is around 12-15 cents. Last week I had the price drop from 135.9 on Sunday to 122.9 on Monday.

      • It was 137 here and today can get it for 120 (after 4 cents off staff discount…)

        ridiculous

    • Yep - if you think they're not going to find a way to add 10c for the day, you're dreaming.

    • I do agree with you, but I also think if you use this fuel, get it with the voucher so their promotion is successful and it will encourage shell & their competitors to repeat deals like this.

      • I like this positive attitude haha

    • That's right :(

  • Better than nothing even though it's a tad tricky as uthmani pointed out

  • -1

just a fact that most petrol stations are cheap on tuesday and wednesday morning is becouse they're trying to get rid of the old fuel and replacing it with new ones on wednesday arvo. Old fuel = less octane rating compared to new fuel (if your picky about what fuel goes into your car i suppose).

so yea, this offer isn't so bad after all.

    • +1

What you say is true…..if today was 1970….

The fuel cycle back then was due to what you described, as fuel was delivered mid-week. However, this day and age fuel is delivered all week and the price cycle doesn't have anything to do with 'old fuel'. It simply a marketing strategy and dictated by the price leaders.

    • Petrol companies specify the shelf life of fuel to be between 3 and 6 months, depending on whether you ask BP, Shell, Caltex or Mobil. A few days difference in the age of fuel will result in virtually unmeasurable differences in octane level.

Your car will never notice the difference, but your wallet certainly will.

    • But you also don't want to go to a petrol station that has just been refilled as the all sediments from the bottom of the tanks get disturbed and end up in your fuel.

      • +3

good thing petrol pumps have particulate filters in them, then.

    • +2

      Citation Required.

  • so far this 10c is a good deal. indeed very good deal.
BUT we will see the price on sunday, the price could be lifted during Sunday!!! so its gonna be NO DEAL…

so i will vote when i fill up on sunday

    cya

    • +1

Agreed. Right now where I live I can get petrol for 1.20 this week (add 9 cents for vpower tihngy) (the cheapest I found today, not sure if it will get cheaper). If on sunday its not cheaper then this, then crap and I will -ve!!! :p

  • Any damage to the cars if switching between different type of fuels?

    • Nope

      • My regular unleaded tank is not empty can I top up with this V-Power or have to empty the tank?

        • +2

You can mix normal unleaded and premium, unleaded and E10, etc etc. Cars only specify the minimum octane rating required to prevent detonation. The vast majority of cars on Australia's roads need 91 octane, with a few requiring 95 (mostly European imports) and a tiny minority 98.

Unless your 91 octane sipping car automatically advances the spark timing or changes the compression ratio of the cylinders you will notice no difference in driving on V-Power. Only marketing and the placebo effect make people believe there's a real difference.

    • +1

unless u switch from unleaded to disel and vice versa

  • whats the chaeapest day now ? im confused….

  • +5

People voting negative just because they live in an area where the petrol price wildly fluctuates… Not everyone is in your position, my local petrol stations sit almost the same, maybe fluctuate by 4c if that. So it's a good deal for me.

  • well a few petrol station has confirmed that fuel does get topped up once a week depending if its a quite or busy week.. they usually top it up at around wednesday afternoon and thursday.

yes, cheapest fuel to buy is on tuesday and some parts till wednesday mid-day (metro area that i know of).

no theres no damage in mixing fuels (as in 98 ron, shell, bp, mobile)

yesterday i purchased a v-power fuel for $1.329 after 4c off docket, if this sunday is cheaper after the 10c off, then thats good enough.

    • Chicken or egg?

If tues/wed is the cheapest, everyone will pump then, and the station will obviously run low on petrol, so they'll need to top up on wed afternoon or thursday.

Do oil companies only deliver midweek, or can the station order more any day of the week?

Petrol prices are dictated by the oil companies anyway, the franchise holders have really thin margins so can't afford to play with price a lot.

  • +1

Someone needs to explain to me when oil was $150 barrel paying close to $1.40 - $1.50 in metro now its more than half that yet paying close to same price $1.20 - $1.35 shouldnt it be around $1 or under?

    • Simple, it's called profiteering.

    • Sure there are some profiteering here around, but it won't be under $1. Oil is not the only cost input for petrol. I think $1.1 would be very reasonable…

    • No, the aussie Doller back then was around .6USD - .7USD.

Right now the Aussie doller is .91USD or something.

However, the goverment / Oil companies are making lots of money from this. Guess its our own fault for being dependent on oil =]

I say we are lucky when compared to england, who are paying 1.30 Pounds (2.50 ish$ AUD)/ Litre.

What can we do thou =[

Check out the tax in some countries!! Norway has a 62% tax on their fuel!!! dammmmmmmm

While america only taxes like 14 cents per L… I think in australia we tax about 50 cents?? UK Tax around 1 AUD..

Explains why petrol is cheaper in america..

    • +5

The highest price I saw in June 2008 was 169.9 for unleaded petrol. I took a photo of the price board at Mobil that day and still look at it sometimes, to remind myself of how bad things can be. LPG was 69.9c :-)

Anyway, $1.70/L ($1.55/L at the lowest point) when oil spiked to $141/barrel. The Australian dollar reached near parity back then, up to 96c.

We're at US$81 per barrel atm, with the dollar buying 91.5c. Oil was 74% more expensive back then, and the AUD$ was about 5% more expensive.

The weekly fuel cycle delivered $1.39/L peak in Adelaide last week with much cheaper oil yet only a slightly weaker dollar. Hmm…

Something doesn't quite add up. The refining margin must be much higher now than it was back then. Yet stocks in Australia's only listed refiner (Caltex, ASX:CTX) were over $20 back then and scraping $11 today.

  • great deal can be used with 4c voucher and 2c in store reduction so 16c off
    EXCELLENT DEAL

    • +2

2c in store reduction is a con. Stuff is more expensive in servo stores. And you're better off saving your 4c voucher for a cheaper day when it's a more significant proportion of the price, provided it isn't going to expire soon.

      • +1

lol agreed. I lol at people that buy extra stuff to get the 4 cents off.. not worth it imo.

        • You don't buy anything in the petrol store to get 4c off - you buy your groceries from Coles (or another retailer who offers the discount) to get 4c off, then if you spend $2 or more in the petrol store you get an extra 2c off (total 6c) - The only way this would be good is if you were getting 100L or more of petrol in your vehicle, that way if you spend $2 on a chocolate/ice-cream, you are actually getting it for what you would have to pay anyway with only 4c/L off. So it is actually not that bad for those people (not me) that have those larger fuel tanks, or have two fuel tanks in their FWD etc…

So I guess massari, those people would lol at you…. :P

          • -1

@CrocDundee: How many people fill up 100L :| I fill up max 40 / week. And sorry I was thinking of the woolworths petrol stations, where you get the 4 cents docket, plus another 4 cents if you spend 5$ in store. Wasnt aware its 2 cents @ coles for 2$…

But enjoy the free ice cream :D

          • @CrocDundee: Mmm, I fill up maybe 30 litres perhaps once a fortnight or three weeks. I prefer not to be an environmental vandal. :P

  • i know if you can buy the newspaper at the coles express store for the same price so you can get the extra 2c off, so like me if we buy the paper everyday it works, great deal by the way

  • It says on the voucher that you can use your 4c docket from Coles supermarkets and if you spend $2 or more in store you also get an extra 2c off.

Therefore, that's a total of 16c off V-Power… Good enough for me!

  • +2

I'm not sure why 83 users were so easily fooled. As it has been said fill up on Tuesday/Wednesday, and you save more than 10c. This morning I filled up for 129.9c/L. I know that by Saturday the same fuel costs ~145c/L in Adelaide. So even with the 10c reduction, and a supermarket docket it would work out either same, or more expensive. It's just another ploy by these companies.

    • Lol its the oil companies

  • Fill up in the morning too. Fuel expands and will be larger in the afternoon after it has heated up. Early in the morning it will be at its smallest and you get the best value.

    • Does it make that much difference?

    • That's a myth. The bowsers have temperature sensors to compensate for the expansion. This is needed for summer/winter differences anyway, so within a day there wouldn't be much variation.

    • Unleaded fuel is stored underground where the temperature is constant throughout the day. It is true that refineries like to send product to service stations while it's still hot, as the volume decreases as the fuel cools. But you will see no difference once the fuel cools in the storage tanks on a day/night basis.

The 'hot fuel' claims were aired about 6 years ago (from memory) with large service stations claiming it was costing them $10,000 per year.

  • I paid 122.9 on Gold Coast (QLD) today, saw it up to 135.9 on the weekend…. so not really a bargain…

  • Looks good. The fuel price hasn't changed around here for literally 2 months so no worries what day it is.

As a side note, interesting to see how things are different in the metro areas vs the regional areas. Doesn't seem to be any fuel price cycle around these parts. One less thing to worry about since they'll all rip you off about the same!

    • what price is it?

  • In Toowoomba QLD it sits around 114-118 without any wild fluctuation

  • For those who say that its not a bargain because of the price change on tuesdays - not everyone lives in the city. I am currently visiting my parents in SA and almost everywhere but adelaides dont change or if they do its only a couple of cents so for me something like this is great

    • +3

rubbish. The whole world only revolves around them. If a deal doesn't work for them, it's obviously a bad deal for everybody else too. ;)

  • We'll see this Sunday whether this is just their marketing gimmick or not, although it is start to appear that way.
Today price of fuel in the petrol station near my area already differ by 14c jump ($1.369) compare to the cheapest (1.229), the day before…

    • Why don't we all just wait and see what the petrol price will be on Sunday!

    • Are you using V-Power prices or just Unleaded?

    • Ditto for unleaded prices mate.

      Fri am - 122.9
      Sun am - 135.9

Screw these oil companies and their shoddy offers

  • it will be fail… wait and see
