I just want to clarify none of my posts are attacking ozbargain or it's members, if the owner of ozbargain believe what's happening to be OK, then so be it.

        • +1

@Ipiok: You might want to word your posts differently next time then. Your original post certainly sounds like it's attacking everyone involved in this deal.

        • Thanks TA - you are saving me money, and I have been looking for a laptop purchase! Glad you make a business out of this bargain hunting hobby we have going. I'm slightly jealous and more just appreciative.

Education discount and cashrewards are saving me more money, so thanks again for that info (TA and community working together).

Anyone know how to get cashrewards to work with the education discount? I'm worried I must go through the linked portal, but this does not lead me to the education website.

        • thanks

    No backlit keyboard…no deal!

    • Buy Dell if you want backlit keyboard

    • Actually, do other Lenovo laptops have a backlit keyboard?

    • previous post has expired so how is it a duplicate?
For $2 savings go buy a sundae at hungry jacks

      • -2

Deal has expired however product still available through linked site + TA works for the company who pays cashback. To quote old mate Kerrigan, "it's the vibe of the thing"

        • +10

I don't care who works for who as long as its a valid bargain on this site from stores selling legit items and hate when some of the stores hide the fact that there is a 2% CC and 2.5% PP surcharge and shipping on top of it.

If you know a cheaper deal for this laptop then do post one here and it will be appreciated by this wider community looking for a good bargain.

        • +2

@ozdesi: Well said ozdesi. This is indeed a great deal, which doesn't hide any CC surcharges and adds shipping on top, then there's CR on top of that, a substantial amount.
Great comment, summarises why this deal is so good.

  • +1

Any chance for a good deal on the 15.6" laptop? I missed out the previous special with Monkey code.

    • +1

yeah, also after a good deal on the E560, missed out last time when the deal ended early.

  • is this laptop good for uni student? who is studying computer science?

    • +11

If I was you I would be worried about your job prospects.

Anyone who intends to study CS should be able to answer your question easily.

      • +1

Could be a gift for someone!

      • +2

Just wanted to know others opinion on this laptop for a CS student

        • +1

Normally people would be asking a CS student if that laptop was good for them. ;)

It depends on what you intend to use it for. It's definitely powerful enough for most tasks a CS student would use it for, I think! Maybe more RAM in the future?

        • Id recommend a MacBook Pro…with top line amd graphix and a Retina display. Minimum 16 GB Ram. It'll ensure your "hello world" program won't lag.

      • And yeah thanks for the info. I am quite aware about the job market and my future.. :)

        • My point is that if you can't work out whats a good computer the chances are you have no interest in CS. Even an average CS student would know if this computer is good.

      • +3

They don't say they are studying computer science, this could be the students Mum/Dad looking to get his/her son a good deal to last him 4 years at Uni.

In that case, it is more than powerful enough for a computer science degree. If you wanted some extra speed you could upgrade to an SSD later.

        @EDIT - Didn't see page 2 replies :P

        • Upgrade to ssd while buying or replace later?

        • @Bik: Upgrade later! You'll get more GBs for your $, and you can pick a faster SSD too.

    • It would be an excellent laptop for computer science
Get the upgraded SSD & better wifi attanae
Buy Windows Pro through eBay to save money
Check the education prices on Lenovo too.

  • I just bought a e560 lenevo .. Win7 pro and win 10 pro.. With 8gb ram and i7 , r7 M370 2gb graphics card with additional sleeve 1$ , wireless mouse 1$ and office 365 1yr 1$ and 1TB hdd -for $1103..

I am still waiting for shipment. Is it worth to cancel the order and go for this model?

    I am not a heavy gamer :)

    • how did you get office 365 for $1 ?

      • Yes for 1 year subscription..

        • +1

          That's not what they asked

    • If you cancelled they'd send it anyway and get you to send it back for free
I just bought the same as you with ssd and upgraded wifi for $970 with cash rewards for a further -$50

Worth cancelling if you have the cash and don't mind the stuff around if you want smaller screen
Better price and add an ssd still cheaper

      • I just made an analysis of my situation.. As i am travelling out of Australia i can claim 10% GST at airport which will bring it down to 1000$ .. And e460 with win7 pro is 988$ .. Thinking of not to stuff around for 12$ and Fixed Battery.

        Appreciate your suggestion BTW :)

        • They've actually changed the TRS system. You can only claim up products to $900. On return to Australia you will be subject to paying the 10% GST again. It's not as easy as it used to be.

        • +1

          @Firey1989:

You can only claim up products to $900

Where did you hear this from? There is no ceiling listed here.

On return to Australia you will be subject to paying the 10% GST again

That has always been the case.

        • @eug:

          http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller

If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring in up to A$900 worth of general goods into Australia duty-free

          https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Duty-Free-concessions

If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring up to A$900 worth of general goods into Australia duty-free.
If you are under 18 years of age there is a A$450 limit.
General goods include gifts, souvenirs, cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrates, jewellery, watches and sporting equipment.

        • +2

@Firey1989: That has nothing to do with TRS. It just means you can go overseas and buy things worth up to $900 and bring them in duty-free.

        • +1

          @eug:

Also applies to the stuff you claimed on the way out.

          Tourist Refund Scheme
If you return to Australia with goods for which you have claimed a GST refund under the TRS on departure, you must declare those goods at Question 3 on the Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) if their value exceeds the passenger concession of A$900.

GST refunds received on goods exceeding the passenger concession will have to be repaid if the items are brought into Australia.

        • +2

@Firey1989: That has always been the case. Nothing has changed.

          You said:

You can only claim up products to $900.

That is incorrect. You can claim pretty much any amount, e.g. $3,000 for a laptop that you're buying for someone else overseas.

Plenty of people claim TRS and simply don't declare it when they come back in. It looks like people don't often get caught, but it has happened before.

TRS is not meant to be a scheme that allows residents to avoid GST on all their purchases. As the name implies, it's for tourists to claim GST for things they buy on the way out of the country. Many other countries don't allow their residents to claim tax back in the same way.

        • @eug:

          That makes sense then.

Hello guys, I'm after 2 advices. First I'd like to know if it's convenient to pay 100$ extra for the sad card since I could add a better one later but I guess that that would nullify the warranty. Secondly I'd like to know your thoughts on this option http://www.computeralliance.com.au/asus-n551jb-dm019h-15.6-core-i7-notebook-windows-8.1-save-$300 . It's more expensive but I trust Asus better and plus the fixed battery worries me a bit. I'd appreciate any answer. Thanks

    • +2

How would it nullify the warranty - if there's a problem and you have to send it back, simply get the hdd that came with the laptop and place it back in. They wouldn't know a thing, and no seals/labels are broken when you open the back case.

    • +1

Better graphics card in the Asus, not as good processor
      By the looks anyway
I asked Lenovo about warranty and they said said it won't void warranty as long as what you've done didn't cause the problem, which is up to them

    • +1

Asus are a bitch to upgrade. I.e. Ram ssd etc. I've worked with a lot and they are a crazy hard to open up. They also use soldered ram on some models so be careful. Lenovo on the other hand always been a lot easier to access

  • Great laptop. Good build quality. Would recommend.
Only fits 7.5mm HDD's/SSDs. No larger.

  • Hows the battery life on this one?

  • Bought one for work :)

  • Anyone know where I can look at one of these near the Sydney CBD?

I believe JB-HiFi doesn't have these business models, and I like to try before buy so to speak (even though this is a very good deal)

    • JB and HN don't stock thinkpads

  • Hey TA, any deal on the i5 version like you did last time with the monkey code?

  • Is it worth it to purchase the additional warranty (2 years)?

    • Nope. I never buy additional warranties. Waste of money.

      • Haha … noted …

I did purchase the additional 2nd year warranty … its for work so WTH … credit card extended warranty covers 2nd year but has an excess thats higher than the $90+ next business day warranty. Besides I think this laptop has got a built in battery so might as well get the warranty if the battery meets it maker before the 2 year mark, at least I'm covered (I hope it covers battery =X)

Enter the BIOS and enable the Fn/Ctrl key swap.

The placement doesn't make sense, but I've never had any issue with it. I got used to it quickly and never thought about it after.

        • While I don't mind the Fn/Ctrl swap, a real deal-breaker for me is replacing physical F-keys with a touch strip. Now that was a really dumb move!

          http://recode.net/2014/02/04/lenovo-overhauls-the-famous-thi…

Good thing they realized it and reverted back to standard F keys the following year. Apart from corporate-types, ThinkPads are often purchased by techy types who actually use the F keys.

    • No, none of the ThinkPads ever did.

    • Lenovo typically include a lot of bloat, but they're not very intrusive and very easy to remove.

  • What's the weight of this laptop?

I find it strange no one ever posts the weight of laptops when they post a deal, when weight is an important price driver when it comes to laptops, it is one of the most important specs for determining if a laptop is a good deal.

I just looked it up in the spec sheet, 'starting at 1.9kg', might have to contact lenovo to find out what the actual weight is with the standard configuration. As the 1.9kg would be without a gfx card, and with an SSD.

EDIT: They told me it's 1.9kg with an SSD and around 2kg with a HDD. Didn't mention anything about the gfx card so I guess this model doesnt come without one and the 1.9kg includes it. Not a bad weight for a non-ultrabook.

    • I have one in cart and it says 2.4kg. Though it could vary depending on your own selection of components.

      • Where do you see that, I'm looking at it in the cart and don't see anything about the weight

        • Would like to know this too.

  • Is the dedicated gpu soldered on? Or can it be removed? I am not a gamer, and would like the battery to last as long as possible per charge. The dedicated GPU would drain the battery faster.

    • +2

      "NightElfHunter" "not a gamer"

But in seriousness, you can use Windows to disable the GPU without having to physically remove it. By default, Windows intelligently switches between using the GPU and Intel Graphics, depending on what you're doing.

      • In game name: xDarkLegolasx

  • Am I the only one who doesn't like the touchpad on the Lenovo Thinkpads?
Bought one for my mum about a year ago and every time I use it, it bothers me.

    • I haven't tried the one on this model, but the one on my ThinkPad Yoga is the best I've ever used. I slightly prefer it to the one on the SurfaceBook, even.

  • Is this upgraded network worthwhile for $17?

    • +1

      yes

    • Yes

    • Definitely. The stock radio is a gimped 1x1. To get the benefits of MIMO you need to go 2x2 at least.
MIMO gives you twice the speed and better range.

  • Bought 1 for friend. Keep up the good work TA!

  • To add SSD or MS Office 'activation card'?

    • I upgraded to ssd using the $100 saved from os downgrade
Than add sleeve for $1. And upgrade wifi for $17

  • +1

    Just went to purchase.
Web page is now in maintenance.

Was super keen until I saw that there is no numeric keyboard. I probably should get with the times I guess!
Actually looks like I am after the E560 then.

Any chance for a deal on an E560?

  • +2

Mr TA any chance of a deal on E560?

  • Hey guys, I'm looking for a second opinion. Should I get this laptop or the E560 for $1000 at lenovo? Same specs as far as I know, except the E560 has a 15.6" screen and a better GPU (R7 m370 rather than the m360). I intend to use the laptop for uni but would also like the option to play some games on it. Does the GPU justify paying an extra $150 or so? Thank you

  • Mohaz one other detail is I believe that E560 has a DVD burner too. Also the numeric keypad which I really like. Really wish they would drop the price again on E560 though!

    • I ended up not getting the e460. Now my fingers are crossed that a sale comes on for the e560 instead. I hope I don't regret this decision

  • What does everyone think of this laptop?

    http://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-n551jq-cn094h-156-full-hd#

I was quite keen on purchasing the Lenovo laptop for school, but after reading many complaints regarding warranty issues surrounding Lenovo, I've been put off. I came across this one and it seems like a viable option. As far as I'm aware, it has a better processor as well as better graphics, a larger screen, a SSD, and an optical drive for only $300 more. Additionally, there's less of a risk in terms of warranty if issues were to arise.

Can someone who's more experienced regarding computers recommend the one that I've posted? I'm hoping it lasts several years for the duration of my studies.

    Cheers

    • I've never used this laptop, although, the reviews are terrible

    • I really wouldn't buy from Centrecom instead of Lenovo because you want better warranty support. Centrecom have a horrible reputation (though my personal experience with them has been fine).

Larger screen and optical drive are not necessarily benefits, depends on the individual really as they add more weight and size. That is a very heavy laptop at 2.7kg, the one in this deal is around 2kg.

Not sure on the CPU, I believe it is better in terms of performance, but the push with the newer generation CPUs from intel has been about using less power so I doubt you'd get the same sort of battery life from that laptop as you would the one in this deal.

Lastly, $888 in comparison to $1,199 isn't a small difference in price, it's more than a third pricier.

Depends what you want really, if it was me for $1,199 I'd want a completely different laptop to what you linked (I'd want a good ultrabook), but if all you care about is having the highest specs and performance and don't care about weight and battery life (which is fair enough if you aren't taking it anywhere most the time) then that's a good laptop and better than this one.

  • Hi TA,

I'm in the market for two new laptops. Is there any chance for another Lenovo deal similar to this one?

    Regards,
    Diego
