Maldives is such a nice place to relax. Very isolated, but in a good way.

    • +3

How is the cost of food and attractions?

      • +3

Get all inclusive if you like to drink. Resorts cover entire islands so the only attractions are either the resorts facilities and the day trips they offer. From memory day trips were around $150 to $400 US. Some Islands have their own reef very close whereas others have their house reef a bit offshore and you have to take a boat to get there. Going to the Maldives isnt about attractions - its about lying around an incredible beach with incredible water with a cocktail in your hand.

      • +2

Expensive but totally worth it. When I was there, my hotel requires a seaplane to get to hotel. The view on plane was the most amazing thing ever. I did spend $850 a day including food and accom on the island for 2 persons. Activities are not cheap too, but not many places offer you dives in 3 very different reefs in 1 day with dolphins' company.

      • Aso note one thing: with sea level going up each year, in 10 years time you won't see Maldives any longer.

        • +7

Pft… they said that 10 years ago

        • +4

@muncan: it is happening. I need to dive 50cm deeper to see the same reef now. Resorts on small islands are often built on islands having reefs around. Reefs absorb wave energy to keep resort safe. But it is close to a breach on many islands. When I was there many Hilton staff were working on fixing a resteraunt damaged by waves during a typhoon. It was the first time when wave reached any building on the island.

@rubig: I don't doubt you, but I'd be hesitant to only give them a decade. I visited Venice after hearing it would soon be gone.
          It's still there - bastards!

        • @muncan: true!

        • +2

@rubig: Can I ask if you brought a ruler along with you? Should I bring a ruler if I go?

        • +3

@Danstar: so long as they are benevolent. Island dictators rarely produce good results.

        • +1

@muncan: How good is Venice tho? Just proposed to my partner there last month :)

.. oh sorry, back to Maldives.

        • @immortalbjr: Classic move. I went back a second time just for a day with the goal of losing myself. Try as I might, I could not.
          I'm still here too… Bastard.

        • The Maldives are sinking, actually.

        • Haha, yeah the place is abit like that, a small maze where you eventually end up back somewhere you started. Lovely place and people though.

If you havn't yet hire a car or do a tour upto Cortina and around the dolomites, we hired a car all day and drove up there was the highlight of our trip for us.

        • @cornbeef: do you dive often? If you do you will know 50cm deeper does make difference.

  • Shukuriyyaa

Very tempting, but what do we do there if food and shelter is overpriced?

      Don't go?

      Dive

Anyone been before and can recommend some accommodation?

    • +2

My partner and I just got back from Anantara Dhigu, unbelievable location we had the best time.
Food and activities are expensive (budget 1-200 USD per day minimum) however I highly recommend it!
Take into consideration the transfer costs from the Male Airport to your resort (ours was 360USD return for 2 people however I have seen some resorts charge up to 7-800 US return via seaplane).

    • +2

We recently returned from our honeymoon, stayed at Centara Ras Fushi.

Activities expect 60-200 USD. Our food was part of an all inclusive package, that included all meals and drinks.

It was a speed boat transfer inclusive of the accommodation price.

I had my honeymoon on Anantara Veli - it was 10/10. Veli is the "couples" orientated resort, while Dhigu (from the poster above) is more of a "family" orientated resort. The beauty is there is a ferry that travels from resort to resort, and if you stay at one, you can use the facilities (e.g. gym, spa) and the restaurants at the other. It's sort of like 2 for 1. The interesting thing is that the Sultan of Brunei apparently booked out the entire resort for himself a couple of years ago!

It was an awesome place to visit. One of the benefits is that it is a boat ride from Male airport - which is far cheaper then having to get a seaplane, like some of the other resorts. We paid for breakfast only - and would hit the gym in the mornings, book a late breakfast and eat to our fill. Then I'd take a few bits of fruit to snack on during the day. We wold book ourselves in for dinner at one of the 5-6 restaurants that were on the three islands.

I emailed a company called "Alpha Maldives" and this lady, Janice, helped me organise my booking. She did everything over email and called me a few times to discuss any issues I had. I didn't feel comfortable sending my credit card details over email, I sent them all the info they needed, and she called me to get them over the phone. Call me paranoid, but I wanted to check it was all legit so I emailed the resort the following week and they confirmed my booking. You can contact them on this email address - [email protected]

I can give you 2 more tips

      1. I always wanted to book an over water villa - which we did for 8 days. It was great, but it did leave you with less privacy then if you booked a beach side villa. Once you head out the back and into the water, you can swim back a few meters, and all of a sudden you can see into not only your villa, but the villas either side of yours. If i went back, i'd book a beachside villa for my entire stay - or book both. over water for a few, then beachside or vice versa.

      2. If the resort isn't full when yo get there - they might offer you an upgrade into one of their plusher rooms at a far better price then if you booked it prior to your arrival. We were meant to be staying in more basic over water villa - but once we got there we decided to pay for an upgrade to one of the ocean pool bungalows. I haggled on the price, which they accepted. It was sensational. We moved into this room for the last few days. Massive room. Own pool. Ocean views. Complete privacy. We had our own butler who we could contact 24/7 on our own mobile phone which was given to us. It was this move which made me change my mind about the beach side room - they rock and give great privacy. I wish i was back there

      Sorry about my huge post!

PS: Just check your charges when you go - we 'accidently' got charged for a photo session which we didn't book.I picked it up cause I'm an ozbargainer and already knew how much I had to pay upon leaving

We stayed at Komandoo, which was absolutely fantastic! They recently came #5 for most romantic resort in the world on Tripadvisor. Though I was there for my honeymoon, I chose it for the snorkeling! Great house reef and dive sites nearby.
Best place I've ever been, and I've traveled a reasonable amount.

        But not cheap.

Oh and we booked through Purely Maldives who were excellent to deal with.

        • I did hear purely maldives were also good when I was looking - there is a thread or two on whirlpool about it

  • Hi guys long time lurker first time poster

I can't comment on recent changes but when i went back in 2011 it was pretty expensive but well worth it at the time…our expenses ended up being almost double that of a usa trip which was longer.

There was alot of tax on foods and services as well, accomdation cost vary on the islands you go to/resorts you visit…can be a ~3000 week or a ~100000 week depending on what you want

  • +1

The Maldives are not a cheap destination if you are going for a resort island. Personally I prefer a resort island as this is country one goes to for the island experience. Many do all inclusive but the quality varies.

These flights are fabulous prices, however March is peak season in the Maldives and accommodation may be difficult to secure. It is also at its most expensive.

We are divers/snorkellers and I'd recommend Vilamendhoo, Mirihi, Kandolhu and the Park Hyatt. None of these will come truly cheap though!

Maldives is one country where a reputable travel agent can really assist. Personally I have found those based in the UK to be much more knowledgeable than local ones who tried ot send me to family friendly resorts with poor diving despite my criteria being as few children as possible and as much great diving as possible.

  • For those looking for a cheaper alternative, research boracay which is just out from Manila, beautiful island!!

    • +2

Boracay is not a comparison i would be making. I have been to the Phils many times, going again in May, but its an altogether different experience to Maldives.

  • Is it possible for a stopover in HK?

    • +1

You should be. I just bought Cathay ticket to Tokyo and added 2 nights stopover in HK. Just search using multiple destination and you will end up with same fares.

  • +2

I have been twice, one at resort all inclusive and one a boat surf trip southern atolls. Its paradise. Here is cheap accomodation/food $110 US a night all inclusive. Not resort style but if you surf/dive/snorkal and just want sleep and food.

  • it says to clock Poli, how do we pay using that system?

    • Poli logs into your online banking and pretty much pays it forward. I've used it in the past

      • Thanks, I have thought about using it as it is a way to avoid Jetstar fees. Is it open to anyone?

        • If you have online banking. Yes.
And if your bank is listed in their list. It has all major banks from what I've seen

  • These flights are this Wednesday and next Wednesday.

200 clicks so far! I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who was prepared to fly to the Maldives within the next week.

    • I'd be prepared to fly to the Maldives within the next week. Work and the bank account, not so much!

  • Not a bad price for Cathay Pacific. Though Etihad is around this price when they have a sale on, and imo are a better experience in economy. Then again, this a more logical/quicker routing.
Something else to note, there are some very good value business class air fares into Europe and America ex-Male worth looking into.

  • Is it a safe time to go there?

  • Anyone know the flight time from Sydney?

  • March is a great time for weather, sunny and light winds, surf is usually smaller though, but if you are into diving/snorkling perfect.

  • Got to love Ozbargainers discussing trips to Maldives, one of the most expensive holidays in the world :)

Goes to show you the wealthiest are often the biggest tight asses :)

    • The 1% are 99% OzBargainer.

  • Flying to the Maldives via HKG or Abu Dhabi makes no sense at all (except maybe for the pricing) These hubs are nowhere near en-route. Far better to hub through Singapore or KL.
