AmEx Platinum Charge Card 100,000 Bonus Rewards Points ($1200 Annual Fee & $100,000+ Annual Income)

1610

OK, this deal is not for everyone: the fee is $1,200, and you have to report an income of $100k+ (though in my experience AmEx don't check this thoroughly). The value proposition, however, is compelling:
Spend $1k in 2 months, get 100,000 points (or get 120,000 points using the referral link of a fellow Ozbargainer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…), which can be redeemed for the same number of points with Qantas, Velocity (Virgin), Singapore, or a whole host of other airlines.

125,000 Velocity points will get you return to Europe with Etihad (economy), but also one way in business class.

110k will get you one way to Europe with Singapore first class - that includes the insanely luxurious suites, if you can manage to get a flight on the A380.

The 120,000 points more than justify the fee.

The rest of the features of this card are brilliant, and make it a great deal when thrown in with the bonus points:

Other features include:

  • Unlimited airport lounge access (cardholder/supplementary cardholder and a guest) to Virgin (if flying Virgin), Amex, Priority Pass, Delta Skyclub lounges
  • Free Platinum Reserve credit card (on request) which just means a free domestic flight or a night in a luxury hotel
  • A $300 travel credit to spend on Amex travel (for hotels and flights booked through Amex's travel site)
  • Access to AmEx's Fine Hotels & Resorts service (ie book luxury hotels through the Amex platinum site) which means: 4pm late check out, breakfast, often a $100 USD hotel credit (for room service eg food/drinks), room upgrades, noon check in. I had a look and could book rooms at Melbourne's Park Hyatt for $285 a night and get all of these benefits (inc $100USD hotel credit).
  • Elite Loyalty status: Starwood Preferred Guest, Club Carlson, Shangri-La Golden Circle, and Hilton HHonors
  • Usual platinum credit card insurances, but what is unique is that it offers Roadside Assistance cover (up to $200)

In a nutshell - if you're planning on doing a bit of traveling in the next year, and aren't on a shoestring budget, this is a bloody brilliant card to have.

Note that the usual Amex promotion condition applies (people who've held in the previous twelve months excluded), but, like with all recent Amex promotions, this doesn't seem to be enforced at all by Amex. I got the bonus despite already holding two Amex cards (got 80k sign-up bonuses on both of them, too).

Cheers, enjoy your 20,000 points, and thanks for the post.

Also, the guy on the phone told me that in the last 48 hours they have increased the $200 travel credit to $300. The AccorPlus programme will be discontinued April 15.

        • @davechan: Thanks for the update. I'll see if I can squeeze the extra $100 out of them! Enjoy the card. :)

Regarding the minimum income; as a retiree/superannuant most of my income is tax free (ie Nett income) Whereas they require a minimum of $100K gross. And so I took my income and calculated what it equated to in gross income (ie = over $100K). They asked for copies of income documents which I uploaded along with a written explanation. Then I didn't hear from them and so I rang them. I had to do a lot of explaining gross vs nett etc and they were very helpful. They said that they would contact me if they needed anything else. No sooner had I hung up than they SMS'd me saying that I was approved. YEE HAA!!!

    1. Re the Amex Platinum RESERVE Credit Card; is there any benefit to getting a supplementary Reserve card too?
    2. As I am going away for a couple of weeks, time will be tight for applying for the ACCOR PLUS. How do you apply for ACCOR PLUS?
    • +1
      1. I doubt it - get your free flight/hotel stay, and forget about it.
      2. Application is done through the portal in your Amex login. It's automatic, along with everything else. Took about 7 or 8 working days for me.
      • Thanks.

Supplementary any AMEX is good for the statement credit deals, as long as the supplementary card number differs to the card number of the primary card holder (and it does, for AMEX direct issued).

Otherwise no, no real other benefit.

  • The Card's Travel insurance is very interesting.
"cover is effective when you pay the full fare for a trip":………………..or "with any other travel rewards or frequent flyer points provided the taxes and/or surcharges have been charged to your American Express Platinum card account".

    Oh crap..
Forgot to use the referral code when signing up.

Does anyone know if I can still redeem 120,000 instead of 100,000?

Or… does anyone know the number to call? Cant seem to find the correct number on the website..

    • Yea call them ASAP. Don't have the number but check your email application?

And then re-apply with a referral.

      • Just an update. They said I have no chance of obtaining the referral bonus as if i cancel I will not be able to get the 120k points.

Guess I learnt the hard way.

        Still a great deal nonetheless.

        • Why? Beacuse you wouldn't be a "new account holder"?

Thought it would be ok because my friend did the same.. called quickly, cancelled, and he was fine to re-apply using referral link. Maybe you left it too long?

  • Does anybody know if this card will get you a Sydney Airport Express Path pass?

    • Yes, it does for Sydney, but not for Melbourne.

      • Do you just flash your Amex C Card, or do you get the express pass from somewhere? If the CC, The people monitoring the express channel don't look very closely at what you are flashing at them! So if you just flash the CC, then u could use any CC of the same colour!

        • Depending on the person in charge, they may check your name on Amex Platinum Charge and boarding pass. But in most case just flash your Amex and boarding pass together.

  • I have searched on Singapore Airlines redemption award tickets ex BNE or SYD to destinations in Europe and the taxes and charges are at least $1000, and up to $1300. How are people getting $550 odd? Also when the seat is waitlisted, what is the process and what are the chances of one actually getting the seat?

    • Do you hold any Status with SQ, or Star Allaince? Did you try points+pay, or flexible economy+upgrade request?

    • I noticed with SQ redemptions that they especially put you onto a wait list if the flight selection is for an A380

      • No, that's just that they have a waitlist for award seats that are already booked, and the A380 is naturally very popular.
Keep looking, and you'll find the odd seat bookable immediately.

  • You can add another benefit to that list. Free roadside assistance, for one car which is maximum 8 years old, and used for private purpose (non-commercial) only.

    • Please correct me if I am wrong, but the way that I read it, the 'call out' is free, but after that you pay for everything! If that is the case, then it is worthless.

      • Should your car break down when you're travelling anywhere more than 50kms from your home in Australia, we'll arrange and pay up to AUD400 or 400km, whichever is less, for your car to be towed to the nearest garage or for on-the-spot repairs. Platinum membership can also assist you with any number of predicaments around the home as well. If something goes wrong, sourcing a plumber, electrician or locksmith isn't a problem.

        • Thanks - it all adds up to a card that I might have to keep whilst churning other cards.

      • It is serviced by RACV in Victoria and similar provider in other states.

  • Just a quick question. How long does it take to get Accor Plus after enrolment? I got my Le Club membership on 16th of March and still waiting for Accor Plus. Thanks.

  • If you cancel the card before renewal, what happens to your points?

    • Transfer the points to one of your preferred airline or hotel partners.

      • Ta,could you transfer them to your other Amex card?

        • +1

I believe not. But that being said, if you have two or more Amex cards you can merge your membership reward points (accumulate all points in one place, and also get points in future in one single point balance). And then you can cancel one or more card without loosing your points.

  • When peeps applied, how long until you found out? Do they advise the result by email or do you wait for the response via post only?

  • Sorry in advance if i am asking too many questions. So I have applied and do have an existing Edge. If I am issued this card but do not receive the points after meeting the qualifying spend, if I cancel is it possible to receive a pro rate refund of the annual fee? The reason i ask is some cards don't.

    • I am not talking from personal experience, but I have read a lot of posts, not sure where, poss here or AFF, that say that they will repay a prorata of the annual fee.

    • Do they tell us in advance before we spend that $1000? Has anyone actually been refused the bonus points?

  • Got my card last week and reading around I discovered the American Express Local Champion program. It effectively enables you to earn a bonus point for $ spent at stores in which you become the local champion of. Would bring Supermarket spends to 4 points per dollar. Only possible on the Apple Amex app. More details on the program in the link below.

  • Has anyone been able to successfully use the $200 travel credit online? I can't see it when I go to book a hotel…

    • You need to wait a month. I found out the hard way, and have to call back in a week or two to get the $200 off them.

  • Enjoy an increased travel credit1 of $300 every year

From 15 April 2016, when you renew your Platinum Card Membership, you'll now receive an increased annual Platinum Travel Credit1 of $300. You can redeem your $300 Platinum Travel Credit online with American Express Travel where you can use the credit on eligible prepaid flights, hotels or car hire. Plus, when you spend on American Express Travel Online on prepaid hotels, car hire and experiences, you'll earn one bonus point per dollar spent2 until 31 December 2016.

If you’d prefer to book over the phone through your Platinum Travel Service, you can only use the $200 travel credit towards return flights departing from Australia to any international destination1. When booking via Platinum Travel Service, you can book with airlines such as: Qantas, Emirates and Singapore Airlines however this excludes low cost carriers, for eligible airlines, please contact your Platinum Travel Service.

    Who benefits?

Primary Platinum Card Member. However, the travel credit can be used for others, providing the balance is paid on the Primary Card Member's Card1

    • Under the previous $200 credit online, it could only be used for a 'single' eligible travel booking. I assume that it is still the same.

      • I believe so, also you will get $300 when you book online, over the phone you still get $200 credit. Note: From 15 April 2016.

    • I think this is due to them no longer offering AccorPlus

  • Just a quick question. How long does it take to get Accor Plus after enrolment? I got my Le Club membership on 16th of March and still waiting for Accor Plus. Thanks.

    • +1

      Took me about two weeks.

Thanks? I hope you already got your 20K from me.

Le Club membership email 15th March, and then an email 23 March "Welcome to Accor Plus" membership of 'Accor Advantage Plus Platinum'.
But I need info. about how to get the free night. My profile shows "Stay Plus Benefit: 0 available"

      • Thanks, did you try booking your free night online or over the phone?

        • I only tried online as a 'test run'. Not ready to book yet.

        • @peck:

          Step 1: Plan

The Stay Plus complimentary night is subject to an allocation, meaning that not every available room is allocated for this purpose. If you are looking to use your Stay Plus complimentary night on a weekend or special event periods, be sure to book well in advance. You can book up to 12 months ahead. To check availability, simply sign-in to the Accor Plus website.

In our Hotel Guide, within the individual hotel details, you will find any special conditions for the Stay Plus benefit, if they apply. For example, if a hotel requires a minimum length of stay or if the hotel does not participate in the Stay Plus benefit.
It is wise to have a few dates in mind before exploring your desired destinations.

The Stay Plus benefit is only available to primary members and is non-transferable.

          Step 2: Book

Here’s a step by step guide to help you book online

          1. Log onto the Accor Plus website using your either your membership number or email address to sign-in and a password to log-on

          2. Select your desired hotel destination and dates. Be sure to tick the check box asking if you wish to book your Stay Plus benefit

          3. The website will search based on your selection criteria and then display all hotels available for that date range which have a Stay Plus benefit available

          4. In some cases a Stay Plus benefit may not be available, based on your selection criteria. In this case, if available the search results may offer you the option to use your Stay Plus benefit towards a room upgrade to the next category.

Please note: if you are booking your Stay Plus benefit by phone through the Accor Hotels Reservations number, a booking fee of AUD $20 will apply.

        • @rashed: Thanks for the info. I don't seem to have a 'stay plus' credit at the moment, but will leave it a while and ring them. If necessary, I will pay the $20.

        • +1

          @rashed: FYI 20k coming your way… I just signed-up via your referral link ;)

        • @NoMoneyNoHoney: Thanks a lot NoMoneyNoHoney, You're so kind.

        • @peck: Did your stay plus benefit ever show up, and if not, did you follow up with AMEX, and what was the outcome? Mine still says '0' stay plus benefits available after over a month.

        • +1

@adelee: Sorry for the late reply. Yes the stay plus showed up in my account online and booked a night. Regards Peck

        • @peck: Thanks. Mine never did, so contacted Accor, who confirmed the benefit and are fixing it manually for me.

    • Just a quick comment to confirm that even though it's supposed to be no longer accessible, the Accor Plus component of this card is still active. The link is still active, and I was able to enrol 2 days ago. Jyst got my email advising I've been upgraded to Accor Plus Platinum.

      • It will be active till 1st of May 2016, if I remember correctly.

      • Where can one find this link?

  • +1

Information that I obtained by phone that may be of use to others:-
    1. I tried to enrol more than 1 supplementary card holder into Priority Pass by phone to AMEX, but their system will not allow it. I.E. restricted to one Supplementary card holder only. (However both my, and 1st the Supp. card holder's PPass does allow for a total of 2 people free per PP card to enter the PP Lounge. So if travelling together that is 4 people free)
    2. International Travel Insurance Cover (ACE Insurance ph 1800 236023).
    A. Can also be for Frequent flyer redemptions as long as the taxes etc are paid by Plat. CC.
    B. Can be for Paypal payments (Particularly useful to avoid Air Asia CC fees)
    C. Can be for a combination of FF redemptions and paid airfare. EG Paid in full for Outwards flight, but inwards flight is on a redemption.

  • For those who wants to apply for the complimentary AMEX Platinum Reserve Card, you can use this PDF application file: https://goo.gl/RNHgzC

    • Hi all will I get 100k bonus points if I spend 1000 in two months?
I had supplementary AMEX Edge card issued by amex before.
In charge card T&C says the bonus points will be only for the new customers.
I am bit worried about this. Can anybody clarify this please?

BTW I just used the Sydney airport express immigration & security by flashing my Amex card. Breezed thru, and then into the Amex lounge for free brekky. The ONLY way to fly !! This card is a 'Keeper'

    • Noice… that's what I wanted to hear~!

  • I'm currently in Singapore airport…first class lounge….courtesy of these points…costs a bit more than 60k points for first class from Asia. Service impeccable. Thanks Crowsnest Bomber for giving me this idea (and I hope you got a few bundles of points I redirected to you).

Card is not for everyone, but is super for those who can afford it!!

    • which route?

      • Pretty much any SE Asian route will be available - the difficulty will be finding the flights to Oz. But much easier than finding availability with Qantas.

    • +1

Pleasure mate! Hope you lap it up and act like a really important person for a day.

I just returned from my Qatar business class flights back from the UK. Absolutely brilliant!

And yes, thanks to your post I was awarded a couple of referral bonus points, which is awesome as they just bought me and my 1.5yo daughter a flight to perth and back business class to see the family.

  • Hi guys, quick q (i couldnt confirm it reading the comments)
I'd love to sign up - does that mean once I get the 120k points, I can transfer the points to my FF program and cancel the card? ie I don't necessarily need to travel during the time I have the card active? Perhaps I could book a trip 18 months from now but cancel the card in 3 months from now.

    • Yes, that's fine.

    • +1

You can transfer the points as soon as you want. That would, however, be a waste of all the other benefits of the card. Just keep for a year, then cancel.

As for booking trips, generally you can't book more than 11 months or so out with the airlines. The points usually last either 18 months (if no activity, as with Virgin or Qantas), or 36 months (will expire in this time, as with Singapore).

  • FYI card offer has now been extended to 1 August 2016 (per offer link).

  • +2

Thanks OP, just got my card after applying for it last week using a fellow OzBargainer's referral link, couldn't be happier…will now try and get that Amex Reserve card for the free flight/hotel bonus each year.

  • +2

Anyone departing Don Mueang 'domestic only' with their PPass lounge pass, there is now a beautiful lounge called the Coral Lounge. Very nice indeed.

  • Just a note for those who are still contemplating this card: the direct link to the card say it expires the 1st of August but if you use a referral link it says 15th of August :)

    • Not sure why someone would neg your comment

      • I didn't neg, but the original comment asked people to use excalibur_18's referral link.

        • Yeah, that was my fault. I realised afterwards referral solicitation wasn't allowed and edited my post. But strangely I'm pretty sure I did that before I was negged. Oh well?

        • @excalibur_18:
I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, it isn't the greatest crime against humanity!

        • -2

@excalibur_18: Comments that help the Ozb. communuty are good, but that is negated by including one's own referrel link. ie. the comment then becomes self-serving.
