AmEx Platinum Charge Card 100,000 Bonus Rewards Points ($1200 Annual Fee & $100,000+ Annual Income)

1610

OK, this deal is not for everyone: the fee is $1,200, and you have to report an income of $100k+ (though in my experience AmEx don't check this thoroughly). The value proposition, however, is compelling:
Spend $1k in 2 months, get 100,000 points (or get 120,000 points using the referral link of a fellow Ozbargainer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…), which can be redeemed for the same number of points with Qantas, Velocity (Virgin), Singapore, or a whole host of other airlines.

125,000 Velocity points will get you return to Europe with Etihad (economy), but also one way in business class.

110k will get you one way to Europe with Singapore first class - that includes the insanely luxurious suites, if you can manage to get a flight on the A380.

The 120,000 points more than justify the fee.

The rest of the features of this card are brilliant, and make it a great deal when thrown in with the bonus points:

Other features include:

  • Unlimited airport lounge access (cardholder/supplementary cardholder and a guest) to Virgin (if flying Virgin), Amex, Priority Pass, Delta Skyclub lounges
  • Free Platinum Reserve credit card (on request) which just means a free domestic flight or a night in a luxury hotel
  • A $300 travel credit to spend on Amex travel (for hotels and flights booked through Amex's travel site)
  • Access to AmEx's Fine Hotels & Resorts service (ie book luxury hotels through the Amex platinum site) which means: 4pm late check out, breakfast, often a $100 USD hotel credit (for room service eg food/drinks), room upgrades, noon check in. I had a look and could book rooms at Melbourne's Park Hyatt for $285 a night and get all of these benefits (inc $100USD hotel credit).
  • Elite Loyalty status: Starwood Preferred Guest, Club Carlson, Shangri-La Golden Circle, and Hilton HHonors
  • Usual platinum credit card insurances, but what is unique is that it offers Roadside Assistance cover (up to $200)

In a nutshell - if you're planning on doing a bit of traveling in the next year, and aren't on a shoestring budget, this is a bloody brilliant card to have.

Note that the usual Amex promotion condition applies (people who've held in the previous twelve months excluded), but, like with all recent Amex promotions, this doesn't seem to be enforced at all by Amex. I got the bonus despite already holding two Amex cards (got 80k sign-up bonuses on both of them, too).

      • How can you sell those? I got 2 and My partner couldn't even use it if I am not travelling with him

    • Useful when your flight is delayed.

      • Yeah I guess that's the only usefulness of the lounge in my case, but I've only ever been delayed in departure once through Jetstar, so I consider myself lucky! :)

    • +1

You just have to fly Virgin…did you not redeem your free flight? Not as good as Qantas passes for sure (which can be onsold, or used for International Business Lounges), but still useful for those flying domestically.

      • Yeah I haven't gotten around to redeeming my flight yet; my partner wants to take the same flight with me so if so, we would have to take Virgin together given that my flight will be through Virgin. Before, I also had the Virgin Money Platinum card, which was meant to give me a "two for one" offer but if mine is free, it doesn't really give me any benefit to use it lol

So at this time we are waiting for cheap flights on Virgin…

By the way, do you know how early I have to book in advance for the free flight? Surely they won't just let me call up now and book for tonight…

        • +1

Cheap flights on Virgin are today…think you need to book a week or two out (so long as a saver fare is available).

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:
Ah thanks for that! Unfortunately I'm actually typing this from the USA right now; I'll need to first come back and start stitching up this hole in my wallet before I consider my next domestic holiday plan ;)

  • Does $200k in an account, from sale of a house, count as an income?

    • It's an asset, but not an income.

      • No assett left. Once off income :D

        • Some banks like HSBC's Premier count assets, same with Citibank's Citigold, because you can put it into their savings accounts.

  • I can't find any reference to the Accor Plus program on the Amex site. Anyone can help?

    • +1

It's been removed, but it's till late March. They're working out another agreement right now

      • Hope they will keep Accor Plus as benefits.

They offered Macro Polo Gold previously but removed that benefits early 2015.

    • You can check Accor Plus's own website which will give you full details

If you pay to join here in Australia, it costs around A$300 which will give you a free night of accommodation at your choice at one of their participating hotels. I joined overseas and the fee I paid giving a much better value.

Besides the free night, you can get dining discount. 1 card with 2 persons dining together then you will be entitled to 50% off in most cases. However, some restaurants only offers 20% off, for example, Sofitel So Bangkok.

If you pay to join, you will only be given Silver status for their hotel program. However, if you got it via Amex, you will be given Platinum. With Platinum, you can have free access to the lounge during your stay. The lounge serves free breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails. You can also get free upgrade often. Just got upgraded to club floor with great view at Sofitel So Bangkok last week. I had also been given free fruit baskets on different nights when I stayed at Sofitel Melbourne previously

  • Questions for current holders;

Currently on Citi Prestige but is thinking about getting this purely so I can convert points back to SPG. Citi is good for converting to HH but no SPG option.

    • Does 120,000 / 100,000 bonus points apply to people who have amex already? (I have one corporate amex and one gold amex non-charge card already)
    • VA Lounge. Can Supplementary card holders use it as well without primary card holder? amex website says you have to be a basic card holder.. whatever that means.
    • $200 travel voucher. What do you normally use it on? If you have used it on car rental, was the car rental on a decent rate or a rip off rate?
    • How did you find the redemption of accor hotel through Accor Plus? I heard too many horror stories
    • Accor Plat is definitely on its way out which is a shame especially now that Accor Plat includes lounges in Australian Sofitel & Pullman
    • +2

to my understanding, supp. Cardholder can use its own card to access via lounge.

I used my $200 credit for booking a hotel stay via its website

I have been a Accor Plus for 3-4 years, I always book my free night well in advance so didn't find any problem at all. All those free nights bookings can be cancelled without penalty unless you cancel last mins.

      • Thanks - good to know.

Just on Va lounge again, do they just swipe the card or do you just flash them?

        • Haven't tried yet. May be someone here can help to answer this question

        • Regarding the rates offered at Amex travel , were not the best but you could still save if you use up the full credit

        • +1

They don't swipe the card - they check the boarding pass, but generally only give a passing glance at your Amex.

    • +1

hi superbass, regarding the voucher and accor plus redemption ill tell you what i did. took the missus for 2 dinner dates in the city (Sydney). The first time i stayed at sofitel Sydney using the accor plus redemption. This gave me access to the lounge (free food). I also got around 6 beers for free, some of which were delivered to my room in an ice bucket). For the 2nd date, i booked into radison blu in the city using the 200 voucher (i think i had to pay an additional $30). Because the card comes with a club carlson membership, we were upgraded to the spa suite, which was awesome, biggest hotel room i've ever stayed.

So all this cost me $30. Usually, something like that would cost nearly close to $800 (650 for rooms and 150 in food/drinks).

  • Are most of you guys going for this non-AMEX holders or how are you getting around this: "This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only"?

    • +1

Note that the usual Amex promotion condition applies (people who've held in the previous twelve months excluded), but, like with all recent Amex promotions, this doesn't seem to be enforced at all by Amex.

From the last paragraph of the OP.

    • +2

I got the card a week ago, have now spent about $700, and got the 120k points. I already have a Qantas and a Velocity Amex, even entering the number on the application page. So applying via the referral links seems to be safe to get the points.

  • I think platinum card also come with a free reserve card, which give you a free Virgin flight to Australia or NZ destinations.

    • +1

Yes it does. OP has mentioned that in his summary of the deal. ;)

      • +1

What is the "reserve card" any link to this? Slightly confused on what this product is.

        • +2

Platinum Reserve - a $400 card with a a free domestic/NZ flight or luxury hotel stay. Same points profile as Platinum Charge, and Priority Pass with two visits. Hence it's worth getting for free, just to redeem the flight or hotel stay.

        • I'm failing to see any reference on the amex site to this though. What am I not reading right?

        • @Chimichanga: It's unpublished. But confirmed by all current cardholders.

        • @Chimichanga:

You can no longer apply for the Platinum Reserve card direct. I believe the only way to go get it now is via the Platinum Charge Card..
oh, and being a member of a certain association. Some associations still give you the option to apply for the card, I believe.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: So how does one get it?

        • @ninja33: I sent them a message, and they're sending me an application. You might be able to apply over the phone, too, if you want it soon.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Yep you're right - just got them to send me one too.

        • +1

          @ninja33: I used this(hopefully it works) :-https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7604486/Platinum%20Reserve%20Credit%20Card%20-%20App_Dec%202014%20%281%29.pdf

  • Where are people seeing the 110,000 and 120,000 required for a suite ticket? I did a search on KrisFlyer and from either Sydney or Melbourne (no option from Perth or Brisbane) it is a "one-way First Saver Award ticket" is 132,500.

    • +1

When you select a fare, you'll get a 15% online booking discount.

      • Ahhh, geez that's a good deal then! Purely for the suite.

        • Semi strike that, I continued on with the booking to see what would come up and on a MEL - LHR (London) it was 112,625 KrisFlyer points + AUD$511.51 in taxes! All up, it' still a very good deal but it's now essentially $1711.51 (includes the $1200 annual fee) for a one-way ticket to London…albeit, in a suite!

        • +2

@halfnhalf71: Man, you are hard to please - $1711 for MEL-LHR in a Suite is not a bad deal, isn't it?? :)

        • +2

@bauser99: Yeah it's an awesome deal, which is why i said "Semi strike that" and "…still a very good deal". The only struggle i have is paying all that money for what is a tiny bed when I could have a few nights in a great 5 star hotel at the other end for the same amount. Putting it into perspective i managed to grab one of the $350 return to Japan flights so it's hard to justify all that extra…but when compared to the actual costs of $8,700? It's an amazing deal!

        • +3

          @halfnhalf71:

I agree with you, which is why when it comes to paying high prices for premium class travel, it feels more like a hobby to me rather than something rational.

There are a couple of perspectives (I've posted this/similar stuff quite a number of times but I find it's always an interesting point of discussion):

          • "Using points in Economy class is better/more efficient because you get more flights out of your points." What mindset is this? The "I want to get from A to B for the cheapest price possible" mindset.
          • "I can get business class for only double the points cost, but for the same price in taxes, as compared to having to pay 5-7 times the real cost if I were to pay for a cash ticket." Would you pay the 5-7 times anyway? Probably not. So your saving cannot be benchmarked against the cash cost of a Business Class ticket.
          • If you had to pay for your flight from A to B in cash, you have Airlines A-D that you could pick from. You have points with Airline A. But Airline B is doing a sale (or does price-beat guarantee?). You'll fly with Airline B for that cheaper price. When you benchmark the value of your points for such a situation with Airline A, you'd actually have to benchmark it to the cost of the ticket no Airline B. This only works if you are not picky with your choice of airline though.
          • "I never fly anyway.. what's the point of collecting all these points?" - Well in this case, there is really no point in trying to force this kind of person to accept that flying business class offers better value. They don't even fly anyway. But, hey, you should get the points anyway. Go and get gift cards. That's as close as you can get to obtaining real cash! Either that or sell your points (QFF/VA points) in the Classified section.
          • "Why would I spend the extra X thousand on business class? I can save that money and go shopping, or spend on a 5 star hotel at my destination?" Similar to what you have said. I tend to agree with this, but also understand the thrill that surrounds flying in premium cabins on premium airlines.

You know what. I don't know where I sit anymore…

        • @illumination: Yep, i think you're pretty spot on. I tend to fall into point 3 but step into point 5 and point 1 too, which means i end up collecting points and rarely using them because there are always sales popping up making using my points a bad fiscal choice. Sometimes a business class upgrade is an option but for me but more often than not it'll get me what i see as a glorified exit row seat ((on budget airlines) Scoot, i'm looking at you!) so I tend to pay for the exit row upgrade instead (Air Asia being the exception where you get a flat bed but then i will usually go the Optiontown route anyway). I'm now at the point where i'm probably going to sell my points.

  • I took the 100(120k) points Velocity Platinum card and just cancelled it last week. I see that op says he's had of other kinds. Just want to confirm if anyone else with Velocity Platinum has been approved for this as well. thanks.

    • +2

I currently have Velocity Platinum, after getting the bonus points promo. I also have Qantas Platinum. I got my points in this promo after spending $600 or $700. :)

  • -1

If you are a member of CPA or CA, apply through member's benefit, the annual fee will be $950, save $250 pa.

    • Someone beat you to it above

  • How do I find the various AMex points:FF redemption? I have a feeling that for Emirates it is 4amex:3EK Skywards.

  • oops - read post wrong ! can be deleted

  • Since this is a charge card i gather it does not need mentioning when applying for loans?

    • Of course it needs to be disclosed when applying for a future loan. Just because it has no limit, doesn't mean it's not a potential liability. It'll still appear on your Credit Check, so if you haven't disclosed it, you could create a bigger problem for yourself.

      • Often they only want the total of the credit limits that you have on credit cards. I have a Diners Club, and so there is no credit limit, and so it is impossible to include. But yes, if they want a list of your credit cards, then it could be included, but I don't.

  • Does this fit??

    $1200 for 120,000 points
    ($200) Less $200 Charge Card
    ($100) Less Accor 1 Night Approx $100
($100) Less Travel Card 1 Domestic Flight approx $100
($150) Less 1 Month travel insurance approx $150
    THEREFORE
    $650 FOR 120,000 POINTS

Flight Singapore Airlines Business Class (After july 1st)
    3,601-4,800 Miles Travel - 65,000 points ($2500 approx cost)
    3,601-4,800 Miles Travel - 65,000 points ($2500 approx cost)
    130,000 POINTS

    10,000 point excess

    So therefore $650 + 10,000 points instead of $5000

    correct or incorrect???

    • You mustn't value staying in nice places/flying beyond the Melbourne Sydney route, or using airline lounges.

      • -2

        whatever that means.

could somebody check if this is correct or if i've valued to FF miles correctly

        • Often 'value' is very subjective. I could get 3 hotel nights (Accor free night, Amex $200 travel credit, and Platinum Reserve Luxury hotel) approx $200 value per night - great for staying in Sydney Airport area before early Air Asia flight. I do this already, and so a real saving for me.
120,000 Emirates miles is 2 X Business class flights Bangkok to Sydney. Includes limo to/from Airport each end. Plus Fees approx $300 per trip. -Value $ ?? For me I would happily pay $800 per trip including fees so to me worth $1000 alone.
2 credit cards (1 plus a supplementary card) each with Amex lounge access 'plus guest' and each get Priority Pass Lounge membership + guest. Equates to 4 Amex/PP Lounge memberships.
I love getting 5 star at a 3 star price. If I successfully get this card, then I will consider keeping it. As a frequent flyer I will get value out of it.

        • @peck:

          So you could get;
          (1) 2 business class tickets to parts of asia from sydney
          (2) 3 Nights in hotels
          (3) 1 Years Travel Insurance
          (4) 4 Lounge Passes

for $1200 yearly fee Plus Approx $600 in taxes/fees

        • +1

@mashdra: Pretty much. But the 4 lounge passes are unlimited entries. Not worth it if you fly only a couple of trips per year. Business class is great for overnight flights. Add that to the many other strings in my bow, and I am pretty happy !!

        • @peck:

cool, i agree, if your a FF this deal would be amazing. I was trying to work out if it would be worth it if you only fly once in the year.

Im assuming it still works out cheaper if you usually fly business class anyways.
I usually pay around $1100 round trip with airasia premium seats sydney to KL every year.

If i can get 3 free nights plus free travel insurance it doesn't work out much more to skip the budget airline premium and go to a real airline business class.

        • @mashdra: MAS redemption will cost you a 19190 miles +$162 Syd - Kul Economy, 46750 miles + approx 500 MYR Kul - Syd Business. I am happy enough with Air Asia Syd to Kul (Usually the 'quiet zone' is quite empty), although the MAS times are better for me. I fly AirAsia overnight premium back for the sleep and makes the trip seem faster.

        • @peck:

The economy price you quoted depends on the day. On days with more seats available they charge 19190 milesish, but for days with less seats I've seen it higher (~28000? I think I even saw something 30k+ once).

For the 19k Enrich Miles cost, I think it's pretty cheap unless you are ok to fly the AirAsia flight (timing-wise) and they have one of their $199 one-way sales to KUL. The 19k + $160 taxes doesn't feel worth it if the AirAsia ticket is $199.

I think the Business cost can fluctuate too, but most of the time I've seen it, it's been about that price (~46k). In my opinion, the Business is only worth it if the Economy is 28k+.. but this will come back to how much you value Business class vs Economy class.

        • @illumination: Very true. And if AirAsia has a 'super sale' you may jag Syd - Kul ~ $169, if willing to book 13 months in advance.

  • I'm wanting to book a Virgin domestic return flight from PER-MEL soon (like that one that comes with this or the Platinum Edge card). If anyone would like to sell theirs, please send me a message.

    Cheers

    • Check the classified section for people selling. Comes up quite often.

  • Is it a once off 100,000 points? or do you get them each year?

either way it seems like a great deal!

    • Once off. Also, it's 120,000 if you use a referral link (as in the OP - you just select the username of an Ozbargainer to get the referral bonus).

  • Can someone point out where amex mentions the free platinum edge card?

    • I can't find the reference either, but it's the Platinum Reserve Card (not the Platinum Edge)

    • It's unpublished. You have to call to get it (once you've activated your charge card).

  • Just got approved. When do I get the points ?

    • +2

Once you've spent $1k..though, in my case, it was more like $600/700.

  • This is very compelling - but I'm curious: How likely is it that I could redeem points for a biz (or 1st) class flight to Europe in peak times (i.e. July)? Do you need to book a year in advance like QFF award redemptions?

I tend to travel on short notice, but my dates / time / start / end locations are very flexible.

    • +1

Very short notice is often quite decent, as they have premium seats they were looking to fill. Most others you need a few months to get the best flights (i.e. A380s, being better than 777s), but still generally OK.

It's only the USA flights that such for availability - and that's across the board (Virgin, Qantas, AAdvantage - you name it).

  • Can someone help me to "Realise the potential…" see what I did there ;D

OK, so I am planning to go to Europe this year but have already booked ALL my flights (got a really good deal).

Given the $1,200 annual fee is pretty high, it is just enough cash rewards ($1,200) to pay off the first annual fee and then cancel the card. Does anyone know what else the points can be used to redeem for of equal or higher value than flights as it seems the only truly worthwhile gain from Amex points is frequent flyer points, right?

Of course, there are the other minor benefits that come with this program but I just don't see the value unless your a regular traveller who spends a lot.

    • If you use the points to offset the fees/purchases, you'd come up $270 odd short.
IMO the benefits are worth easily more than that: you'll be able to use the lounges in Europe with Priority Pass, free hotel in Australia, free return flight in Australia (with your companion Platinum Reserve card - can also use Virgin Lounge when using this) - or could sell it for $300-400, and $200 travel credit (can spend on hotels in Europe).

  • I received conditional approval immediately, but then had to supply income documents. Now I am sweating off on formal approval. I realise that most did not have to provide income docs, but wondering how long it took for full approval and how was this advised? (Email/snail mail?)

  • Anyone know how long it takes to get a priority pass card?

I signed up for the Amex card, and it says 10 days to get the card in the mail. I leave for vegas in 21 days, hoping to get it by then.

    • +2

Going to be touch and go for you I think…once you get your Amex, you call them and they'll order your PP cards (they'll do it for the supp at the same time). They quoted me 2-3 weeks, it's now a week for me, so I'm not sure if it'll be there on time. Let them know your plans, they may be able to expedite it/get it sent priority mail etc. Also, if your account is set up when you're travelling, you could try calling PP to get online access to your account. From there you can log in to the PP app on your phone, which can then be scanned for access.

      Good luck.

p.s. also note you'd have access o the Amex Centurion lounge at McCarran with your Platinum Charge - so long as you can get into the right terminal.

      • Thanks for the info mate. The Amex card will get me into the Delta lounge at LAX and Centurion lounge at McCarran for my domestic flights, Its just the return flight from LAX (flight leaves just after midnight) where there is only a Qantas, AirNZ and KAL lounge in the international terminal.

Ohh well, might have to ruff it for one part of the flight. Ill let you know how I go about getting a PP app access. I noted on the PP site it says "Please note that if you receive your Priority Pass Membership from a financial institution you may not be able to access a Digital Membership Card", so fingers crossed.

        • +1

I've had no problem signing up my Westpac and Citibank accounts to the app.

        • I just got my card today - so ordered it last Tuesday, arrived now. You should be good.

    • Vegas has a nice Amex lounge.

If you can get to that terminal it will be nicer than the priority pass lounges and just requires you to show your Amex card.

  • Hi guys, I've been using Amex Plat Charge for almost a year now and looking to cancel the card before it hits the first anniversary.

However, I would like to know what would happen to all my hotel program membership upgrades (ie SPG gold, Accor Plat and Club Carson Gold) and even the priority Pass membership. Would they downgrade me straightway and cancel my PP membership upon my card cancellation? Just curious to know since all these upgrades and perks are tied up to the Amex card.

    Thank you for any advice!

  • +1

Thanks OP. Expect to get 20,000 points soon ;)

  • +2

Thanks OP for posting the deal, I had 5 o/s trips booked for this year (including 3 weeks Europe)so This card is valuable and worth to get .
Just got approved for the card using your referral. Hope you get your referral bonus soon.

  • +1

Are they still offering platinum reserve card free with platinum charge card? Anyone who recently got their card, were you able to order one?

    • It's apparently unlisted, if you want one you need to call AMEX and they'll send you out the form to apply for it.

  • If I subsequently cancel the Platinum Charge, can I still keep the Platinum Reserve with no ongoing annual fees?

    • Does anyone know the answer for this?

      • Sounds 'Pie in the Sky' to me !

  • +1

Thanks OP, just submitted my application but did not say it was immediately approved. Hopefully it will and you'll get another 20k points for your help! :)

    • Good luck. Mine took a few days before I received the approval text.

      • That's weird. I still haven't got an approval text nor letter in the mail, but my wife did get her supplementary card and we were able to activate it fine just now. I guess that means it's approved right?
