  • That's the best price I've seen for an ipod touch. Although I'd never get an iphone and I'm not an Apple fan, I bought a family member an ipod touch and I was really, really impressed with it.

  • -2

Could be a cheap (very) low powered webserver and seedbox, hmmm.

    • +2

Interesting thought but a barebones Atom mini ITX would be similar price and significantly faster.

    • +4

Loving my ipod touch, but really a webserver and seedbox??? You better find another reason to tell your wife or mum why you MUST have one of these.. LOL

      • OZPETE - LOL
Thats what I'm now dealing with my wife…
Can you provide any good tip?

        • Compare the cost of her engagement ring to it…

        • Well depends on circumstances, with "tripview" you can have all the sydney train/bus and ferry timetables, so now you wont miss the train home… Bris has one and I think Melb has one as well.

Guess I have got past the Wifey thing by agreeing she has some annual discretionary fund - which she can use without justification, while I have mine. GOOD luck…. They are great little units - probably use as much as my PC

  • -3

Great price for almost 2yrs old tech.
but then again , the next model won't be out till Sep. 2010

    • 1 year. next model says who? september is 6 months away.

      • 8GB was released in September 2008, and has not been updated since, so a little more than a year.

  • -3

Seems to getting better although this still holds me back

    Battery life About 4 hours
    (2-hour fast charge to 80%)

A 2 hour fast charge only to 80 % wtf you have to wait 2 hours and you only get 80% battery life , i know i am asking for too much as 4 hours is pretty good for battery life i am not that patient afterall.

Makes me wonder how is the normal/slow charge a month ?

    • +6

      battery-life ? think you mean … charge-time ?
      * Fast-charge time: about 2 hours (charges up to 80% of battery capacity)
      * Full-charge time: about 4 hours

      Playback time
      * Music playback time: Up to 30 hours when fully charged
      * Video playback time: Up to 6 hours when fully charged

      that's pretty acceptable … amongst PMP's anyways

    • I use mine daily on a train commute, and often only have to charge after a few weeks if just listening to music.

Do yourself a favor and ditch the crappy ipod earplugs and get some good ones like mm50 sennheiser for about 25 bucks on Ebay. Trust me they are the difference of a Hyundai Excel to a Ferrari. - yes that much difference! :)

  • -2

Better still run into Officeworks to get it for 5% cheaper OR $1 cheaper if they know about this deal

    • If they know about this deal (and I assume they will), it'll be the same price, not $1 cheaper.

      • No last time it was $1 cheaper as they say they will be the cheapest.

        • Equal cheapest is still the cheapest.

    • +4

Who would bother annoying the staff for a $1. Get some prospective.

    • Isn't $199 - 5% about $10 off , not $1?

      • Yeah, he's saying they'll drop their ticket price lower than DSEs.. But I'd imagine they'll just match it.

  • Mmm tempting… very tempted to get one of these purely as a Windows Media Centre/iTunes remote for my home theatre.

  • Oh my! What a great deal!

  • Already got the iphone 3G, still not sure if it's useful. But it's the best itouch offer i've seen.

  • You can load skype on these things right? And also google voice?

    • Apple the fascists blocked (or as their PR spin puts it, 'didn't approve') Google Voice from App Store. However apparently the webapp is pretty impressive (for which Apple has no control over).

Or you could jailbreak the thing and use one of the GV clients availble in Cydia/Rock.

      Skype is in App Store.

  • I think it good deal. Quite nice looking device it is.

Maybe I buy! I love APPLE goods!

  • What a great deal…no one has mentioned OW yet???

Perfect for my wife, but I'm going to be greedy, and wait for you wonderful Oz Bargainers to find me a 32gb deal!

  • Officeworks will beat it by 5%

    • +1

Yes, went to OW and they were ready to do it. But then they checked their stock and said none in store. For all I know that could be just lying… Anyway, The Good Guys beat it by $1, so $198 from there. Damn this ozbargain, costing me more and more money.

      • Hmmm, any thoughts on how I'm going to get a cheap 32gb anyone?

I'm in WA, and the best I have found is $377.00 in Retravision catalogue, so I guess if I take that to OW I get it for $358.15??

        • The larger models are very rarely on promotion.. Simply because they're not nearly as popular as the 8gb models.

I know it's not really the answer you're looking for, but that's the unfortunate reality of it. You can knock off a few bucks getting a grey import, if that's what you're into.

          • @pais: i still dont like the fact that apple products does not have external slot for memory… 8gb is not enough for me for mp3s videos and games…

      • Damn this ozbargain, costing me more and more money. - LOL sorry no refunds here….

  • People should know this before purchasing the 8GB model.

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/09/updated-8gb-ipod-t…

    • thats a good read i didnt know that , thanks

    • +1

      Interesting, but not surprising…..

IMO if you want good games or graphics, buy an xbox or PS3.
These 199 jobbies are great for music, video, and catchy little games that would run on your old C64.

      • A little "exagerrated" on the c64 bit, some of the games are great - and haven't noticed the graphics issue mentioned above, probably an issue with shooter network games, but car racing and one on one, movies, TV all is fine. And I;'m yet to find out how to put that pesky xbox into the palm of my hand, and that darn power cord keeps getting tangled in the automatic train door closer…..

        • Neither have I. Mine is still great for 90% of the games that I bought in the App Store. I bought a refurbished 16GB for $280. Not a bad price. But this price is even than 8GB refurbished: http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod/ipod…

        • ok mr smarty pants, pretty obvious that I know this.

What I am saying is that if you want good games with brilliant graphics, an Ipod is not up to task 32gb or 8gb makes little difference.

This is MY OPINION, and some people do like the games on these, im just not thrilled at all, hey I even have trouble enjoying some of the PS3 titles that get rave reviews, let alone handheld gimmick games……

I can argue for hours about this, but in the end, we will just both have a different opinion.

The touch is the best MP3/MP4 player I have ever used, and for that I think this is a good device at a good price :)

  • I had a 8GB iPod Touch and it worked a treat. 100% smooth. Awesome little gadget. So much so, that I upgraded to the 32GB iPhone 3GS and this thing is so buggy I wish I had my iPod Touch back!

Be prepared to become a slave to the iTunes specials once you get one of these though! :D

  • Okay..can u help me with plain and simple jailbreak procedure. I know iclarified But not sure which tutorial should I follow? (Link removed see below)

    • Manobik - unfortunately, this is not the site for that type of discussion. Use Google, but not ozbargain. Thanks

  • Bought a 2 x 32gb today from OW on a price match from Expert Infotech for $339.00 each!
    Bargain!

  • Officeworks in Perth now matched ticketed price and is also now $199.00 (saw at Jandakot store).

  • I bought mine from O.W for $193 last month.

    • realy? howd you get that price?

  • Tried to get a price match from Jb Hi-Fi Westfield Bondi Junction, the guy over there would not do a price match. He said he was the Manager of the department and would not do a price match. He told his other colleagues not to give me at that price.Stupid and arrogant, had no sense of customer service. So went two floor up and bought from DSE instead.

    • Unfortunately, I doubt he'd care at that you went to DSE and he lost your business. He would've been selling it below cost.

    • +4

How about just going to Dick Smith and giving your business to the company that is offering the good deal in the first place?

How is losing money good "customer service"? Seriously, I'm always dumbfounded that people think the term "customer service" means "Bend over backwards, grab your ankles and grit your teeth"

      • +1

        agree 100%

  • I went to purchase 15 from Office Works Wollongong today, hoping for a price beat.

They said they could not do it, as they had lowered their ticketed price to $199…still got them anyhow as it was a good deal…

    Sam.

    • +4

15? That's odd. I usually buy mine in lots of 20.

    • So that's why they were low on stock. Saw the Ticket $199, so went to Dick Smith since noone would beat the price, only match it.

    • What are you going to do with 15 Ipod Touches???

      Resell?

      • They're for a primary school i work with, they will be using them for learning languages….lucky kids :-)

        • Darn kids are getting more freebie tech gear from the govt/schols than all my Christmases put together! I wonder if they'll focus to learn anything with all the tempting distractions ;-)

  • I own the 32gb model. I had to think of a reason to buy one then I remembered mothers day is in May.

  • Perfect timing, my mp3 player screwed up. :)

  • I'm torn on this one.
I went out and bought an iPod 8gb recently - and in a way, I regret the purchase. Here's why.

    1. They certainly run slower than current generation 16gb and 32gb iPod Touch
    2. They're tethered, so you can't unlock them properly

If you know how restrictive the iPod Touch/iPhones are, you'll know why you want to unlock them. There are lots of good/free apps that Apple "deems" unsuitable - that are not available unless you "unlock" the iPod touch. I am also annoyed that you need to enter your credit card to use the damn things… Apple has some policies that I strongly object to.

If you love Apple/iPod Touch, I would steer clear of 8gb models regardless of the price - and go for either 16gb or 32gb.
Make sure you avoid the "MC" models (ie. where "MC" appears in the serial number on the back of the units.

This doesn't stop this purchase being a bargain, if you're willing to accept the limitations.

    DeWalt

    • What's wrong with MC? The one I bought from Dick Smith is model: MC086ZP, firmware: 3.1.3 (7E18).

      • +1

MC designation basically just means it's 3rd generation iPod Touch. And that in turn means it is harder to jailbreak. MC + 3.1.3FW = no jailbreak. At least at the moment, that's my understanding. Please correct me if I am wrong, would love to jailbreak my new toy.

    • +2

You are not obliged to enter your credit card details to use any Apple device.

If you want to buy music/apps without a credit card, you can use iTunes Cards, often available at a discount.

    • +1

providing credit card info is not mandatory. See @ http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534

  • Finally got one from officeworks, after visiting 4 dickys and tandys who all "just sold out".

The missus only wants basic functionality - Ill wait for a cheap 32GB model.

Main problem with it is her 64bit Win7 wont sync the ipod. Even apple seemed to have a screwed up download and installation, installs as an x86 app. Seems to be a common problem, and apple support are next to useless fixing it. Oh well, just had to sync it on my XP box.

  • Thanks for the heads-up. Bought one in Brisbane on Saturday. What an excellent device! (and at a good price too)

  • I got an Ipod Touch 2nd generation, model number A1288.

Is this a bad thing? Should i go back and ask for a third generation, since that's the model number indicated on the website?

    • There is no 3rd generation 8GB touch. There is a 3rd gen in the 32 and 64GB, but not the 8GB.

The only issue to worry about is some can be "hacked" and newer ones can't. Is this an issue for you? If not don't worry about anything.

      • Yeah. But on the DSE website it clearly states 'Generation 3' under specifications and the model number as MC086ZP/A. Mine is A1288, which i googled and is a 2nd generation.

I realise that the so called '3rd generation' is effectively a rebranded 2nd gen since all the hardware is the same. BUT surely Apple would change something. I hear that the 3rd gen might have a lockdown FM transmitter, and Wireless N which may get released down the track.

What are people's take on this? Have i been duped by DSE, since they sold me an item that wasnt the one advertised (even though there appears to be no difference… it is still a different product!). I dont plan to 'jailbreak' or do anything illegal to it, so should i go back and get myself the newer generation just in case. Also, i put my screen protector on it… are DSE entitled to give me a new screen protector since i cannot reuse this one.

Since the promotion is over, id be pissed if DSE only gave me my money back and not a proper iPod Touch. Gah, what do i do?

        • +1

Don't read rumour sites. They've been going on about these "hidden" fm transmitters for years. Why hide a transmitter? Why not enable it? It wouldn't be very Apple to put that in an iPod anyway because Fm transmitters are rubbish.

There is no 3rd gen 8GB, end of story. The only way there is a 3rd gen 8GB is in the marketing sense.

          • @[Deactivated]: Well they did hide the bluetooth function in ipod touches and only just recently enabled it with a firmware update.

            • @Pixus: Good point. I still have no doubt there is NOT a FM transmitter in an iPod product :P

  • The day Apple puts an expandable memory card slot in these, is the day I'll consider buying one.
I really love these devices but Apple's use of soldered-in memory chips makes certain that these have a limited lifespan.
Apple's prices as the memory increases across the range 8/16/32Gb are just mental.

    • They're a bit pricey, but not exactly "mental". 32/64GB of memory is expensive wherever you buy it. And I'd love to see a better option for a media player…but it doesn't exist.

  • Got mine pricematched from kmart cause dick smith didn't have any left. Still not used to the touch keypad yet. Can confirm my model number is mc

  • +1

Bear in mind that there are two generations of iPod Touch:

    • 8GB is the 2008 Model
    • 32/64 are the 2009 model.

The 2009 model has a faster processor (allegedly). More importantly, the 2008 model does not support some of the upcoming iPhone OS 4.0 features like multitasking.
