What Is Your DREAM Job (and Do You Have It?)

What is yours and do you have it?

Are you now/ever planning on working into your dream?

I studied Maths but my dream job is to work in Fashion - Couture specifically. That doesn't exist in Australia so the closest to that - Bridal.
Trying to get into that. WISH ME LUCK :)

What is yours?

    Happy -ish

  • People with "dream jobs" are so lucky. I've never had a dream job. I've had goals I've wanted to achieve. Cure all diseases. Create world unity. Improve quality of life for everyone. But never a dream job. I actually have a fear of being in a situation where I will focus on the same thing day in and day out.

Though from my experience I wouldn't want to be some of those people I know who say they achieved their dream jobs. The ones who work in business, consulting and finance don't look as happy as one would expect from someone who claims to be happy. And to be honest they generally seem detached from humanity in everyday conversation.

The saddest cases I know are those who dreamed of working for charities. And social workers. I know several idealists who landed their dream jobs but couldn't stand "the system" and its ineptitude and just quit.

Working towards a dream can be more inspiring than achieving one.

    • I think it depends on the person. I know quite a few people in Finance who absolutely love it. My roommates are IBers and absolutely love it. Are there downsides? Sure. Just like every job but they don't want to do anything else.
I know someone who dreamed of working in Law, does, and loves it.

That said, I know people on the opposite, who were rejected from what was their dream and ended up loving their plan B.

I agree about the charity case. That is really sad. Everyone hates "the system" of everywhere. Artists complain it's a business and not about Art or Music or whatever. But that's life.

    • How about achievable goals? Like cure one disease. Or even reduce the impact of a disease by 5%.

I don't believe in maxims. You don't want unity and quality of life for everyone. No challenges, no differences, no inequalities means no progress. It's like a warm death of the universe where entropy has reached it's maximum and no more work can be produced.

    • Me tooo!!. I could never visualise a "dream job" for myself. There are so much you want to do but sometimes i got the fear of failing so bad - having failed a few major things in my life. I really dont know how one could find a very specific job to be their dream job since most of the time they do not really know what it is about until digging deep into it?

I too wish i can contribute something toward the well being of others or planet but as an accountant, i dont know where to start. Besides, if you are on a stable (but boring) path way, would you be able to find courage to give it up?

It is so sad when ppl who actually care failed because they are somehow minority in this world…

      • Excel if simple, ibm software if we need cubes of data

        • Same same. I use Excel too. Never used IBM software before. Will have to look into that. Thank you!

    • Very interesting field you are working on right now. May i ask how can one get into that? I do some financial modelling myself but not too complicated ones and most of the time is self taught so i dont know if it will get me where i want to be next

      • Most direct way would be a qualification in finance or statistics then working in risk management (e.g. Consulting firm, bank or corporate) and demonstrating your skills / learning from others

  • Maybe not my dream job, but very happy with what I do, I source and restore vintage computers and hifi gear for clients. Deal with very interesting people from many backgrounds from crazy collectors to quite a few very high ups in tech companies.

It's always interesting because there's always something new to discover, or something to find for a client. Also deal with a lot of vintage electronics, which is always a challenge and a great learning experience.

Work from home, so people come to me, and everyone loves to peek in my workshop.

Have an eBay store which can be a bit demanding at times, but it lets us explore our interests and have a conduit to offload them. Wether it be LEGO, collectible designer furniture, olympic torches or calculators, whatever it is we can do it.

Downsides, what you put in is what you get out of it. I can be lazy if I want, but bills still need to be paid.

excuse the ignorance, but WTF is a Doctor doing browsing OzBargain looking to save 20% of an iTunes card or getting a Free Condom sample?
Don't you guys 'average' around 300K+ / year? ditto for the IBs?

Many people have worked out that you arent accountable for the lies and half truths you tell on internet forums

        I disagree.
Everyone wants to save money. My family has lots of money. We still collect the fly buys barcode things, the 4 cent petrol vouchers, roll toothpaste tubes up. All the cliches.

Also, for many of these jobs there is little job security. You may earn $150k at 27 but if you start to lower your performance GOOD BYE. Then what? If you didn't learn how to save your money you are done.

As for people lying, that's sad. Why lie? If anything shouldn't you be MORE honest? I have disclosed more on here than I have to people i know in real life.

        • +1

What do you mean by "lots of money" if your family are millionaires, not celebrity-type, but just rich and you still roll toothpaste and collect shop-a-dockets, I really and genuinely feel sorry for you.

According to you, you're a prodigy mathematician who was offered an Investment Banker role, however also an extremely hot swimsuit model that's double-majored in mathematics and 4 other subjects.

You know the old saying…I gotta see it to believe it.

90% of the crap here is BS.
I only believe the guys that are saying they're bakers, cleaners, truck drivers, software dveelopers, etc

        • @frostman:

Honestly, I truly don't care what you think. It's how I was raised.

I'm not a prodigy mathematician. I guess you don't understand maths at University.
I double majored. As do most students…..
And what's with the 4 other subjects? I did 2 degrees - one undergraduate, one postgraduate. What's so hard to understand about that. That means you can do 4 majors…..

          These things aren't that extraordinary.

How can I prove it to you? I'm more than happy to.

          Edit -
          What i have said
          1. I model
          2. I studied a postgraduate degree with 2 majors

          one for me is enough

        • Do you earn $150k at 27? I don't know a single 27 year old who earns above 90k (most people I know are 27/28). Also anyone can claim they are a model, which agency Chadwicks? I studied 4 unit maths at a selective school then completed bachelor of Commerce with double major in finance/business law and have studied a masters of finance (both at a reputable top five university). There is no 'double major' offered in my postgraduate degree. Which university did you attend? In most highly specialised roles looks don't really count for much, so pinning all your future with how you are seen sexually is a bit rich.

I can't believe your family feeds into the 4 cents a litre shopadocket scam. Most United outlets and independents routinely offer prices equating the 'discounted' price and it just encourages a monopoly of servos which will in the long term lead prices to go up (as people flock to the 'discount' service stations to get a supposed deal - the ol' "Dick Smith 20% off liquidation sale!" trick).

Also I have been homeless in and out of crisis accommodation, street missions and car garages as well as spending nights in headlands. "And then what? If you didn't learn how to save your money you are done". Unless you have kids yourself and other dependants don't grow attached to your material comforts enjoy life while you are making the big bucks. A person browsing ozbargain with purchasing power of 150k income, 40k of which is purely disposable is in a lot different position to those who survive on 30k, 7k of which is purely disposable on things other than rent, bills and food. To equate the mindset of the two is wrong and insulting. I know if I started earning 150k I would not be wasting time habitually browsing ozbargain for dominos' vouchers and discounted small goods (but to each their own). I would be earning at least 80-100 pH and not thinking about saving five dollars at a fast food outlet. Logically The half hour I spend on ozbargain would be worth more to me and each day that time adds up to more savings I could ever find browsing this site. As it is my half hour is worth about $5-7 and I have found discounts most months which have saved me over $100 a refurbished laptop (for example) in the past. Logically it is probably not intelligent to browse ozbargain each day, I am probably am idiot to waste time but I am poor and desperate for a discounted bargain. I really don't understand why those with superior earning power waste their time, unless they get a kick from the forum or community aspect to it. I don't buy into the "I'm afraid of losing it all at 27" argument.

        • +2

          @juzz0:

I'm younger than 25 so clearly am not 27.
IB grads are $102k/year Aud in Australia. But if you work in Asia it's paid in local currency so depending on the exchange rate it varies.

I've been with chic and IMG.

I didn't do a master of finance. I PMed you my course.

As for pinning everything on looks. You must have totally misunderstood my post.

People can spend their time as they want. I think people who eat dominos are stupid but it doesn't affect me. Move on seriously.

Money - I don't understand your point. I already shared my bank statement with 2 members but if you don't want to believe I have money that's your prerogative.
Why we do bargains? My family was in the war so yes they have lost everything and had to re-earn it. It's hard to change that mentality. Oh and I'm Jewish. So you can insert some stereotype if you like.

          I'm not proving anything else.
I shared me marks, my course, my finances. Get over it. Believe me or not. I'm done. My life won't change if "juzzo 0" on oz bargain doesn't believe me. That' would be pathetic. Life is unfair as you know.

The point of this thread was about dream jobs not about attacking people who may/may not have been offered your dream or calling those in perhaps lucrative fields ungrateful.

        • @juzz0:

On the other hand a hell of a lot people I know are earning 90k plus at that age group. Any decent professional will surpass 90k if they put in a bit of work

        • @ggkfc:not true mate. You might know a lot of successful ppl but they dont present the population. If ppl can just put some effort and then they can earn 90+ at 27-28, then they should be earning 150k when they are 35?

I talked to some graduate recently, apparently most of them get paid really well so they think everybody is the same. Well, think again.

        • @clgt:

Guess there is a bias to my comment. For specialties, they will of course surpass 150k by 35.
But there is always things like kids that make people take detours in their lives.

          *Note: non finance field

        • @ggkfc:haha does that imply that it is hard to get to that income if you work in finance? I am in that field sadly

        • @clgt:
nup, i just dont know that field so cant make a comment on it lol!

just because they earn 6 figures doesn't mean they aren't an ozbargainer ~

just means they buy a $1000 itunes card for $800 instead

      • You missed the turn…go back

I didn't say people in the top 10% pay (300K +) dont buy bargains when things are discounted.

I meant, will they actually sign up to OZB and trawl for coupons and deals to save a few dollars

        • nah not trawling, I'm on Ozb to see daily highlight deal, if it's what I think I'll need I'll get it. Or just being an informed consumer, like what price range is a 40" FHD TV since these deals are good indicator of how the market is.

        • 300k + equates to nothing after tax and if the sole breadwinner of a household of 5+1. So yeah ozbargaining.

Maybe $1mil+ would be a different story.

      • Earning 6 figures isn't that much

Your right, but your taking a logical approach to it. As you may have encountered once or twice before, people are not logical.
For many people on this site and in general, money-saving behavior arises from more primitive impulses. So when Beethovens parents are scraping the insides of the peanut butter jar, spending 5 minutes trying to get to that last 20g of peanut bar to spread on their toasties, time worth more than the entire jar, its not the result of a logical chain of thought. Rather, it is the product of a mental illness, a routine created with a veneer of logicality which gives the impression that it an intelligent course of action, when really its main purpose is to give a feeling of safety and reduce brain strain.

What, you thought having a 99.5+ TER score guaranteed smart decisions? Sorry to break it to you, it doesn't. Plenty of highly intelligent, dumb people running around.

"The Internet’s Most Internet scenario." - person 1 makes a rudimentary grammar mistake—“Your right”—person 2 indicates that he or she is maybe not the best person to judge the merits of a given opinion or how intelligent the holder of that opinion is.

          Such an internet cliche

edit: I'll add that Thornton is pretty spot on with his comment. Thinking Fast and Slow is a great book by Daniel Kahnemann illustrating how people really do not think logically or statistically. Or you could watch his TED talk if reading a book takes too much of your time.

      • Thanks for the mental analysis of my 2 sentence comment.
I will say my family was in the war so had to re-earn all the money.
Also I'm Jewish so stereotype there
And Mark Zuckerberg famously checks his bills. Why does it become a mental illness when you pass a certain income threshold? But whatever.

        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mark-zuckerberg/929745…

The point of this thread was about dream jobs.

        • Your welcome :-)

Its the basis of our system of money. No doubt you've heard the phrase 'time is money' before. Its smart when you trade time for more money than that time is worth. Its dumb when you trade it for less, and lowers the standard of living for not only you, but all those that could profit from your waste.

It can get pretty crazy towards the higher end however. Take Mark Zuckerberg for instance. He has a net worth of around 30 billion dollars. Lets say he is a bad investor, and gets a meager 1% interest on those holdings per year. Thats still 300 million, annually. Lets also assume he works harder than most, 100 hours a week, 50 weeks a year. That puts his hourly income at 60K. Every minute is worth a grand. If he spends 30 seconds checking a bill, and notices they've double charged him on a $50 glass of scotch, he's saved $50, but spent $500 to get that saving. Not the smartest choice.
But he wasn't born weathy, so its not a surprise he hasn't adapted to the lifestyle.

Your parents can still do the flybuys/petrol voucher thing if they're weathy, but as it doesn't save them money but costs it, its more appropriate to class it as a recreational activity :P
I wasn't having a dig at you btw. My reply was to frostman. God knows I'm guilty of the above just as much as anyone else, but its something I'm trying to work on.

        • In your example, the $500 comes from interest not labour. So with the saving he has earned $550 and not cost anything. Likewise the example with parents using petrol coupons is incorrect. Unless every hour would otherwise be spent working, there is not an incremental cost to saving

We lose few clients as most are happy with the service we provide and we charge less than the average advising firm. If you keep on trying to get new clients/sales, you just don't have the time to service your existing clients and they will leave.
