What Is Your DREAM Job (and Do You Have It?)

What is yours and do you have it?

Are you now/ever planning on working into your dream?

I studied Maths but my dream job is to work in Fashion - Couture specifically. That doesn't exist in Australia so the closest to that - Bridal.
Trying to get into that. WISH ME LUCK :)

What is yours?

Worked as an equity trader - not that fun, the world thinks everyone who works in the field are like the traders they see from Wolf of Wall St making the big $$$ …sometimes it can be quite far from it.

      • What was bad about it, maybe if you tell me about it I will enjoy my Adelaide life where there are no equity trading positions a bit more

Your life is constantly connected to the world market - Asian market > European market > US market > Asian market. It's constant loop as you have to be aware how the world markets are doing.

Depending if you are working on the BUY or SELL side, you more or less work on a commission based salary so you will have to drive up sales or drive in commission one way or another. It can be long long hours depending on your firm and your position (Intern dies at G/S from overworking http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jun/17/goldman-sach…)

It's a high pressure environment so simple lapse of concentration and do a fat finger, you can see yourself pack up your stuff and get walked out the door. Rule of thumb is if your error position is greater than your pay packet then it's goodbye.

        • @timmeh15:

But don't you find it interested how all the markets connect, would you say that the stress is worth the pay packet?

          @strikerzebra:

It's too much BS on the market these day with market manipulation happening right, left & center, there're no real catalysts for market movements anymore. Computer and algo tradings are slowly taking over from the traditional traders, wouldn't be surprised if equity traders are made redundant in 10 years time.

        • @strikerzebra:

My roommates do similar work so I will partly answer this for you in the interim.
          For some - yes
          For others - no

Many IB graduates quit/get fired before 30. It is SO intense, competitive and mentally/emotionally draining.
Moreover, let's say you are 28 earning $xk/year. You are working constantly so barely have the time to even spend it. It's like having countless gift cards you can never actually enjoy.

My roommates are 25 earning approximately $100k/year in Asia (they are paid in HKD and SGD so it depends on the exchange rate) and NEVER have free time. We Skype at 2am their time frequently. They returned recently for a trip and spent 99% of the time sleeping or sitting on the street staring at people relax. Their entire life experience is warped.

      • THANK YOU!!!

Oh my gosh you know what you are talking about (I read your other post).
People have no idea about that type of work and think it's just easy money. Lol if it was so easy why are so many crazily intelligent people burning out and dying as you say?

Pros - FASCINATING work, training, teamwork etc…….then money.
        Cons - manipulation, stress, competition…..

      • my aim is not to trade on big wall street but trade/invest small scale personally. don't need much $ but just enough to live which i had been doing part time. been trading IPO/RTO and some options lately. been managing funds before… my short term trade takes conviction and months to close out so no don't glue yourself to the screen. and no don't do it for the sake of money. i just enjoying researching company. more of a FA person than TA. there's a difference btw day trading which every second counts. trade for youself, not some big soulless wall street…

Dream job: Designing and fabricating my own custom car parts, both cosmetic and performance wise.

Nope however currently studying a related course and am almost done.

    Current: Burger flipper/student

    • Its not that great. In reality it takes a lot of time and mostly turns out aerospace or military spec but you cant charge big bucks for it.

Then for some prick to send it to china and just copy it.

I still do stuff for my own, for mates i just tell them what to do. I dont even bother for shops anymore.

To be successful you need to know mech eng, design, production, marketing etc. Then there are lesser extents like metallurgy and physics.

Sorry dont know about cosmetic stuff, that shits for ricers

If it's something you really want to do you need to start part time work now in a relevant industry/studies. Also helps if you have some weird brain that allows you to absorb this stuff, be self taught and apply.

They say the brain of a child is like a sponge, its not true as it continues well into adult hood. Probleem is adults choose to stop learning or life just means they are too busy/tired.

  • Dream Job: Video Game Developer
    Current Job: Web\SharePoint Developer

    • I have to ask… do you love Sharepoint?

      • Yes I really do…awsome technology

        • You're the first to say that. It's powerful, but the backend is so tedious and frustrating.

        • @Clear:

Thats why The sharePoint fellows are paid better than the others..

        • @oliman: Yup. A few years back I worked with certain government department that would pay big money to contractors to manage and develop their 2010 Sharepoint intranet. Perhaps I should have gone into that industry.

    • Have you done much videogame dev in your spare time? Plenty of room for small indie projects on the market, these days.

      • I think you added some extra words by mistake:

Plenty of small indie projects on the market, these days.

  • Dream job: Financial analyst or anything that requires deeper understanding of financial statements and economic conditions
    Current job: Accountant

I guess I'm getting there slowly?

    • Enrol in the CFA program. It's rigorous yet deeply insightful and explores financial statement analysis and macro/micro economics.

      • I have actually considered to do the CFA program.

My planned pathway is as follows:

        1. Graduate from university (6 months remaining)
        2. Work in a public practice accounting firm for 3ish years
        3. Complete the CA program
        4. Move into corporate commercial banking
        5. Complete the CFA program
        6. Retire a happy man
        • +1

I love your plan. I was like that for one of the countless dream jobs i had.
          B. Commerce Accounting and Finance?

        • @Beethoven: Correct! The best of both worlds.

        • +2

Just a heads up, the CFA is no cake-walk. The CA program is a walk in the park compared to it. I've done both and I barely saw the civilised world whilst studying for the CFA.

        • @Shamdog: I've always been a high achieving student thus far, so I am familiar with not seeing daylight during tough times. I have heard of the difficulty of the CFA, and I'm not scared to hit it head on someday. Obviously, it may be a different story in the future when I'm juggling family, bills, mortgage, work, and every other problem in life.

But obviously being studious did come with some negative traits, such as I do not network and socialise as much as I should be, and instead I'm on OzBargain.

    • PM-ed you.

    • I graduated from accounting and finance as an international student but never got a chance to get into this industry, good luck!

      • Do you have any other experience or substantial clubs activity though? If you do with a good result, it's fairly harsh I gotta say

        • Not at all, it's extremely hard for international students to get internships in relevant industry at the time, but it makes sense, why would a local firm want to train you if your future residency is not confirmed?

        • @ltq19900310: i was an international student - not a high achiving one and i did not have my permanent residency while trying to get a job. Hence, it was really a struggle at first. But I believe if you are patient enough you will get there. I know many ppl who gave up and it is really sad. If you are in your early 20s, you have no excuse man, try some more and one day your luck will come :). It took me a year to find my first job, another year to move out off that entry level role, 2.5 years more to be an analyst, i am still struggle to make something out of it but keep moving on. Hopefully one day it will get me where i want to. I dont really enjoy accounting & finance btw :)) finding a path to have my own business.

        • @clgt: I tried to apply for accounting job before but I realized I don't really like accounting then I started looking for other jobs and it took me 8 months to land my first job as a airline customer service officer at the airport. I'm still doing this job, the pay is Shit but it's a fun job though

        • @ltq19900310: as long as you are happy. It's all that matters dude :)
