Garden Fresh Dill Gherkins 670g $1.20 (Was $2.70) @ Coles

840

What a great dill! 670g for $1.2, never seen them on special before, let alone this cheap.

And to prove that I'm not gherkin on about nothing, woolworths homebrand is 500g for $1.85, so this is over 50% cheaper than woolworths homebrand when you consider price per kg.

I always get myself in a pickle with these deals…

Damn it!, you took all the puns out of it, it seems like I'm in a pickle!

    • +1

      Haha :)

  • Are these sour or sweet gerkins?

  • +1 for punny

  • +12

As a connoisseur of pickled dill gherkins, I declare these substandard. If I recall correctly, these are made in India (apparently not, web page say Vietnam) and the flavour is insipid, the texture too soft and they use the wrong kind of vinegar.

Go Nova - those are the benchmark in dill pickled gherkins. ;-)

    • +19

I agree - nothing against India or Indians, but gherkins made in India are always inferior to ones made in places like Poland.

Likewise, Polish gulab jamun isn't very good either.

      • +3

Phew! Just cleaned out a store of $2 900g Polish gherkins. I rather naively assumed Aussie brands would be safer, but Indian pickled gherkins? No shukria!

        • +5

          gherkin broden

        • +2

@Meconium: That sounds like a Street Fighter move.

        • @rawm:

Eeeow! Meconium as a street fighter move? What comes before the move: "I carry a newborn infant and I'm not afraid to use it?"

I suppose the counter-move would be the nappy block.

          @Meconium:

Na. They're just for me. Exp 2017.

        • @peteru: He's talking about "gherkin broden", not my username :)

        • @tightwad: enjoy chowin' down on them fellers then bo-ah!

      • +4

Apparently Indians have quite small gherkins.
        Or so I have heard…

        • Everyone who likes proper gerhkins, should really only go for European ones like from Poland or Germany. They really are the best mass produced product. Of course gourmet-style from the Barrosa Valley etc., are in another class altogether.

        • @marcozmitch:
Surely Australian and American gherkins would grow just as big and flavorsome?

        • The average Australian Gherkin is MUCH larger

        • +1

@ratters: We are comparing Australian and European gherkins here.I would have thought they would be much alike. I have a friend from the theatre who loves gherkins and confirms this. He would eat gherkins all day if he could. He would have a gherkin before breakfast, two with lunch and three more after dinner for a treat. He agrees that the Indian gherkins just don't measure up. The size and apparently the flavor just aren't the same.
Only tiddly undersized junior gherkins from India.

        • @King Tightarse:
It's not the size of the gherkin, it's what you do with it. ;-)

        • @peteru:
Absolutely! And where you put your gherkin counts too.
I myself would never put my gherkin in a curry. Just not to my taste and it would get lost amongst the flavors. I think gherkin has to be boldly enjoyed where it can do the most good and give the most pleasure to the eater. Say in a simple sandwich or just eaten on its own. I once had Jewish girlfriend and I have never to this day seen anyone gobble gherkin like her. She loved it 24/7 Would have it with anything.

        • @King Tightarse: The problem with Indian gherkins and other inferior brands has to do with the amount and quality of the gherkins, dill, garlic and vinegar.
As you point out, cucumbers grown in Australia or Europe is not the issue.
Better flavour comes from better ingredients.
Americans may also prefer the sickly-sweet gherkin type and other people may prefer gherkins made with sharp (and cheap) white-spirit vinegar.
(Also I think gherkins are better when they still have a "crunch" and have not gone soggy.)

      O Connoisseur,

I usually buy the Globus ones - they are as best as I can find at the local shops. Where are Nova gherkins available to buy?

Edit: Globus used to be Polish made (I believe) and they are now made in India.

      • +1

Yep, my missus who originates from the US says Globus are the best and the closest to what she could get back in the States.

        • The Globus ones are too large and too salty. Which I guess would probably explain why they appeal to people from US - they typically like to upsize everything and cover it with salt, sugar and grease. ;-) (See how I'm working the stereotypes here without heading down the religious path that would eventually lead to the application of Godwin's law?)

      • +2

You can find 'Smak' brand Polish pickles at some large foreign food importers, like Gaganis Brothers in Adelaide. Very good quality and at around $3.50 for a 880g jar (420g dry content) they're not that much more expensive.

      • Globus for us too. I grew up on Nova, but my dad changed to Globus somewhere along the way. I think they may have had a different name before Globus?

Anyway,I can't find any other acceptable gherkins - they're either too sweet or too soft, or both. Even though they're made in India, not Europe, they're still my fave.

I bought some allegedly genuine Eastern European gherkins from my local greengrocer - Royal something? - that had an awful, gritty texture.

    • -4

Are they kosher halal or just cheap or what caste made them.

      • +2

Nova gherkins are neither kosher nor halal. They have no religion and will not judge you or your beliefs. However they are very yummy and have that great crunch texture to them.

I usually get them from Harris Farm: http://www.harrisfarm.com.au/products/nova-gherkins-sweet-an… but they are available from other places like IGA and Fruitezy.

    • I picked a jar up today and noticed the cheap price. Said made in vietnam.

    • Have you tried Benino sweet & sour dill gherkins?

    • I haven't been around for that long, but why do people keep downvoting you?

      • Good thing I'm dyslexic mR cnut otherwise I'd think you were calling me a….
        ….hey wait a minute!!!

        • :P

      • it's just something we do while waiting for the next deal.

      • Probably because the 'was' refers to the price, which is singular, rather than the gerkins themselves. No correction required.

    • Le prix était de 2,70 $

  • +6

    I relish these puns.

  • -1

    imported..

    • If they sell it for that cheap of course it's imported!

      • Not sure if one should bargain when it comes to food quality. Or am I being paranoid?

        • +1

But aren't nearly all gherkins (especially the best quality gherkins) imported anyways?

        • @lyl: Indeed. The best quality pickles are Polish and German.

        • @Cluster: No, no; you are mistaken. The best ones are Czech and Austrian.

        • +4

  • +7

We bought a few a few months ago for this price. They are very yuk. But, you could buy them for the jars alone. A standard jar from sloads, Reject, Coles. Wherever is at least $2 and they dont even seal properly. This one does!

    • How do you clean them out to get rid of that sour taste or smell? Do you just boil them in water?

      • Dishwasher should do it

edit: downvoter has a crap dishwasher

  • +3

Can't remember the last time I bought Gherkins, will do so tomorrow. Just because of this post. Well done Sir.

  • Cheers, I'll give these a go since they're low in sugar.
Seems they've stopped stocking my go-to favourite pickles, haven't been able to fine 'em anywhere

    • 740mg of Sodium per 100gms is unhealthily high.

      • -1

Mate, what is unhealthy about sodium? Nothing. Too little sodium/potassium is when you run into problems.

Anyone know if these would make good presents? My brain says no, but the ozbargainer in me is screaming yes. So damn confusing

    • +3

Yep, perfect Christmas stocking stuffer or 18th Birthday present.

Hampers/kraft bags filled with condiments/nuts/fruit/beer/wine/chocolate/whatever make great gifts, especially for people who are hard to shop for or already have pretty much everything they need. Everybody has to eat.

  • Do these ones actually taste good?

    • why don't you try for yourself?

  • obviously the smart gherkins escaped, hence they are selling the dill ones that were captured.

  • Thanks OP, this is good timing since my wife is pregnant.

  • You are all children.

I have not laughed at anything else so much this week. Thanks.

  • if you want amazing, huge gherkins, go to costco and get the Vlasic brand Pickles. holy crap, amazing.

  • Upvoted for pun, definitely pickled my fancy

  • Finally, got one to try out. This product is located in the International Food section, not with usual preserved bottles.

    • They are a bit yuck, aren't they?
