key thing here is that there is no 700mhz band 28

but most of you havent even started using it yet to notice the difference anyway unless you have a flagship from last year
id also wait for camera reviews

at this price, it might be worth considering the samsung or lg g5 given their improved cameras

    • +2

The camera on the S7 is the best smartphone camera on the market. This doesn't come close to even the S6's camera.

      • +1

no doubt S7 has the best camera, but at MWC they said the Mi5 Pro has re-worked the camera and it works really well in low-light environments.

      • -1

I'm sure it will be better than S6. Granted S7 may be the best on the market now, but at twice the cost and with less tech + storage.

      • +4

The best camera phone is Panasonic CM1

      • +1

        Also the S7 is waterproof.

        • +1

And double the cost. Also has Touchwiz which is a negative

        • +1

@OnlinePred: S7 is actually cheaper than s6 release price. Touchwiz has improved a lot and much smother

        • Turns out it's not waterproof. Warranty doesn't cover water damage. It's water resistant against splash or accidental submersion. Not made for submersion in a pool or the sea as then there are forces against the device that it is not rated for (specifically 50m is swimming force, so 1.5m doesn't cover that).

    • +1

Xiaomi Mi5 Camera reviews and sample pictures are already out if you Google.

    • +2

Lots of lower end phones have band 28. Phones like the Telstra buzz, and zte fit come to mind. It certainly makes a difference.

Yes this phone scores higher in Antutu but that only because of the lower resolution screen. The G5 looks awesome phone all round. The screen has crazy high brightness levels too and despite a QHD still performs great.

    • +3

Samsung S7 will be almost double the price of this on release and for a while after. Samsung phones are getting very expensive these days. Considering this thing costs around $450 in U.S, perhaps the price here will get even better over a little time. LG G5 will also be much more expensive than this.
Remember folks this is the same CPU, same ram, BUT with 128gb storage AND Qc 3.0 through USB Type C. Samsung doesn't even have Type C let alone QC 3.0.

      • +1

I agree, super fast charging and the benchmarks and showcases on the Snapdragon 820 are top-notch. To have it in a $736 phone is a bargain.

      • -1

type C is not important and it does have fast charging just not QC3.0. It's still not bad.

        • +1

Just not as good. Type C is the new standard, it's easier to use, and creates less wear on the device it self as there are no anchors required. QC3.0 is 40% faster, full charge of a phone in around 30-40mins. That is significantly better. I don't understand why people are saying it doesn't matter, because it's a big difference if you actually care about charging the phone quickly.

        • +5

@cDNA: so why you commenting in this thread? The s7 edge is a much bigger, heavier, more expensive phone? I guess you're Samsung could have no quick charge at all and you would still be happy right? Who cares if the next Samsung has type c, the one you bought doesn't. Not sure what you are getting at?

        • +1

thought people would be more concerned about poor 4G band support for speed and indoor coverage. I don't watch my phone charge but I do watch content that needs to data and know which I want to be faster.

        • -1

@OnlinePred: the samsung doesnt have Type C, but unless youre transferring gbs of data everyday off your phone usb 2 is usually ok

And it has QC3.0 even without type C

also i use a reversible microusb cable that handles quick charge, so your points are moot

        • +1

@furythree: Hey mate, I don't care about usb 2.0, i care about ease of use. The SD version is only QC 2.0. Micro USB is old standard, its the only new phone that doesn't have it. Not sure why my points are moot? My points might be moot to you but they are not moot in general. Not everyone is going to buy a reversible cable for their phone just because it's using old connection.

        • +1

          @cDNA:

What I think is sad is the fact that we think that 24h battery is something good. That's horrible!

They put a lot of new resources on new smartphone but if you use the resources you'll be without battery at night (or even afternoon).

I value faster recharge, and I also value 4000 mha batteries.

Waiting for weird brands like Doogee, Oppo, Leeco and others to put good specs inside a phone together with good battery. And yes, Mi5 is an option.

        • @OnlinePred: but youre going to go buy brand new more expensive type C cables instead

and then switch out for micro usb cables when you need to charge everything else around the house?

          yeah real ease of use

but thanks for paying the early adopter tax for the rest of us

        • @furythree: It's crazy Samsung are the only ones who didn't use type c. I can afford to buy another $10 cable in the name of new standards, ease of use etc. I don't think I need more than two anyway. Nothing else I own uses micro except current phone. Maybe don't upgrade to sd 820, or anything new, don't want to be an early adopter. Admittedly I understand that after buying a phone that costs hundreds of dollars, is very hard do spend another $10.

        • @OnlinePred: its not that crazy. usb C is still in early adopter phase. later this year with note 6 i expect usb c though

    • yes, seems strange ….. people want a fast phone, but don't get 700mhz …… we've had 700mhz phones for a few years in the australian market, but yes the network was only moved from trial to prod Jan 2015, people who bought phones like the samsung S5 and iPhones were future proofed and can now enjoy 700mhz.

    • +2

Nexus 6p are the best images I have seen in comparison out of the last batch of phones. Samsung does a good job but over saturates and brightens at times.

    • +1

Agreed, I wouldn't consider a phone without 700mhz 4G if on Optus or Telstra anyway

    • Just for reference, in daylight the MI5 got better ratings than S7 from GSMARENA, and better 4k video recording/stability.

  • +1

Why does the site state this phone will only work with 2G (then lists the bands) then underneath states 3G and 4G support. Also how can it be so cheap for electronics when Apple products are so expensive over there? If it ships here does it avoid some tax?

    • you pay for the brand

      • Apple phones in China are a status symbol ….. they even make cases so your android phone looks like an iPhone, and knock off iPhones that run android but have iPhone icons ….. sincerest form of flattery .

The cost isn't in the hardware, the cost is in development of the software and ecosystem. Android is cheap because you make the hardware, but don't need to develop an OS or ecosystem, just port to support your hardware. Google has done the heavy lifting of OS development for you.

    • +4

it will support 3G and 4G too as per the official Xiaomi website, it's just Banggood have wrote it on 3 lines instead of 1.

it's only $570 AUD in China, so Banggood & related parties make their fair share. but xiaomi have been known to make near cost price quality phones with premium design.

      • yes, the redmi note 2 is a lot of phone for $200 for the 16GB version and$235 for the 32GB version.

Pity there is is no 700mhz support.

None of these phones are designed for the Australian market so they don't support all our bands hence terms like "4g" don't mean much unless you at which 4G bands / frequencies

  • +4

My Galaxy S7 edge is twice that amount (total cost of contract+phone). THose specs are dope and it has a snapdragon 820.

  • -1

no expandable memory makes me sad….(yes I realise that 128 is crazy big but I like to swap my music in and out using memory cards….)

    • +2

this will be the last one Makoto :) I just wanted to share. a lot of my friends didn't know about Xiaomi, they were planning to buy the other flagships outright.

  • +2

I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 sitting on my desk which is now a paperweight. It has been listed on Gumtree for months, barely a nibble. I was very, very pro Xiaomi when I got it, however after a little bit of pressure from my smartphone bike mount just to hold it in place, was enough to damage the digitizer behind the LCD screen (which is still intact fine).

This one says metal body but I wouldn't trust it now especially without an Aussie warranty. I am gonna pre-order an S7 Edge, for $1200 after cash rewards, then get another $125 back for GST when I send it overseas with my mum next month to Bali through TRS (and not declare it). So that is $1075 plus the free Gear VR which I do value at full price of $150 so that means the S7 Edge is costing me about $925 with proper aussie warranty and features like waterproof and I do need Band 28 as well.

Anyone wanna buy a broken Redmi Note 2 feel free to message me hahaha.

    • +11

Cool story bro. Now go and do something exciting!! :)

    • +10

Don't forget to add memory card too. I had 5 Samsung phones in a row that lagged (S2,S3,S4,Note 4,S6), never giving them my money again. Gear VR may or may not be useful, just like the edge display it's probably a gimmick. Not sure why you are sharing this story, just trolling? You have one bad experience and jump ship spending over double the cost of the phone on a different brand?

XIAMOI Mi5 = samsung specs at half the price. Would be stupid to not buy it unless you love the samsung brand.

I will buy an MI5 in a few weeks when it's cheaper, then sell my stupid S6 for around $400 bucks as it's in great condition, therefore i get this phone for around $200. See my story is better than yours.

      • -5

Hahahahahaha…..this guy is just mad, because he doesn't know how to take care of his phone. You probably did not even own those phones.

This phone is Xiaomi, though. A chinese brand that doesn't offer local warranty or have Telstra's 4GX band.

        • +2

??? I don't use Telstra. If you don't understand phones, don't know what xiaomi is, and only want a Samsung, why come here and comment

        • -1

It's a Chinese phone, built for the PRC market, why the eff would they worry about satisfying requirements for Australia?

        • @OnlinePred: Relax dude, We do know well what xiaomi is. You must remember it is a product from China and no local warranty as well. It can't be compared with Samsung Galaxy. I might purchase this phone if they sell under $300 not over $700. Don't be a fool.

        • @Sir Casm: True. Better get Samsung Galaxy. It looks like a good deal but too expensive price trying for a mobile from China.

        • Mate, you're generous. I pay no more than $200 for testing.

        • @DavenTas: Just remember that HTC is also a Chinese company. The only issue here is warranty. It is a flagship phone that beats others that cost almost double in various features.

      • +3

I just wanted to show that really that the price difference is not "half the price". $736 for the Xiaomi vs $925 for the S7 Edge once you take into account CashRewards, TRS and the free VR headset.

I haven't had any Samsung devices before, so not as jaded about them as some people. Especially with 4GB and 2016 Exynos, If it lags with over 100k Antutu I would be very surprised.

Also you highlighted another issue…. resale value. Yes you can sell your Samsung still very easily, and I am sure in 2018 I can sell my S7 Edge in good condition no problem.

Try selling a Xiaomi Mi 5 with no warranty in 2018 and see how much you get for it.

    • +2

Wow interesting. I remember your pro Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 comments too. You were one of the "early adopters" on Ozbargain I think.

I am still using mine and pretty damn happy with it!

Btw what exactly is wrong with it? You said the digitizer, so it doesn't detect touches anymore or what?

      • This is what is wrong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu4bq-csS4w

It is like there are phantom fingers tapping on the centre of the screen.

Yes, I was a super early adopter, I dropped my LG G2 like the day before the RN2 launched so I ordered it straight away.

    • +1

can't compare a $180 Redmi note 2 to a $1000 samsung S7. My 9 year old son has the Note2 and loves it, FHD, phablet and he hasn't broken it and keeps it in a case for protection ….. not the same build quality as my Samsung S5 (band 28 support for 4G, water proof, usb3, etc) . but then the xioami note2 was less then 1/2 the price of the samsung (S5 was $450). Phablets will always be delicate, the larger screen and hence more leverage when stressed and they try to make them thinner, so they become even more fragile. More so if it's a $200 phablet with a plastic chassis (Note2). It's a throw away phone at $180, the cost of replacing the screen with these integrated screens now (display and digitiser laminated together) is expensive …. think the Samsung s6 is about $400 for screen replacement. I see lots of people with flagship phones and cracked screens on the train so don't feel alone, cracked screens seem to common and I think its more use than build quality that has caused the crack. My S5 is usually in my back pocket and I sit on it BUT it is also in a protective case.

I'm looking forward to the S7 in 2 years when it becomes more affordable.

  • +13

Great spec. but seriously someone will pay $736 for a Chinese brand phone? You got to be kidding… You know how Chinese products are like, they always exaggerate on their product specification. I know Xiaomi makes the best smart phone in China, but paying $736 for a phone with only one year send back to China warranty. Think about the cost to send it back if DOA or for repair.

I rather pay the extra to buy Samsung s7/note6 with 2 year local warranty.

    • +4

And i thought i am the only one who thinks like that. Somehow i feel uneasy to pay such an amount for a not that well known brand.
I would rather buy the last years model of Samsung/Sony/Apple/…. than the new flagship from Xiaomi

    • -2

Get the g5 not the samsungs. Will be much more expensive though. If you don't know xiaomi then perhaps don't comment. These specs are better than g5 and s7 at half the price. And most hands on praise the build especially the ceramic one.

      • -5

If this phone is THIS GOOD, then try convince local Telco/retailers to sell them. I'd like to test before buy when paying over $700 on a phone. No deal for me ever!

        • +1

the australian market is small and to make a version of the OS for our locale and enable the extra bands isn't worth it for them, and the Telcos are dependent on the phone manufacturers tweaking for our market ….. waste energy when the domestic market has high enough demand for what you manufacture.

        • +1

Why would I do that? There's prob a lot of legal issues and great costs. They are making their money in India and China with plans to push global. The phone Costa $450 U.S so maybe wait till it's out then prices will drop. Not sure why people can't see this is the specs of best phones not even out, for half the cost

        • What half the cost were you taking about?

          Xiaomi Mi5 Pro US$518.99
Samsung Galaxy S7 US$698.18 / CNY$4550 (referring to price in China)

      • +1

I just bought a xiaomi note 3, and think it's pretty over rated.

Paying $736 for this type of phone, I'd have to have rocks in my head. Everyone's different I guess.

      • -5

Give up man. Why do you care if people pay extra for the best smartphone manufacturer in the world?

Samsung S7 edge all the way.

        • +2

          As bad as isheep.

        • +2

Because I wouldn't want them to waste their money

    • +3

Yeah, I love Xiaomi, but that's a lot of risk for $736. Who knows how well the OS works outside China. The Note 2 needs flashing, following which a whole lot of locales and languages aren't even supported.

      • +2

yeah, note2 t $180 is a great FHD phablet and throw away if it breaks, but $500 for a chinese phone …..they were doing Samsung S5 for $375 at Christmas time with 2 year Australian warranty and FULL 4G band coverage.

These phones are made for the Chinese market not Australian so issues with ROMs ( global ROM is good but not optimal for australia) and locale and lack of band coverage are to be expected …..

        • -2

Not sure what you are on about. This is as good as s7 and g5 for half the cost. If you don't know what you are taking about don't comment. Miui is great and they often offer vanilla roms too

      • +3

My note 3 was a nightmare, it had global ROM when I got it. Kept getting voice drop outs and disconnecting every minute or so. Then flashed with ROM, much better but still getting drop outs.

I might buy a xiaomi again as a spare, nothing over 150 this time due to my experience. Risking 730+ on one, no way. I'd rather the Sammy or LG knowing it will work like suppose to even with half specs, theain use of my phone is to talk to people.

Also good luck sending any phones back for RMA if you get a dud, I sent tickets to everbuying, heard nothing from them till now (1 month later)

    • +5

Xiaomi is 5 years old and already top 5 phone manufacturer in the world. Safe to say they know their shit. Factor in the cost of sending back for warranty 3 or 4 times (being extreme here) and u would still be financially better off than paying for s7 here. The extra you are paying can only be attributed to the brand and convenience of having local warranty. Even if the phone fails out of warranty, u can buy another for much less than 700, still better off.

      • +2

THere are 1.5 billion chinese people in the world.

    • I don't understand why it's so expensive in the first place. Xiaomi have traditionally sold their phones at close to cost price..

    • Send back to China warrenty? I just had drama with my mi3 getting it repaired. I was not able to send it back as they expected me to take it to one of their stores. Also because I didn't buy it from one of their official stores, warrenty is useless. Luckily for me it was the charging port and my local (Chinese) phone repairer ordered the part to do it.

  • I was considering the Mi5, but I don't know if MIUI is any good, and what their update timeframes are like, so I stuck with pure Android and got the 6P.

    • +2

they used to provide vanilla roms too…. dunno if thats still the case….

      • Xioami have no need for vanilla / global ROM until demand from the chinese domestic market has been filled which could be a while, then worry about global ROM as the Indian market is next.

        • mmm, just was pointing out they used to provide non-MIUI roms…

    • They provide weekly updates or monthly updates, you can opt in/out.

  • Mi5 is in high demand in China right now. It is very hard to buy one with the official price. I think this price is OK (extra 100+ AUD) if someone want it and don't want to wait. Just make sure google play is installed properly (very important).

  • I'm sure this is a good phone and the price should be much lower than this.

I guess best course of action is just wait for few months and wait for the price to drop down?

  • -2

I am happy with my iphone 7.

  • +2

$739 over at Vickmall, too. Many WP Xiaomi fans have bought from there.

    http://www.vickmall.com/xiaomi-mi5.html

I'm still hanging out for a deal on the RN3P, which is at the absolute upper limit of my care/dollar ratio for a phone these days!

    • Me too. Hopefully Mushtato will sell them here

  • Everyone claims this is 'half the price' of the G5 - has the G5 price been released?

    • +1

Is it going to be less than $1000 for a 128gb version? No way in hell. RRP is $540 USD for the 128gb version btw, in which case it would be half the price.

      • +1

Well I don't know if there will be a 128gb version of the G5, but from what I've read it will be launching within the $550-600 USD price range, much like the previous G4. Therefore, storage capacity aside, I struggle to see how the G5 will be double in price. I suspect it may be similar in price to this Xiao Mi, or if not then maybe 10-20% more expensive at most. For example, from what I can see the G4 RRP is $869 AUD.

The S7 is a different proposition, but again the starting RRP is $1149 AUD. Not quite double but agree that obviously there is a significant premium.

        • The 16gb G4 was released at $599 in the US. The Mi5 base model 32gb is $340 USD. S7 @1149 is not 128gb.

        • @OnlinePred:

          I read the 32gb Xiao Mi was a lower-specced model with 3gb RAM and a Snapdragon 620?

Edit: After a bit more research, it appears it also doesn't come with a micro SD slot, and the camera sensor despite being from Sony seems to only be employed by Chinese budget manufacturers. Make of that what you will, but I checked out a review of the Huawei 8 and the camera results weren't terribly impressive.

Still, for the core performance of a Snapdragon 820 and 128gb of internal memory, it's decent value.

        • @atlas: Yea 3 versions of the phone. All I'm saying is you have to compare specs for price, and having a 128gb version then you have to compare like to like.

        • @OnlinePred:

That's exactly what I was doing. I acknowledged the difference in storage capacity. And given that you can now get 128gb microsd cards relatively cheaply, as long as the phone has a microSD slot then I don't think it's a big issue.

The main spec being the SoC and RAM is what should be compared at first instance, and all three have the 820. Then you have to weigh up all the other specs like camera, resolution, water resistance, microSD slot, removable battery and band 28 against the price difference which, as I've pointed out, will not be quite 'half' as you've asserted. The difference will be even less if you can get GST/TRS back.

          @atlas: Mi5 pro 128gb = $550AUD, Samsung Galaxy S7 = $1149 + 128gb microsd ($85) = $1,234. Half of $1,234 is 617. Is 617 greater than 550, yes. Therefore Mi5 is less than half the price of the S7.

G5 obviously pricing hasn't been revealed. Although I would get G5 over S7 anyway, but even given last years price it's still very close to half. If you take value of the phone that you get out of the box, the Mi5 is easily the best value by far. It might not have the features you are after, but that doesn't make it any less value. An example, Mi5 doesn't have removable battery so maybe add $50 onto the price, it also doesn't have micros sd but it does have 128gb storage so no change, it isn't waterproof so add another $50. Although on the sammy side it runs touchwiz so add $500. ;-) Can you tell I'm sour towards Samsung?

          @OnlinePred:
Sorry but where is this $550AUD price that you speak of?

        • @atlas: It was the conversion from RMB to AUD done on the day of launch. It is now a little more at $565 AUD. Check any tech blog for the slides they had in the MWC presentation. http://mi5xiaomi.com/xiaomi-mi5-price

        • @OnlinePred:

Well I'm taking the posting of this deal as the cheapest price available at launch because it can actually be bought at that price.

As far as I'm aware, I can't buy the phone from your PowerPoint slide.

Not only that - your post further up literally said the RRP is $540USD.

Lastly the RMB price you converted was for the crippled entry level version - not the Pro facepalm

        • @atlas: I will waste my time for you. PRO (4gb RAM 128gb ROM SD 820) = RMB 2699. RMB 2699 to AUD is 562.88. PowerPoint slide is from MWC presentation. FYI, MWC is the Mobile World Congress. It's kinda a big deal in the mobile world. Given that G5 isn't avail for pre-order, and the S7 is a rip off like iPhones, it is still cheapest top tier, high spec phone. Can we end this now? FINALLY, it was $540 on the day of release due to the dollar fluctuating, I could explain that too, but I won't as it will further raise more things to argue about.

Xiaomi no doubt a good Chinese brand but $736 is too much.Which ever brand you buy it's life is 2-3 years max as battery is not good after that(unless replaced) and above all you don't want to stuck with one phone for more than three years.the best time for any new flagship phone is to buy after 1 or 2 years at a good price.I am not crazy to change phone every year unless I have to.

    • This is pre order price. It is $540 USD. I change every 1-2 years because I can I guess. Wait for the reviews to come through. By all means by an S7 or G5 they are both great phones, just double the price.

For this price I'd pick up a S6 Aus stock any day. or I'd just wait until S7 grey import drop to the same price. Sorry Xiaomi you're a good phone but no local warranty and your ugly logo on the front put me off. There is also no evidence that the camera can take a picture as good quality as S6 yet.

    • Where can you get an aus S6 128gb for less than $750? Also S6 has worse battery life, questionable updates, laggy in comparison, and camera quality hasn't been compared but the MI5 has had a lot of work put into the camera and the photos look fantastic. Perhaps though go for a Galaxy S3, they are great phones too…

You wouldn't get local warranty on Xiaomi phones ever in Australia… They ain't gonna change their logo just because some people don't like it. You probably are better off paying double the price for the same specs and get better logo phones.

Lets not forget that these are meant to be $354USD which works out to be around $500AUD. That's roughly the price you should be paying plus postage.

I'm definitely waiting to purchase one but $700+ is far too dear

    • Yea can't believe the value! Looking forward to seeing reviews. Is looking at LG g4 as price is quite good, but to be able to spend a tiny bit more and get this is amazing

      • It's quite a steep jump in price compared to what I a paid for my G4 a few months back. And some areas may not be as good for others, such as camera, screen, replaceable battery, micro sd and band support. A more powerful better energy efficient SoC would be nice and welcomed improvement.
