      • so many inspirons though i cant choose. sooo many

          1. Do you want 13" or 15"
          2. Do you want SSD or HDD
          3. What size SSD do you want?
          4. How much are you willing to spend?

          Tada, your laptop.

        • @cDNA: 15 prefer but 13 is fine… SSD 128gb is fine 256 even better. can always upgrade. and 1300 aud. trust me there is still like 40 inspirons in that range with all slightly different processors

        • @endlless:

Look for i5 6200U. Just find the XPS13 that costs $1899 and buy it.

        • @cDNA: thanks mate. before i jump the gun mind explaining why that i5 in particular? always interested in learning

        • +1

          @endlless:

There are really only two Intel CPUs (with skylake architecture which is Intel's newest CPU) around your price range.

          Intel CORE i5 6200U
          Intel Core i7 6500U

They only differ very slightly and it has to do with the L3 cache and turbo clock speed. For an average user it won't matter. If you want the Core i7 6500U you can perhaps get the Dell Inspiron 15 or Lenovo E460 or E560 (from lenovo online store). If you get the XPS 13 you get great build quality, premium materials like carbon-fibre and metal, USB TYpe-C (new standard. Also known as USB 3.1 Gen 2), infinity display (tiny bezel around display).

Whirlpool thread of Dell XPS 13 owners: Whirlpool Dell XPS 13

        • @cDNA: Why would you suggest spending $1899 for a XPS13 when Lenovo frequently has deals for their E460 for ~$900? Are the premium features really worth the extra?

        • Any reason why you guys would not suggest the Asus Zenbook UX305UA?

        • @dimsum2: zenbook sucks i returned mine and got an inspiron

        • @endlless: Bugger, any particular reasons?

        • @dimsum2: touch pad sucks the processor sucked dick for some reason and it wouldn't work properly when you slept it

        • @endlless: So is that processor a good thing or a bad thing?
          ;)

        • @dimsum2:

Build quality is crappy and the hinge is mediocre. Prior to this model, there were problems with the hinge. Go on amazon reviews if you want to find out more.
Battery is not as good and the SSD is a lot less faster.

        • @CyberGenesys:

E460 is not an ultrabook, is not made from premium materials like the aluminium & carbon fibre, does not have USB 3.1 TYPe - C, can't be charged using a dell companion, wifi isn't as good, infinity edge display is the best ultrabook display and the battery on the XPS13 is just far superior. It's worth it.

If Dell improves the cooling, better heatsink/fan and the touchpad then the xps13 becomes the best of the best.

        • @cDNA: endlless wasn't asking for an ultrabook (and said they would prefer a 15") which is why I questioned why you would recommend a 13" product at twice the cost of another. Personally I see carbon fibre, aluminium and other premium materials as simply wank factor; and none stop the screen from smashing if I drop it.

However, I am biased as I have a Lenovo E460. The battery easily lasts a days requirement (8-9 hours screen on time). I dispute your claim regarding wireless (I personally would prefer the Intel wireless in the E460). The other reasons you listed are purely subjective. Not many people need 28hour battery life (and have carry an extra battery) or USB3.1. The E460 is also very easy to access to upgradable parts such as memory, SSD etc.

As I mentioned, we are heading into subjective statements; I would prefer two Lenovo E460 rather than a single Dell XPS13, no doubt you would prefer a single XPS13, each to their own.

        • @CyberGenesys:

I don't care if he was asking for a 15", he said 13 is fine and you suggested a bulky ass 14".
The E460 is inferior in all regards except the i7 processor, soo it's not subjective. The i7 processor is basically the same as the i5 processor except for the L3 cache, which won't affect real world performance. The XPS13 is built to last. Lenovo's entry 'business' laptops aren't as reliable.

It's not a 'wank factor' if it is made from metal and carbon-fibre. Why do you think business laptops are built from premium materials? Why do you think people pay a lot of money for macbook pro laptops? They have amazing build quality is one reason.

You're paying for the ultrabook form factor too which feels like the size of a 12" laptop, because of its 13.3" infinity display. The Samsung NVMe pci-e SSD is also a reason for its high price. Well worth it.
The Lenovo E460 is simply a laptop for people on a budget. I don't think you know the meaning of 'subjective' and I have no idea why you would want 2 laptops. Just accept it and just know not everyone wants a mediocre laptop.

        • @cDNA:

          Dell XPS 13: i5-6200U, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD, 13" FHD screen, 56Wh battery, 720p webcam, 2x2 ac dual band + BT
          Lenovo E460: i7-6500U, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD, 14" FHD screen, 47Wh battery, 720p webcam, 2x2 ac dual band + BT, 2GB dedicated GPU

These are numbers, they are not subjective. To what are you referring to when you say inferior in all regards?

Don't get me wrong, I agree the Dell is the 'better' ultrabook, but that is because we are comparing it to the Lenovo which is a laptop. With the Dell you are paying a hell of a lot just to have aluminium/carbon fibre & and a slim size that means you have to purchase extra adapters just to use standard peripherals (eg HDMI, ethernet).

Edit: You ninja edited your comment.

Why do you think people pay a lot of money for macbook pro laptops?

          Don't get me started.

I see it like this; the Lenovo is 90%+ performance of the Dell is but at 50% of the price. People can make up there own mind if they feel the extra $ is worth it to save some size/weight.

        • I honestly didn't see your comment when i was editing mine.

Oh, I wasn't referring to that particular model. I was referring to the $1899 one.

I think you should compare the Lenovo E series with the Inspiron laptops.
The Dell XPS laptops is on the same level as Lenovo's X1/Yoga ultrabooks. I don't particularly care for what is bang for buck. I prefer the 'prosumer' laptop over the standard E series lenovo laptop.

Most of the extra price is for the ultrabook features and Dell's signature touches. I prefer the XPS line, but that's because money is not really an issue.
The difference between you and me is that I am after what is more new and premium whereas you are looking at it from a price/performance perspective.
These people seem to think it's worth it:

  • if i buy something from kogan, and its shipped from melbourne, will i be able to claim TRS?

    • If the item is above $1000, the tax invoice needs to be in your name. The answer to your question is yes! If Kogan charges GST, you can claim it.

      • so does kogan australia charge GST? and that means if i buy fro kogan hong kong, i won't be able to claim GST on the product?

        • The prices of vouchers, accommodation, tours, and travel related services shown are in Australian dollars and include GST where applicable. Prices are current at the time of display but are subject to change.

          https://www.kogan.com/au/terms-and-conditions/

ALL AUSTRALIAN RETAILERS MUST CHARGE GST. Otherwise they go to jail for tax evasion.

        • @cDNA:

What if it's supplied by Kogan Australia but the item location in in Hong Kong?

        • @sluu83:

          refer to eug's comment

        • and that means if i buy fro kogan hong kong, i won't be able to claim GST on the product?

That is right. No GST is paid, so there's no GST to claim.

          https://www.kogan.com/au/terms-and-conditions/

It is important to note that different Terms and Conditions apply in respect of Orders for KA Products, Kogan HK Products, Kogan Travel Products and Kogan Mobile Products. Where you place an Order for Kogan HK Products to be delivered outside of Hong Kong, you will be the importer of the Kogan HK Products into Your jurisdiction.

        • +1

          @cDNA:

I am pretty sure the GST will be included in the price if you purchase from a ~.com.au online store.

Nope, the .com.au site can be an agent for their overseas counterpart. Have a closer read of the terms and conditions page you linked to above for more detailed info.

          e.g. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-s6-octa-core-4g-…

At the bottom of the description is this line:

This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan HK Limited pursuant to the Terms and Conditions.

That means you're buying it from Kogan HK. You're the importer. Since you don't pay GST when the item enters the country, there's no GST to claim back.

        • @eug:
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Nikon-DSLR-Camera-Lens-Kit-24…

It says at the bottom i am buying from Kogan AU for this product?

        • @eug:

also when you buy on eBay with the 20% off, does it still have the original price on the receipt? does that mean i can claim 10% of the original price when i go through TRS?

        • @sluu83:

It says at the bottom i am buying from Kogan AU for this product?

In that case you'll probably get a tax invoice with GST, but better double-check with them to be safe.

also when you buy on eBay with the 20% off, does it still have the original price on the receipt? does that mean i can claim 10% of the original price when i go through TRS?

That has been the case during previous eBay sales, so it'll probably still be the same this time.

        • @sluu83:
Yes you can claim the GST back on the full amount. I did it with a Galaxy S5 with similar deal via DSE.

        • @eug: agreed .com.au could be an agent. I bought a return flight to Asia from DeNA Travel http://au.skygate-global.com appears to be like an AU website. All airfare shown in AUD. No credit card surcharge if pay using direct debit card.

          Cheaper than any other websites.
Paid ~$1300, few weeks later bank statement arrived says it came from a hk merchant plus $50 conversion fee.

        • -1

          @eug:

That is right. No GST is paid, so there's no GST to claim.

Don't worry. In 2017, you'll be paying GST on all imports above $30, so you'll be able to claim TRS back.

        • @lostn: That won't work either, as the overseas seller would not have an ABN.

    • You can't. Kogan sells Grey imported stuff n sold by Kogan HK if I'm not wrong.

    • You can only claim the amount of gst that is printed on the invoice. I suspect kogan invoices won't have any gst paid section because they are not paying gst.

Thanks got CC2 for $47.20 from TGG

  • I ordered about 2am from futu and its ready for delivery in my regional area tomorrow morningvia courier

    pretty damn good service

  • Refurbed gopros from hongkong?

    $248 for silver hero3+
    $304 for black hero3+

    Yay or nayyy??

    • +2

buy a xiaomi yi action cam instead for 90 bucks. watch youtube for comparisons, its pretty comparable to gopro 4. definitely loads better than a gopro (whatever the cheap one is?)

  • Anyone recommend 240gb SSD's sub $100 that are decent

  • Thanks guys! finally bought the Sony RX100 M3 from Teds for $729! (good bargain in comparison to past deals on OZB) was going to buy it from the Sony store but saw some negative reviews that some bought the Sony RX100 M3 and it was scratched and dented!

  • Is it worth buying a NUC now or will there be better bargains to be had when the skylake NUCs come out?

    • +1

The price of Skylake NUC selling at Futu online is way too high at the moment. For example Futu online selling NUC6I5SYH for $559.20 while Kogan selling it for $480.08.

Don't buy it now, just waits for the price to tumble.

      • I am not sure if NUC prices 'tumble'. Take a look at last year's models NUC5I5 and NUC5I7. They have dropped in price but not drastically despite being superceded by the NUC6/Skylake models

I think you will be waiting a long time… In the meantime, I bought a NUC6I5SYH 3 weeks ago, and am really enjoying using it. Bought it for $629 from Centrecom. I wanted to buy it from a bricks and mortars shop rather than online in case I had to return it under warranty - much easier this way. These ebay prices are cheap however.

        • I mean NUC6I5SYH sold by Futu online is marking the price far too high, $699 ($559.20 after discount) as compare to some sold out listing

          Kogan $601 ($480.08 after discount)

and, in previous eBay 15% off promotion

          Freeshippingtech $604.61 ($513.92 after discount)

and there is plenty of margin for Futu to drop.

  • Anyone bought a Dyson V6 previously? Really interested in getting one, but we have hard wood floors. Leaning towards the Absolute, but would be great to be able to save $200 and just get the basic.

    • -1

Think Basic is fine, you can buy the head speraretly for 150 I think

    • +1

Have a look at kulprit's comment in this thread here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237942
Good summary of the differences in there.

    • I bought the standard v6 last sale. I have Tasmanian oak floorboards throughout the house. It works perfectly and doesn't scratch.

    • +1

This PDF (obtained from in store) gives a decent run down of the differences too:
      https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13568643/Dyson%20V6.pdf

I'd got the basic V6 and have found it works great on tiles and carpet. Personally, I couldn't justify spending more on the more expensive variants.

  • Any recommendations of powerful dual sim mobile phones ? Many Thanks

  • Is $628 Shipped for the Synology DS415+ a good deal? and is this a good model to get as a backup for a small business or could you recommend any other models ? cheers for the help

  • Any thoughts on the Macbook 12" for 1563 or waiting for the next gen that'll come out soon?

    • +1

I'd say wait. The 12" is approaching the end of cycle and there should be a refresh this month or next. The skylake chips should bring a lot more features too.

  • Any deals for ps4????

    • Kogan has the 1TB black for $455 delivered

  • Many of them are ozbargained. I gave up on finding any deal. However I am sure Ebay will come up with a new 20% discount code&coupon soon enough anyway.

  • Hi guys,

Am after a 65inch TV but can't decide between the ones offered by The Good Guys (am limited to the as in WA).

Was tossing up between the Sony-KDL65W850C and the LG 65UF680T. Or would a Samsung be a better option? It would be in the living/kitchen area and mainly just for TV n movies…Can anyone provide feedback if they have these models?

Have looked up rtings as previously suggested and the Sony seems to rate better but when I saw them in store the LG one seemed brighter and more vivid?

    • +1

Samsungs always seem brighter and more vivid in store. However Sony tends to focus on realistic colors and shading.
      The Sony model wins imo

      • I ended up ordering the Sony from the only WA store that had stock left (ready for pick up already)! Can't wait to plug it in! And also got the LG OLED 55 for my partner lol

  • I bought Samsung Evo 250GB. Didnt saw that it was only for Laptop. however I want to use this SSD on my desktop. Is it possible to use this in desktop or it is only for laptop?

    • +1

Yup no problem, the plugs are the same. It'll be sitting loose in your desktop though. You can buy an adaptor kit that'll let you screw it into your case. Or you can just tape it down. :)

    • +1

ive had my SSD dangling in my case for years no troubles at all, theres no moving parts :)

    • Same cases are compatible with SSD's, but yes, even if its not you can just leave it hanging. If worst comes to worst you can use blutak to secure it.

  • So I've been hanging out for a deal on a gopro 4 silver for months now. Is $432.80 the best I'm going to get? Or is it worth waiting till late May when I can claim my 10% gst back?

    • +1

Depends on how lucky you feel. Last year they went for $319, $344, $377 and $396. Who knows, the deals might come again soon!

  • +1

guys im thinking of claiming TRS on the 980ti, any chance they would know if i put a tnt2 wrapped in plastic into a 980ti box :P

  • Any chance the S7 Edge will be put up for sale before this ends?

    • Unlikely

  • Can anyone recommend CPU and mobo (have 8GB DDR4, 120GB SSD, and spare HD6950) - for wife to do office work and allow the kids to do the odd game or two (nothing high end, Minecraft and some older games).

    Thanks!

Is there any coffee pod machines on sale that does froths milk aswell?

    Any recommendations??

    Cheers.

  • Any deals on DSLR? D3300? <$500

<$500 for D3300 kit. That's not the cheapest deal you'll ever see for that kit - it's been down to around the $300 range - but it's not bad. Likewise, the kit lens isn't great, but it's not bad either.

My girlfriend picked one of these up recently, and it gives you a lot of bang for the buck.

  • Any deals on Samsung Galaxy S7/edge other than Kogan?

  • Can someone report these guys again please?

iPod Shuffle RRP $75, Kogan ebay price $111.99 to $121.99.

    http://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-ipod/ipod-shuffle

    http://www.ebay.com.au/rpp/kogan/ts20-kog-07-audios/other/

    • +2

Or… you know… you could do it?

RRP has no bearing on this. Raising the price during the sale does though.

They show as $111.99 to me though except for the silver one.

      • no idea how .. but you're right, I suppose they could only get in trouble for raising the price prior to the sale. I know I've seen people post that information before but have no idea how to get it.

oh well, a shitty company anyway. first time I bought from them the product didn't work. at no point was I offered a refund and after I took it to Google's Trusted Stores thing they came back and said "oh well you didn't specifically ask for a refund so we didn't offer you one"… right after I'd grudgingly accepted store credit with a short expiry date on it.

  • Hi guys, need suggestions: Samsung UA65JU6400W or LG 65UF680T ?

I have the Sammy 55" but don't know if the LG i s on par since its a few hundred bucks cheaper

    • +2

In my research, the Samsung UA65JU6400W was considered better than the LG 65UF680T and Sony-KDL65W850C. The LG doesn't seem to rate that highly even though it looked nice in store. Ended up grabbing the Sony as it appears to be good value for what it is and I did not want to spend too much on a TV that will probably just play TV shows and Disney movies.
