    • good deal for surface but comes down to personal preference, I dont agree with the ipad prices but is what it is, if someone's in the market for a ipad pro now its a good deal as will be hard to find better then these prices atm..

ouch, for something that is still locked down in iOSland. Go the Surface Pro 4 instead

  • bought one from kogan!!!

I'm sorry but 1400 bucks for a tablet? to play apps on?

  • +3

Why is futu_online charging $1,799 for the ipad pro 4G when the RRP from Apple is $1,699?

Do they always charge that much? How do they compete? Or did they just increase the price for this 'sale'?

    • Increased price for the sale

  • does it incur any GST import related fee for purchases above $1000 from KOGAN?

    • Don't think so but dbl check, also you don't get Gst receipt n lose aus Apple warranty, better off paying the extra with futu for piece of mind imo

  • Is there a keyboard cover for these?

    And do they use iOS?

In other words, is it just an oversized iPad, or a true alternative to a laptop, ala Surface Pro?

    • They use iOS and they have a keyboard cover for these.

      • iOS is not a good OS for a laptop replacement.

If it can't run any desktop apps, I'm not interested.

        • It can't, that said, that's what it's not trying to do (that said, at this kind of price, I think it should be able to, but that's just me).
Looked alright as a bigger iPad, I guess.

        • @Oversimplified: If that's not what it's trying to do, then it's just an oversized iPad with an expensive stylus ($100 was it?).

The Surface Pro is a tablet/laptop 2 in 1 hybrid. It's so much more versatile.

There's no way I would want to be doing any productivity work (Excel, Word, assignments etc) on iOS. Surface Pro + mouse (which iPad Pro won't support) is a full laptop experience, and it's totally viable.

They're both $1240 right now, so for me it would be a no brainer.. if I wasn't so stingy.

I'm expecting Apple to do a Macbook that doubles as a tablet, running MacOS. i.e. a Surface Pro clone.

        • @lostn: I personally agree with your view, that said, it's not trying to be a laptop.

Yes, it's not replacing a laptop, yes, it's fairly expensive considering that you can get a laptop replacement with that kind of price. That said, whether it's good for someone or not would depend on whether someone wants a larger iPad or a 2-in-1 device.

I even stayed up waiting for KeyNote just in case it was going to be a MacOS device (I did hear rumours of Apple testing it with Intel chip, which probably was just a rumour or just from early stages of the development). Simply because I wanted to look into an alternative replacement for my old Surface Pro 1 (which was replaced with SP3 by MS).

I do own a SP3 and I'd probably go for SP4 if I had a choice (probably SP4 m3, since being fanless makes it more attractive to me). That said, iPad Pro looked alright as a bigger iPad. If someone wants a bigger iPad or bigger Android tablet (why is slightly beyond my comprehension, but that aside), this would be above Surface Pro series in my recommendation. SP3 sucks as a tablet. Heavy, noisy and most importantly, half the programs are made for non-touch screen devices and most people don't have a touchscreen with their Windows device.

        • @Oversimplified:

For non-touch screen apps, touching the screen does nothing?

Is the M3 version of SP4 cheaper than i5?

Are there any benchmarks around for M3 vs i5/i7?

I do intend to play games, but they are mostly visual novels. Nothing cutting edge. Just wanted to be sure M3 could handle the newer ones.

Do the fans only spin in i5 model when it's under load, or constantly?

If M3 is truly the better option, it might be worth waiting for the Samsung Note Pro (or was it Tab Pro?) which looks slick and uses M3. I found the SP4 a bit thick. The Samsung is the same thickness as their usual tablets.

        • @lostn: It depends, they register touch as "left click". Some programs do register touch for things like scrolling (i.e. firefox, chrome etc), some just register it as a left click (i.e. Steam is awful in this regard). That said, I use Android tablet for few things because using Surface Pro 3 like a tablet can be awful. I still haven't found a program that is like Perfect Viewer or MX player.

M3 is like the older Y series from Intel. Intel made Core M so that it could fill in the position of Y series; A CPU for 2-in-1 devices.

M3 model is a reasonable option. I wouldn't say it's a better option. It's basically like the older i3 model, but they made it fanless as well. There is a trade off between performance and having no fan. Current gen Core M CPU looked reasonable enough to be considered an alright choice if you want something that has no fan and is willing to give up performance a bit for that. You can easily look up a benchmark score from Google.

i5 model on Surface Pro 3 do go crazy with fan sometimes (i.e. I had only 3 tabs on Firefox at one point and the fan started to go at full speed, it may have been because being out in sun for a bit though). That said, the fan noise is inevitable since fan starts going whenever it goes above certain temperature from what I've seen. Since I have a desktop, fanless laptop is a viable option for me.

Samsung one looked like an Android tablet, which makes it unattractive to me (i.e. Windows tablet without an adjustable stand, only one port for everything (including charging), with new pen technology (not S-Pen, if it were, I would've seriously considered getting one) that I've not seen before). If it was an Android tablet and if it was around the price of Note 12.2 with S pen, I would've been interested, but as what it is, it's meh for me.

        • @Oversimplified: Samsung one looks like an Android tablet, but runs full Windows 10.

One port is the price of a 2 in 1. The SP4 should be no different.

Your assessment of it is fair enough. It basically looks like the Note Pro 12.2 but running Windows and Core M3. It does have a keyboard cover though.

        • @lostn: One USB-C port that does everything including charging (think of Macbook). At least Surface Pro series have a port for monitors, an USB port and a port for charging.

It should've been an android tablet. As an Android tablet, I do see few of the irks I have as not problematic but, as a Windows tablet, those irks make me recommend SP4 over TabPro S. I personally see the device almost as a first gen device.

        • @Oversimplified: I think MS has some kind of hub attachment that has more ports.. except it costs like $200 USD. Yikes.

        • @lostn: Yeah, but that's optional and that's if you want to more ports. Surface Pro 3 with 1 USB port barely works as a laptop (I still find it annoying, if I want a USB HDD, I need to unplug my mouse), I hate to think what I'd do with something that I can't even use the USB port with while charging.

I do know Samsung is offering a dock as an option for more ports as well, but a device that boasts its portability shouldn't need a USB hub or a dock for them to function as what most people buy them to use it for.

        • @Oversimplified: Use a bluetooth mouse, or buy a cheap hub?

        • @lostn: Samsung one boasts its protability and if I need to carry around a USB hub to be able to charge while using the USB port, I'd question its claim on portability a bit. I do agree that they don't add much, but why do I need to buy something and carry around something that requires one when I could have something that doesn't (besides, can you get a USB hub that can also support display?). It fails as a laptop in that regard, which I think what Windows tablets should not do; they cannot compete with ARM tablets just as a tablet in my opinion.

Though it's my opinion, I am sure there would be people who wouldn't mind carrying a USB hub around.

About Bluetooth mouse, I did consider getting one, but most of the times, I can get by without requiring a USB port for USB HDD or a USB memory stick. I might grab one when MS does its cashback event.
