Do you reckon RAM should be 8GB minimum?

    • +2

      Absolutely.

  • Anyone have firsthand experience with the i5-6300HQ processor? How is the battery life?
It has a TDP of 45W whereas the others are at 15W

  • +1

Should mention that for the first item: "1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive + 32GB Solid State Drive". I was in shock when I saw the proce for 32GB HDD.

    • Thanks for pointing this out, fixed.

  • +1

If you can hold out for it, wait for the i7. I love my XPS 15.

    • +1

Whats the percentage increase in performance between the i5 and i7?

      • +1

A valid point, for some reason I had it in my mind they were using the older generation i5 CPUs. These benchmarks indicate a 25% increase in performance and twice as many threads, but like many benchmarks, they are synthetic: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-vs-Intel-Core-i…

I got my i7 XPS 15 for a smidge under $2K in the November eBay deal. This is the same deal: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-15-6th-Gen-i7-6700HQ-Qua…

I also suggest skipping the 4K screen (which can be between $500-$800 more), it's wasted on a laptop this size. However, the upgrade you should go for is the 84Wh battery (I had to purchase mine directly through Dell for $165, but you can probably get them to throw it in), I now get upwards of 8 hours between charges, depending on use of course.

        • It all stems down to what you're using it for.
But for myself, I just want that sweet thunderbolt port. Sell computer and save the graphics card, then buy that graphics amplifier. Beats having a laptop and computer.

          @Cheapchips:

          Agreed. I run 2 x QHD Dell U2515H off the USB-C port… It's fabulous. :D

Dell have also just released the Dock and Thunderbolt Dock too.

        • Good to know they'll sell the HDD bay battery seperately

        • @Merlict:

Harder to come by than you'd think. Not that it matters, M2 drives are the way of the future anyway.

        • +1

The 84Wh battery will also take up the 2.5in HDD bay, worth keeping in mind

  • First time to know there is a Quad core laptop i5 CPU! Intel's management must be messy like it's naming system now, a i5 is faster than i7? what kind of marketing/sales will come up that kind of ideas?

If you're interested, read the following article

Pentium? Core i5? Core i7? Making sense of Intel’s convoluted CPU lineup

      • Good article.

    • +1

This has been the case for a long while. All processers that end with U on a laptop are dual cores with hyper threading, even if they are i7's. Anything that is HQ or MQ are quad cores with the i7's being quad cores with hyper threading.

    • +1

Look at the Letter at the end of the 4 digit number.

      Core M3, m5, m7 - super low tdp
      U - low tdp
HQ - quadcore with Hyper threading
      K - unlocked CPU

      • +1

you didn't get the point, of cause I know what that mean, but are you going to explain all these bullsh!t to a end user like: i7 is better than i5…THIS i5(HQ) is MUCH MUCH faster than THIS i7(U) but cheaper, and that i5 is slower than this i7 and cheaper too, and yes that i7 still faster than THIS i5? WTF is the point to have i7, i5 and i3 line up?

        • +1

Yeah. It's like BMW 3 M being faster than BMW 7 - ridiculous.

        • @AlexF: yeah it's like you sure understand what is BMW 3 series faster than 7 series…then Core i series faster than Core i series not Core M series…ridiculous! LOL

  • 1920x1024 mmmmmmm yes please

  • +1

For what it's worth, the second link which say i5 is actually i7!

    • Fixed, thanks!

  • Finally pulled the trigger.

    • Which model do you buy?

      • +1

        Got the XPS 13 i5-6200U/8GB RAM/256GB SSD/1920x1024 :)

Still pretty expensive, but just glad I got one.
        Excited :)

    Buy XPS 13 i5-6200U/8GB RAM/256GB SSD/1920x1024

  • This is being shipped from overseas, I would assume duties would apply since it's over $1000?

    • +1

As stated in Payments and Delivery

This laptop is built to order in our overseas factory and sent to our Sydney warehouse for despatch, with Australian warranties and no additional customs duties payable. Delivery time is usually between 9-13 business days depending on proximity from Sydney. Sorry, no pickups are allowed from our warehouse.

    • No. Pretty much everything from Dell comes directly from overseas, they keep very little local stock.

  • question is whether to get the 13 or 15. Cannot decide, whether a bigger screen and extra weight is worth the extra dollars !! ahhhhh

    • I think the 13", i5/8gb/256gb HDD is the best value here, unless you occasionally game on your laptop, bare in mind the 13" has soldered in RAM so if your not happy with 8gb then go for the 15"

      • Hi Dude,

Can you please elaborate ? Why the XPS 13 is the best value here ?

        • If I was to pick one of these and did not want to play games on it, I think the 13"/i5/8gb/256gb model is the best option.

It has a low voltage i5 cpu, so the battery life will be considerably better than the 15" model, and still has a decent amount of processing power.

I don't like the 4gb/128gb HDD model because I would probably fill up the hard drive in a couple of weeks.

The size and portability are appealing for anyone who needs to take their work with them.

The only thing stopping me from buying one is I'm waiting for a Windows laptop that uses a magnetic charging cable, I've broken too many of the old power plugs and can't stand them. (And don't want a mac)

Sorry if that was a bit long winded

  • Am I missing something? This XPS has the same specs as the Inspiron here for $1119.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-7000U-6th-Gen-i5…

So it's $400+ for an XPS chassis, badge and a few extra GB in an SSD cache?

    • +1

The XPS chassis is pretty impressive.. It's uncontroversially the best 13" notebook going around at the moment..

      • +1

Inspiron is 1kg heavier as well.

    • A few small differences.
Dual channel DDR 4 vs DDR 3 ram
      HDD+ssd vs sshd
      2gb vs 4gb gtx 960m

Depends what you want really. Nice looking, light, 'premium' build quality. Or budget. The choice is yours.

  • Hi Guys, looking for a Window-based laptop.

    Is this a good deal:
    Dell XPS 13 Silver 6th Gen i5-6200U 256 GB SSD 8 GB RAM 2.80 GHz Win10 NEW $1899 x 0.8 = $1519

  • The only thing that is stopping me from buying the i7 xps15 is the battery… it's not 84 WH!

    • You could always buy one from Dell and install it, but I believe you would also have to replace the 2.5" ssd with an m.2 ssd because the bigger battery takes up the HDD/ssd space.

      • The weird thing is that, this i7 XPS 15 comes with m.2 SDD, not 2.5" SSD, but still come with 56WHr battery.

        • I didn't realise that. I guess it just means that it's easier to do the upgrade yourself.

I think Dell only offered the 84whr battery on the models equipped with a 512gb ssd, which is kind of sad.

Either way, I'm holding out because I'd like to see them implement a magnetic charger. I don't care if they have to pay Apple, they should just do it.

        • @lyle88:
The magsafe connector is a pain in the butt. I wish apple would get rid of it

        • @phill360: I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side

      • seems like dell ebay store is now selling the 512gb ssd with 16gb ram. with 84Whr battery!

        • Updated, thanks!

  • If you buy a 512gb ssd model what would be the cost to buy a 1tb ssd and install it yourself? I mean there would also be a market for selling off the 512gb ssd on eBay. Just thinking ahead.

  • do the invoices from dell show the original amount without the 20% discount applied? Looking at maybe salary sacrificing one.

  • Did anyone else get the esimated delivery dates yet?
My order on the 15th has an estimate delivery in Sydney CBD of the 5th of April! Looks like they confirmed the order on the 17th and havent even built it yet.

  • How do we go about getting the 1 year subscription for Office 365?
