This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Mod Edit: The purchase of a gift card with a gift card breaches T&Cs and the deal title has therefore been edited to reflect only the guaranteed 10% discount price of $386.10; this is obtainable without breaching T&C (purchasing a discounted gift card at the counter for $429 which costs $386.10 via the permissible payment methods of cash / EFTPOS / credit card and then purchasing the console in store). The original (unguaranteed) deal for $370 is below for those interested with the appropriate warning.

*Unsure if a $429 gift card is possible, you may need to purchase a $420 gift card for $378 and then pay the remaining $9 (making it $387).

Hi all,

IMPORTANT NOTE : ** Please Note: Should the Big W system prevent you from using a Wish Card to purchase a Big W Gift Card, this deal is void…YMMV

First off I'll credit the two following posts which this deal is based off:

Overall BIG W Sales : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237641
Gift Card strategy : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238014

I thought I would post this up with the 'Playstation 4' heading so it comes up easier when searching. In addition, this deal offers a better discount from the Gift Card strategy link above.

STRATEGY

  • Point 1 Step One : Visit cashrewards site (and sign up if you haven't already) and get 5% off Woolworths Wish Gift Cards (http://www.cashrewards.com.au/woolworths-gift-cards)

  • Step Two : Go to Big W between 10/03/16 and 16/03/16 and purchase Big W Gift Cards at 10% off (this part is supposedly against the T&Cs of Wish Card usage, however there are a number of reports saying that the purchasing system does not stop you from doing it)

  • Step Three : Go back into Big W and pick up either the Playstation 4 500gb Console ($429) or the PS4 1TB Console Bundle ($498) and purchase using the Big W Gift Cards

**Depending on the value increments of the Big W Gift Cards, you may not be able to achieve the full 13.6% discount, or you may end up with extra Big W gift card value. (eg. Purchase $400 of Wish Card, Buy $450 of Big W Gift Card @ 10% = $405. Therefore you'll need to spend $5 non-gift card dollars to make up the rest)

COST BREAKDOWN

  • Step One : Pay $95 to receive $100 Wish Card

  • Step Two : Using $90 of Wish Card to purchase $100 Big W Gift Card. $10 remaining value on Wish Card

  • Original Spend of $95 yields total value of $110

  • Overall discount of approximately 13.6%

OVERALL COST OF PS4

  • Playstation 4 500gb Console Only : $370.50 (approx.)
  • Playstation 4 1TB Bundle : $430.10 (approx.)

** Please Note: Should the Big W system prevent you from using a Wish Card to purchase a Big W Gift Card, this deal is void…YMMV
** This gift card strategy could be used for all purchases at Big W and potentially other woolworths affiliated stores if they accept a Big W gift card as payment (reports suggest people have been able to in the past)

  • Good deal bro, but price in title perhaps?

    • +1

Wasn't sure if that would make the title too long? I wasn't too sure which one is more appealing

      edit: I'll try this title

  • Are u sure that BigW allows to use GC to buy GC?

    • No I'm definitely not sure on this.

      See this post:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237641#comment-3515747

Apparently buying GC with GC contravenes the T&Cs however it still is accepted by the machines…

    • Gift card purchases at my local are operator approved, but I have used egift cards to purchase physical gift cards on the grounds that I wanted to give them as gifts.

Never been refused before, but always a first time I guess.

  • Thanks OP, I have looked at the Big W Catalogues and it appears that the 10% discount on gift card is in store only. Has anyone successfully purchased Big W giftcard using this method before?

  • as one of your steps is a 'luck of the draw' step, as there is no guarantee you will be allowed to use the e-gift card to buy the physical one

Means you could end up being stuck with 5% off GC's instead of using the same capital just to buy 10% off ones originally..

So its a risk/reward choice between discounts of a guaranteed 10%, possible 13.6% or being stuck with only 5%

    • Very True!! However, luckily the risk for me is low since I normally shop at Woolies anyway (the question remains as to whether Big W Cards work in Woolworths..if so then I would miss out on 5%).

I wasn't too sure on whether to post this 'deal' based on the inherent risk, but I thought I would anyway just in case someone was game to try.

I will be trying this tomorrow morning. I'll be sure to report back on my experience

edit: I have edited my description of the deal to highlight this 'risk' right from the start

      • thanks @bleemo, we will wait for your good news :)

      • +1

FYI: You can't use BigW cards anywhere else than BigW.

  • just a tip, make sure you buy the big w gift cards through the self serve checkout. In my experience, going to the attended cash register will deny you from paying using the e-gift voucher due to TC blah blah. Good luck!

  • +1

Does anyone have the specific clause that states you can't purchase a GC with a GC? I've had a bit of a read through of this URL but I can't see a clause stating that this is prohibited. If someone could shed some light that would be great.

*assuming that is the latest set of T&Cs…but it was the first link when I googled

    • 3.3 When purchasing Physical Gift Cards at any WISH Gift Card Participating Store, payment can be made via cash, EFTPOS or credit card.

      • +1

That just states that cash, EFTPOS and credit card are all valid payments. It does not state "payment can ONLY be made via cash, EFTPOS or credit card."

        • Sufficed to say if you get turned down it's probably not worth trying to parse the T&C's, as notice came from head office months ago to enforce it. The people still sneaking a few through around here are doing it through unwitting/unknowing operators.

        • @pais: The point I was trying to make above is that the Terms and Conditions you have posted state "3.3 When purchasing Physical Gift Cards at any WISH Gift Card Participating Store, payment can be made via cash, EFTPOS or credit card." Note that it clearly says "payment CAN be made", NOT "payment MUST be made". But if we look at it a different way, and one was to adopt your definition of exclusivity from section 3.3, then you would also be excluded from paying for a GiftCard using a Visa Debit Card; and that is most definitely NOT the case. Similarly, the above statement if using your definition would exclude cheques, prepaid visa and mastercards; again which is not the case.

Hence it is reasonable to assume that the above section 3.3 should not exclude using a gift card as a method of payment. Further to this, since no exclusions have been stated, then the method of payments for gift cards would then default to the payment forms accepted by BigW in its general payment terms, and that includes gift cards as a form of payment. In which case, other than the usual cash, you may pay with any of the following payment methods:

          (i) Woolworths Everyday Money® Credit Card;
          (ii) Visa;
          (iii) MasterCard;
          (iv) American Express; and
          (v) Diners Club; and
(vi) Debit cards displaying a Visa or Mastercard logo
          (vii) Wish Gift cards

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

Visa Debit -> Credit transaction. Prepaid visa & Mastercard -> credit transaction. Cheque actually is excluded FYI, unless purchased online via everydaygiftcards.

Again, communication came down prior to Christmas (from memory, around the time of the last 10% off $100.00 gift cards) to prevent cycling. The T&C's did not change at that time, rather the approach at a store level did to be in line with existing T&C's.

Sorry mate, you can bold whatever you like but you're unfortunately mistaken.

      • That's also talking about "Purchasing Wish Gift Cards" as well? Big W I'm assuming is not exactly a "Wish" card. We'll see I guess

        • The Big W ones are Wish cards

        • @anthonyw: Ah yep I didn't read the definitions section of that document

        • I work for the company. Can confirm it refers to Big W Wish Cards. The people around here still cycling gift cards are doing it through unknowing operators and you're far more likely to get denied than get approved.

        • @pais: Can Big W Wish Cards use in WWS ? Cheers

        • @pais: If you work for the company you would know that BigW cards are most definitely NOT Wish Cards. Wish cards are valid at ANY Woolworths affiliated store including Cellarmaster, Thomas Dux, Masters, Dan Murphy, etc.

Big W Gift Cards are valid AT BIG W ONLY!

Refer here for a list of Woolworths Gift Cards and where they are valid.

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

if you looked at the current promotion you would see that the Big-w cards being discounted 10% are regular 'Wish Cards' despite being labelled 'Big W' cards and can indeed be used at any of the everydaygirftcard sites

        • @SBOB: If you read the comment I was referring to above "Can confirm it refers to Big W Wish Cards".

Wish Cards are NOT BigW cards.

Also where exactly does it show a Wish gift card here?

I quote "10% off THESE Gift Cards"

        • @kenmizuki: Do you mean BWS? If so then no. Big W cards are valid at Big W stores. Refer the link in my previous post for a list of Woolworths gift cards and where they are accepted.

        • +1

          @Tiggrrrrr:

Here are the terms from the Big W card pictured

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/148545/37852/image.jpe…

Works at the stores listed at everydayrewards.com.au

The Big W card pictured in the file you linked is a WISH card, it just doesn't have WISH printed on it.

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

That 'Big W' card shown (and the 5 I bought today) is a 'Big W logo' wish card.. works in every way that a wish card does

        • @anthonyw: I bought 2 Big W gift cards. I tried using it at Woolworths, it did not work. After I asked why it did not work, I was told that Big W are a separate entity to Woolworths. I was then told to refer to everydayrewards.com.au and note that Big W cards are accepted at Big W and nowhere else.

All I am trying to do is make people aware that Big W Gift Cards are NOT Wish cards. Argue with me if you will, but in your own reference to everydayrewards.com.au it clearly states that BigW Gift Cards are accepted at BigW and BigW Vision only.

I just don't want people to purchase a BigW gift card thinking that it can be used outside of BigW.

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

Not sure what the difference is for you. I've been using them at Woolworths, BWS and Big W from the Christmas discount without issue…

It does say at item 9 on the image I posted that WISH card terms and conditions apply.

I guess if it's important for people that they work elsewhere then buy a test card first.

        • +1

@anthonyw: This is what I am referring to

          All Woolworths Stores accept:

          •WISH eGift Cards
          •WISH Gift Cards
          •Essentials Cards
          •Groceries Only Cards
          •Returns Cards
          •Woolworths Money Shopping Cards
          •Woolworths Gift Cards
          •Woolworths Store eGift Cards

          All BIG W Stores accept:
          •WISH eGift Cards
          •WISH Gift Cards
          •Essentials Cards
          •Returns Cards
          •Woolworths Money Shopping Cards
          •BIG W Gift Cards
          •BIG W Store eGift Cards

As I clearly stated, I am making sure that people are aware of the Terms and Conditions pertaining to Big W gift card use.

        • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: That is my understanding too and the reason why I wouldn't put any more money into Big W cards

I do however recall that people who bought Big W cards from the Christmas time sale have been able to use the card to pay for fuel, groceries etc.

  • +1

i have used egift cards to purchase gift cards at big w

  • +1

That's not cheap. I got the 1TB version with Uncharted Collection for less than that last year

    • Yes you're right. In fact 2 or 3 weeks ago it was cheaper.

However, this is the cheapest I've found at this point in time. Happy to be shown something cheaper as I want to pick up a PS4 this week for The Division :)

  • -1

Bless you bleemo for your hard hark

  • So you would have to spend $427.50 for 1TB boundle.

    • Yes

      • I think 1tb bundle is much better value for money.
        What you going to get?

        • Planning on the 500gb. Don't see myself playing a tonne of games so the 500gb should be fine. Plus I don't see myself playing the Drake collection. So the extra $60 wouldn't necessarily be that much of a bonus to me

Although, I could sell the Drake collection…hmmm

  • Is the 1TB console now the same low power version as the 500GB?

  • Are bigw gift cards instant activated or must wait 24hours? can I use the bigw gift card to buy jbhifi gift card?

    • They are instant

    • That's a good idea! I may try this too to get a copy of The Division or Playstation Plus

  • +1

Went to Big W this morning and all went fine. They put through my payment on the gift card using the woollies gift card without any issue. Please remember your luck may be different.

If you go through self checkout, Big W staff still need to key in the value of the card that you wish to purchase.

    • which bigw did you go to?

      • Big W Brickworks in SA

  • how much time Woolworths egift card takes to arrive in ur email?
I know it says 12 hours but does it takes that much time?

    • sorry for the late reply. Mine appeared maybe 3-4 hours after I put the order through

      • I put my order 18 hours before mine hasnt arrived yet.
Its status says Payment pending and I used American Express to pay for this egift card.
        How did you paid yours?

        • Exactly the same way. I put my orders through around midnight as well!

        • @bleemo:

And there is no way you can call them ask them, its just you could email them and wait for reply there too.

  • FYI

If you buy the Big W gift card @10% off, you can then use that card to buy other gift cards in the store. I don't think this practice contravenes the T&Cs ?

I used my Big W gift card to get a JB Hifi card. So effectively I bought JB Hifi gift cards at 10% off.

Playstation Plus and The Division at 10% off anyone??

    • Following your post, I did the same on the weekend. Extra 10% off at JB made me happy.

    • So can I use a 10% card to buy another 10% card?

  • End up buying 1TB PS4. Had lot of fun this long weekend.

My question is does New PS4 comes with 1 year PlayStation Plus membership?

    • No it doesn't. You can get a 14 day trial but after that you will need to purchase a subscription

  • So to buy a 1tb what would I have to pay in $$$ for each stage of purchase?

    • $427.5 1TB bundle
