I guess I'm just poor because I can't really qualify this as ''really cheap''

    • +8

ok, really cheap compare to the retail price.

        • +2

:) no point in commenting about what hw you get for what you pay (apple wise)… you'll just get negg'd … hehehe

        • +3

@scud70: Oh no, downvotes! What will I do without my imaginary internet points?

Just to be clear: this is a significant price reduction from normal retail price so it's a genuine bargain in those terms.

But the point remains valid, even if the Apple-apologists don't like the truth.

        • +1

@klaw81: hahaha didnt you know? thats all that's important in life now? thumbs up or thumps down (basically chuck noris from dodge ball but on the internet..loll)… unfortunately i cant comment, originally i thought this was like a 10% off .. amazing that this is 3k+ RRP ..

        • Yea because gaming really is the MBP’s key selling point right? #sarcasm

        • +6

@dogboy: Or people who want a Unix based OS with amazing battery life, screen, and touchpad. It's really annoying that ignorant people think Macs are less powerful because they don't have the specs of a gaming laptop.

        • -4

@kheob: " It's really annoying that ignorant people think Macs are less powerful because they don't have the specs of a gaming laptop"

That's exactly the case. MacBooks ARE, almost by definition, less powerful because they don't have the specs of a gaming laptop. Obviously that's not a problem for some users - if you don't need or want the power of a gaming laptop, that's fine.

But why do they cost so much, if there's no big expensive GPU hardware inside? Quad-core processors (especially 2 generations old CPUs that are widely known to throttle due to overheating) and Retina-grade screens are nothing special in premium laptops these days, and there's no way having a slightly nicer touchpad is worth $600. Must be that glowing symbol on the back….

        • @kheob: It is less powerful. How does a Toyota win a Ferrari?

        • +16

          News flash buddy.

Buy a Macbook Pro for $2200. Claim tax back as a business expense.

Sell Macbook Pro in 3 years time for $1500.

result = free laptop for 3 years.

          Rinse and repeat.

Try that with any Windows laptop.

Im actually up about $100 from selling my Macbook Air and buying a Pro after tax back.

        • +1

@kheob: sorry to say a good TouchPad (I have used many Macs and in wouldn't classify it as amazing or anything) battery, screen or the OS justify a 3k price tag. Please don't call ppl ignorant just because they don't agree with the value you get for money u pay… At this price I'm sure it's a good deal for many Mac users. Personal opinion and I've used Macs, pc, Linux for a very long time.. :)

        • @klaw81: Engineers cost money…. Executives cost more. You're paying for an Apple, not a laptop.

        • +3

@kheob: Damn straight. Never understood it until I actually used the dozens my friends have. They provide an absolutely exceptional experience for everything except gaming. I don't personally game on my laptop, other than a couple indies, so if I had the money I would happily pickup a Macbook Pro Retina and dual boot Windows.

        • +1

@scud70: I'm not even a mac guy, but the mac touchpad is by far (and it's not even close imo) the best on the market. Now I haven't tried every single laptop out there but I bought a new laptop about 6 months ago and of everything I tried mac was the clear winner.

In an ideal world where I could spend 2k on a laptop, I'd buy a macbook 15' and put windows on it, but alas macbooks are way out of my price range.

        • -1

          @thorton82:

Except you need to then disclose the sale of the laptop as income.

Or are you publicly advocating not disclosing this to the Federal Govrnment and committing Fraud which is punishable by 10 years jail as is inciting others to commit fraud on grounds of conspiracy.

In which case your ip and data is logged as part of the new retention policy of meta data in which case the AFP will be looking into this and your past tax decelerations.

        • Hope you know there's a huge difference on how apple products are made compared to others. Specs don't mean anything unless they're on a solid, well made machine. I've had a couple of windows laptops in the past, and max they lasted was 2-3 years. I've had my current macbook for more than 6 years and still going strong.

But it depends on what you need it for, if you want it for gaming obviously not a mac, but I don't game on my macbook, and only use it for running Adobe suite and general use - so this is perfect for me. I can also include how I don't have to run anti virus scans every so often, and get random errors constantly. Apple products are really made to the finest detail.

        • @kheob: or you could get any laptop in the world and run Linux for free

        • @pyjamas: they are definitely made not to be fixed that's for sure. PITA

        • +1

          @klaw81:

I get two computers for the price of one. I even enjoying using one of them.

    • Certainly not cheap, but you are getting a well built premium machine there with high speed PCIE SSD, a marvellous touchpad and long battery life.
I recently bought the HP spectre spec equivalent in 13 inch size which retails for more than this, and it has similar battery life but the trackpad just isn't as good. And I don't like how win 10 resolution scales compared with OSX.
The only thing it has over the MBP would be the touchscreen, but after a couple of months of use I realise I have hardly used touch at all.

Not that a recommend buying a MBP now, I suspect new ones will be out in a fortnight.

Edit: just realised it is a 4770HQ i7, not the current broadwell based MBP. And the skylake will no doubt debut by the end of the month. So just so you know.

      • How do you know it's 4770HQ? I couldn't find it anywhere. Besides, it comes with Intel Iris Pro Graphics (according to ebay product description), and wikipedia only list Iris Pro under Broadwell section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_HD_and_Iris_Graphics

        • The details specs for this Macbook Pro MJLQ2. You'll find it out in the specs.

        • Thank you! Very useful finding.

It also shows that this machine comes with Iris Pro 5200 graphics. To get an idea how fast is it: this site says it has roughly 10% performance of a Nvidia GTX 980 Ti:

  • How does warranty works for apple grey import? The seller not accepting returns, big company like kogan not accepting returns just concerns their trust in items theys are selling.

    • +4

I had the screen for my Kogan-bought 2014 MacBook Air replaced at the apple store in Adelaide no questions asked. From memory MacBooks have 1 year international warranty

    • +3

Kogan.com will always accept returns for any manufacturer faults and defects on purchases.
3rd party products, such as Apple MacBooks, cannot be returned simply for "change of mind" reasons.
More on our returns policy here

  • +2

As a grey import will this incur a 10% GST when going through customs?

    • +1

I believe it's not the source of the item that determines if GST needs to be paid but rather the total cost of the item.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

      • -3

It is now GST payable regardless of import source. Only those below 50 bucks are excluded.

However I have been buying supplements overseas (US) without being nagged for GST however.

        • +6

Since when was it below 50? It is still $1000 I believe until the new ridiculous bill passes. Unless I missed the news?

Went to check it starts 1 July 2017.

        • +1

@Letrico: it's not legislated yet so it may start never haha.

        • +1

@Letrico: really? I must be living ahead LOL. Sorry for the confused message :

    • Check the line on the bottom of the list.

"This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan Australia Pty Ltd pursuant to the Terms and Conditions."

by Kogan Australia, not Kogan Hong Kong. IS IT = No import duty or tax apply?

    What's in the box

    Apple 15” MacBook Pro MJLQ2 (2.2GHz i7. 256GB)
    Charger
    AU/NZ Compliant Generic Adapter

    Ummm… what???

    • Yeah they have those slide in adapter points into the block don't they?

      • Yup that would be the original power adapter so not sure what generic crap they're including with their product.

      • +2

It's a grey import so the slide in adapter would be for a non-Australian plug. Hence the need for an adapter.

        • You don't need to buy one out of the pocket. Kogan supplies one for you

          AU/NZ Compliant Generic Adapter

          Edit:

          NVM, it's mentioned already.

        • +1

In other words, the charger is not australian one right? it will always need the adapter? Seems a bit annoying to be carrying it everywhere…

        • +1

          @CrazyMexican:
The chargers are the same, it is just the end bit that can be changed. So if Kogan supplies an Aussie one then it's no different, no extra bits to carry around.

        • @viggenn: From my past experience, they supplied the original Apple HK charger (same as UK) and additional adapter (cheapo one) to convert from UK to Australian plug. They don't replace that power part (of the Apple charger) itself, if that's what u mean. There's an extra bits for both ipad/iphone that I bought from them.

        • +1

          @viggenn:

There WILL be extra bits to carry around and it'll look like this: http://imgur.com/sMAsYet

Of course if you had an extra AU plug you can replace the UK plug directly. THEN you will have no extra bits to carry around :)

  • What quad-core i7 is it? Tried to look at specs with the reference code but I can't find the processor model.
Thinking of getting this as they have good resale value and I'll sell at the end of the year and buy a decent portable gaming rig when the new Nvidia carda are released and VR takes off.

      • I just looked it up myself came out in mid 2014. I think you're right. I wonder why Apple don't display full codes under their tech specs, it seems like a snobbish attitude towards their customers. Almost like they don't think that we will want to bother knowing what it is (so long as it's a quad i7).

Decent specs with the screen and SSD pity it doesn't have a dedicated card, DDR4 ram but it's not a fully fledged gaming machine.

        • +5

          snobbish? no, never.

You're obviously just reading it wrong.

        • @sabaramo:

          what?

        • Dedicated card would definitely be nice at the price, even something basic like a 940m, but DDR4 isn't even possible until they do a Skylake refresh this year.

    • Keep in mind that Skylake MacBook Pro's are due out either at the Apple event in 2 weeks or around May/June.

  • +1

Well done! Even cheaper than Apple official refurbished one

    Refurbished 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display $2,239

  • -5

    Ewww…..gross.

Just wait for the new macbook pro 15. YOu won't have to wait more than 3 months for a new macbook pro 15. I personally think they'll introduce the new macbooks and 13" pros in 11 days.

    • +2

good luck getting a new macbook pro for $2.1K.

I'm guessing they're going to be more expensive than ever for the top spec (Aussie dollar and all).

I reckon we're gonna crack the $4k mark for the top spec ones.

The equivalent to this will be mid $3k.

If you're into the apple thing, and need a laptop, this seems like a no brainer.

The new one will probably have: -

      1. less ports (ala macbook)
      2. no magsafe (ala macbook)
      3. better battery life (this is the only real advantage as the new chips are very power efficient)
      4. marginally better processor performance (think 5-10% at most)

anyway, this is a good deal regardless.

        • +2
          1. top spec without any additions (currently $3,799). The new one will crack $4k I guess….
          2. i never said "no magsafe" is a bad thing
          3. the processor is already out in other machines, just have a look yourself. regardless, the cpu unlikely to be a deciding factor for performance reasons (more for battery)

Obviously, I can't see into the future, but I cant really see it being any different. My opinion.

Not sure what you're saying though. The new one will obviously be shinier, newer and faster, is it worth another $1500? I don't think so, but I am sure that others here will.

        • -7

          @sabaramo:

          1. With additions it's $4900.

the cpu unlikely to be a deciding factor for performance reasons

          1. I have a quad core skylake. It's definitely not a 10% increase in performance. The deciding factor is that its a new processor with increased performance and battery life. The deciding factor is that it's A LOT newer. Just because you are narrow minded doesn't mean others are.

          2. A lot of people I know who own macbook pro 15 aren't exactly poor, so the cost is justified. Most of them are professionals.

        • +10

          @cDNA:

To all my fellow OzBargainers, I hereby withdraw any statement made not in compliance with the Hounourable cDNA.

As he commands supreme say in these lands, we must unite to defend him and banish all that oppose.

I petition the fair and subservient people of cDNAville to purchase the the latest Apple Macbook Pro in direct compliance with our leader.

Do not under any circumstance circumvent the approval process his highness demands or you will be hung by the neck.

      • Not more expensive than ever. In 1998 I bought a wall street PowerBook G3 (I upspecced with third party ram to a total 96mb!!) which if I had bought in Oz would have cost me $5700.
I bought in the US for less than that including airfare, about $5000 in total.
Pre GST days when you were reamed by WST.

        • Haha, with inflation that's about a million dollars

  • +1

As others have suggested, I would wait. When the new stuff is introduced these will drop in price anyway.

    http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Retina_MacBook_Pro

    • I somehow still don't think the price would be cheaper than this deal though.

  • Just sold my 2015 16/512gb for $2950, got it for $3100 new last August. They just run too hot, not a laptop, very fast and smooth though. I would wait for Skylake may be cooler, bought a 27" 5K iMac and it doesnt even get warm.

    • Something wrong with it, my 16/512 15 inch pro doesn't run hot at all.

      • Yes they do have had 2, sit it on your lap for a while.

        • On my lap right now. Cool as a cucumber. If I was doing some intensive work it will get warm, but not hot.

    • I've found my friend's Macbooks run extremely cool. Must have been an issue.

    • The only time mine gets warm is when pushing it with Photoshop, or running Tomb Raider in bootcamp where the thing feels like it's gonna melt through the table.

All in all I love the unit, and I'm not even a massive Mac devotee…

  • Just wondering if I can get tax refund coz I might go overseas, does the price contain GST even if it is a grey imported product.

    • I don't think so.

      • +1

There's no GST from any phone that I bought from Kogan

        • +2

Have you bought any phones for more than $1000?

        • Alright, it's a good price anyway.

  • I don't know if it's worth getting the 2.2GHz or the 2.5GHz. Considering the new Macbook's will be out soon, so the prices of 2.5GHz will come down too. I'm a web designer with programs like photoshop open often, a text editor and 50 browser tabs (and sometimes spotify). I every now and then use some heavy programs for video editing, but not often.

I have a 2009 model with 2.53GHz intel core 2 due with 8gig ram, and it's still working quite well except for the major lag. I've had this for more than 6 years.

I'm hoping for a macbook pro that would last me just as long or more as my current model, but with a lot less lag. Also how much cheaper do these laptops get once a new model is out?

  • -2
    • What does this have to do with the deal?

  • Where are these from? In my experience Apple has pretty much brought their international pricing into alignment compare to years ago when I got my full specced out Macbook Pro from Hong Kong for well over $1000 cheaper than Australia.

    • I would like to know this too, anyone know where I can get these details from? Why is it so cheap on Kogan. Especially when it comes to Apple, rarely get things this cheap.

  • Can't resist the price. Brought one. Thanks OP :)

  • bought one too. way too cheap. this can be sold in a few years for same price!

  • Bought a 13" for the missus for about $1,514.40, saving $378.59, not to shabby for: Apple 13" MacBook Pro MF839 (2.7GHz i5, 128GB). Cheers OP.

Anyone received there's yet? How long does Kogan take to post to metro/City area from day of sale. A week, a month?

  • Same here. I ordered it but so far there is no despatch notice from kogan.

    • +1

It says expected dispatch 31st March. Waiting … …

      • Mine came today!

        • impressions?

        • Pretty standard in my opinion, box came with various adapters but not sure if that's standard as well..
No signs of it being used or second hand, as box was new and wrapped.

        • Got it yesterday. Come with Australia standard plug to the power adapter. Part of the original cord can't be used unless you use another plug adapter.

        • When did you order it? I'm still waiting…

  • My order arrived Monday. Working smoothly so far.

For those of you that can claim this as a business expense or get GST back via the TRS, remember to request an invoice. I did not receive any invoice via email and no physical invoice was attached with the delivery either.

Requested it through eBay messages and received the invoice in my email shortly.

    https://imgur.com/a/JQY9o

Saving another $246 on top of that makes this truely a great deal.

  • Still waiting for mine to be posted!!!!!! I paid in full mid March!!! Not very happy!!!

    • did you ever receive it?

      • just received it 2 days ago. all good. just very long time to wait
