  • That's cheap for a full HD screen. Does it support band 28 28 700mhz?

Some might complain about 16g memory but some people might find it ok looks like a nice phone for the price.

    • nothing unless it's for Oz market gets band 28

      • +4

and Japan, Taiwan, Maldives, New Zealand, PNG, Panama
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks

Not many countries, but more than just Oz.

I bought my Asus Zenfone 2 from a Taiwanese eBay seller and it works with band 28 here.

Having said that, the spec shown on the Mobileciti website does not include band 28 so I would conclude the R5 does not support it unless someone can prove otherwise.

        • Thanks, you're right.

Looks like better value for money than the Moto G 2015 for 268 at first glance…however, this phone does not have a 3.5mm audio jack. The package includes a micro-USB to 3.5mm adaptor but it does mean an extra accessory to deal with.

Also, batter life is poor as, and audio quality is lacklustre too.

    • +5

No 3.5mm audio???? That is weird! I guess I'll continue my search for a LG G3 855 32gb for under $300.

      • The box includes an adapter for micro usb to 3.5mm but the audio quality is pretty crappy as well according to GSMArena.

      • +1

It's too thin for std headphone jack same problem apple are facing in the future

        • +27

I doubt Apple consider that a problem. They are probably relishing the thought of all the extra money they'll make by selling headphones with a different plug.

        • +3

Given Apples lack of innovation they will just sit back and wait for someone else to make a solution, steal it and then sue

@4agte: You are an Android Fan, I suppose. Are you also a labour and Trump supporter as well??

        • @noramando:

wow you can tell all that by my non-related comment?! I can make a lot more solid assumptions based on yours

        • @4agte: oh yer. Love to hear from you. Promise it would be a joyful experience to me.

@Russ: looks like they are going lightning port only: http://www.cnet.com/au/news/would-it-be-a-mistake-for-apple-…

    • +8

Ok the lack of 3.5mm audio from the get-go is a dealbreaker.

      • The future is wireless! Break away from ye shackles!

        • +2

          Audiophiles will disagree.

        • I don't want to have to charge another thing in my life!

        • @CLoSeR:

Yeah but audiophiles pay 90% more for 10% performance so who cares what they think.

  • How does this compare to xiaomi redmi note 2/3

    • -1

if you compare to note 3.. the processor is same, RAM is more on note 3 (3 GB version).. note 3 has expandable memory.. Am not sure about the sensors comparison, but am inclined to think Note 3 has more than this, including finger print.

      Cheers!

      • this phone has an amoled display whereas the redmi note 3 does not

      • Thanks

      • +1

if you compare to note 3.. the processor is same

Processors are not same, Redmi Note 3 Pro has SD650, this has SD615

      • Not all note 3's have expandable memory

        • Exactly, only the note 3 pro has a tf card slot. The sd652 processor would run rings around the sd615. Note 2 has tf slot plus 2 independent sim slots and runs the mediated helio x10 processor which is also much quicker than the sd615

        • @cureforanitch:

So note 2 should be the better choice in terms of specs?

        • @wildstone: specs yes. Can't comment on things like the camera and build quality

        • @cureforanitch: the helio x10 processor suffers from wifi drop outs and overheating. I have a Meizu MX5 which uses the helio x10 processor, heaps of problems with wifi. Gaming isnt as smooth as my other phones. Eg.OnePlus One, Nexus 4 all running CM mod. helio x10 processor is definitely a flawed chip.

        • @climaxpower:
I have a redmi note 2 with the x10 and it has no WiFi dropout or overheating issues.

  • ahh if only dual sim

    • Too thin for dual sim

    • +2

All dual sims in the current market will not work anymore in 12 months time. That's because all of them currently can only utilize one 3g/4g slot at any one time, and 2G network is to be shut down in 12 months.

Still waiting manufacturers to upgrade dual sim models to support both 3g/4g at the same time.

      • I believe there are dual lte sim phones such as the LG G4 dual SIM variant.

        • No, no dual sim phones at the moment that can take dual lte 'at the same time'.
It might be dual lte, but that just means either one of the sims can be selected as lte, but not both at the same time.

  • Seems it does band 28 and is one of the thinnest phones around 4.8mm

    • If a phone supports 700MHz 4G, does that mean it supports Band 28?

      • Not necessarily.. there's 2 bands (for Phones) in the 700MHz range.

        • +1

There are at least two, I think there is actually 6.

      • There are at least 2 lte bands that are 700hz. Only the band 28 700hz works here in Australia. I learnt that the hard way

        • Oh wow, Kogan only lists frequencies and not specific band numbers. That makes it quite tricky to buy a 4G capable grey import…

  • R7 was 290 dse before Xmas.

    • +2

Stock was one unit every 10 stores.

      • I can only talk for my local store (Neutral Bay), but they had plenty. They had white and gold and they had the R7 Plus, but I think it was more. I had no problem walking in off the street and buying one.

Dick Smith is currently trying to shift the R7S's as well but I they want $420 for them. I don't think it's enough of an upgrade from the R7.

  • I'm still weighing up if I go Oppo. Looking at an F1 or R7s. I know they aren't really comparable but the R7s might be a little too big for me as my last two phones were the iPhone 4 and the the Xperia z1 compact.
I'm also thinking the Moto g deal that's been posted.

    • If you're on Optus, the F1 (slightly gimped version, no dual SIM, no Telstra frequencies) can be had for $199 from Optus.
apart from the screen resolution, the F1 is a better all round phone in my opinion than the R5.

      • The $199 f1 from Optus is a dual sim and it does support ALL Australian telco lte bands including band 28. It's on their website. Agreed it's a better phone compared to this and cheaper. Just check its not locked

        • Since Telstra and Optus share the same LTE frequencies you're correct.. But the Optus version doesn't support Telstra 850MHz 3G.
So you'll have a data only phone on Telstra since LTE doesn't (currently) carry voice.

As far as Dual SIM goes, the Optus site is wrong, at least according to the Official Oppo Australia Rep on Whilpool
          http://whrl.pl/Rezptr

    • I've had the R7s for about a week - $423 from DSE.
Happy with it so far - replaces a Galaxy Note II.
Comes with a 4A charger and charges very quickly.

  • Crap battery life. Otherwise good price for oppo.

  • Just got the gold version. Wow. Premium feel for a budget price.

EDIT: Mine came with zero charge. Different from phones I've bought in the past. They have this VOOC fast charger thing so time to evaluate the fastcharge.

    • Be prepared to be Blown away!
My wife charges her phone while she eats breakfast!

  • What are people's experiences with this phone so far? (apart from the lack of audio jack)
