Telstra Free Data Day Round 2 (Sunday 3rd April) Including Boost Mobile, ALDI, Woolworths & Telechoice

3771

Another Telstra fail, Time for round two enjoy your data.

We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience we have caused.

We had a problem that triggered a significant number of customers to be disconnected from the network. Reconnecting them to the network caused congestion. We had a connection problem overseas impacting international roaming customers which then had a flow-on effect domestically.

As a way of saying we’re sorry we’ll be providing a free data day for all of our mobile customers on Sunday 3rd of April.

Telstra CEO Andy Penn told media this morning the outage was caused by network congestion when a large number of services disconnected at the same time and were then reconnected.

Mr Penn said a free data day would be offered on Sunday April 3 to compensate for the disruptions.

Boost Mobile

Some of our mobile customers experienced difficulty making and receiving calls, and using data last night (17 March 2016).

This issue started at around 6pm and we started seeing progressive restoration from around 7.30pm, although the issue was sporadic so different people were impacted at different times.

We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience we have caused again.

As a way of saying we’re sorry we’ll be providing a free data day for all of our mobile customers on Sunday 3 April.

Customers will automatically receive free data, from midnight to midnight in their local Australian time zone.

We hope this helps make up for some of the inconvenience they experienced.

ALDI Mobile thanks to @PeeDee

You may know that due to circumstances beyond our control, our carrier experienced a service disruption on Thursday 17th March.

This outage impacted some of our customers for a short period of time and you may have been unable to make or receive calls, SMS or use data.

Whilst the outage was outside of our control we want to make things right for our customers that were impacted which is why we are giving free data (within Australia) to all of our customers on Sunday 3rd April 2016.

The free data will apply to you regardless of which plan you are on - if you have Pay As You Go, or a Value Pack, you will not be charged for data on this day.

The free data on Sunday will apply from 12am AEDT Sunday 3rd April morning until 3am AEDT Monday morning, this will allow for our customers in WA to also enjoy free data until midnight on Sunday local time in WA.

Telechoice

Free mobile data on Sunday the 3rd of April 2016

On Tuesday 17/03/2016 some TeleChoice customers experienced issues using their voice and data services due to a network outage. While this has now been resolved, we wanted to show our customers that we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Because of this, we are providing our mobile customers with free data within Australia on Sunday the 3rd of April from midnight to midnight (in your local timezone).

This is available to all of our customers, and you do not need to do anything to receive this free data - it will be made available to you automatically. For any more information, please email us at [email protected]

So seeing some people's comment, it might be a good idea to carry around bit more cash than usual on this sunday, just in case the EFTPOS system don't work?

  • Just when I called up Telstra to activate my bloody Gateway Max the outage occurred. Was on the phone for 45 mins then got told someone could assist me by calling the same number I rang to get that person in the first place.

  • Time to do my onedrive video backups, only thought of this last time after the fact.

  • Telstra CEO Andy Penn told media this morning the outage was caused by network congestion when a large number of services disconnected at the same time and were then reconnected.

Isn't that what happened last time?? At least I'll be away from Melbourne this time round so I can take advantage of being able to watch Netflix

    • +1

The CEO is WRONG. That is a plausible reason only to explain that AFTER being fixed there were flow-on problems due to millions of clients reconnecting at once.

He is LYING or is being LIED TO.

CEO please explain WHAT CAUSED THE "large number of services disconnected at the same time".

  • +1

I don't really get how this makes up for the outage in any way. Seems like a marketing exercise for me. Being on a Sunday means they don't have to worry about businesses being affected and it's probably their lowest data usage day usually - costs them zilch.

The people most affected by this outage wouldn't want free data anyway - all the small businesses with eftpos machines for example that lost sales because of this, it doesn't help them at all.

    • +1

Businesses should have redundancy in place for events like these. I know if I relied upon mobile networks, I would.

  • Just reset my PC! Time to re-download my steam library and programs. Have to keep my phone on quickcharge as the standard charger couldn't keep up last data day :s.

  • How about compensation for not being able to make calls? Data is not a substitute.

    • +7

      720 hrs in a 30day month.. 6hr outage is 0.8333%.

      $30 plan - 25c compensation
      $40 plan - 34c
      $50 plan - 42c
      $100 plan - 83c

Ill take the free data day thanks.

      • +3

        de_stroyed

      • +2

My point is more why not do both? Both were affected. It's not about value, it's about the actual service. Give me a day's worth of free data and voice and I'll be happy.

      • 720 hrs in a 30day month.. 6hr outage is 0.8333%.

nope, the outage happened during the only 6 hours i make and receive calls for the month…

        ie. outage is 100%

    • +1

Actually I agree, should be free calls not just free data. I hardly use any data on my mobile but I use it for calls a lot and I was inconvenienced by not being able to make calls and sms’s, not to mention that calls I couldn’t receive. And no not everyone is on an unlimited call plan a lot of us have to pay excess call usage so either give us a free day of everything or possibly compensate us by refunding our most expensive days spend.

  • I don't get why you guys are so excited about this. Don't you have adequate monthly download limits at home?

    • +5

I have unlimited ADSL2+ but with a line speed of 3Mb/s, I might as well have a cap of 100GB per month since that's probably all my internet can muster.

People with Cable or NBN don't know how lucky they are.

      • I have 110-120mbit download at home with Telstra Cable. You're right, I've been taking it for granted, thought most people in the cities have access to it.

        • People outside cities use the internet too

        • You don't live in Perth do you :)

    • Because 100Mbps+ 4GX is much, MUCH faster than the terrible ADSL service I have at home.

      • Good luck seeing 100Mbps on free data day

        • +1

I got those speeds last time through most of the day.

  • +1

I've got unlimited cable at home so I'll just use the service as I normally do just knowing it's not being billed that day. I'll leave the leeching to those who need it more then I do. Their 4G service isn't all that reliable here anyway.

  • Cool, I'll start banking up NZB's now… and setup a scheduler….

I'm in the 2.5MPbs adsl2+ home speed category, and been paying iiNet for a decade for a much much slower connection that the vast majority in metro Melbourne do for the same kind of money…

  • Which of the cheapie phones is best for 4GX?

I couldn't get more than 20Mbit last time around (At the best of times).

    • +1

I pushed 80mbps last time using a Telstra Buzz 4GX (midday). Could probably get better but I'm a fair distance away from the nearest tower.

  • +1

Are we having competition on OzB who can download the most data on Sunday?

  • +1

Can confirm that Boost mobile will also be getting the free data

  • -1

Can someone check whether other network providers will be part of this?

  • My prepaid sim expires before April 3,but i think i may still be able to keep the phone number for about 3months after credit expiry date. Do you think i will still be able to use free data on April 3?

    • +1

      Yes. Should be!

  • i guess a bare bone $2 sim without recharge is eligible?

  • +1

Last time Telechoice customers were eligible for the free data day. Considering the outage affected us as well this time I would expect this to be the case again. But not confirmed and only 3g speed obviously.

  • +1

Why not have it during the Easter long weekend where people are on trips away and need data in rural and country areas?

Why not have the free data prior to 30th March. Foxtel (partly owned by Telstra) are offering free access to all its channels on Foxtel Go up until 30/3.

So many reasons why Telstra should have the free data day this month.

Let there be no doubt the number crunchers chose April 3 for a reason.

    • +1

Let there be no doubt the number crunchers chose April 3 for a reason.

Is that a surprise to anyone?

  • So… States with DST get an extra hour hey…

  • +1

If I buy a data sim just for this, is it eligible for the free download?

    • @Bramasaurus

Did work last time but who knows this time :)

can always activate the $2 sim and take the risk if it does not work unactivated.

BTW Telstra does not mind with prepaid if you put a phone sim in a modem. (currently)
do this all the time myself.

  • So this offer only for customer that on mobile service?

If I've got postpaid and prepaid mobile broadband does it included?

  • +2

Oh wow, I just realised this is a fortnight away and not tomorrow! Luckily, because that would have ended very very badly.

  • With the cost of Telstra plans, I can't see the point of joining them unless the coverage from Optus or Vodafone is poor for your needs.

    • +1

Only reason i joined them. Reception is shocking with everyone else out west.

  • +1

Hey guys, anybody know if Aldi mobile is included in the free data day?

    • +2

I emailed them and like my previous email on the first free data day, said they're not part of it. Then a few days later told me otherwise. So likewise, who knows. Maybe they'll change.

  • So what's the cheapest/fastest 4GX device out there to use this? I feel like it's probably just gonna keep happening

  • Free Data Day Round 2

People will have time to prepare this round.
    Go EC…

  • That's a bit better Tel$tra

We're sorry about your recent Pre-Paid experience. From 10am 2 March to 10pm 3 March all calls, data and SMS' were free but there were two short periods when some of your offer inclusions were consumed. To reimburse you for this, we've applied 1GB of data to your account within the last few hours. To check your balance go to m.telstra.com or call #111#. You will also get free mobile data in Australia midnight to midnight on 3 April to say sorry for the disruption on 17 March. Questions? Go to Telstra.com/ppinfo

  • Sunday.. the day most people don't care for free data.

    • Isn't the weekend the time when people aren't at home, which would make mobile data more useful?

      • +1

You could say the same about M-F. I guess people are never home if you think about it that way.

        • So there's no difference then? Free data M-F will benefit some people, free data on Sunday will benefit other people.

        • @eug:

Most (not all people) work M-F. That's because a lot of places close on weekends. In the case of school… not too many go to school on weekends.

          So in my case,

Weekends, sometimes I'm home, sometimes I'm not. M-F I'm never home.

Almost certainly if the free data day was on a week day it would benefit more people than on a weekend.

          Telstra chose the day strategically.

        • @lostn:

Most (not all people) work M-F.

I would have thought that would be why people wouldn't use as much data on weekdays. They're meant to be working, not downloading large files or watching lots of streaming video.

The argument can go either way.

If it was on a weekday, someone would complain saying "Most people are busy working on weekdays, what's the point? If it was on a Sat/Sun I could binge-watch Netflix/YouTube or download a ton of stuff."

          You just can't please everyone.

          Telstra chose the day strategically.

Of course they did, just like how Vodafone picked a weekend. Just look at how many people are willing to abuse the service. If it was done on a weekday and the downloadfest ended up disrupting business customers, that would be even worse PR.

That still doesn't change the fact that choosing a weekday won't please everyone. Just because it doesn't suit you doesn't mean it doesn't suit "most people".

  • Guys! Can confirm Woolworths mobile will be part of the free data day. I asked them through their online chat. They said a message was also sent out to their customers although I'm not with Woolworths mobile.

    • yes, woolworths mobile sent me by SMS that they give us free data on that day.

  • +1
    • "Telstra chief executive Andy Penn has pledged to provide another free day of mobile downloads to apologise for a national outage that affected more than 8 million customers."

    ANOTHER UPDATE

Due to the problems on the Telstra network today

Telstra will DOUBLE the amount of free data you are allowed to download on Sunday 3rd April…

  • Torrents have been scheduled to start at 12:01am and finish at 11:59pm.

I will have two phones tethered to PC, each network interface binding to one torrent application to saturate two 4Gx connections.

    • Get prepaid sims with nothing on them, it won't be finishing at 11:59 either it will go for a few extra hours. Last time it stopped at 1am for me

    • can you get double speed when you use 2 devices?

      • He's connecting two phones to one computer and running one torrent application per phone interface.

That's as "double speed" as running two separate computers downloading two different things on two different modems. If you have two different things to download at the same time, you can effectively get double speed, assuming the tower has enough resources.

      • Yes. You can even get triple speed through wired broadband connection, given you have at least three torrents to download at the same time.

You can try quadruple the speed with three tethered phones and one wired connection. That might be pushing the limit though. In event Windows viewer, you will see lost of Event ID 4226, the “TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts” error .

    • What program do you use for the network bind, forcebindip never worked for me.

      • I used the built-in network interface binding features. You can run Vuze, qBittorrent and µTorrent and bind each to a different network interface.

  • +1

Telechoice have confirmed on their facebook page they will also have free data

"On Tuesday 17/03/2016 some TeleChoice customers experienced issues using their voice and data services due to a network outage. While this has now been resolved, we wanted to show our customers that we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

    Thou shall have free data!

Now, who can break the 1TB mark? :)

  • +2

    I am not with Telstra

I spoke to telstra and the local telstra shop.

They say the free data is NOT available to new activation's since the outage.

Is this true, or is it just to scare off people buying 2 dollar sims ?

  • did anyone experience a telstra 3g outage yesterday? i did.

  • Two day's outage for me, but only one free data sunday?

  • Can you buy a Telstra prepaid sim and take advantage of the unlimited free data day?? Please please please

  • anyone on ADLI prepaid? I hoping to take advantage for the free data. there's no string attached right?

  • Put on the tin hats for this one, but did anyone stop to think that this is how Telstra and the govt. could catch out a lot of pirates? I'm pooing my pants a little bit about it.
2 quite similar outages in 2 weeks? Nothing suss…

    • +1

Telstra and the government have no obligation towards "catching pirates". It's the responsibility of the IP rights holders.

  • Prepaid SIM active :)

Alarm is set for 11.59pm :)

    (I'd be happy even with 2MB/s - that's still a solid 10x faster than my adsl2+)

    • +1

you don't even have to activate it, just put in the phone and use it

    • Walked into JB and bought a sim. Guy laughed when I asked for one, bet he knew why

  • Aldi Sim…. CHECKED
    Telstra Sim(s)…. CHECKED

    clicks lock and loaded.

  • Wonder if i need to activate the pre-paid sim card.. Lots of people didn't last time and it worked.

    • It would be good. Lets see hey!

    • +1

I can confirm that this is working on an unactivated boost sim :)

      • yeah its working for me too.. not getting great speeds

        • I'm getting 53.57Mbps down :)

        • @triviums: Damn you to hell! I'm getting 5mbps down. Still faster than my asdl2 speed.

  • +1

  • sitting on around 22Mbit currently :)

Great to start the 127GB Quantum download I guess before the Mid week launch :D

    • I've had my eye on this game a while. How did you purchase this? I heard that X1 purchases come with a PC copy too and was hoping to get a cheaper PC copy.

      • 46GB. Pre-order and it will pre-load. PC game bundled with pre-orders up to 4 April. Game available to play from 5 April.

        • Where from though? The Xbox store?
