Telstra Free Data Day Round 2 (Sunday 3rd April) Including Boost Mobile, ALDI, Woolworths & Telechoice

3771

Another Telstra fail, Time for round two enjoy your data.

We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience we have caused.

We had a problem that triggered a significant number of customers to be disconnected from the network. Reconnecting them to the network caused congestion. We had a connection problem overseas impacting international roaming customers which then had a flow-on effect domestically.

As a way of saying we’re sorry we’ll be providing a free data day for all of our mobile customers on Sunday 3rd of April.

Telstra CEO Andy Penn told media this morning the outage was caused by network congestion when a large number of services disconnected at the same time and were then reconnected.

Mr Penn said a free data day would be offered on Sunday April 3 to compensate for the disruptions.

Boost Mobile

Some of our mobile customers experienced difficulty making and receiving calls, and using data last night (17 March 2016).

This issue started at around 6pm and we started seeing progressive restoration from around 7.30pm, although the issue was sporadic so different people were impacted at different times.

We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience we have caused again.

As a way of saying we’re sorry we’ll be providing a free data day for all of our mobile customers on Sunday 3 April.

Customers will automatically receive free data, from midnight to midnight in their local Australian time zone.

We hope this helps make up for some of the inconvenience they experienced.

ALDI Mobile thanks to @PeeDee

You may know that due to circumstances beyond our control, our carrier experienced a service disruption on Thursday 17th March.

This outage impacted some of our customers for a short period of time and you may have been unable to make or receive calls, SMS or use data.

Whilst the outage was outside of our control we want to make things right for our customers that were impacted which is why we are giving free data (within Australia) to all of our customers on Sunday 3rd April 2016.

The free data will apply to you regardless of which plan you are on - if you have Pay As You Go, or a Value Pack, you will not be charged for data on this day.

The free data on Sunday will apply from 12am AEDT Sunday 3rd April morning until 3am AEDT Monday morning, this will allow for our customers in WA to also enjoy free data until midnight on Sunday local time in WA.

Telechoice

Free mobile data on Sunday the 3rd of April 2016

On Tuesday 17/03/2016 some TeleChoice customers experienced issues using their voice and data services due to a network outage. While this has now been resolved, we wanted to show our customers that we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Because of this, we are providing our mobile customers with free data within Australia on Sunday the 3rd of April from midnight to midnight (in your local timezone).

This is available to all of our customers, and you do not need to do anything to receive this free data - it will be made available to you automatically. For any more information, please email us at [email protected]

        • That's a pretty good price. But then what do you do with the xbox version? Guessing you can't sell it since it's attached to the account.

        • @ChillBro:

Yes its all digital locked to your MS account,

I assume you would have had an Xbox if you were looking at the game,

For me I own an Xbox so I plan to play it on Xbox, the PC is just a bonus I guess, maybe buy an xbox :)

        • @brent3000: oh. Was hoping the pc key wouldn't be locked but that's a shame. I have a few x1 games with no console and i had always meant to get one but there's so much stuff to get for pc. E.g. In this year alone I bought a $200 mechanical kb, studio monitors, and I'm about to get an m2 ssd.

        • @ChillBro:

You still get a code it seems for the PC version based on this

          http://www.quantumbreak.com/windows10/

        • @brent3000: is it linked to a ms account though? If not, why aren't more people selling their pc key?

        • @ChillBro: They don't get issued until the games comes out so no one has them yet,

Based on that, they seem to be separate or they would not issue Keys, and maybe people want to play it on PC (like me for example)

I don't know but if you want it on Xbox then that's the best way to get it, anything else is a bonus IMHO

  • And away we go.

  • +7

This time is terrible, slow speeds & lots of dropouts

  • speed is definitely shaped

  • +1

Already at ~8mbps which is hardly worth the hassle.

  • +3

free data day! :) shaped and slow! :(

  • Perhaps a daily outage In exchange for unlimited data daily is where this is heading? :)

  • +2

like last time telstra unactivated sim works.

    • Wish I knew about this before I activated.

  • its shaped and throttled they wont allow you to have that 1800TB again…. my ADSL is better

  • +3

Pointless in Rhodes. Speeds are now worse than ADSL2 which is already terrible.

  • Am also getting a fair bit of drop outs trying to sync my Onedrive and download my Google music. Arghhhh

  • Shaped? Or just massively heavy load? Mine was going decently until an hour ago.

    • Torrent speeds go up then down like a rollercoaster.

  • +1

ADSL is faster than this…. getting only like 150KBps

    • Speedtest.net

      Test 1
      126ms ping
      4.84Mbps (down)
      1.65Mbps (up)

      Test 2
      123ms ping
      3.42Mbps (down)
      2.40Mbps (up)

      My slow ADSL is faster…

      • +1

Previous (on non free data day!)

        57.48 Mbps
        28.86 Mbps

        37 ping.

        • You can probably directly blame all your neighbours for that. :)

      • +1

My pathetic ADSL is about 400KBps(3.5mbps) and this is only reaching 150KBps… kind of ridiculous.

        • +1

My pathetic ADSL is about 600KBps but I am reaching >4.2MBps with my Telstra mobile phone hotspot, so currently downloading away and am happy :)

  • Terrible speed. About on par with my pathetic ADSL. It's throttled for sure. My downloads are bouncing around between 70kps and 400kps, nothing faster than that. This is NOT COMPENSATION.

    • +5

      This is NOT COMPENSATION

Gee, so much anger. They said you'd get a day of free data, and that's exactly what you're getting, aren't you? What genuine losses did you suffer from the outage anyway?

      • +1

Ummm, how about a phone that didn't work. A loss of $700 worth of credit which still hasn't been fixed. Empty promises, like text messages promising to fix, then nothing. I'm not angry, but compensation should be like for like and shaped data simply doesn't cut it.

        • Ummm, how about a phone that didn't work.

What were your actual losses from that outage?

A loss of $700 worth of credit which still hasn't been fixed.

Is that related to the outage that the free data day was for?

          I'm not angry,

The tone of your post certainly sounded like you were. Terrible, pathetic, text in CAPS.

compensation should be like for like and shaped data simply doesn't cut it.

Like for like - does that mean you'd be happy with just 2-3 hours of free normal-speed data?

        • @eug: Move on dude, it's over. BTW, descriptives like terrible and pathetic don't signify anger. Nothing's changed, I'm still of the same opinion that throttled data on a Sunday is an insult to Telstra's customers, both those who suffered genuine losses and those (like me, apparently) who did not. Look on Twitter, it's one pissed off customer after another, and some of those ones could even be described as genuinely ANGRY.

        • @sparkles:

BTW, descriptives like terrible and pathetic don't signify anger.

Maybe you're not aware, but on the internet, typing a sentence in full caps means you're shouting, which denotes anger.

I'm still of the same opinion that throttled data on a Sunday

Is it throttled data, or congestion? The fact that some people still got high speeds tells me it's congestion. You can blame the people around you for congestion. There are probably plenty of people like this around.

      • +4

To be fair "A free day of data" vs "a free day of throttled data" are very different statements.

        • The question is, was it throttled or was it just congestion from the tons of people who simply downloaded things for the heck of it? e.g. people like this.

  • So what are people up to in their downloads, how many gig??

  • Slow as….
Should have started dls at 1201pm last night.
    O well

    • Please re-read your second line and right your wrong.

      • +1

        Lol.
I dont think i can edit.

        0001hrs

  • -7

    94.75 Mbps
    38.16 Mbps

    6 ping.

    And its unlimited 24/7

I do also have several 4g devices 5gb dev null constantly just to DDOS the network because why not.

  • +2

Last night I tested it was 17Mb this morning 6Mb, not worth it. My adsl2+ is much faster.

  • Why does it say tomorrow on the calender thing underneath the post? I got scared for a second.

  • +1

Wow, I'm on 35kps now. shakes head

  • +2

I'm getting around 100kB/s. It's either congested or they deliberately slowed it down.

    • +3

Just look at how many people are downloading crap just for the heck of it. It's no surprise that it'll be slow.

All that publicity given to the largest downloader the last time will only make a whole ton of people try to hammer the network just so they can get the publicity this time.

  • -1

Could someone with Telstra who is not an AFL fan kindly pm me their AFL code?
    See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236861
It would be much appreciated :)

  • +1

    god its horrible speed

  • +2

Usually get around 180mbps+ dl on 4GX at home, same spot around 2am this morning was 85mbps and I just tried again and it's 7.3mbps :/

  • +1

Yep home ADSL is 3x faster at 12mbps.

  • I honestly don't think you could even stream a song with these (lack of) speeds.

  • So, if I were to pick up a $2 telstra simply right now, would I be eligible for free data, or is it only for pre-existing customers?

    • +3

Given the current speeds, it would just be a waste of time.

      • I just moved houses and have no internet til Tuesday… This'll help!

        • Well, it'll definitely be better than nothing.

        • @O15:
So far, so good. Getting 18mpbs on their 4GX in innercity Melbourne!

  • +2

Its not working at its best, but still downloading in between 1.9 Mb/s and 3.2Mb/s .

A lot better than ADSL2 For sure. And unlimited! =)

  • loving the 4G http://imgur.com/UgQsvKV
    201.93 Mbps down, 29.69 up

  • +1

    up to 34GB download

    243.48 Mbps
    54.86 Mbps

    23 ping.

    • Up to 259GB now

      • you suck ;P

  • what are people d/l on their phones ipad etc and how do you get the data from phone etc to HHD

    • Not downloading to their mobile device. Most have their phone/tablet tethered to a PC.

      • Cheers

And are people d/L stuff besides torrents etc

        • +6

This is Australia, of course not.

  • Anyone else getting 4G showing for their Aldimobile sims last night and today??

  • Sometimes my iPhone shows 3G only, does anyone experience the same problem? Anyway, I manily use free data day for uploading because my cable internet at homr has a faster download speed.

  • Speed has definitely been shaped i tried it out in 4 different locations and it is throttled on the upload and download.

  • Shame people woke up! Must be smashing the network :p

Was going strong at 20mb/s overnight but now only getting 2.5mb/s!!

Same as my bad home Adsl2+ but will continue to use on principal!

  • +2

Not using for downloading but instead for uploading pics to Google Photos. Getting 24mb/s upload. 10 times faster than my cable upload speed so happy.

Might be quicker if my SIM was in my phone (4GX device) but using in 4G Telstra My Pocket device.

  • My 4G is really slow right now probably due to traffic. Usually high 800KB/s-1MB streaming but now its sagged to around 100KB/s.

  • +1

    Anyone downloading the internet?

  • +1

My home broadband is already unlimited and I'm getting faster speeds on my adsl2 connection than using 4g. What a waste of time. Last data day was much better.

  • Speed at 12.02am = 50MB/s down 50MB/s up.
    Speed at 12.55pm = 10BM/s down 20MB/s up…

  • 45mbit down at around 12:30, now 8mbit. Definitely being shaped, and seems to be after a certain amount is downloaded on a particular device. I tried a second phone and it had high speeds for a while and has now dropped as well.

    • +3

      did this already

  • +2

Download speed was so high at AM

  • +1

It's pretty bad, i.e. worse than ADSL1 in my area.

Tethered via USB to remove the variable of wifi congestion.

    • Thats strange cause my net speed was faster when its via the opposite

      • USB tether should be faster or the same given the phone is in the same place and receiving the same signal. If you have moved the phone to your computer and the 4G signal is lower, then you are probably better off using wifi tether and finding an optimal location around your residence.

If you live in an area with few wifi signals then wifi should be fine. However, if you live in an apartment or next to one, well, that's another story. I have over 30 wifi signals reaching into my house at any one moment.

I wish there was a way to shield myself from the EMR.

  • +3

Congrats Telstra. I've got poor reception, 1-2 bars of 3G and H most of the time

  • +2

    about 300gb downloaded so far
    speeds are fine for me

    • 259GB @ ~ 250MB/s

Gonna try and hit 1TB by midnight

      • hopefully (:

        • Trying to download as much UHD content as i can

        • @easternculture:

im just doing steam downloads and pulling down heaps of movies etc

        • @easternculture: Why don't people have unlimited plans?

        • +1

          @GameChanger:

I do have unlimited with TPG. Just find thing more fun with a DL speed close to 300MB/s

          currently close to 300GB

        • @easternculture: Fair enough- what does 300MB/s translate to in megabytes per second?

        • @easternculture:
How are you getting 300 MB/s? Are you in a rural area? Low density? And what equipment are you using?
I'm getting around 8 MB/s on an LG G4, according to speedtest.net, in very inner city Sydney. It's very congested, normally around 11 or 12 times faster.

        • @easternculture:

          250MB/s is impossible.
          That's the equivalent of 2000Mbps, or 21000GB in 24hrs.

I guess you mean 250Mbps. That's higher than I've ever seen on 4G, and the equivalent of 31MB/s, or 2600GB in 24hrs.

If you've downloaded 259GB from 2300 the day before to 1445 on Sunday, that's (rounded) 17hrs (incl the DST win). That's the equivalent of a 34.8Mbps average or 4.35MB/s. Sustained for the day, so 29hrs (2300 to 0300, so 4hrs extra plus 1 more for DST), would give you 444GB.

~35Mbps sustained average on a congested day is doing OK, I think. Personally I did a little better, but I used 2 devices.

  • +3

1.5mbps (yes, megabits). Even my 4K adsl line is faster :(. Funnily, 3G and 4G speeds are identical…

EDIT: opened a window and placed the phone there and my speeds are up to 15mbps :D

  •

  • Speed has increased a bit from midday though. I think midday was the slowest period.

  • The day is going into the 3/4 … must say "Thanks Telstra". Although have been experiencing quite abit of drop-outs (having to reset the ZTE mobile modem, I'm very happy with the download speeds that I'm getting —- slightly over 1mb/s. As compared to my daily TPG max of 350kb/s, this is like insane superhighway speed!

    Thanks again Telstra =p

  • Is speedtest.net down for everyone? Is that what people have been doing with their free data?

  • iPhone 6
    4g Telstra
    30mbps down. 35mbps up

    EZ downloads
