Tempted, but this does not support 4GX (band 28). Such a shame LG didn't bring this to the Australian market.

    • You can get Band 28 versions of the V10 on ebay from reputable sellers. A few guys from OCAU got them no probs.

      • Hmm… got a link? Since my Z3 is starting to act up now (literally 3 days after I praised the damn phone on Ozb for being reliable), I was thinking of getting either the G5 or the HTC 10, If there is a band 28 version of V10 somewhere I'm interested.

Found out the LG V10 H960 H962 is supposed to support band 28… need to look into this =) Thanks!

      4GX is slower isn't it?

My device is rated at 150/50 down up, though Telstra states 2-75mbps on it's 4GX network for a cat4 device. I already get ~148mbps in the capital cities on non-4GX bands?

      • In 4GX areas, typical download speeds are 2-75Mbps for 4GX category 4 devices, 2-100Mbps for 4GX category 6 devices and 5-150Mbps for 4GX category 9 devices.
With a Telstra 4G device in 4G areas, typical download speeds are 2 – 50Mbps.

Direct from Telstra website. I don't know what you're using for the tests with non 4GX, because personally, I've never seen 4G speed higher than 40mbps

        • Turns out my phone actually supports 4GX, just the band numbers are different… Using a sony xperia z2 and have never really seen below 120mbps in the city, usually tests at 140+.

        • @dyl: haha you must have really good reception… I've tried on my Z3 and never get more than 40mbps for 4G and never over 60mbps for 4GX.

        • @ProjectZero: this was in Adelaide, not sure overly about Melbourne.. Never been there with enough spare data for a speed test. As for Sydney, I've not been there for about 15 years so wouldnt have a clue.

    Isn't the G5 the G4 for 2016?

    • No G5 is the G5 but V10 is the G4 :p

      • +1

In terms of popularity and sales v10 is on par with G4. G5 is not out yet but the initial review is not great

        • +1

I didn't realise the V10 was doing that well in sales; think you'll find the G4 has sold far more units.

Affordability of the G4 certainly helps.

  • What is the different between G4 and V10 and G5?

    • G4 is 5.5" and the V10 is 5.7" - I believe they have the same or similar specs
G5 is 5.2/5.3" - This is the latest one coming out in April, so the hardware in this is higher end

      • V10 have the sub screen(secondary screen) right?

        • Yeah, forgot to mention that feature lol

      • Apparently it's got the best audio chip in a phone??

        • I don't know about that, but I know it has the built in DAC… not too sure if the G4 has one though.

G5 has taken the DAC chip out but replaced it with a modular DAC add-on.

        • +4

LG haven't dropped their DACs - all phones have a DAC, otherwise there would be no sound.

          boom-tish

        • Correct its regarded as the best DAC in a mobile device

        • @ellave: I bet my SL42 gives it a run for its money

        • +1

          @McFly:

          LG haven't dropped their DACs

You'd hope not. That sounds rather lewd.

        • +1

Apparently when your not running stock android apps the DAC doesn't work so it just uses the internal one as such it is basically useless. UNLESSS you install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phascinate… which allows it to be used in other apps. Root not required by the looks of things.

        • +1

@ProjectZero: G5 has an external module that bypasses the internal DAC that came with Snapdragon 820 (SoC - System on a Chip, it includes Image Signal Processor, DAC along with other things). V10 does the same as well. I think the B&O module (the modular DAC you are talking about) uses similar if not same DAC as V10, though I did hear G5's B&O module is better with few things (which I probably should've paid more attention to).

    • In the V10 there is a second camera for wide angle selfies (group shots). So now you don't have to be vain all by yourself ;-)

  • +2

I want this phone so badly but I'm going to wait a little longer I think.

The build quality looks phenomenal - stainless steel frame and double layered glass.

The camera quality is reportedly second to none, the second DAC/amp really appeals to me, and I love the colour accuracy of LG's IPS screens.

For my needs, that some serious smartphone right there (and personally I don't mind that it's last years SOC, performance has plateaued so much in recent years).

    • +1

      only if it has band28

      • qd_au on ebay sells the LG V10 H962 for $729 delivered.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-LG-V10-H962-4GB-64GB-5-7-Inch…

Just waiting for perhaps a 20% off or something now… Still, comparing the SD808 to SD820, the G5 might have a bit of an edge on performance…

        • Yeah, I'm sure it'll be incrementally better, but that stopped being an issue for me around the G3 era. Not much of a gamer but I do multitask and abuse browser tabs a lot…

  • …aaaand I just bought the G4 an hour ago. I wish this was released locally… Oh well.

    • You can buy it from Optus locally.

      • Really? Do they have them in stores? Would like to demo one…

        • Man I think im getting confused. Sorry, IT was the Blackberry they were selling @ Optus. not the V10.

  • +3

A friend of mind has this phone - i really elegant and classy looking phone compared to the LG G4.
That secondary display is just as useless as the side displays on the galaxy edges though lol

    • So that means G4 still the BEST VALUE phone out there, wspecially with kogan 20% off.

Removable battery is a very useful feature if you want a long lasting battery life espwcially as a substitute for Travelling DSR camera

  • +1

As a current owner for a G4, I don't feel the V10 is an upgrade IMO. It is just not worth it to pay all this $$$$ for a 5.7 screen + fingerprint + DAC. All other specs are the same as the G4.

    • The build quality is significantly different. Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with the G2/3/4 (had them all), but this thing is a tank (in a good way).

Not for everyone I guess and it definitely is expensive by Android standards…

    • You forget the wide angle selfie cam so you can include your friends in your vanity or show off more of where you are when you take a selfish I mean selfie.

    • If you're in the market for a big phone (>5.5), this is a much better phone than nexus6p.

but yeah if size is not a requirement g4 is doing just fine.

  • I wonder if MM kills the Bluetooth in this phone too?

    • MM?

      • +1

        Marshmallow - Android 6.0

        • Aah, obvious sorry…

  • This is dual sim right? Can it do both 3g at the same time?

    • Single SIM. The S is dual (2G on second.)
If there is any phone with dual active 3G then I've never heard of it…

      • Yeah that's what I thought, didn't think there is a phone yet with dual active 3G. The date line is less than a year now before current dual sim phones become useless.

        • I'm fairly sure the Moto G is dual active 3G.

        • @Owler:

Dual active 3G as in 3G on both, at the same time. Can you confirm?

        • @wildstone:

Well I only have 1 sim at the moment but it works on 3G in either slot. When I had 2 sims in you can select which one for data in the settings.

Mine is the Moto G 2nd Gen

        • @Owler:

That's right, it can have 3G on either slot, but not both. So when carriers shut down 2G, one of the slots will not work anymore.

As far as I know, all phones in the market can only do 4G/3G on one and 2G on the other. It cannot do 3G/4G on both. It can do either one, but not both.

  • this thang weighs almost 200g.

i love this phone but 2 major problems:

    1. Phone too heavy for 1 hand operation, approx 200Grams!
    2. LG is well known for extremely poor updates and bug fixing. There are well known major issues with v10 marshmallow update and LG has been ignoring. THey did same with g2 and g3, they ruined both phones after the last update
    • LG is not slow for updates, Samsung S6 owners still don't have Marshmallow! Sony has only just released in the past month. I'm not experiencing any issues with MM on my G4.

    • I don't know about your experience but my G4 (Grey from Taiwan) received Marshmallow 3 months after it was released.

      • +1

You are also lucky that your H815 TWN did not suffer the bluetooth of death bug with the MM update. Mine has no bluetooth until LG roll out the March Android update …. Which may not ever happen :(

      • Yep, had MM on my H815 TWN since December.

    • LG sorted out their slow upgrading policy years ago. I also much prefer their (reasonably lightweight) skin compared to the competition (namely Samsung).

LG cop so much undue flack IMHO…

      • Certainly feels cleaner and closer to native Android than my Samsung did.

        • Samsung is probably the most heaviest skin of android… comparing my S3 and Note 2 to my Sony Z3 is like night and day…

The Samsung's will always feel cluttered but that's part of their offering as well so it might suit some people.

        • @ProjectZero: Those are ancient phones. Samsung cleaned up Touchwiz dramatically from the S5 onwards. Reviewers generally don't complain about it nowadays.

        • @eug: It's still heavily modified from stock Android though. While I don't get the hype behind stock Android that much (Probably because CM left me a bad impression on it and I need a Nexus to truly experience it), I don't think anyone can deny that Samsung fiddles with Android a lot (i.e. things like Xposed took awhile for Samsung firmwares, because of the changes to ART runtime etc).

        • @Oversimplified: I personally find CM11 works a treat on my S3, what didn't you like about it? Aside from there being no blocking/DnD mode I'm quite happy.

@eug: I don't have any plans to go back to Samsung anytime soon due to the lack of removable battery (I really need this after the recent fiasco with my Z3, I think having a removable battery would be safer for resetting purposes). Personally I quite enjoyed TW as an OS, but the phone started slowing down as more and more TW updates piled on. In the end, it was so sluggish, I rooted my S3 and flashed CM on it. Since then, my phone hasn't slow down much, admittedly, the phone is starting to show it's age but quite fast in the transitions as opposed to the TW days. Maybe this has changed now considering phones are getting faster and faster?

        • @ProjectZero: Mainly stability, UI (not how it looks but where everything was) and features. I found CM to be very all over the place with its features and it lacked fair bit of features that I consider essential. Besides, I found debloated TW based custom ROMs to be reasonably similar with its performance. Stability was the thing that made me go, I can't stand it, I am going back to custom ROM based on TW. Similar thing happened with my girlfriend with her LG phone, so yeah.

This was with S4 Active. I found TW on S6 to be decent enough to not really do much on it nor require me to go "I need to root this crap". S6 got rid of most of the junks that I never used anyways.

I'd probably grab a Nexus tablet this year (if there is any). All the Nexus devices have come out in a weird time for me to buy them (either I wasn't looking for its size, I bought something in its place or they were too old by the time I wanted a new one), hopefully a small tablet version of Nexus do come out this year.

      • diSAGREE, as someone who owned LG G2 for a long time, updates by LG have been horrible. Well known factor all over forums. Nexus, Sony and Motorola are best when it comes to updates

Phone too heavy for 1 hand operation, approx 200Grams!

Might need to hit the gym, mate!

  • Wow 200g - this thing needs to go paleo… or maybe grapefruit.

    • Grapefruit is just fructose. The phone might lose weight but it'll also lose a lot of muscle/strength.

  • QuadBeat 3 is a good earphone that I have decided to settle on for my budget earphone category, it's lovely and it's hard to fault. Except its horrid, monstrously bad earphone tips. They makes it neigh impossible to have a proper fit, which makes the earphone to sound awful (never in my life I've experienced earphone tips as awful as that). I chucked them all out and use earphone tips from my collection.

V10 has a QuadBeat 3 which was tuned by AKG. I've heard nothing but compliments for it. While I don't think it should be a sales point for it, I am slightly sad that no one is mentioning that bit of info.

Huawei nexus 6P much better option than this, in every way.

  • DAC doesnt work on wireless headphones, only wired

    • DAC = Digital to Analog Converter.

Besides, the sales point of the DAC probably would apply more to those people who wants to use their phone with high impedance headphones or low impedance, sensitive multi-BA earphones.

While I liked the idea of having a decent DAC (and something that can drive a lot of high impedance devices), I never understood the point of advertising 32 bit DAC, when 32 bit files are a rarity (and it's more to do with volume). Besides, I've heard from few articles that V10 cannot decode 32 bit files, even though the hardware supports it, so only time it uses that feature is when it upscales music files.

      • Yes it can't decode 32 bit

  • It depends on how much you value things like the DAC, an easy to replace battery, the shock proofing, and sd card slot etc

If you prefer vanilla Android with excellent software support, stereo front facing speakers, a better camera for low light but lacking ois for some shakier video recording and don't care about the audio output quality or the need for extra storage than the nexus 6P could be your choice. Saying it's better in every way when each offer significant differences to distinguish from each other mean it comes to personal preference on how much you value the differences in each phone. I personally would choose the LG over the nexus because I prefer better audio output quality, a replaceable battery and expandable storage. Things that unfortunately aren't in the Nexus. :)
