I visited Big W in Melton, Melbourne, and noticed a 50% off Optus prepaid devices sign.

So naturally i bought the best device they sold, the Optus Oppo F1 for 99.50 (RRP is 199). Receipt - see note below.

Its octa core and i must admit i am damn impressed

They also had a heap of clearance items in store but no games worth mentioning.

Mod: Users have reported that 50% is off selected Optus prepaid devices only as per the catalogue wording. Also note that the Oppo F1 doesn't appear part of this promotion - therefore you should not expect the price to be overridden at your store.

The catalogue features Optus ZTE F286 $14.50 (save $14.50). Alcatel onetouch Pixi 3 also spotted for $24.50 (save $24.50). Thanks unity1.

          @johnleckie70:

Octa core 99 dollars - cannot go wrong

prior to use I was using ZTE Smart fit 4g which i bought for 45 dollars.

by far this phone is superior.

          awesome 13mp camera too

        • +2

          @chingy213: and 3gb ram

    • Wait…

You've been a member for 7 years. Why are you linking on imgur ???

  • Assuming this is a part of their Easter sale until tomorrow. I reckon this is nationwide.

    • If it is, its not on there website.

  • +1

Why does it say price override? Specials usually don't say this.

    • It wasn't scanning at 50% off but it was clear it was. Pricing error.

      • +2

I would be keen on this but unfortunately it's not a pricing error. I called 3 stores in WA. The first 2 did not have then phone and said only certain handsets were 50% off. The 3rd store I called was Riverton. They scanned the price and it was full price.

Otherwise this is a store specific special.

        • Oh well…

        • +2

When i went there, it had a sign and it said 50% of optus prepaid devices - when she scanned the phone no discount appeared and then she did a manual over-ride.

        • @chingy213: Hopefully other stores have a similar sign then one can argue it should be 50% off. But it it says on selected Optus handsets then not much hope. You don't have a picture of the sign advertising 50% off do you?

Maybe someone in WA can post a picture as they are the only stores still open.

    • Staff member manual override the price.

  • Damn, been looking for this phone to be on sale ;(

  • +2

Very good specs: Octa core, 3 gb ram, expandable memory, 13 mp camera. Very good price for a decent specs phone

    • -2

      But horrible screen

      • +3

It's still about 300 ppi so I wouldn't call it horrible but that varies from person to person. It's still going to be a step above other equivalently priced phones that pretty much all have WVGA resolution though

  • -1

    Any luck in Eastgardens NSW

    • Is that a question or statement?

      • +1

        Imagine my upward inflexion

  • +1

BigW's "Think Easter Deals" catalogue. which runs until tomorrow, has a Huawei in it. The catalogue also reads:

    Optus ZTE F286

    • Bluetooth, FM Radio, USB connection
    • Long battery life

50% off more Optus phones in store.

So it would seem it is not every Optus phone that is 50% off. Remains to be seen if OP's Oppo is one of them.

    • +5

Well that clears it for me. Catalogue says more phones, not all phones. Oppo is not one of them (see my comment above

Any post which shows a receipt with a price override should be removed until the price is confirmed. Price overrides don't constitute a bargain.

      • +4

They do for the buyer lol

    • +1

It's not and it is only selected handsets and devices, the post should be edited to reflect that, even the recipt shows a price override

    • +2

If you go to the Big W website and click on the two phones in the catalogue, for example the Optus Alcatel onetouch Pixi 3 you can see the following information "50% off selected items. In store only. Ends 28.03.16. Prices as marked."

Click on the Optus Samsung Galaxy J1 and no such message appears.

So it's clear it's only selected handsets. Don't go into Big W and just expect them to discount the phone by 50% when it's not one of the eligible handsets. OP just got lucky he/she score an incompetent staff member.

  • Price match at optus maybe?

    • Optus don't price match Optus devices sold at other retailers

  • Remember, with this phone you cannot unlock the bootloader AT ALL.

    • Not sure this is correct - check the latest posts in the F1 thread on Whirlpool.

      • True, hopefully it'll be released soon

  • No stock at Big W QV Melbourne :(
    Any luck Melbournians

    • +1

Nah Mate, No stock at South Yarra and Box Hill as well :(

      • How did u know??? Those stores are closed before op post

        • Went there for shopping clothes.. Without knowing about the Optus sale but was looking for same phone.. Or LG G3 to gift it to nephew

        • bigw was open today? easter sunday?

  • How would I go about getting this phone unlocked, and how much would it cost?

    • It wouldn't really be any good on the Telstra network anyway.

      • Why not?

        • +1

because the optus version of the F1 has been crippled with bands missing for 3G and 4G

        • @lostboi: ok thanks

  • Sunshine VIC has maybe 4 in stock but it's scanning at full price. The lady scanned 2-3 other Optus phones but all scanned at full price.

  • Confirmed in my local store the Oppo scans at full price. Anyway, got them the price match the Chromecast 2 against HN and paid with discounted DM egift card. $40.80 for Chromecast 2 isn't bad at all.

  • I tried with receipt at BigW southland
and they would not discount it
    as the receipt says override
