20OFFAU16

To all those who'd prefer to save their points for something more worthy or encourage others to "sell" to them. In particular I could get iPods (iPod touch 64GB) or iPhones, Maui Jim sunglasses, or anything else you couldn't always get discounts on easily. YMMV.

From my e-mail:

The weather may be getting colder, but the deals are getting hotter at the Qantas Store. With 20% off almost everything - including already discounted items - you'll enjoy great savings on thousands of products!

From the latest gadgets and technology, to luggage, perfume and outdoor equipment, you're sure to find something you'll love.

Simply enter promo code 20OFFAU16 at checkout*.

But hurry, sale ends on 31 March 2016, so don't miss out!

Does this work on gift vouchers?

I'm thinking either gift voucher or Apple Watch.

Update: Just saw the post above… Guess it won't work on gift vouchers then :(

  • Thanks got the little guy espresso machine.

The price of some of the items is unbelievably bad. Generally better to cash the points out for vouchers (which aren't on the 20% off).

    E.g. PlayStation® 4 1TB Console (PS4) 38,784 + $447.96
Or you can buy the same console with a game and bluray for $479 at BigW without the points

    • +6

Yes, it appears buying non-voucher stuff from the Qantas shop is stupidly expensive.

Doing some rough calculations it appears without a discount, you can trade in 17,570 points for a $100 voucher to Woolworths, Big W or whoever. This works out to be a conversion rate of 175 points per AU$1.

Now, if we take a look at a random item, like the iPad Air 2 WiFi (32gb) Silver:

132,510 points for an item worth AU$598 (from Big W).
This translates to 221 points per dollar (without the discount).

Even if you take into account the 20% off in this promotion you're looking at:

106,008 points for an item worth AU$598 (from Big W).
This translates to 176 points per dollar (including 20% off).

This isn't a bargain. It works out to the equivalent of spending AU$754.18 for the item without discount, or AU$603.34 with the 20% discount for an item that has a RRP of AU$599.

tl;dr: This 'bargain' appears to simply make their prices roughly match the RRP of the products rather than be stupid above the RRP as they normally are.

      • +1

The iPad prices (based on points and RRP) there are still the prices before the latest price drop.

I can't find a cheaper price for an iPod touch 64GB for the kids anywhere else at the moment. After the discount, it's 52,240 points, equivalent to $315 JB eGift card dollars if I used my points to redeem that instead. I'd happily do it!

If you could use your points in a more effective way, good for you. For me, the best way is to redeem them as gift cards. That's what I base it on. This discount code also works on items already on "sale". It's obviously not working out for you, and no doubt not worth it for many more. It is however fantastic for what I wanted, and at least a couple more.

Just goes to show you needed to pick the right items, and generalising it's not worth it just proves it's true - for you.

    Thanks OP
I just set the house up with Sonos gear.
Bought a play 5, play bar and sub. Just like apple, the best deals on Sonos are only 10% off.
The house is going to be Rockin!

    • Same here. Bought 2 x Play 1, one for each bedroom. Best discount I've seen so far was the 15% off voucher for my birthday, when bought the Sonos sub.

      • Nah you'll want them in a pair for Stereo, so buy some more :)

Previously got the Sonos gear from the QFF site on a sale they had before. Pretty happy with them in the bedroom etc.

Today must be the 'business/first class flights are better value' police's annual picnic.

    • +6

      Stop right there!

Generally business class flights yield better value for points.

      • -1

        Quick, hide everyone. They're baaaack!

  • I've got 70k , got a flight coming up soon and thinking if it's worth getting an iPad mini 4 for 72k worth approx 550 if purchased through jb or the like

What do you guys think or is the a better way to do it

    • Generally best to cash them in for Gift vouchers

      • Ended up working out that with the 20% off it saved me $115 buying it through the Qantas store rather than gift vouches
I used 64k of points - equivalent to $385 jb vouchers
        I then put $68 on top = $453
        Jb selling them for $568

  • Thanks OP. Picked up some 2xu compression gear. On sale +20% off makes it more reasonable than usual

  • -1

I'd rather prefer to use points on redemption flight bookings that is a better value of points.

  • +2

I just burned 500k+ points for redemption business class flights around Asia and trust me, it's really worth effort.

Once you fly business, you won't be able to fly coach anymore. No wonder those rich people are fat 'cos they always get fed all the time whether they're at the lounge or on board of the flights. In addition, you'll get access to free boozes all you can drink! Just name your poison and they'll serve it to you.

    • +1

agreed. i bought business class tix and used 90k points to upgrade to first class to LAX. haha, you cannot go back!!

      • +6

Luckily I don't have enough points or cash for business. Ha!

    • +1

Mostly agree. I'm fortunate enough to fly business every now and then. However, the most efficient use of points is upgrading flights to business, rather than buying with points outright.

      • +1

Yep, my mate used points and got first class to Japan and Korea for $1500 Woolworth card equivalent in May

      • +1

Agree, but since I never fly with QF and don't have any tier status, I thought it's best not to gamble with upgrade request and just use my QF points to secure the tickets.

    • So an Ozbargainer would never upgrade then? If you really "can't go back", then you're stuck with a lifetime of paying business-class prices…

      • It's the same reason I never tried the latest free demo snowboards in the ski season. I may not have been happy with my $200 board after doing so!

  • cheers op, just ordered a new waeco deep cycle battery

  • Thanks OP - Placed order for an Apple iPad mini 4 Wi-Fi Cellular - Gold 128GB from the points I got from ANZ FF card :)

  • Thanks OP, ordered the Sonos PLAY:1 for around 38k points with the 20% discount.

    • Question re Sonos: why not get a decent bluetooth speaker with battery for total wireless freedom.. I am considering one myself but wondering if there is something more practical.

Does it just come down to the sonos quality and eco system of interconnecting speakers.

  • +1

    This reduces the price of a Mac Mini 2.6GHz i5/ 2X4GB/ 1TB (MGEN2X/A) from 172.7k to 138.2k
Apple store price is $1100, so cost reduces from 156p/$ to 125 p/$

Compare with vouchers: normal price for $500 Woolworths Voucher is 89k points at a cost of 178 p/$

  • Thanks for posting … just got myself a much needed new coffee machine!

  • Scored a good deal on Maui Jim sunnies. Sunglass Hut has them for $289 and it cost me 25,800 points. Happy with that!

    • That's a really good buy

Their Sunnies are by far superior to most other brands

      • All made by luxottica anyway ;)

        • Owned by the same parent company, but materials differ vastly. I have a similarly expensive and good quality pair of sunnies for driving. It's like seeing the world through a HD lens. Stupidly expensive though

        • Maui Jim's are e not made by luxottica. One of the few brands that aren't. Another reason whilst Maui is held in higher regard

    • Good find… very tempted to pick up a pair I've had my eye on as well.

      • Go for it!

        • and ordered… 25,896 points instead of $289 for sunglasses… sounds like a win for me :)

        • @aeon: did you get the Haleakala?

        • @mitch21: no I got the Red Sands ones…

    • I thought they were already cheap before the discount!

  • Anything good?

  • -2

Membership required? If so, please update post.

  • Website down just as i was about to checkout…

Qantas realised they were bleeding QFF points from OzB hunters and are now in damage control.

    New exclusions/price adjustments await =(

    • Scared me! In all the excitement I forgot to redeem my items as I needed my wife's login details. All good, worked for me just now.

  • Is anyone else experiencing slow delivery estimates?

iPhone 6s 128GB, ordered 28/03/2016. Estimated delivery to Sydney CBD 21/04/2016.

  • Hi Ozbargainers, is it worth getting a PlayStation 4 1TB + 2 games bundle? It will cost me just under 78000 points with the discount. Thanks

    • +1

Look at Jason80's post above, which is a clear no. However 78,800 points to me translates to $475 JB eGift Card dollars, so dunno how he worked that one out.

      • didn't notice that post, thank for your help

  • So any good deals to be had?

Any TV's or audio products? Bose ? Bose PC speakers?

I was thinking about PS4 1TB with 2 games but not sure?

    • For the PS4, check out Jason80's post near the top, and mine just above yours.

You'd need to work out what your points are worth to you, then see if it's still a good deal. I work off 16,600 = $100 JB eGiftcard dollars, so the iPod touch 64GB to me was great value.

  • Thanks. Based on that maths I think it's just worth it….assuming I don't have any flights that I need to book.

Also why is the PS4 500GB more than the 1TB in points redemption??

  • Thanks OP for the find. Bought a leatherman surge and a ipad pro 128gb.

  • I'm still thinking whether to get a PS4 1TB with 2 games:P

  • I have flew business and first class before. IMO I don't think it's is worth the extra $$$ or points.
    I rather take the cash.

  • Agreed, why people would pay hundreds of dollars to sit in a more comfortable seat for a few hours is beyond me.. If it is a big trip and person needs to be highly effective on day of landing then maybe depending on circumstances but not for general travel..

    • I think most people pay for it for long distance travel
The ones who pay for short distance generally are rich enough that it doesn't matter

The discomfort of economy is a big reason, I'm below average size and I'm uncomfortable.

I wouldn't pay for business put using points doesn't feel like paying.
