What's the "gratuities" situation with Carnival in Australia…… is it like P&O where it's included in the fare, or like Royal Caribbean, where $12 a day is automatically added to your on-board account?

    • +1

Just got back from the 11 NEW CALEDONIA & VANUATU on Carnival and the gratuities was included in the total ticket cost.

Although some services on the boat have fine print % gratuities (i think 5% from memory) on top of the cost which if it isn't manually set to 0 on your account before the end of the day gets automatically deducted.

How was the cruise in general?

        • Fantastic, overall a great experience. My partner and myself got married on the cruise so it was special trip and there was nothing that i could fault really. Only issues were the daycare is poorly managed and under staffed, after tea time period there isnt much options for snacks like biscuits or anything if you want that with a cuppa and the off shore excursions are a little on the pricey side. But all this is nit picking really it was a great cruise and i plan to go again in the next 12 months!

Can you comment on the quality of food and service as well as the overall experience please.

        • +1

We had some of the best customer service ever. From the dining experience to cleaning, everyone was polite and prompt!
Food was great we stuck to the dining restaurant most of the time and every meals was great. Only issue is im a vegetarian and its hard eat that sort of diet on the cruise unless you give notice a day in advance for the cooks to make some specific.

      • Thx….were on-board prices in AUD or USD?

        • +2

          I believe they are aud.

        • +1

          @matt_will_fix_it:

Ok thx….. Just found an article that also confirms this…. P@O, carnival and princess all use AUD to price drinks and extras, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity price all drinks and extras in USD once on-board.

I cruised with Royal Carribian back in feb of this year……the price of a 200g block of plain Cadbury chocolate was USD$13 from their onboard shop!

        • +4

@ash2000: it's likely that block of chocolate has been in transit for a long time.
Hence the high cost for ( •_•)>⌐■-■ shipping.

        • All prices were in AUD on the ship.

    The T&Cs state

$72 per person per day (total fare $720 per person) based on the 10 day cruise to New Caledonia and Vanuatu departing 13 Jun 2016 on Carnival Spirit in interior twin accommodation.

    They also state

    Promo code R72

But putting in this code brings the specified 10 night cruise down to $634
ie. $63.40 per person per day. o_O

Are these all from Sydney? Please add departure port info.

    • +1

Yes, all Carnival Cruises depart and return to Sydney.

  • Suites don't seem much cheaper… be good if they were significantly reduced.

  • +8

I really dislike how they quote per person per day. You are unable to buy a cruise for one person for one day. What's next? Advertising per arm per hour? Per fingernail per minute? Per hair per second?

    • +8

It's like unit pricing in supermarkets - it helps compare on the cost of the cruise.

Instead of $1499 for an 8 day cruise and $2299 for a 14 day cruise, advertising in cost/day shows you easily whether the price is good value or not.

Of course, itinerary, date and other factors are also considerations, but that helps with the price comparisons.

    • Then what's a better way to quote? It's like booking a hotel room based on per night. And there are other cruises where you can buy for one day e.g. Captain Cook cruises.

      • +4

Per cabin per night (twin rate). A single person can't book this for $72 per night.

In this example, the real minimum is $72 x 2 per night

So, "cruise from $144 per cabin per night (twin share inc gratuities)" seems the logical unit pricing to me?

Solo travel rates are normally the same (ie. you need to pay for 2 people minimum), but if they want to do a solo special, then they could advertise that. Same for Quad share specials.

    • +1

True ozbargainers would book a 2 bed room and pack 8 people in it. And make your own booze in the bath.

    • +5

All twin share ads suck. And they're disrespectful to the forever alone.

  • +1

Good find OP. Thanks for posting

I have found these cruises on Cruise Guru as well. They all look slightly cheaper booking with them. Every extra $$ for holidays helps

  • Carnival - yes they're cheep granted, but they're nasty as well. Hopeless buffet, low quality food - cheep

    • +2

I went on the carnival legend last year and it was great. Buffet wasnt bad however we mostly ate dinner in the restaurants

      • Did you have to pay for it (I assume you did) ?
        Was it expensive ?

        • +2

All cruise lines include meals in your fares. There will at least be two "free" options, the buffet and the main dinning room (which is full service, white linen, and at least 3 courses).

There are other dinning experiences that are paid, but most people will eat the majority , if not all of their meals in one of the two included restaurants.

Don't forget the AMEX $100 statement credit when you spend $500 at Ecruising off memory?
But there will be some charge for a credit card, check that first.

  • Any tips for those unlunky ones who have already booked one of the cruises?. Cancel and forgo deposit and cancellation fee (which is well below the $1000+ savings for rebooking)?.

    • Thats pretty well all you can do unfortunately.

    • Check your T+Cs, it depends who you booked through. Some agencies (eg Ozcruising) may let you move to a promotional fare and charge you a rebooking fee (approx $100).

      • +1

Yeah there's always pros and cons. We are currently booked on a balcony room and will loose that.

However, after doing some calculations even if we cancel and rebook, there is still a $792 saving.

    • Don't forget all the good rooms near the middle / rear of the ship might be booked. So you may get a cheaper deal, but be near the top / front..
You may all be in the same boat…but not in the same boat ;)

  • Love the price.

Wonder about the weather though. We did the South Pacific last November and there's a fair bit of time at sea. Once you leave the islands it was occasionally quite cold on deck especially in the wind.

    Anyone else know?

    • +2

Quite cool to cold. Even swimming in mid winter on the south pacific islands will be a bit nippy. That's why many cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Princess) leave Australia from April to November.

That said, Carnival Spirit does have a retractable pool roof.

      • Thanks for the input. We had an interior room and so spent no time at all in it, and during the day the kids just wanted to be playing on deck and in the pool. For us, seems like it just might not work as well if it was cold.

  • +3

Yeh booked a 9 night on there last sale for $494 with the $100 off.. $54 a night. then managed to score the aria before the carnival on another 9 nighter for $585 $65 a night… with a 2 day in sydney between them both..

Sure gonna be better than 1 week we were planning on the goldcoast for around the same coin

    Better than this deal…

    • Great price. What cruise did you book? Ecruising ?
