    • Did it at least get lollipop?

      • Yes, it did

    • can you comment on the size difference between the z7 and the Nexus 7 2013 (v2)? the nexus 7 with case can fit in my suit pants pocket, jeans back pocket, etc - does the z7 (with extra width, but thinner profile) do the same?

  • Can anyone recommend a good cover and a keyboard?

  • Is this offer available at the Sony retail stores as well?

    • Would assume so, might be hard to find stock though at this price (we are already @ 4k clicks).

  • Specs specifically says it has DLNA and miracast, does that mean other tabs like galaxy S2 does not have these features?

I want a tab that I can use to watch contents on my Sony tv (800B) from different apps like Presto…

    • DLNA is just another app. So any tablet can use DLNA by loading an app. The most polished and popular Android app is Bubbleupnp.

  • Great price, picked one up for my parents.
Fyi, I have the mobile z3, DO NOT trust the water proof feature. Eventually it fails, the o rings on mine have started to fall off.

    • +1

Claim warranty? Might get free replacement?

      • I could, however the mobile still works just fine… And I can't be bothered to be without a mobile for weeks while they sort it out. I got the magnetic charger to stop the o ring from getting worse.

  • If only 9.7" I might buy, now using 5.5" mobile and feel 8" not much different

    • +3

G4? An extra 2.5 is a huge difference.

  • Anyone got coupon that about to expire? ;)

  • So is this getting Android 6.0 ?

  • Anyone else getting "Order detail is empty." when trying to view their order confirmation online?

    • +1

I got the same thing, I was told this sometimes happens and that the order will work after 24 hours.
I ordered yesterday and was blank, this morning it has all the details.
      Hope that helps.
      :)

      • +1

Yeah I just checked and order now shows up :), hopefully it will be shipped this week!

  • Does the magnetic charging port support QC2.0? Also is the bootloader locked (no custom roms)?

  • This case looks ok?

I may just put on a tpu cover and treat it like a phone.

  • Anyone have a code they don't want? I can't seem to register without a product code, and all my products are at home, by which time I'm assuming this will be gone.

  • Does this play games well (owners)? Looking for a replacement for my Nexus 6P.

  • +1

Might be better off with the 8" Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 depending on your needs. Already has Marshmallow and has a selection of PC game ports available if you get the controller (HL2, Portal, etc). AUD$262 + reasonable shipping from B&H here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1203131-REG/nvidia_940…

Xperia has PS4 remote play though and probably a better camera(?)

    • Thanks, plenty of good reviews for this one.

    • Not sure if Sony's 3GB of RAM would make a difference (vs Nvidia's 2GB)

  • Me just Dont get why people keep buying 7 to 10 inch tablet which have a pretty much the same performance as phione, when they already had way more powerful processing processor & more customizable compact Laptop like thinkpad or Lapblet like Surface Pro for about 13 inch.

MyvPreviously bought tablet still at their dusty box doing nothing.

    • +2

I used to think like that too, It depends on circumstances really. Personally I needed a tablet/laptop for university (mainly to read pdfs in tutes / bring up documents), while I would of preferred a laptop I have a solid skylake desktop at home so I couldn't justify buying a $1k+ laptop over a $300 tablet (which If i end up needing a laptop I can sell the tablet for almost break even). I forgot my 10.5 inch tablet once, wasn't a fun tute reading a PDF document off my phone.. Tablet is also way easier to lug around for my 90 minute commute.

    • +2

it's not about performance. it's simply a tradeoff between bigger and more comfortable to use screen vs portability. people have different preferences on that tradeoff, and can even have different preferences at different times.

      I have:
-5.7" phone: least comfortable to browse on, but goes with me everywhere.
-7" tablet: more comfortable to browse on, easy to carry and still fits in my pocket. I take it with me most places, whenever I could potentially be browsing/gaming, and want to do so more comfortably.
-7.9" (gf's ipad mini): even more comfortable to browse on. doesn't fit into my pocket like the 7", but fits in my small satchel and is still small enough to carry in the hand relatively comfortably. I take this to work in my satchel instead of my 7" when gf is not using it.
-10" 2-in-1: the most comfortable to browse on (about as big as i would go before it starts getting uncomfortable to hold) and the obvious benefit of being able to be used as a laptop, but nowhere near as portable as the others. I use this at home and when travelling, but otherwise would never take it with me.

sure, i could do all that (well, most) with my 5.7" phone. and if i have to choose only one device, obviously that's the one i would choose. but i would rather have the option to use whatever device fits my purposes better at any given time.

and sure, maybe i could have got a surface pro. but a surface pro would cost the same or more than all those tablets combined, and i would use it much less, due to the inconvenience and far lesser portability.

(plus, they are all on different OSes, so I get the extra benefit of having access to each ecosystem: Windows Phone, Android, iOS and Windows 10).

      each to their own! :)

    • +3

There is a huge difference between a 5" phone and an 8" tablet, and since owning a tablet I rarely use my laptop. The tablet is much more convenient than a laptop when couch sitting, flying, whatever. Certainly I can see the advantages of convertible laptops (detachable or rotatable screens), but typically these are a lot more expensive than a tablet (particularly if you are looking at Surface Pros).

A tablet is not a replacement for a laptop/desktop. There are still web sites which just dont work well on a tablet, and you certainly cant use android/apple tablets for some things (development, etc). However for day to day use, web browsing, reading emails, youtubing, its the tablet I go to first.

  • Expire or Out of Stock? Went to site but no buy button… :(

    • +1

I'd say its OOS, with 5k+ click and 141 upvotes.
Edit - Yup It's out of stock.

  • Mine has just been "Dispatched". Have tracking information - through DHL.
edit: Carrier is with Australian Air Express. ETA 14/04

  • Got an email saying, among other things, "Unfortunately, we are unable to validate the payment details you have supplied at this time

We require Bank Authorisation ID number (or Preauth Code for some bank), which is a set of 6 digits code of transaction reference number for your order, to process payment and proceed with your order."

    Sounds legit?

    • Perhaps give Sony a call

    • Same :S

    • Received the same email. I called my bank who said this was an unusual request but gave me what they thought was the code required. I almost didn't bother and was going to buy a Nvidia k1 tablet instead :).

  • Doesn't even come up with the 299.40 price anymore right? all i see is 499

  • +1

Is anyone else being asked for a "Bank Authorization id number"? I just got this weird email asking for it.

    • I have bought a few things from Sony (not this tablet though) and have never received an email like that.

    • +3

I got same email. Seems like attempt to get rid of orders in a nice way for overselling.

      • Likewise.. Seems like it. Frustrating especially since I ordered shortly after the post came up.

        • I called them up to confirm its them. The rep said they generally they ask for the number if the delivery and charged address are different, but mine are both the same….
Checked my order status after sending them the number, so it's definitely going to be sent at some point. Hopefully soon.

  • Got mine delivered today - that's impressive. Well done Sony!

    • Thoughts/feedback..

Heaps and heaps of updates to be done
The first one is 600+ MB
Then around 4 or more updates many reboots
I am hoping it will go to marshmallow

Updates tend to be slow since android optimises 162 apps each reboot (288 the first reboot)
It should check to see future updates before doing this as its a waste of time to be done repetitively
On Apple you can go from the lowest to the highest firmware in one hit

That said its really light and feels great in the hand
I hate android with a passion and got a sony dual shock adapter so I can play emulators on this
So for my use its perfect and virtually second to none

        Updating takes 40-60 mins
No marshmallow yet but it is out for this device in some regions

After playing ghost and goblins on mame and some PSP games with the ps4 controller and adapter this is the best portable emulation experience. I have played emulators on desktop, PSP, vita, nvidia shield, iPad, iPhone but this combo is the best by far. Worth paying even $500 and this is from an android despiser 👍

      • Haven't had a chance to play with it yet or connect it to wi-fi for updates as I'm at work, but agree with thelastnoob about the great form factor feel in the hand. I'm amazed at how light it is even compared to my Samsung Note 8.0. I got the Sony for the FHD screen mostly.

I also got a magnetic charger dock on eBay for $4 from China, which makes a lot of sense to me since the micro-USB port is covered by a flap.

        • +1

A dock for $4??? Or was it just something like this?

          Bargain!

What case are you planning to use?

        • @boxall: Thanks. Checked sonys website and they have crap all in the way of decent priced covers (unless you like pink and use the $30 voucher which would work out to $5). Would have been good if they made a flip keyboard that could use the power socket for connection via magnets - similar to surface etc.

        • @boxall:

Yep, that's the one but from a different seller. Well done on getting it for like 80 cents cheaper than I did :)

Not sure if I need the case as I will mostly be using it at home. Generally, I find that cases diminish the advantage of the thin form factor and I usually use phones naked too. I already have a generic phone / tablet metallic stand from eBay (around $5.50 a few months ago), which will work for watching videos.

        • +1

@pw2002au: Yes, that would be a great idea but it wouldn't be cheap though and may not make sense for $100+, especially considering how much we paid for the tablet.

        • @elektron:
Yeah I like bare naked with one exception and that's a tempered glass screen
As it provides great protection and unlike plastic covers it doesn't end up all scratchy which causes rainbow effects on screen also it feels so much nicer to touch

        • @thelastnoob:

Which one are you referring to?

        • @boxall:

Thanks, buts eems a bit pricey for $16.50.

        • +1

          @boxall:

I ended up getting this one - ultra slim PU leather (with plastic back) smart cover with the optional tempered glass protector for $20. I got the black one - interestingly, all the other colours are $28 with the glass included. Without the tempered glass they are all $15, so probably not a bad deal since the black one would work well with this deal.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ULTRA-THIN-SMART-PU-LEATHER-CASE-…

EDIT: It currently says "last one" when you select the black one with the glass but it said the same thing before I bought mine.

        • @elektron:
I haven't ordered glass for this I'm referring to my iPhone and my son used glass on note 4

        • @elektron:

Didnt want to wait 3 weeks for it.

        • @boxall: Fair enough then

        • Yep. I purchased the Sony cover. Its expensive, but its all quality.

Prior to this I bought this one which was pretty good:
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PU-Leather-Folio-Smart-Case-Cover…

        • @mikecamimo: Black or white. From where, if black?

        • @boxall:

It arrived. Absolute garbage. Connects properly for about 1s max! <—- talking about the ebay dock.

        • @boxall:

          <DELETED>

        • @boxall:

Crap! I won't be able to pick mine up for another week but it really sucks as I've been really looking forward to it.

  • Mine arrived with only one email from Sony. VERY quick delivery. WIll play tonight.

  • Grabbed this interim sleeve until the real stuff arrives.

Called the Sony Kiosk in Westfields Parramatta, Sydney at 3:30 today, they said they had 10 units left at this price. My wife just picked one up for me and the guy confirmed to me over the phone it was the Z3 Tablet Compact 16gb wifi model for $299.

Edit: Just checked again now, still 9 or 10 left at 5:30pm.

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up. I grabbed the last one Sunday. I asked about the demo unit as well and the best they would do is $279 - Couldn't really expect a better price, but passed on it. So, they should still have the demo unit if anyone is keen.

  • Really confused by storage. Supposedly I have all these apps using SD card (64GB) space (I moved them there), but when looking at the card itself it says it has only consumed 500MB!

For example MC4. 1.9 GB used of card….but not according to the storage app or any other app that tells me how much space is in use.

    WTF????

    • Looks like it is just the storage app not reporting the correct sizes.

      • Have you tried restarting the tablet after moving the data to the card? Sounds like the usage stats have not been refreshed. You shouldn't have to do that though.

        • Yep. I think there is just confusion as the to total size of the SD card compared to the usage.

        • @boxall:
remember android internal memory is called sdcard0 and your sdcard that you inserted is sdcard1

        • @thelastnoob:

Yep all good. I used the inbuilt tools to move the apps, so no issues.

        • +1

          @boxall:

And it gets even more confusing. Installed a new 1GB game and it says it is using 867MB on the SD card and 33 MB on the device. Move to SD card makes no difference.

Uninstall and I get 1GB back on the device.

        • @boxall:

I give up with SD as storage for apps. It just not work.

  • +3

Boy I love this tablet. Using it so much more then my ipad Air 2. Size is just perfect!

  • And today MM arrived. :-)

    • Yep, that really made this deal even sweeter :-) Really didn't expect another upgrade - thank you, Sony!
