Picked this up when it was 399 on Telstra's eBay store.
Would recommend it for the price.

  • that's tempting :p

  • +5

    wifi only, no cellular?

    • +6

why negative votes. i would have loved if it was cellular just like the review link.

    • +3

      yes why not cellular?

  • +5

Oh why not over $300 so I could get TRS.

  • does anyone know if the tablet has the same dac as the z3 phone?

    • +1

I believe so. Hi-Res audio support and all those goodies are included.

  • Better than this? http://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-tab-2-10-tablet.html - Guess with $200 discount it should be :>

    • +2

Assuming its the A10-70 variant (which appears better than the published specs on the HN site), summary below
      * 10" (depends on preference)
      * 1920x1080 (same)
      * 2GB ram (worse)
      * MTK 8165M CPU (worse - going off Antutu, 30k vs 50k)
      * not water and dust resistant

      well worth the additional $32

      • -6
        • MTK 8165M CPU (worse - going off Antutu, 30k vs 50k)

Doesn't this also mean many ARM compatible apps will not work as well?

        • +2

They're both ARM CPUs, so what are you talking about?

  • At last - I am getting rid of my 2012 Nexus! Thanks TA!

    • +2

Nexus 7 2016 rumoured to be announced in May. tempted by the Z3, but will wait to see what gets announced in May.

      • Same. Hopefully the new Nexus 7 will come out soon. Want to upgrade my old one :-)

      • Really? Where is the rumor source? Been waiting ages for an update

  • +4

Even at $269 with the Hush Hush coupon :P, its a 18 Months + old model and the SOC SnapDragon 801 is very weak !

    • +5

Ok I'll bite, what is the coupon that you speak of ;)

    • +3

Snapdragon 801 is still quite nice though! And size, having microsd etc… kind of a good tablet for the cash I'd say!

Anyone got the ecoupon sitting around and don't plan to use it? Mine expired 2 days ago it seems :(

      • Voucher would be nice but still happy at $300. Picked one up, thanks OP

    • whats the hush hush coupon?

      • It's not really a universal coupon, It's stealing a code off someone who purchased a Sony product. Sign up to get a free $25 coupon if they still have that offer going (or if you signed up, use that one).

    • +2

The SD801 is still a brilliant SOC, especially combined with Sony's version of Android. I've got a Z2 on 5.1.1 and, side by side with the HTC One M9 (cold, so no throttling at play), it gives better performance all round (multitasking, opening apps etc). In benchmarks it will fall behind but in real use it's great-especially combined with Sony's software and fast internal flash memory.

Aside from that, battery life is great, and the screen brightness is miles ahead of anything on the market (if that even matters :P).

  • +22

    Must resist…. One… does NOT need… 16 tablets……

    • ROFL :)

    • Two may need it though…. :D 8 a piece!

    • +1

      Unless it's Panadol?

    • +2

      why not?
now i dont have to carry the damn massive thing from room to room - one for each :)

      • +1

        You have 16 rooms?

  • Not bad, If i didn't grab a Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 for $300 a few months ago, I would of probably grabbed this for under <$300.
No Cellular kind of sucks though :/

  • Good thing is Sony has started pushing out Marshmallow to this pocket rocket.
A great product for the price.
Don't worry about 16gb storage as you can always format a class 10 micro SD card to exfat and mount it as an external storage and move most of your apps to SD card with Link2SD.

    • Can you use the new "adopt SD as internal" thing that is in Marshmallow or are Sony being silly and hiding that feature like most other OEMs?

    • +1

I dont think so they have started pushing to Z3 Compact Tablet, they have started pushing to Z3 and Z3 Compact Mobile.Probably might take another quarter to hit AU models via OTA. You have any links ?

  • +1

    best case for this tablet?

    • found a genuine sony case from handtec for cheap, only 4 left!

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400873085736?_trksid=p2060353.m14…

      • -1

Black would be nicer.. White seems okay

        • can't find black anywhere, unless you're willing to pay $100+ from japan

        • +1

@nhutty: Not a bad deal for an original case, but can't bring myself to pay around $30 (after the currency conversion) for a white one.

  • +4
    • Awesome, but that much $ is making my brain short circuit.

      • It's the best solution bar some 3rd party clone if one exists
Anyway imagine the value when you load your legal roms onto device

  • Has anyone successfully got a USB storage device to work with this tablet?

    • +1

I do not know about Z3, but I have USB OTG working on the Xperia Z tablet (which is much older) with the stock rom. So I cannot see why Z3 will not support USB Storage.

      • Thanks!

      • +1

sorry, not sure about tablet but the Z3 phone had an OTG adaptor in the box.

  • Remote Play is a big plus.

    • Its been hacked to use on non Sony devices as well !

      • Hacked version support connection via router in same SSID only. It still has some lag.

Maybe the native Sony one support point to point (PS4 to tablet) and can be faster?

        • I don't think remote play allows direct connection between ps4 and tablet. However, if you have a decent gaming PC and don't mind using a dualshock 3 or 4, moonlight works well. I have been using it for everything except first person shooters. My router is only average and delays between PC screen and tablet screen are usually about 25-30ms. I imagine with an AC router it would be noticeably faster.

        • @lyle88:
remote play works fine on my laptop with official software, not sure what moonlight is.
          I was playing DriveClub perfectly.

  • -5

    Got to be kidding,
16 GB tablet with no phone network support?

Better off getting a Samsung Tab S
At least it has a OLED screen.

    • +4

It does have a microSD slot.

    • I got this for $269 (excluding cashrewards) - isn't the Tab S like twice the price?

Besides, I think the 16:9 (or 16:10) ratio is much better for video consumption than Samsung's or Apple's 4:3.

  • Oooookkkk… put an order in but when I click the receipt "Click here to view your order details" I get "Order detail is empty"
Anyone else getting that or am I the only lucky one?

    • +1

Had the same happen to me with an earlier Sony order, it took 24 hrs for it to show up in my order history. Was a bit worried as my other orders had registered instantly but this one hadn't. As long as you have the confirmation email with the order number you should be fine.

      • Awesome, thanks for that!

  • -2

    https://buymobile.com.au/products/sony-xperia-z3-tablet-comp…

I might pay $350 for the above link, otherwise it's pretty much useless without 4G LTE.

    • +2

Might be useless to you but 4G is surplus to my requirements.. WiFi is more then enough.

      • I have too many WIFI tablets thats why.

        • +1

          Fair enough..

        • -4

          Good for you.

  • +1

    Thanks, TA, got one.

  • Got it to replace the Samsung Note 8.0 I got for $200 a couple of years ago from a Bing Lee deal. Not that it needed a replacement, especially since it gets limited use as it is, but the Sony was too tempting at this price :)

  • +2

tempted, but will leave it for someone who will actually make good use of it.

  • +2

In case anyone else was looking, heres the DS4 addon in the picture. Seriously considering getting one to play PS4 in bed.

    • +1

$9 for the DS4 Add-On, $269 for the Tablet, yay and play PS4 from Bed :D

      • +5

where can you buy it for $9?

        • Probably referring to the $30 unethical voucher as it's $39 on Sony website

  • -2

can you make cellular calls with this tablet?

    • not without 3G or LTE you can't (this is wifi only)

      • that's a deal breaker for me. thanks for info anyways mate

        • Tethering is the answer if it doesn't have 3G/LTE.

        • @wchau: thats' true but lot easier if you can put a sim card and use it on the tablet esp when traveling. who knows you phone might just die on the way! or dont need to carry another device to enable thethering

    • -1

Just get a skype account :)

      • Or a VoIP account?

  • Tempted even though i have an iPad Air 2….anyone else have a couple of tablets?

    • I have a samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 and I'm considering taking this into uni.. don't really want 2 tablets without cellular though :(

      • Mobile phone hotspot and university's generally have wifi hotspots all over the campus (depending on your campus)

        • Yeah, that is what I'm currently doing. I wanted a second tablet for camping / road trips etc (I have a data sharing sim with optus), If my current tablet was cellular I'd probably grab this.

    • I have two laglets - Acer A500 and Nexus 7; along with working iPad. When even I try to open these tablets, I loose more faith in Android(Linux).
Quite tempted to give Sony a try but with Nexus 7 experience, i will give it a miss.

  • -1

Looked like a perfect travel tablet at first….waterproof, dustproof, lightweight and good battery…. but no cellular or GPS…BUGGA.

  • +1

I am so tempted. Ive got an IPad Air and IPhone 6 Plus. Im just trying to justify purchasing this.

    • +1

I bit the bullet. Not sure why. But as it is for work i can claim it on tax and as under $300 no need to depreciate.

Will be a minor loss if i have to sell.

ipad air 2 the recent lg g4 purchase and now an 8 inch tablet.

  • Anyone still have a coupon they don't want? I'm keen for it :)

  • Can anyone with this tablet comment on how fast its able to load up huge documents? I was planning to use a tablet for Uni to carry my e-books and read word documents, I'm hoping its fast enough as uni books are like ~200 pages

    • +1

I can't speak for the Sony in particular, but since an oldschool Galaxy Tab 10.1 from 2011 has no problem with a 1,200 page 450MB textbook PDF, I would assume this one would handle it fine too.

  • Cheers ordered one, couldn't login from my ID, couldn't retrieve password either.. One of the worst user friendly website… 😈SONY GIDDY UP.

  • +2

Damn this deal, all I had to do was sit down and wait 10 minutes for someone without buying anything. I failed….again.
Can't wait for the PS4 Remote Play!

  • +1

This is a fantastic tablet. I purchased it after previously owning a Nexus 7 and Nexus 7 v2. I've owned it for about a year and highly recommend it, provided you are ok with not getting the regular android updates that is.
Very tempted to get a second one at this price for my wife who inherited my Nexus 7.

    • I am tempted to upgrade from nexus 7 2013. How much better is this? I won't be using it for games or anything intensive.

      • IMO a lot better:
        - faster
        - better battery life
        - expandable storage (microsd)
        - better sound
        - very light, very thin
        - supports ac wifi
        - can be charged using a dock (no need to insert microusb cable)
        - supports remote play
