Telstra $40 BYO Plan (7GB Data, 12 Month Contract, for Students) via UNiDAYS

150

So, there have been ample opportunities over the past few months to jump on one of these big data Telstra plans.
i.e. via eBay, and strange MX plans.
This is a pretty straightforward 12 month contract plan. Only catch is that it is for students only via UniDAYS. Unlike previous Optus deals where the UniDAYS student verification was done by a code (single use, generated after student verification); I don't actually know how the student verification process is completed. Will update the deal once someone signs up I guess. Further details on this plan can be found here but the only info I can find states "Your student discount will be applied in step 2 of the checkout process."
No mention of expiry for now…

Besides the criteria of needing to be a student, this seems like a fairly straightforward way to get a good plan.

In addition to the 7gb of data, this 12 month contract would include:
$1000 talk
Unlimited SMS/MMS
Free wi-fi hotspots across Australia until 30 June 2016 via Telstra Air
Minimum cost: 12 months @$480
Note: I believe talk and text inclusions are for use in Australia only, and international calls/texts incur extra charges.

Other Telstra perks include…
12 Months Free Subscription to Apple Music via ozb
2016 Footy Pass (AFL/NRL) via ozb
200gb OneDrive storage via ozb
and various Telstra Thanks deals (notably cheap movies to Event/Village Cinemas, and cheap footy tickets, etc.)

You also get increasingly more frequent free data days… not sure if that's a perk or a criticism on the recent performance and consistency of the Telstra network…

No no Failstra, that is not good for students!

  • I remember as a student there was no way I could afford a $480 mobile phone habit. Then again my parents werent fools who bought me the latest iphone.

Eh? You couldn't scrounge up $40/month? Until MVNOs took off the cheapest plan you could generally get was $30/month.

        I could, I didnt. There's a difference.

I prefer the flexibility of the Freedom Plus prepaid, contract free plans.
    $40 gets Unlimited calls/sms/mms; $350 international, 3GB data + additional 3GB night time data (+rollover data & international credit) & $40 for itunes/play store
    $50 gets Unlimited calls/sms/mms; $550 international, 4GB data + additional 4GB night time data (+rollover data & international credit) & $50 for itunes/play store

    • One downside is that there are 13 months a year on freedom plus rather than 12.

If you set up Scheduled Monthly Recharge they give you the full month & recharge on the same date every month.

        • +1

Oh yeah, i didnt know this.
So it just makes the recharge the length of the following month or what?

        • How does one set this scheduled monthly recharge up?

        • @MaKa: I managed to find this out myself.

          Telstra Support

If you set up auto recharge you only require 12 recharges per year as opposed to the 28 day credit expiry where you would recharge your account 13 times a year.

Does the main balance credit work towards iTunes credit? I heard it worked on Google play but never heard it works on iTunes as you have to have it hooked it up to your iTunes email?

      • I'm probably wrong on that, i live in an Android world… thought the same deal was available to iFolk?

        • You first need to have a credit card attached to the account and have used it to recharge at least once. Then the only way I could get it to work was to dial #100# from the phone and follow the text prompts. This page suggests you can do it other ways (see Automatic Recharge section towards bottom of page), i.e. from my Account, the 24/7 app or by calling 125 888) but I couldn't get any of those ways to work.

  • Owh….I recently went onto their $40 plan that gave 5gb/month on 12month contract 2 months ago… I'm a student but I guess they wouldn't let me change it to this plan would they :C

I was on Optus Plan recently. During chat with a Telstra rep, I was offered 200$ credit for porting to Telstra on a 12 month plan. Not sure if it applies to everyone and whether someone can use both these offers concurrently. It would be interesting to see if someone could persuade Telstra to do just that…

    • Yes i got 300 credit when port over to Telstra and also got 2gb bonus for 12 months contract. So i am only paying 50 dollars per month for only 6 months with 7gb data.

      • Interesting! That would mean that it would cost $33.33/month without UniDays offer and $23.33/month with UniDays offer. Subtract the 12$/month for Apple music and this is a sweet deal……

      • @arctan I was in the same boat as you, $50/month 7Gb plan locked in for 12 months contract. Then I noticed that the plans offered were $40/month when i was month or two into my plan, so i spoke to telstra via webchat to see if they can match the current offers. The best that they could do was give me a $5/month loyal customer credit on my account so essentially paying $45/month now. Hope this info is some use to you :)

  • This is for new customers only. Check out the bottom of the add

Min cost $480 over 12 months. For new and port in services only. Offer only available to students with a verified UNiDAYS® account. Data for us in Australia.
