  • Done….Thank you!

    • I don't frequently fly. Last time I rode on a plane was back in 1988.

Would the frequent flier be of benefit to me even if I don't fly often?

      • Post your question properly (i.e. not as a reply to the first, completely unrelated comment).

Actually, this is free. You could just apply anyway.. It doesn't cost anything.

edit: just realised you're really new. I'll be nice but don't make a habit of doing that.

As I said above, it's free, so you don't lose out. I'd say for many ozbargainers they would probably accrue the majority of their points from credit card bonuses and expenditure. So yes, you definitely don't need to fly for this to be worthwhile.

        • +1

Neggers - may I ask why the negs? User improperly piggybacked off first comment to squeeze a question in. Can you imagine if everyone on here did the same just to get a question answered?

      • +1

Yes, there are many ways to earn points without flying. And many ways to spend the points without flying. It's free to join…so nothing to lose.

      • +1

        How do you get around?

      • yeah, signup, and wait for spam.
Lately, what's good with Qantas anyways?

  • +1

I am an Ozbargainer "who do not already have free QFF membership". Joined. Thank you.

  • Still a great post despite many already having QFF. Thanks for sharing!

  • +3

If you have a Woolworths rewards card, then I would recommend linking it to your QFF membership.

    • I think they've parted ways?

      • I think you're correct.

      • You can choose Qantas points or Woolworths dollars. From memory it's 870 Qantas points or $10 Woolworths credit

      • I thought they ended their relationship in December. That said, last week in my email the Woolworths offer included the ability to get Qantas FF points if you spent X amount, so I'm not sure if they're working together again to some capacity?

  • My wife hasn't signed up yet. Thanks

    • +1

      Well now she can!

  • Thanks… Signed up

  • -3

Any benefits for signing up for a new one when you're already a member? lol

  • +1

Sorry. Can't understand- why save $89.50? Is there joining fee before?

    • +2

Become a Qantas Frequent Flyer member and receive your Frequent Flyer membership number instantly. Complete the online application form and start earning Qantas Points.

To join, Australia and New Zealand residents need to pay a joining fee of:

Australian residents - AU$89.50 (including GST)

    • Yes, I paid $60 to join back in the mid 90s, before I knew about ozbargain. Unfortunately, there wasn't an equivalent (at least that i knew of) back in the days of fidonet.
Only 50% inflation in 20+ years.

  • +12

Not sure why they even charge the membership to begin with, you'd have to be a sucker to pay.

    • +8

The scheme just gets worse and worse too…

"Good news! We're changing our system to be 'simpler' and it means your points are now worth a lot less!"
"Congratulations! You're points will now expire in half the time, and we won't tell you when we are taking them!"
"Don't worry, if you don't fly every year then you'll lose them all but you can keep your account active, just shop at Woolworths… haha nope, we're taking that away too!"

I used to fly long distance with Qantas every month for years and lost 250,000 worth of points to these idiots because they messed up where the points are allocated to and I was too busy working in remote countries to watch my stupid Qantas account of all things… my mistake I guess, but no understanding at all from Qantas, a big F-you! to 20 years of loyal flying…

So I took all my business to a competitor, and my whole team too. They only get my business if it's an outrageous special now. "Loyalty program" my shiny metal butt!

      • +6

why have you got a shiny metal butt?

      • +6

yeah it's funny how aussie companies think they can treat their customers with contempt, then whinge when international competitors come in & people switch.

I still get monthly emails from Delta telling me I have 20,000 flyer miles which I earnt flying KLM 20+yrs ago.

  • Thanks, also joined.
    There's no annual fee yeah?

    • +1

      No annual fee.

  • +1

Sorry to know that there is joining fee now as I joined a few years ago, there was no joining fee. I can't understand why they set a joining fee.

    • The first time they scrapped the joining fee was when they joined with woolworths card. Up until then it was 89. Since then you can always get free with woollies, but occasionally free straight out. I might be wrong,

      • For years before the Woolies partnership it was actually free for people living overseas… what a rip off right??

    • Makes people feel it has value, much like overinflated RRP prices when it is never sold at that price.

  • Does anyone know if the membership must be individual. I mean, I already have the membership. Should my wife sign up as well or we can share my membership when earning points? Asking because SignaporeAIr etc. don't allow to share it.

    • +2

No. FYI to my knowledge none of the FF do. The number is toured to the name. BUT…Qantas does allow you to transfer points to another account if they are family. Get your wife her own FF number then transfer the points across when you need them. If you have kids get them signed up too.

Summary of transfer rules can be found here:
      http://www.ausbt.com.au/how-to-transfer-qantas-frequent-flye…

      • I will. Thanks.

        • Happy to help.

      • +1

Virgin (Velocity) allows family pooling so points and status credits earned by my kids go to my account.

        • To clarify though for others, to get family pooling the family members must still have their own memberships. They can't put your number down when they accrue points.

  • This would of came in handy for the Japan tickets deal. Can we still redeem the points?

    • +7

You'll of to ask Qantas. Not sure whether they can apply it retrospectively.

    • +2

I was under the impression you could add your card to the booking up to the flight date and then for a period after to claim the points.

I went to Europle last year and the travel agent hadn't added my virgin velocity card number to the booking. Did it after I got back.

    • As Smigit said, you can add your frequent flyer number up until you fly - just go Manage your bookings on the QANTAS website (you need your booking reference number and the Surname of whoever booked the flight).

You can also retrospectively claim for flights up to 30 days ago.

      • Thank you! Will contact the chat

  • So I don't have Membership but can someone tell me what the points are used for? I assume you go to woolies, purchase stuff, get points and use them on flights but what's the points to flights exchange rate?

    • +1

Free flights. You could use them for retail purchases but… The rate of return is not that great. The main advantage is linking the number to eligible credit cards so you get points for everyday purchases that could get you free our reduced fares.

    • +1
      • Thanks Gilby. Beat me to it.

  • +1

I've just tried submitting the form three times already and every time it's giving me a "There was an error processing your request." Is anyone else getting this as well?

  • +2

$89.5 membership fee is ridiculous, who would pay to join with the fee.

    It should be free forever.

    • +3

      Please email your query to:
      [email protected]

A customer service representative may or may not get back to you in 2 business days.

    • $89.5 membership fee is ridiculous, who would pay to join with the fee.

especially when most, if not all of their competitor's loyalty program have no joining fee, what makes Qantas think they are so friggin special?

  • +3

    thanks!

Signed up my 5 week old daughter :)

  • +3

Qantas need to drop this 'pay to join a loyalty program' thing. It's outdated, and has clearly been free through a number of avenues for a while.

  • Perfect for my friend!

  • +1

im not sure if i've known anybody who has paid for this…..i feel bad for those who have lol

  • Signed up thanks. What's the best/simplest/easiest way to earn FF points please?

    • +1

How about 200 points for downloading an app?

      • Damn! No iPhone or Fitbit. Was looking forward to getting on the tarmac.

    • There are lots of credit card deals that pop up on OzB. giving you a large lump of QFF miles for signing up.
Plus credit cards that give you miles for spend. See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/credit_card_guide .
And search OzB. under 'Deals' 'Financial'

  • Next step is to convince my employer to fly us with Qantas instead of budget airlines.

    • Lately, Virgin is doing much better than employee-strike-striken Qantas.

  • +1

WOW - I posted this exact same thing at the end of Feb and got negative comments "as everyone knows its free !" and it was unpublished , good for you Peck for getting 65 positives in 4hrs … just goes to show ozbargain gets new people all the time and someone will always find something worthwhile

    • Thanks, I was expecting to get negged badly, that's why I put in the disclaimer that I thought that most would already have membership. I thought that all Woolies customers would have already gotten it free through Woolworths Rewards.

    • Yea I recall most "complimentary Qantas membership" deals not getting very positive feedback either, so I'm surprised by this too.

It's not "everyone knows it's free" (because it isn't, usually). It's just that there are usually many different ways to get it for free, even when Qantas don't offer membership for free themselves. I even recall there being a page (on Point Hacks?) that summarised all the different ways you could get free QFF membership for free.. and there were about 20 different ways.

    • Success has a lot to do with timing and luck. Especially true on the internet.

    • I remember your post and the flack you got for it. What the hell right??

  • It has been free for at least
    about a month…

    • its been free for the past 7-8 years that I know of so probably even longer..

  • So I use my ANZ rewards black cards for everything - these are earning me heaps of points already - is there a benefit to getting this too?

    • +4

      Once you go black…

  • …this is not a deal. Regularly free and every other airline rewards program is free

  • i once met someone that paid for QFF membership

couldn't stop laughing for 3 days.

  • Just find Qantas has removed the 4 times family transfers per year.
It is unlimited numbers of transfer now with 600k points capping per year.
Probably good news for buyers and sellers!

      • I have comments there. If you select buyers or sellers correctly, you never have issues.
For sellers, never eager to sell, never being cheap to sell.
For buyers, never buy cheap, never buy too many at one time.

  • This deal keeps getting posted every few months here. I'm surprised it fetches so many votes each time… do we have more and more ozbargainers come on board each day? The free QF membership is 101 of ozbargain (i would have thought).

    • +2

Back in the good old days, it came with your OzB membership pack.

      • it came with your OzB membership pack

So annoyed i missed out on the OZB $20 gift card for joining…missed by 1 day.

  • It's an once off joining fee (normally) right? Joining won't subject me to annual membership fees? And if i dont fly qantas normally is there normally programs or affiliate programs that make accumulating and redeeming qantas FF points (for non-flying purposes) worth signing up?

    • Correct, 'once off' fee / 'fee free' :) to join. Sign up now, and then do the research.
The best way that I know of to accumulate FF points is through credit cards - especially the bulk FF points for signing up, but also the ongoing points for usage accumulate quicker than you would think.
Check out https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/qantas-points-partners/ear…. And for redemption check out https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/program/welcome (Hotels, Qantas store etc).
Qantas points expiry is very good too! "Your Qantas Points won't expire provided you earn or use Qantas Points through your account at least once every 18 months. This includes earning or using Qantas Points."

      • So i guess the next main question is are the redemtpion items well worth it? If other members have historically found it to be the case then certainly worth adding another 'free' membership to the drawer :)

  • From memory, it's almost always been free, or at most times

  • Just joined for free, still works. Cheers!

  • Yeah I just joined up my wife and I for free, still works with a current expiry date of 31/12/2017. Seems to just roll over each year? I might sign the kids up later.

I'd +1 this deal but can't as its over 180 days old.

    Awesome, thanks!
