  • Just confirming this, I just bought the set and the Impact driver has a really strong burning smell, I gather this isn't common? I tried drilling into some hard wood and the Drill could only get the screw about half way in before the torque seemed to max out. In any case the burning smell is constant and happens whenever the drill is in motion (regardless of whether the drill is is actually drilling or not). Time to send it back? Not sure if I should bother with Dewalt Customer Care or go to masters :/

    • +1

Everyone's definition of strong is different but it shouldn't be smelling like a bushfire for sure. You started talking about the impact driver then started taking about the drill, which one has that burning smell? both?

Edit: it is a brushed motor so some slight burning smell may be acceptable?

      • Oops: I meant to refer to the Impact Driver (the entire time), the Drill is fine and works well. The impact Driver on the other hand has a very strong smell, as in its unpleasant to be near when spinning. Given the lack of torque I also thought it might be a related issue.

        • Try going back to masters and swap it for another one. Explain to them the issue and if it still has the strong smell, return it for a refund if it's unbearable.

        • I would use it for a bit, the smell should go away shortly after your first decent project

    • How bad is the smell? Only the first time using it? My beasty blender did that the first 2 or 3 uses and went away, it's been solid since and it's VERY powerful.

    • Tried mine tonight. It had a smell for the first few screws. Perfectly acceptable. I was attaching decking to a steel frame.

Had a mates 18v Milwaukee as a comparison. Obviously it was better but considering his set was over 1k I am very happy with it.

  • Got me one with a pick up from Northlands. I'll let you know the quality.

  • Black & Decker crap :P

  • Got lucky here and clicked and collected yesterday, used the new subscription to email signup too to get another 5% off :-)

  • Tried it out yesterday and very happy. Seems to have more power than the cheap 18V unit it is replacing, and is half the size. Seems Voltage is not the only indicator of performance

  • Very happy with them. I was worried the driver wasnt going to be strong enough but it puts 30mm screws into pine in a fraction of a second. I expected it to be better than the generic i had but it exceeded my expectations by far.

Now to see if they drop the price on the 14.4v reciprocating saw.

  • any ideas which is the better deal - this unit or the stanley driver /drill for the same price?

    • ON the back of one of the included manuals I believe it mentioned stanley and dewalt. They may both be made by the same company these days. I think they are probably very close in quality

      • also Black & Decker is mentioned.
I used mine yesterday, great drill for the home DIY although I found the highest torque limit setting wasn't particularly high (compared to my previous drills), anyone else found the same? I know I can change the torque setting to "drill" so there is no clicking, however I was doing up bolts and thought they could be a bit tighter.
