Absolute bargain. Premium sound quality and superb durability. I reckon even at full price, this is a gem.. We all know dick never list their products as overpriced.. This one is great example.

Surely you can get more attractive paper-weights for less than $10.

  • Guess all the good stuff's gone huh? :)

  • Most stores I visited last week had little more than generic phone cases and sub charging cables left. Laughed when I saw them trying to flog a filthy 2nd hand staff kitchen jug ($25) and microwave ($66). They were also selling grubby power boards which were all scuffed and dirty for $4 (prob from displays) along with a lazer printer that they used in the office for $200. Is this so they can claim a further tax write off for selling old assets below some beancounter's valuation?

I remember when you could buy a tape that had a line in cable for your portable CD player so you could put one of these on the dash of your car and listen to grunge music.

    • These are still quite popular (compared to portable cd players) and often the best way to get decent sound in your old/rental car via your smartphone.

  • I saw a bloke try and describe the discman to his daughter and she wasn't impressed last time I was in Dse.

The funny thing is my daughter will never know a cassette, CD, DVD, vhs tape….. She crammed a sandwich in the opening though.

    • DVDs are not dead yet. It's reasonable to describe a CD as DVD but with only sound.

They're not dead. But the family is gathering around the bed, and they've called for a priest.

        • Can't walk into any major Australian shopping center without finding multiple retailers selling DVDs. Latest releases too. You're dreamin'.

  • OP you missed out the word "portable" in the title.

  • I visited the Bourke street store yesterday and they had an iPhone 3GS ex-repair looking new in the box. $299 bargain…

    • A 3GS Support Status is Vintage.

    • Sold my 16gb 3g in good condition when the 4s was released.

I did get the 3g on contract when it was released…. So was a few years old.

    • Some stupid rube will probably buy it. Just like those rug shops that say closing down sale! Everything massively reduced!

Man, I remember buying my first Sony Walkman and Discman. They were like couple of hundred dollars IIRC. Good times.

  • Wax cylinders on the phonograph was good enough for my old man. You certainly won't catch me buying one of these newfangled crystals sets. The kaiser probably uses them to spy on people. Now bugger off you kids. Grandma's very tired.

  • Saw these in Emporium and scoffed loudly. Also saw transistor radios for $30 and double scoffed.

  • Was tempted at this deal due to nostalgia but then I remembered what is was like to run one of these things. "Portable" my butt. Back 30 years ago rechargable batteries were nothing like they are now. The rechargeable batteries at the time were 1.2V Nickel Cadmium AA rechargeables which had less than a quarter of the ability of todays developed NiMh Enloops.

You could manage to play maybe 2 music CD's before the batteries were dead. That's 2 hours maximum of portable entertainment and then you'd have to run it off the AC adapter.

The music would jump and skip whenever you took it out jogging or exercising. Sony and other manufacturers invented shock resistance/shock proof/shock dampening which could be turned on when exercising but that too ate into your battery life.

Many teenagers would eventually drop these accidentally. The flimsy hinges on the doors would snap off. The doors would not stay closed if the spring clips and catches failed. The CD player's safety mechanisms would prevent the CD from operating if it detected the door wasn't closed.

Most of these were built cheap. And I mean REAL CHEAP. The motors/servos got slower over time until the laser couldn't read the CD properly.

    Mmmmmmm nostalgia…

  • I recently went into a Dick Smith's and it was like a funeral, people picking over the scraps. I bought a VGA cable, RCA DS branded cable and another printer cable for about $8. I asked if they had any HDMI cables the guy said all sold out we sold our last one a few days ago for $23, WTF? The business is having a closing down sale and selling $23 HDMI cables? They had about 8-10 old dvd's/BR's of no name movies sitting in a box I took a look and walked off when I saw a couple were selling for $17 each.

I rarely ever went into a Dick Smith's store but I'm starting to realise why they've gone under.

  • why am i tempted to buy this? I don't have anything that it'll play :P

  • You need to see the bigger picture of this product…

Part out a torch and take the laser out of this.
You should be able to keep most the electrons connected so its not much work. laser should be separate from the moving mechanism. You would have to add a switch or a bridging cable so the laser powers up.

It wont be the brightest but it will work with a few easy mods!
