Absolute bargain. Premium sound quality and superb durability. I reckon even at full price, this is a gem.. We all know dick never list their products as overpriced.. This one is great example.

        You mean for vinyl?

        That'd be a gramophone.

        • Thought that's what get stuck on Dick's cars. :)

On a serious note, a few stores have dozens of those Bush antique style record players, down to 60 from 90. you would think a store closing in a matter of hours would be flogging these for less

        • @Jackson: Perhaps they have have a plan to auction off what's left, or a deal to return them for credit to the supplier.

        • @Jackson: those are the ones with 70s atari style wood grain finish. So sexy. I imagine they'll be trying to shove them in the lifeline bins in a few hours time.

        • @Gimli: Yeah, I ended up getting them local, then took them to a Tailor to get taken up for now. Decided I'd focus on the fitness first, then once I'm down to a reasonable size - fly over and get some lovely suits made :)

2016 and a portable cd player that was $49.95 - and why are DSE closing?

    • +1

A quick search on the typical competitors suggests that $50 is actually a reasonable asking price for a portable cd player.

      • +1

reasonable?! as in "I have your child. Give me $20,000 and a portable CD player (worth $50) and I'll return your child to you"

These sold incredibly well with the older generation when I was working their, and after Sony finally discontinued their last discman model.. However, they did have a high rate of return.

You got 12 months warranty (if they honour their promise)

The Receivers will ensure that a customer hotline will remain in place post the closure of the
stores, for a period of 12 months.
The customer hotline will assist customers with:
 general enquiries following the closure of the store network,
 the claim process for faulty products bought on or after 5 January 2016

      • +2

Yeah and I'm a billionaire if I can trust that nice man from Nigeria.

    • +1

Yeah, the 'no warrany' thing is a biggy… many OzBers relish the opportunity to return the item if it fails within a year…

The little hand-written sign they had on the large TVs they were flogging off in my local DS a couple of weeks ago in-store that declared that there would be 'no manufacturer's warranty' were amusing/curious… I had to admire their honesty on that front, but the price did not match the lack of a warranty. They were knocking off 30%. There's no way I would spend 2k+ on a big TV that essentially would have NO WARRANTY.

      Interesting times…

This photo was taken on 20/3/2016. Can OP even confirm stock exists?

    • +1

Yes, I ducked in today (27/4) for a quick scan on what's value for money left and saw there are still some of these players hanging on shelves.

      • Anything else good? I'm surprised to see the odd iPad and iPhone pop up at some stores now when they previously had said they had no Apple products remaining. Prices on their Apple products are not great anyway.

        • Yup, they have couple of iPads and 3 MacBooks at robina, QLD store. Max discount 20%.. Honestly I would not even touch them.. They are old stock and model. You can get the same stuff cheaper on eBay or even some other online retailers.

      • +2

Surprised they still have shelves to hang stock from.

  • +1

As a bit of a side note, I'm wondering how the dude that started the company back in the 1980s (or was it the 1970s?) feels about all this… (the aviator/etc.; Dick Smith) … I think he is probably relieved, because finally his actual name will no longer be associated with a 'trading/solvent' company that is still operating, but which he has no control over. At least 'history will record' that under his leadership, things travelled along nicely…

    • +1

Dick Smith will continue to trade but as an online business…..

    • Dick smith the champion of buy Australia, yet when he owned this company it sold cheap imported electronic goods in competition to Australian made products and when i worked in supermarkets a lot of the products that were cut out to make way for his products were the Australian made and owned ones i also noticed that when his didn't sell more than a few were then replaced with other imported or foreign owned products not the Aussie ones he'd replaced

      • The first time I read the logo, I felt like swearing. I don't know why there is a Head in the middle. Since then I thought I kept reading it wrong until he sold it to Wollie and realized that I was right since day one.

  • +2

Be as sarcastic as you want, but this item would sell out incredibly fast. The older generation love them.
