Single Malt Scotch Whisky [Less than Dan Murphy’s] ($9 Delivery or Free Order > $300) @ Gooddrop

1900

I love Scotch. Scotchy Scotch Scotch.

Gooddrop (online retailer) have some whiskys available at prices much lower than anywhere else I can find. Online orders only, $9 delivery fee or free for orders over $300.

Decent aged single malts are quite expensive in Australia, but some specific bottles here are significantly cheaper than Dan Murphy’s prices, which I hold as the general benchmark for the cheapest easily available prices on alcohol. Where the bottles are not available at DM’s, I’ve provided the price for the bottle available at Nick’s.

Update 2PM 29/04/16: It appears some of the whiskys are being ozbargained…
2nd update 12PM 30/04/16 to strikethrough a couple more that seem to be sold out
3rd update 9PM 04/05/16 thanks to ivlutt noticing that Laphroaig Quarter Cask and Glenfarclas 12 year old back in stock

The 3 best deals in my opinion are:
Laphroaig 18YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $127.99 $179.99 at DM’s / $150.00 at Nick’s - $52 cheaper than DM’s and this is one the best Laphroaig I have tried.
Highland Park 18YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $146.99 $179.99 at DM’s – This is what I was looking for when I came across these prices. This is my favourite whisky.
Glenfarclas 15YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $94.99 $149.99 at DM’s - $55 off DM’s price is great.

Other good savings (not exhaustive):

Caol Ila 12YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $80.99 $98.99 at DM’s
Glenfarclas 12YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $72.99$104.99 at DM’s

Glenkinchie 12YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $68.99 $85.99 at DM’s
Glenfiddich 18YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $128.99 $144.99 at DM’s

Isle of Jura Prophecy Scotch Whisky $102.99$135.00 at Nick’s
Knockando 12YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $64.99$89.99 at Nick’s
Laphroaig Quarter Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky $74.99$119.99 at DM's / $89.99 at Nick's
Royal Lochnager 12YO Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky $64.99$89.99 at Nick’s
Talisker 10YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $74.99$86.99 at DM’s
Talisker 57° North Scotch Whisky $117.99$132.99 at DM’s
Talisker 25YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $375.99 $550.00 at DM’s / $499.00 at Nick’s

I hope you find yourself enjoying a dram soon!

For your sake JV, I bought a bottle of the Caol Ila and the Laphroaig 18Y. Lol

For your sake JV, I bought a bottle of the Caol Ila and the Laphroaig 18Y. Lol

Does JV like Japanese Sake? I don't think mixing Caol Ila and the Laphroaig with Sake would be nice.

No, he just likes to DRAMa of this whiskey thread.

He keeps rePEATing the same silly behaviours. You'd think he'd learn.

          Isn't it whisky ?

        • @jv:

Depends. Whisky is generally european. Whiskey generally american.

You don't have to read them…

But we all know you secretly love them…

    • +1

Nice find! Some really good prices compared to dm.

      +1 for effort ;)

      • +1

aaaaaaaand, DM has reduced their prices to be 5cents cheaper than Gooddrop's

        • +5

Apparently someone at DM pricing monitors and beat the prices around. Prolly frequent OzB too which is a good source of info. Thats how it beats small retailers to death

        • Really? I don't see it when i click the DM links.

        • @biggweilo:

Same here, e.g. Glenfarclas 15yo is still $149

        • @zzyss: my comment was an attempted "humorous" observation of previous deals where other retailers had listed a great price and then DM would price beat by 5cents, so that they could continue to claim they are the cheapest.

Then the minute the Other Retailer returns the price to it's "regular" price then DM ups their price to 5cents below that.

        • +2

          @altomic:

In my experience, DM's often proactive price beat big players but rarely beat small players.

There is a local bottle-o that often has specials cheaper than DM. they only advertise in the local papers. When I walk into DM's i see every article from Newscorp or SMH on a corkboard beaten but never the ones from the local paper.

I have on occasions showed the local paper article and claimed a 5c price beat, but always reactive not proactive.

        • @biggweilo: Unfortunately that local newspaper is almost certainly owned by Newscorp too.(Sydney….https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NewsLocal)

        • +2

@biggweilo: For the sake of saving 5 cents, why would you not just go to the local bottleshop that has the deal and actually support the community? Small businesses need the support of the locals and when they do specials cheaper than DM's you still choose not to go to them? I could understand if DMs was near by and the bottleshop was far away, but you did say it is your LOCAL bottleshop.

        • +1

          @Crowdedthehouse:

When I said local i was referring to my local area and advertised in my local paper. I try to support the bottle shop, however, I can walk to DM's and need to drive to the bottle shop a couple of suburbs away. I'm not going to DM's to save 5c, it is just more convenient sometimes.

        • I find the DM price beating bashing hilarious. Many places match or beat prices, Bunnings, Officeworks, The Good Guys etc. People love saying they went to Officeworks and had them price match something and they get + votes. When Dan actively tries to provide the lowest prices around they get crucified.

Go to where its convenient for you, if its Dans then go, if its local then go. Its great to know that there are multiple places to get a bargain to save some money. I bet these 'support local' people often walk out of the local place and into one with a cheaper price, if you don't then you prob don't need OzBargain….

  • +1

    fantastic prices

  • Laphroig quarter cask great price too

    • Very good point. Updated, thanks!

    • it's also 90 aud for 1 litre at duty free, so a good price.

  • Thanks mate. Picked a couple up.

  • +1

Also worth noting that their Alize range is much cheaper than anywhere else I have seen.

    • Yes mate, From memory this is cheaper than Duty free shop,Havn't checked lately.
Also most of the range is available, thanks

  • +3

    Good prices.
Shame they have no japanese whisky in stock.

    • Nobody does, really! If you find pretty much any Japanese whisky with an age statement, buy it on sight. They are getting rare.

      • Yep, there is a crazy mad world wide shortage.

The Juras are good especially the less peaty drops.

      • +1

It all started from their rave reviews by Jim Murray, the self-styled whisky 'connoisseur'. The craze for aged Japanese whisky is irrational but then it's caused prices for aged Scottish single malts to drop across the board which is great.

        • I actually came back from a Japan trip recently. Whisky is very well priced there (local or imported) but aged Japanese whisky is nowhere to be found.

I did pick up a bottle of Nikka Yoichi single malt non-aged duty free on the way out and it's bloody good!

        • @Poimandres:

I was in Japan a few weeks ago for the hanami. They have some crazy prices for Scotch, like Talisker 10yo for 3350yen, Glenmorangie 12yo for 3780yen and Bowmore 12yo for 3680yen. All $40-$45.

      • is age statement a technical term? i was just about to buy a jap whisky from dans that i need on sunday for a gift but dan only delivers. no stock in store.
bought one in stock around christmas and me and my mate were surprised. it was our first jap whisky. edit: i think the site has been ozbargained.

        • It should be listed on the bottle. 12 year, 15 year, 18 year etc. Whisky tends to get nicer (and more expensive!) the longer you age it. But, because there are serious stock shortages most of the Japanese whisky manufacturers have stopped producing aged bottles and put whisky's on the market without age statements.

Some people are pretty snobbish about this stuff, but you can get some damn fine whisky with no age statement.

        • @Poimandres: My problem is I tend to like the less subtle stuff - akashi white oak, ichiro's malt etc.. but it's tough to get around here. Nick's is the only place I know of where this stuff is stocked.

        • +1

          @simulacrum:
Damn, it's almost worthwhile getting cheap return flights to Japan just to go shopping!

        • @Poimandres:

at $350 return on Jetstar, and with reasonable air-bnb accomodation in the off season its almost a no-brainer. I'm pissed i didn't snap up flights a couple of weeks ago.. he who hesitates is lost!

        • +1

@simulacrum: That is exactly what I did. $350 return in cherry blossom season was bonkers. Great experience with Air Bnb, fantastic food etc. My only regret was not sneaking back a few more bottles in my luggage!

        • @Poimandres: Yeah it's impossible to have a bad meal in that country, at pretty much any budget… That settles it.. next sale i'm going!

        • @simulacrum:

Casa De Vinos (Port Melbourne) has a great selection of Japanese whiskies. Go see Jose and he will sort you out.

        • @futurenow: cheers for the tip!

Recently acquired a bottle of Hibiki 17 for $350 AUD!!

        Liquid Gold

        • +1

If you live in Perth, check out DM Bicton, they occasionally have the Hibiki 17 for $200…their range of aged-statement Japanese whiskies is also pretty impressive..

        • @Quiexo: Isnt Hibiki sold out almost everywhere?

        • +1

          @datzed:

It is, but for some reason DM Bicton occasionally has it in stock…only place I've seen it in stock (in Perth anyways) TBH..

        • +1

And I thought paying about 150 for a bottle in Tokyo 6 months ago was expensive!

      • It will only get harder.

Nikka, for example, has now ceased production of the individual 10, 12, 15yo etc single malts and release them simply as Single Malt without age distinction. The choices are basically limited to choosing from their Yoichi or Miyagikyo distillery.

    no alcoholic post ple….bahahhahaha

    • That's unAustralian.

      • +1

running joke mate. big post on ozbargain last couple of weeks about someone wanting to ban alcoholic deals.

How much for a liver transplant?

  • +1

Here it goes down, down into my belly, mmm mmm mmm.

  • +5

This is probably cheaper then any Oz duty free.
I agree Op, Highland Park is an awesome drop.

    • +3

Australian duty free prices are mostly trash on booze. Most of the whisky's are actually more expensive than buying at Dan's, which is frankly absurd. The exception I've found is Hendrick's gin at $60 for 1 litre. That's a good deal.

  • Simply Gr8!!!

  • -2

Jeez some of those 15yr olds are expensive. Recently got a Dimple 15yr old, amazing drop, for only $54.

    • +3

This is the single malt thread, not the blend thread.
But fear not, here's a comforting read

    • Amazing…not but is really easy to drink

nice to drink while watching Game of Thrones

  • +1

Lots of great stuff outside the whisky's too, just placed a $300 order that would've been $440 at Dans.

  • Thanks :) I'd also note that the Patron Anejo is a great drink for scotch drinkers and at a wonderful price. If you haven't had a good sipping tequila you are missing out http://gooddrop.com.au/patron-anejo-mexican-aged-tequila-700…

  • COURVOISIER XO FRENCH COGNAC for $92.99.. this is really good saving there. Not the cheapest but still significant saving.. Great find!

  • pity they are out of stock for the guinness 24x440ml slabs - excellent price.

  • Need a good deal on American Honey.

  • Jesus, dude. Top effort! Unfortunately my drinks cabinet is overflowing.

    • "Unfortunately". Said no-one. Ever.

      • +1

Normally I would agree, but in this case, I just brought back 3 bottles of whisky from OS this week. There is no space… well, maybe I can put a couple more bottles under the bed ;)

        • +2

Sounds like you need to store a bit more scotch in your belly

  • +2

I have mixed feelings about this.
I am trying to save money right now.
    But I just spent $360.
    Saved myself $190 though.
    Because Laphroig.

    • +1

I actually feel quite guilty I did this.
Is this a normal OZBargainer emotion?
To feel significant regret, despite saving equally significant money (albeit on a product that isn't really a necessity).

      • +3

        Not a necessity…? I don't understand.

    • Don't matter how much you saved, that's an imaginary ledger.

The real life ledger reads -360.

      • +1

Not when it comes to scotch. Yay savings!

        • +1

Drink the scotch and the -360 will go away!

  • +1

Highland 18YO and Glenfarcas 15YO already out of stock. :(

    • Updated, thanks for letting me know. Sad news indeed.

  • OP are these regular prices or specials?

    • No idea, sorry. They don't appear to be advertised as a sale. Other commenters have reported certain lines now being sold out, so there might be limited stock, but I am just guessing.

  • +5

It never ceases to amaze me the power of Ozbargain.

100+ votes is easily translated to a few thousand clicks (in this case 2000)

Each one of those clicks represents someone who is very much interested in potentially buying some good whiskey for cheap.

The people behind the website would be like "ummm wtf just happened? We have sold out of x y and z out of nowhere…" and probably a good portion of the time not realise that its due to them being a deal on Oz.

    • +1

Sure but the other portion of the time they can just look at the referrer and see ozbargain.com.au

  • Picked up a Springbank 15yo, still ends up $16 cheaper than my "members price" at a specialist bottle shop. Great work OP

  • Any recommendations for a lighter whisky in the style of Dalwhinnie or Japanese whiskies? Not big on peat just yet..

    • The Talisker 10 would be quite light, easy to drink

    • +1

Probably highland park or Glenlivet. Much milder than islays like talisker or Laphroaig

      • Thanks guys! Will look into it..:)

  • Link is wrong for Glenfarclas 105 (so there's still some stock left!)

    http://gooddrop.com.au/glenfarclas-105-cask-strength-scotch-…

    • Fixed in the description, thanks for picking that up!

  • Lol read first sentence as "I love scotch. Crotchy crotch crotch."

So disappointed I missed out on the Glenfarclas 15YO, have a bottle of the 175th anniversary edition siting at home that I'm afraid to drink since it is now discontinued =/

  • My two bottle of laphroaig and highland park shipped today. $9 shipping to country Vic is a great deal.
    Thanks again op.

    • No worries, glad to hear it!

  • Stock of most items were barely moving from week to week until some bigmouth ;-0 here told the world…. now GoodDrop stock is disappearing at a rapid rate….. there will be several more items out of stock before the day is out!

    • +1

There's only so much whisky I can buy for my own needs; I thought I may as well tell the world so the whole world could enjoy, not just me.

      • What will soon be gone if not already is the Laphroaig QC, Jura 16, Jura Prophecy, JW Platinum 18, Cragganmore 12, Glenfiddich Solera Res. All Glenfarclas but 105 is already gone.

  • naaaawww, the Laphroaig Quarter Cask is sold out too :(

  • Gooddrop used to be on eBay and I'd bought from them a couple of times before. I was disappointed to find that there was no longer a gooddrop user on eBay when I checked a few weeks back, didn't even think to check if they had their own site now. Thanks for the heads up ! :)

    • ….. and the prices directly are 5-10% cheaper than eBay. For a short time when they first went up on eBay, they undercut their site prices but that did not last for long.
