1280

Is it just me or does this seem cheap? Yeah I know, crap phone. Blah blah. But for Brick's and mortar, cheap nonetheless?

Price seems about right for the specs

People complain when 16GB iphones are posted. This is only 8GB.

    • +5

Different user group different expectations I guess

  • +26

Leaves only 5.3GB free space. Still, great for "senior" relatives/family members who won't be interested in many apps, nor storing music.

    • Agree. Android and Windows Mobile can be a nightmare to use compared to iOS for the technically challenged.

      • +2

It depends on how much spare time you had to play with phone. iOS is simple to use and safe. I have been using touch devices since palm, HTC Windows, HTC touch. I tried Windows and android recently but none of them meet my expectations. Wasted too much time to organizr a simple task. Silent mode, calendar sync, mails integration, etc.

        • +1

When gifting to older relative that time translates to time over the phone "assisting" or showing "how to" at family gatherings.

With iPhone it's just intuitive, fool proof or worst case they ask their friends - who all use what has become a standard and mostly consistent platform. iPhone 3GS icon interface basically the same as iPhone 6S

        • +1

          @tommyc:

+1, but even I spend quite some hours showing my parents how to work on some tasks on their iphone 4/5S…

      • +11

Windows Phone can also be much easier to use if you set it up to be simple. I got a $40 Lumia 532 for my Mum to replace her old and broken iPhone 3GS, and just made a massive tile for phone, a massive tile for sms, and then medium tiles for each of her contacts that she calls regularly. It literally couldn't be any easier - press a persons photo to call them, press a button to answer calls, press a button to see call list, press a button to open messages.

        • +1

I agree. My dad only has 4 tiles

Phone. Son. Aunty (his sister overseas). Recharge

          @CVonC:

My dad is almost 80 now and really only uses it for cheap overseas calls, or to occasionally call me (interstate). He is one of those elderly that switches off his phone after he is finished (saving electricity - go figure)

If I wanted to contact my dad, I call the landline

        • Totally agree.

Gave my parents my unlocked Lumia 532 with 3 Live Tiles on screen only - Phone, Messages, HERE Drive+.

For the above price, just get 2 Lumia 640's (keep one as a spare).

      • +1

my mums samsung galaxy S4 has a basic mode option

it has 9 extra extra large buttons no extra workspaces
Favourite contacts call, phone, sms, chrome + 3 custom buttons/apps

and from memory it even doesnt show all apps (9 dots icon) and you cant edit the workspace by holding the screen so no accidental messing up icons. must go to the setting menu first

    • +2

4 inch screen might be a bit hard to see for some seniors. Windows phones are easier too for seniors, nice big tile UI helps.

    • Depends what you need I guess. I'm still using a Nexus 4 8GB as my second phone and it's fine to chuck the kids to watch youtube videos or play some basic games. Requires significant optimisation though, given you really need a minimum 500MB free at all times or you can't update apps or do anything meaningful.

    • +1

I picked up the 16Gb 5c for my mother, 68 years old and she' still managed to fill it, you'd be surprised what an old person can do with a phone these days. This doesn't seem like a bad price but it would be worth considering spending a few dollars more for less pain down the track

      • +2

Pics and vids of the grand children and no idea how to get it off the phone which is why they fill it up. Itunes is not easy enough to use for old farts. Got the oldies an android as they understand the simple concept of drag and drop.

        • +2

Also having a back button is nice.

    • Seniors in my family take a lot of photos lol

    • +62

I'm posting this from an 8gb phone as we speak.

I'll be sure to get back to you though when target is selling an iPhone 6s with 64gb for $279.

        tips hat

        You sir Pazuri, are awesome.

        • +7

Thanks mate, hopefully someone gets something out of it.

      • +3

Not sure why people are being so negative towards you paizuri, I think Apple products are overpriced and too locked down like everyone else
but this price and simplicity of the product makes this a great option for some people

        • think of it as design perspective, like car brand. Some will pay higher cos they like the look.
          That goes with everything.
I too, can't afford an iphone, but if it sells same price with majority phone makers out there, I will definitely buy it over other brands.

        • -2

          @mcp2kpro:

Those people will be selling their limbs to pay for an iCar in 2020

        • +2

It's a good price for an iPhone.

I wouldn't use one, but other people might for whatever reason want or need one.

It's a good compact 4" phone with pretty decent band support and software updates for a long while.

We wouldn't tell someone with a PSP to buy a MicroSD card instead of a Memorystick because it's "basically the same thing".

        • @abc: In 2020, you will be selling your limbs to buy anything really.

        • I bought a moto x pulse because I couldn't afford an iPhone 6 plus ……not because. I like Android .

    • +1

Something like this would be great for the "oldies" who arent downloading apps but still want a IOS smart phone

      • +1

For the "oldies" have to one because all their oldie friends have one too.

    • +3

Just stick a microSD card in it… oh wait…

  • -1

great for a work phone or a childs, other than that.

    • +1

If you didn't have a preference for Apple though, you could get similarly featured Android phones for $100.

      • +14

        No, not even close.

Camera on the iPhone is miles better than anything else around the price range. Touch screen behaves well, screen is nicely calibrated, software behaves as expected, etc. etc. Build is miles better on the iPhone than on the $100 cheapies.

I love cheap Chinese Android phones, but to say they're similarly specced/built/used is pretty crazy.

That being said, the day when the Android $100 cheapies will eclipse the 5c is almost here. I think you could get a comparatively better Android phone for the $280 (Xiaomi Red!) but the Apple camera and build are hard to argue with.

        • +7

For the target market, the $69 Lumia 640 posted here the other day beats the iPhone in every respect. Yes, there are app issues, but the demographic that would buy a iPhone 5c would likely not be an app junky.

        • @ghoulie1:
Though the same and tested the Nokia 640 with Windows Mobile with an older relative as a gift. The camera is quite good and so is the screen but using the actual device is hideous compared to iPhone. The fact there is no physical home button is the first challenge. Similarly lack of a separate physical silent mode switch.

        • +5

          @tommyc:

What is the difference between a physical home button and an always on screen home button? It is functionally the same.

        • +1

@MrFunSocks: some people may find the tactile feedback comforting. Personally I don't need that but I miss a physical home button to turn the phone on from the front, like when it's in a holder in the car.

        • +1

@MrFunSocks: It is the same only when the phone is in operational, when it hang it's a big different.

        • +1

A6 seems to offer similar performance as a s410. Not very fast SoC by todays standards. That's what you get in many of these $50 Android phone deals. I'd hate to see how this phone will run iOS 10. The $69 Lumia 640 probably beats this phone in just about every respect hardware wise. And who needs a flimsy physical button that is known to cause issues when you have double tap to wake? If you must have an iPhone I suggest getting at least the 5s, it offers double the storage, fingerprint scanner, a vastly faster soc and better build. :)

        • +2

@ghoulie1: 2 years ago I bought my mother in law a THL W8. Android phone. She struggled with using it but eventually kinda got it. Then the phone carked it and I had to buy her a Lumia 640.

I was really wowed by the Lumia 640 but the mother in law struggled. Once again, the user interface was intuitive enough for young ones like us, but very complex and unintuitive for her. And each time she asks me a question (and she has short term memory as well), I have to explain how there's three steps to do such and such…. but at the back of my mind I'm thinking "If we had spent more on an iPhone, she wouldn't be asking these questions".

At the end of the day, we get what we pay for. Specs isn't everything. User interface makes a big difference to whether the oldies adopt the phone, and I sincerely think that iOS is better thought out than the rivals. It's just a shame that it costs so much to get a decent entry point. I'm too scared of buying those 'refurbished' ones on eBay.

        • +2

@thevofa: That's why Samsung Galaxy with 1+2 'physical' buttons is most comfortable. Return button is the most used one, that's missing in the stubborn Apple.

      • +1

Not that's still getting software updates.

      • $39
(Obviously build quality, screen and cam res are not as good, pretty much everything else about the same, maybe better. But there's some 'small change' left after the transaction!)

        • 1GB RAM in an android phone? No thanks. My Z5C has 2GB and it can get pretty laggy at times.

        • +1

@MrFunSocks: Sure 1GB is not great. A power user will not be buying an 8GB phone either. Anyway, that's just one (extreme) example.

        • +1

@McFly: While I see your point, the rest of the hardware in an iphone 5C is generally going to be much higher quality than that of a $100 android phone.

        • I wonder how this stacks up against Android phones like the oppo f1 or ZTE Blade V Plus? This is it's competition at around $300 for local stock and warranty.

        • -2

          @Ronnnie: They're only a bit better… until you turn them on. :p

        • @Ronnnie: we bought my gf a ZTE Blade S6 after she lost her Samsung last year, its been going well, nice enough screen/camera, zippy enough and throwing in a MicroSD solved the storage issue. For approx $270 (at the time, I think they are below $250 now) I would say that it is a better phone than this….but if you are a slave to Apple (or just prefer iOS) then it is a moot point.

DISCLAIMER - I am NOT an Apple person, they are a strange breed that will justify their choice by denigerating the competition, but as long as they don't get into my face preaching I can deal with them

      • well, i do hence the name. lol

  • +9

8GB + no MicroSD = smartphone nobody really wants hence the clearance price.

But good enough for backup phone, albeit one that's kind of expensive.

  • With 5.3 GB free space, it will be more a feature phone with internet access and few apps.

  • +18

This is what iPhone 6 should be priced at.

  • +8

Not bad if you are looking for an iPhone for a kid.
With Cloud storage available for pics and vids, and music apps like Spotify, my 2 sons don't get anywhere near filling up the 16GB on their phones. An 8GB phone would not handicap them.
Different strokes for different folks, but I would not dismiss this if I was looking for a 'starter' phone.

    • i'm sure they might not get anywhere near 16 gig (11 usable) but even at 50% of that it's more than the usable amount in this phone, would love to agree with you on the storage front but app's also count towards the storage which leaves it very limited. In saying that for an Apple product it is def an ok entry price.

  • Garden City in Perth, WA? or Garden City in Brisbane, QLD? or nationwide?

    • +3

No Target at Garden City in Perth.

    • +1

Can confirm its was available at Marion SA yesterday so must be nationwide

  • +7

I saw 4 whites and 1 blue @ Carlingford yesterday

They also have 1 3GS for $174.30 lol

  • it's pre-paid; is it networked locked?

    • It's telstra, prepaid, but unlocked.

  • Don't bother. It will not receive any more updates. The iPhone 5 receive iOS 9 update but not all the features like flux or adblock.

  • +7

awww i read this as iphone 5cents. i wish

    • hahahahaha awesome

    • +20

Even if it were 5c i bet someone would still piss and whinge about it.

      • "someone" can go jump for all i care and im an android user… lol more for the rest of us!

  • +3

5C is a great phone, bluetick on Telstra, gets great reception and call quality is excellent better than 6S plus i had. I used one for a month while waiting for my SE. You can get new 16gb for similar price off eBay though, i got mine for $200 on GT and sold for $290.
    I get by with 16gb but couldn't with 8gb.

    • Pardon my ignorance but what is GT?

      • Gumtree

        • +1

          Ta mate

  • +4

It's not a crap phone but the 8GB makes it a very restrictive one. I don't think this would be a smart buy unless they're still on iOS7, then they would be quite snappy and responsive and handy for extremely light users who prefer the simplicity of iOS (but I would strongly recommend never to upgrade the OS past 7.1.2). Down from $399? Sure, they were $399 at one stage but Apple doesn't sell them anymore. They were $399 15 months ago at Telstra/JB for the 32GB model (in certain colours only), that was a decent deal IMO. Now, you're better off spending $399 (so an extra $120) for a 16GB 5S with double the memory, a much faster processor, touch ID and better cameras (and possibly iOS 10 support).

    • I second that. I had to restore my 5c not that long ago (tried to get around it, but gave up after spending few hours) and it forced the update to iOS 9. Feel laggy now. Not to the point of unusable, but still annoying even for light user after the update. On the positive side, iOS 9 allowed me to install all the loyalty apps like Red Rooster, Oporto, etc (which like many apps these days, required minimum of iOS 8).

  • +1

Look 8GB is rough but with a lot of stuff moving to the cloud and the many music/video streaming apps 8GB is perfectly manageable

  • What would have the better camera? The latest gen iPod Touch or the iPhone 5C?

All I really want this for is iOS apps and testing of my websites as well as Instagram photos.

    • I believe they're both 8MP rear cameras with the same 1.2MP front. The iPod has an A8 chip though vs A6 on the 5c and is 64bit.

  • -1

As an Apple fan I would stay away from this garbage.

They named it C for a reason, "Crap".

    • +2

Geez, what about S ? is it "Sucks".

  • +5

What really sets this model apart from the others is that you can go to the FBI for assistance if you need help unlocking it. Apple themselves can't offer this level of service.

    • and don't forget they'll send you a million dollar invoice to unlock it. Cost more if it is a SE/6s/6splus model. Therefore, yep! this phone is a bargain.

  • Isn't there a an accessory that triples as a case/cover, has an extended battery, and sports a usb OTG port for removable sdcard storage?

Gee I thought there would be…lol

  • +4

the most curious thing, i find, about Apple bashing is that you never hear an Apple owner doing it.

    • +2

Why that's because we're sheep. Who need to be told how unhappy we should be feeling. In our walled garden of sorrow

I'm waiting for my Android white knight now. You know, to set me straight

      • stop right there, apple SCUM ! ! !
don't you know anyone who follows apple is a sheep and has no argument whatsoever ? ? ?
and that apple holds no merit and the reason it dominates pretty much any market it enters is because, well, REASONS? insert heavy breathing here

Le Android Army is Here !!!
        YOUR MOVE, CREEP

        • he he he.
yes. the reasons are mind boggling :)
i know why Apple will get my money but i dont care to share it with all the Android sheep (broken robots)
          ah ha
(writing this on my Retina Imac, my god its sexy, and you'll never know)

  • my jap action movie already 8gb in HD!

  • Cheaper than Kogan / Dick Smith for a refurb one @ $289

  • Thanks got 2

  • -1
    • +1

It's not a factory new one. I looked the description, it's a refurbished one.

  • With WWDC around the corner I would like to think this sudden price drop indicates a new C replacement perhaps?

  • +2

nice. im still using my iphone 5c from 2 years ago. I prefer plastic over the aluminium and glass outer cases.

I also prefer iphone over android because i like the interface and theres nothing an android does that i wish mine could do….except the coloured notification light on the nexus, that is cool.

    • +3

Thanks, I personally prefer android but frankly it is subjective preference, Ford vs Holden basically. They both do what their users need them to do. I am just glad some people got some use out of the deal.

  • +1

well after 13 hours it's good to see we have all agreed , this phone is good for some and not for others …..

next item on the agenda , world peace
